Branding

is essential to Fossil & Frames to ensure the best experience that every guest can enjoy. We distinguish the end users and cater to their specific needs. The detail oriented design is what separates Fossil & Frames from other boutique hotels. For example, the hotel pushes the brand through unique images that are projected on the walls and mylar glass. These images convey the concept of Fossil & Frames. Meanwhile, they connect with and build an emotional tie with the guests. Fossil&Framesalsooffersuniqueactivities such as ‘treasure hunting,’ ‘true detectives,’ and ‘dancing like the juniors.’ All in all, Fossil & Frames is a place to remember the past, and create the future.

Double Tree by Hilton Hotel & Spa Napa Valley – American Canyon is the world’s first Gold LEED-certified hotel that serves wine tourists in Napa Valley. The hotel currently has an add-on spa that is not a net-zero building. They also do not have an independent salon. The interior design of the spa looks very boring and does not match with the surroundings. My intent is to redesign the spa and add a salon to the resort. The design priority is to make the new spa and salon a net-zero and LEED

Platinum certified building with unique customer experience. I drew inspiration from the ancient Southwest Pueblo Great Houses. They were the pioneers who used natural and organic materials to build beautiful, sustainablehousesonthecliffs. The design concept is to create a biophilic, welcoming and spiritual space to introduce the ancient spirits to the customers. The spa plan is determined to incorporate the newest technology to create many wonders for the customers.

• Onyx Skylight systems ensure an optimized PV electrical generation adding multi-functional passive bioclimatic properties of thermal inner comfort since most of the UV and infrared radiation from the sun will be harvested by the silicon-based material (solar filter effect). Moreover, the air chamber of the insulating glass guarantees best thermal performance in terms of U and g

values.• Artificial

Intelligence controls TABOLA OLED Light Tablets to provide lighting after dark with very low energy cost and bright ambient lighting.

• Tilted roof collects rainwater for a water tank. Water is heated by the solar water heating system on the eaves. The eaves are also sunshades on the south and east side of the building to create a Net-Zero Spa & Salon.

Customers who walk into the space

would be amazed by the fresco on the

plaster walls. The fresco is painted

by local artists, and the pigments

are locally produced with organic

ingredients. The daylight and fresco work

together to make the space enchanting.

The bathers would enjoy the sunlight

shining through the tinted solar roof

while bathing in the hot tub. The indoor

fresco and outdoor plants bring the ancient

spirits into the spa and treatment rooms.

Three Mariotto

families own an apartment

building on 13 Wood St.,

San Francisco, California.

They requested a

renovation for their

existing apartments.

I decided to

bring the sunny, warm,

tropical and entertaining

Caribbean life-style

to their humble homes,

because they live in

a city that’s famous

for its gloomy and cold

summer fog. I chose three

elements from the islands

as my inspiration for

the design: river bank,

volcano and rain forest.

They symbolize peace,

power, and joy.

The design concept

is to create three unique

apartments that interact

with each other like

these three elements from

the tropical Caribbean.

Mariotto Residence

The hard lines and contrasting colors redefine the client’s rigorous work ethic. The lava shaped patio

is designed for the employees who work in the studio, they can enjoy the peacefulness of the nature and the color green while they are working on the computers.

The tree on the second floor patio recalls the rebirth of life on the volcano. The indoor aquarium brings a piece of the tropic into the space to create human interaction with nature.

Sanature is a brand

name for a beauty supply

store. This name has three

elements: sanitization,

signature and nature. These

are my design concepts for

the store.

Plants in wine corks

displayed in the windows

connect beauty and nature.

The store sign is on the top

left of the façade for people

to see from a distance.

The store has a circular

flow, and the cash wrap is

approachable in the center.

The colors and finishes in

the store have warm brown

and gray hues that make

differentskintoneslook

radiant and beautiful. The

living wall behind the cash

wrap connects to the cork

ceiling to envelop the store

in nature.

Sustainability is a

major part of the design.

Cork materials are made

from reclaimed wine corks,

ordered from a local source.

The lighting plan features

LED lights to cut down the

energy cost. Big windows

on the south side provide

Ten Ren Tea is a very famous tea brand in China; they obtain it from magnificent high-altitude tea gardens. Because Ten Ren is so prestigious, it is sold at a relatively high price range. Ten Ren is well known among established fans, yet, unfortunately, the superiority of the tea is not as well-known as this brand could be. My design intention is to open an avenue for this delightful tea brand to a broader market. Chinese ink paintings were used as an inspiration that depict the beauty of mountain mist. The concept is to create a soothing, peaceful, aromatically rich and beautiful tea shop in a simplistic format.

The aroma of the tea is exposed in the air throughout the store to advertise the superiority of the tea. The displays of tea are shaped like a Chinese landscape painting of mountains. They are made of recycled cardboard and are functional in accord with feng-shui. They prevent negative energy from entering the space, and instead welcome the visitors to smell the tea. The Kungfu Tea shows are fascinating as visitors are guided to the second area. The rear part of the store is a tea bar, where the rich Chinese tea culture is introduced, and a social venue for new fans. The venue could potentially become a culture phenomenon in Chinatown.

Henry Zhu is an environmentally-conscious interior design professional who cares about user experience, aesthetics and functionality of his design. He interned summer 2014 in the San Francisco Design Center at Lee Jofa & brunschwig & fils showroom as a memo room librarian.
