editorial Ich schreibe den City Guide auf der einen Seite aus der Sicht eines Rollerbladers, der die Architektur einer Stadt und den urba-nen Raum anders sieht als ein normaler Reisender. Rollerblader suchen nach an-deren Dingen. Sie suchen zwischen, unter oder neben der großen Architektur, sie suchen nach der kleinen Architektur, auf die sonst niemand achtet. Das Curb ne-ben dem Museum, das Handrail vor dem Wohnblock oder die Bank unter einer Brücke. Das ist die Architektur nach der wir suchen, die wir in jeder Stadt finden, wenn wir nur die Augen aufhalten.Auf der anderen Seite möchte ich euch hier auch ein paar kulturelle Tips mit auf den Weg geben. Ihr werdet in diesem City Guide nicht nur Skatespots finden, son-dern auch günstige Hostels, Bars, Museen sowie die besten Shops und Gallerien, die es in der jeweiligen Stadt zu finden gibt. Nicht um euch vom Skaten abzuhalten, sondern eher um die regenreichen Tage im Jahr zu überbrücken!

Ich mag Finnland und besonders Helsin-ki. Das kommt wohl daher, dass ich 2007 in Helsinki mein Auslandssemester ver-bracht habe. Helsinki hat einen besonde-ren Charme, entweder man mag ihn oder man mag ihn nicht. Ich mag ihn! Man könnte die Atmophäre vielleicht so beschreiben: Nasse Trockenheit, kalte Wärme, vertraute Fremde oder entfernte Nähe. Es ist der Kontrast der diese Stadt spannend und inspirierend werden läßt. Helsinki strahlt eine gewisse Ruhe und friedliche Stimmung aus, und in der Tat habe ich in Helsiki keine einzige schlechte Erfahrung mit Leuten gemacht, die et-was von mir wollten, das ich ihnen aber freiwillig nicht geben würde. Generell kann man sagen, dass die Finnen ein sehr vertrauenswürdiges Völkchen sind. Ich würde wetten, dass man ein Fahrrad un-abgeschlossen auf der Strasse stehen las-sen könnte, ohne dass es geklaut werden würde! Ausserdem lasse ich mich gerne von der leicht melancholischen Stimmung anstecken. Es ist auch kein Wunder, wenn man bedenkt, dass man das halbe Jahr mit Dunkelheit und Kälte zu kämpfen hat. Dafür ist der Sommer um so schöner, denn selbst nachts wird es nicht wirklich dunkel!

I wrote this city guide from the point of view of a rollerblader, because we see the architecture of a city and urban spaces different from normal tourists. Rollerblader look for other things. We always search for the little things in bet-ween or next to the obvious architecture. The curb close to the museum, the hand-rail in front of an apartment building or the bench under a bridge, that´s the kind of architecture we are looking for, the kind we will find in any city, as long as we keep our eyes open. On the other hand I also wanted to tell you something about the cultural aspects of the city. In this city guide you will find more than skatespots. You will also find information about che-ap hostels, bars and museums, as well as the best shops and galleries in town. This will help you survive the rainy days of the year!

I really love Finland and especially Hel-sinki. In 2007 I spent my exchange year there and liked its unique charme right away. People love it or leave it, there is not much in bewteen. I just love it! You might describe the atmosphere of Helsinki as wett and dry, cold and warm, close and far away, known and unknown, all at the same time.Helsinki lives of these exciting and ins-piring contrasts. It gives you peace and calmness. I haven´t had one bad expe-rience in Helsinki, not only because the Finns seem to be really trustful people.I bet that if you left your bike unlocked somewhere in the streets, noone would even touch it. Moreover I like the melancholy of the Scandinavians, which is inevitable when you consider that they have to fight dark-ness and cold weather half of the year. That makes the summer even more beautiful, when the sun doesn´t even set at all.

that is an important thing for me and many others. When I started my shop many skiers skateboarded in summer time and many bladers use to snow-board in winter time. Now a days it has changed with more young skiers blading in the summer time and even a few ska-ters are start to ski! Skating in summer time helps building skills to start winter time rails. And skiing is practice jum-ping and rotations. Which skate spot in helsinki is the best, where can visitors find other rollerbladers? We have lots of spots! Some are better than others and some are more popular than others. If you come to visit the easiest are Main Post (good ledges) it‘s just next to our main railway station. Then there‘s a nice skate park in near Olympia Stadi-um called Eläintarha. And then there is a totally new and big outdoor skatepark in Savela that‘s not totally ready yet but it‘s coming ready in next year. There‘s one and only one indoor park that‘s in Kontu-la ( It´s closed in summer times) If you like to some handrails, the easiest way is to contact locals to show you spots or just come visit my shop and I can mark in a map what you need. In winter time many snowboard and freeskiing groups film movies here. One year some snow-board magazine named Helsinki to be the best rail city of the world. Here you can skate, ski or board In privacy. Poli-ce are very friendly and sometimes they are even control traffic. Do you have any kind of skate brand here in Finland? No we don‘t have any brand! But a few years ago we had one clothing company called Replica. But lets see what happens in the future. What about pro skaters, or any kind of competitions? Actually we have few flow riders. Konsta Kortteinen ska-tes Razors, Lauri Harle skate Remz and Perttu Tiainen skate Nimh. Then there is more coming, but that is a secret for now. Lauri, Konsta and Samu Kukkonen skated in Winterclash and also some other comps in Estonia, Sweden and Poland. Then we make Real Street and Finish nationals competitions every year and of course many sessions. Now we have courses to new members, we have 10 pairs USD Realm to borrow there, so any one can try and learn to skate. How is the level of rollerblading in Helsinki? I believe there are very good skaters in here, but most skate for fun! I hope that in the future more Finnish skaters will take part in European competitions. And I´d like to see more foreign skaters to take part in our competitions! Let`s get a bit more serious: what has rollerblading taught you over the years of beeing part

hey how are you doing? Fine thanks! Little bit busy as usually ;D Waiting for the trip to Estonia, Tallinn Realstreet. And updating the webshop before that trip. Tell me something about you. How old are you? Where did you grow up and when did you start rollerblading? I‘m 28 years young, born and grew up in Helsin-ki. My training was as a chef, but these day I‘m running SWIFT2fOOT and wor-king in Helsinki, Vantaa airport a few days in a month. I started to ski when I was 12 years old and summer time was boring, so in 90‘s I found great summer activity, rollerblading! So If I calculate right I have skated almost 10 years, but mostly only in the summer time. At which point did you decide to start your own business with a skateshop in Helsinki? How was the si-tuation back then and how have things changed? In 2000 I got out off army and one of my study buddies just opened a little restaurant and asked me to run it with him, five years later we sold it. So then I had a little extra money and I was jobless. I woke up with an idea to start own business and then I think the easiest way to go about it was to do something that I already do. I start to plan how to get skiing and rollerblading together in same shop and to Finland. Starting was very difficult but in these few years I‘ve learned a lot. And what about the name „swift2foot“, how did you come up with this idea? I had one thing I liked to put into the shop name and that was the number 2, that‘s because it‘s all two, two genres, two seasons, and different to board shops -skis and skates need two things ;D Then we were planing different names with the number 20 and my mom suggested the name SWIFTFOOT. Time was short and we had to get to open the shop so we baptised the shop with the name SWIFT2FOOT. Ok then, please tell me something about the finnish roller-blading scene! The Finish rollerblading scene is small but strong and with lots of energy. There are older skaters and a lot of young and new ones. Many sty-les and scene is spread all over Finland, from south to north and east to west. The only thing lacking is girls skaters could be more! Is there any connection between rollerblading and freeskiing, do you think that both sports should be more connected? Yes, there is lot of con-nection.

that come to Helsinki? If you want see the biggest attraction you must go to museums and churches. But a very good place to visit is Suomenlinna, but make sure that there is good weather. Its big is-land near down town, there is history and a very nice place to chill! Biggest beach is next to my shop called Hietaniemi. Then there is lot a of cool parks to chill out and meet locals. Best and biggest shopping centres are in down town and then one very big one is in Itäkeskus (Nordic big-gest). In Punavuori there‘s cool small shops and coffee shops! You can find more culture in Kaapelitehdas and Su-vilahti. And of course SWIFT2FOOT, Il-marinkatu 10 ;D ! Where do you go for a beer or to party? Hahaa!! I know this

Hahaa!! I knew this question was coming! In Finland we have very tight alcohol po-litics! If you need beer or cider you can buy those in markets and gas stations at 9.00am. to 9.00 pm. and wines and spirit you get only In ALKO spirit stores. But don‘t worry, like every Finish villa-ge where there‘s more than 1000 peop-le, you will find ALKO! Is there anything else you whant to say? some shout outs? Public traffic is well and you can live safety. Though living in capital area is too expensive! What would you say is typical Finnish Ok, if you like to meet ty-pical Finns, you must take a car or train and go to some little village in middle of Finland ;D! People are totally difference in capital areas and big cities than the countryside. But we say that stereotypi-cal Finish have blond hair and blue eyes, girls are pretty and men are strong! ;D And little bit is... the worst thing is, we like drink a lot! The level of skating in Helsinki is a good balance between hardcore and chilled rollerblading. Jesse was having a really tough day with lots of stylish tricks but also lots of slams, here you see him with high speed 5 m fs torque to gap. The mamoor curbs at spot no. 6 are really smooth, fast and great to skate. The spot is also nicely based close to the harbour and close to the flea market.

To be honest...this is the best skate spot I ever saw in my life! It‘s really incredible!!! You will find lots of different rails, curbs, double rails, gaps, kink rails and wall ri-des... and the best is that it‘s all going slightly down hill so you can keep your speed. I bet you will find so many combi-nations of lines you can skate, that you are getting confused about your next trick... But there are two things you should pay attention to: 1. there are a view privat se-curitys, who could destroy your peacfull rollerblading! 2. the place is really buisy and many people passing by, so pay at-tention to them!

If someone will manage to skate a hole line from the very top till the end without loosing any tricks, and without any slams I would be really happy to see it on video tape!

Das ist der beste Skatespot den ich je in meinem Leben gesehen habe! Es ist un-glaublich!!! Ihr findet hier so viele Spots, das man gar nicht weiß wo man anfan-gen soll. Hier eine kleine Auflistung: un-zählige verschiedene Rails und Kingrails, Curbs in verschiedenen Höhen, Gaps von 5er Stufen bis doubblesets, sowie Wallri-des. Das alles ist ja ganz nett, aber das beste kommt noch! Das ganze Areal ist leicht abschüssig gebaut, so dass man im-mer mit einer guten Geschwindigkeit un-terwegs sein kann. Ich wette, ihr findet hier so viele Kombinationen an Lines, die man hier skaten kann, dass ihr sicherlich verafft welchen Spot ihr als nächstes fah-ren wolltet. Da gibt es allerdings zwei Sachen, auf die man aufpassen sollte: 1. Hier sind private Securities, die euch den Spaß vermasseln können!

2. Dieser Ort ist sehr geschäftig, d.h. dass in der Regel immer viel los ist und man aufpassen muss, das man die Leute nicht über den Haufen fährt!Falls es jemand schaffen sollte, diesen Spot in einer Line zu skaten, ohne Tricks auszulassen und ohne Slams, dann würde ich das gerne auf Video sehen!!!

What a nice place! What a nice long rail! Beautifull located lowrail next to a small private harbour in the very South of Hel-sinki City.

Was ein schöner Platz! Was ein schönes Rail! Wunderbar gelegenes Lowrail, di-rekt neben einem kleinem Privathafen, an der südlichen Spitze von Helsinki.

05 / FINNLANDIA HALLmannerheimintie 13 C, helsinki

Here you will find two nice skatespots, one next to the main entrance and one on the parking lot. Next to the main entran-ce you find two long nicely shaped black marble curbs. There is an intresting rail with a bank at the parkung lot. It`s not so easy to skate, but when you are used to it, it`s fun and it`s nice for taking photos and videos.

Hier findet man zwei coole Spots, der eine ist vor dem Haupeingang und der andere ist auf der anderen Seite des Ge-bäudes gelegen. Am Haupteingang findet man zwei ganz neue schwarze Mamor Curbs die eine leicht konvexe Biegung haben. Am Parkplatz ist eine interessan-te Rail+Bank Kombination. Die ist zwar nicht so leicht zu fahren, aber wenn man sich daran gewöht, macht es richtig Spaß. Ausserdem ist es ein guter Spot zum Foto-grafieren und zum Filmen.

07 / SAVELA FREESTYLE PARKsolavuorentie (not on the map, located in north of helsinki)

This skate park is in Savela, 10 km away from the centre of Helsinki, but still in Helsinki City. It‘s a really good park with some nice transitions, rails and banks. Just ask Mikka from swift2foot how to get there or ask one of the local skater.

Diesen Skatepark findet ihr in Savela, ungefähr 10 km vom der Innenstadt ent-fert, aber immer noch zu Stadt Helsinki gehörend. In diesem gutem Skatepark findet ihr einige gute Transitions , Rails und Banks. Also alles, was das Skater-herz braucht. Fragt einfach Mikka von swift2foot oder einen der Locals wie man zum Park kommt.

This outdoor skate park is located re-ally close to the Olympia Stadium and it‘s Youth hostel. The park is really build for skateboarding, but the way how they build it is kind of interesting...but I am sure that you can have a lot of fun there!

Dieser Outdoor Skatepark ist sehr nahe am Olympia Stadion und dessem Youthhostel gelegen. Der Park ist, wie so ziehmlich alle Skateparks, sehr stark für Skatebording gebaut, aber ich finde ihn ganz interessant und lustig zu skaten, ich bin mir sicher, dass ihr hier euren Spaß habt!

09 / INDOOR SKATE PARK:skeittihalli, emännänpolku 3, kontula

Skeittihalli is the only indoor skate park in Helsinki, to get there you have to take the metro to Kontula, which takes about 20 min. from the main station. After you found the entrance you have to go a view hundred steps downstairs which is really impressive somehow! For all the brave ones you can try to grind the hole rail down...if someone is killing that rail, wit-hout killing himself, please let me know. The skate park is quiet high and you will find a few different obstacles like banks quarters, pyramids, a mini ramp and a view more small obstacles. In another room behind the big hall, there‘s is ano-ther smaller hall with a mini ramp and a good shaped bow

Skeittihalli ist die einzigste Indoor Skatehal-le in Helsinki. Um dorthin zu kommen muss man mit der Metro nach Kontula fahren wo-für man ca. 20 min vom Hbf braucht. Nach-dem ihr den Eingag gefunden habt, müsst ihr mehrere Hundert Treppen in den Berg lau-fen, was wirklich eindrucksvoll ist. Die Trep-pen werden von einem Handrail begleitet, was wirklich hardcore ist. Falls sich jemand traut dieses Rail zu fahren ohne sich selbst umzubringen, laßt es mich bitte wissen!Der Skatepark ist recht groß und ihr fin-det einiges an verschiedenen Obstacles wie Banks, Quaters, eine Pyramide oder eine Miniramp und noch einige andere Kleinig-keiten. Hinter der großen Halle versteckt sich noch eine kleinere Halle mit einer Miniramp und einem guten, schnellen Bowl.

Eintritt: 3 €Tip: Donnerstags ist Mädelstag, no boys!Achtung: Die Skatehalle ist ist nur wärend der Winterzeit geöffnet!

what`s the best about rolling? it‘s an addiction. i love the feeling when you lace some nice trick and i like the style it holds.what`s the best about helsinki? eventhough it‘s the capital city it‘s not too crowded, so you get to skate pretty freely. people are nice and girls are beautiful!

When I arrived in Helsinki in 2007, the mbar was the first place where I went, because it is super central and it‘s a nice location. Besides tasty snacks, drinks and good coffee, you will find 13 PC Ter-minals and WLAN/WIFI to check your mails or to chat and hang around. On 3-5 days a week you can also listen to DJs and Life music acts, what makes this place a really great location during your skatetrip for a short or a longer visit!

Als ich 2007 in Helsinki ankam, bin ich als erstes in die “mbar“, weil sie super zent-ral gelegen ist und super stylisch aussieht. Neben leckeren Snacks, Getränken und gutem Kaffee findet man hier 13 PCs mit Internetzugang, sowie WLAN/WIFI Ver-bindung, um e-mails zu lesen, zu chatten oder ihr hängt einfach ein bisschen ab.

An 3-5 Tagen in der Woche geben ver-schiedenen DJs und Live Acts ihr Bestes, um euch den Abend so angenehm wie möglich zu machen, was diese Bar wirk-lich zu einem tollen Ort für einen Skate-trip macht!

In this original Greek Cafe you will find some really great baguettes and coffee! Since I found out that Finnish coffee is even worse then german coffe, it was great to be in this place and having af**king good coffee! Thanks for that...So if you´re going to be close to Kalevanka-tu, check out Cafe Delicato and say hello to the friendly staff.

In diesem original griechischen Café bekommt man wirklich unglaublich le-ckere Baquetts und Kaffee. Als ich 2007 schmerzhaft festellte, das finnischer Kaf-fee noch schlechter als deutscher Kaffee ist, war es eine tolle Erfahrung in diesem netten Café zu sein und einen verdammt guten Kaffee zu bekommen! Danke da-für... Also falls ihr euch mal in der Nähe von Kalevankatu herum treibt, laßt euch auf keinen Fall das „Cafe Delicato“ ent-gehen.

Das KIASMA ist ein architektonisch sehr modernes Museum mit einem schönen Café und einem gut ausgestattetem Buchladen. Das Museum ist sehr aktiv in der kulturel-len Landschaft Helsinkis und bietet neben abwechselnder zeitgenössischer Kunst auch eine Vielzahl von Veranstaltungen wie das „Urban Dance Festival“ während des Som-mers. Den Weg zum Museum findet man kinderleicht, es befindet sich in der Stadt, ca. 1 Minute Gehweg vom Hauptbahnhof.Während der Sommerzeit findet man aus-serdem direkt vor dem Museum eine tolle Miniramp um Sessions zu fahren. Ein per-fekter Ort, um während der Skatepausen über Kunst zu diskutieren!

The KIASMA is a modern architecture museum which includes a relaxing Cafe and an extensively book-shop. Wenn das Wetter euch mal nicht skaten las-sen sollte, findet ihr hier zwei Dinge um eure Zeit zu verschwenden. 1.: das „Finnkino“: hier könnt ihr euch so ziemlich alle kommer-ziellen „A-Movies“ reinziehen. Das Kino ist ein sehr modernes Gebäude und das eigent-lich lustige daran ist, dass es eine unheim-liche Anziehungskraft auf die finnischen Teenager hat. Hier findet man die neuesten Trends der finnischen Fashion Kids, was zum Teil. recht amüsant sein kann... Wenn ihr genug von Teenagern habt und etwas Ernsthafteres erleben wollt, solltet ihr die erste Etage des Tennispalatsi erklimmen und das Taidemuseum besuchen. Dieses Museum zeigt gute Ausstellungen finnischer und internationaler Kunst.

In the building of Tennispalatsi you will find two important things to waist your time, when the weather doesn‘t let you skate. The first one is the cinema “Finn-kino”. Here you will find all the great commercial A-movies. The Finnkino is a really modern cinema and the funny thing about it is, that it is the hotspot for all Helsinki teenies... here you can dis-cover the latest styles of Finnish fashion kids! When you have enough of kids, and you want to get serious, then you should go to the first floor of Tennispalatsi and enter the Taidemuseum. This museum present great exhibitions of Finish and international art.

Ein anderer Grund hier mal einzuschlagen ist, das ihr hier die Locals finden, mit denen ihr dann Sessions fah-ren könnt. Lasipalatsi ist ein original 30er Jahre Ge-bäude, neben einigen nicht so interessan-ten Geschäften für Skater findet man ein paar nette Bars, ein altes Theater und di-rekt neben dessen Eingang befindet sich eine kleine, aber nette Kunstgallerie. Geht einfach mal rein, öffnet euer Gehirn, lasst euch inspirieren und lasst die Kreativität in neue Skatestyles fließen...YEAH!!!

Myymälä2 is subterranean art gallerie and shop concept located in the design district. The gallerie/shop is not so easy to find because it´s entry is kind of co-vert, but when you find it you will enter the world of young finish art!

A LITTLE TRIP TO...a flee market

If you wanna check out an original Fin-nish flea market then go to the flea market in the end of the big road Bule-vardi. Here you find lots of old Finnish cloth,toys, books and of course a lot of trash...it‘s much fun to go here and to see what Finns have in their houses.

Wenn du einen echten finnischen Flo-markt abchecken willst, dann bist du beim Flohmarkt am Ende der Bulevardi Stra-ße genau richtig. Hier findest du neben unendlich viel Gerümpel aus finnischen Haushalten, Bücher, Spielzeug und ab und zu auch wirkliche Raritäten. Es ist wirklich schön sich hier ein wenig treiben zu lassen und sich anzusehen was Finnen so alles in ihren Häusern haben.

A LITTLE TRIP TO...Isle of Suomenlinna

Even if the weather is windy, cold and rainy, you should go for a little excursion to the isle of Suomenlinna, but the best way to go there is when it is warm and sunny! After 10 min. with a shuttle boat you arrive at Suomenlinna. Here you will discover lots of old castle constructions huge old cannons and thousands of nice places to have a barbecue and enjoy na-ture at it‘s best!

Auch wenn das Wetter schlecht ist, soll-te man sich nicht davon abhalten lassen eine kleine Reise nach Suomenlinna zu machen, aber am schönsten ist die Insel natürlich wenn die Sonne scheint und es warm ist. Nach 10 Minuten mit einem Schifftransfer kommt man auf Suomen-linna an.
