REFLECTIONS from fr. johnMy uncle, Monsignor Francis Purcell, who was the First Rector of Quigley Seminary
would often come out to our family home for Sunday dinner. As I got closer to
graduating from grade school, he would often say to me that I was going to go to
Quigley Seminary for High School. I would say to him if God wants me to do that I would
do it. So after grade school, I began my studies at Quigley Seminary in Chicago. At that
time Quigley was five years and then Mundelein the Major Seminary seven years. So, I
went to Quigley for four years and then left. I just didn’t think I was ready to continue.
After I left Quigley the Archdiocese of Chicago was no longer interested in me, so if I
was going to continue I had to search for a Diocese that would accept me. After
interviewing with several Dioceses I was accepted for the Diocese of Superior,
Wisconsin. So when school was ready to begin, I was informed that I was going to a
College Seminary in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I headed to La Crosse and spent the next year
and a quarter until I got sick and had to leave Seminary again. I was going to take six
months off to discern whether I really wanted to purse Priesthood. The Bishop of
Superior gave me His blessing and allowed me the time away. While I was home I visited
with a classmate from grade school, who lived around the corner from me. This day that
I was visiting his father came home from work and said to me. Why are you home you
should be in school? I told him why, so he said to me do you want a parttime job while
your thinking and I said sure.
The next day he called me and I went down town to Chicago where he worked and
interviewed for a parttime job. I was called the next day asking me when I could start
and I said right away. My Banking career which was going to be six months parttime
ended up being twentytwo and a half years. During those years I became very involved
in my Parish. I was a Lector, I took Communion to the homebound, I was an Altar server,
I taught Religious Education to the children and I also advised the Pastor as to what they
should do with their finances.
Until next time, Fr. John

Good Clean Fun, and a lot More!
May 31, June 1, 4 & 5
The end of the school year means it is time to clean up our parish meeting rooms and
the Formation storage pod. While it might sound like work, it really can be fun. Kids
from 3rd grade through high school are invited to join us for some good clean fun. We
will take items out of storage into Room 1 for sorting, repurposing, repacking, and
tossing. (Some of the tossed stuff is sort of cool, and up for grabs).
We will get our favorite cleaner out, and have
fun cleaning tables with Barbasol and the
water hose. (Getting wet is the only option
here!) We will break for lunch (bring your
own, we provide snacks throughout the day).
We will have a postlunch movie (relax and
enjoy, and maybe eat some popcorn).
Over the course of 4 days we will clean all our tables and chairs, recycle books, sort and
repack storage items, and completely redecorate all the parish meeting rooms. Come
help us! You get to pick posters for the walls, have first chance at taking home some of
our discarded treasures, and so much more. It’s work, it’s fun, it’s service to our par‐
ish. Come as many days as you want, just please let us know you are coming. Parents,
email Roxanna at [email protected] with name, dates and times your child will
join us.
ConfirmationTo be a Baptism or Confirmation
sponsor, one must be a confirmed,
practicing Catholic over the age sixteen.
If you wish to be confirmed, our sessions
for adults begin Sunday, April 15. Join us
after the 8:30 Mass in the Parish Hall. (It
will be full of children, but you will move
to another room!) Bring a copy of your
Baptismal Certificate, which is necessary
before we are able to have you
Confirmed in the Church. If you have
questions, contact Roxanna at

Have Summer Fun With Pope Francis!
Many of you are familiar with “Flat Stanley,” a
paper friend you take places and take pictures
with him. Traveling Pope Francis is the same
principle.
Buy a traveling Pope Francis for $1.50 from the
formation office or the main office. Your Pope
Francis will have a number on the back from 1
150. Post your pictures using only your number
this is to maintain safety on the internet. If you
send the pictures to [email protected].
Kat Perkins, our youth coordinator, will post them to the parish Facebook page identifying
you by number only. Tell us where you were, and
what you liked about the place.
See how many pictures of Traveling Pope Francis you can share with
the parish. We will put your number onto a ticket each time you submit
a photo of Pope Francis in a new place. After Labor Day, we will have
drawings for gift cards, and some lucky boys or girls (or mem or wom‐
en, we don’t discriminate against adults!) will win! It is easy, and fun.
Traveling Pope Francis will be a reminder to pray each day, and hope‐
fully inspire you to read more and learn more about him and our amaz‐
ing faith.

EVERYDAY stewardshipRecognize God in Your Ordinary Moments My wife and I have used the same baptismal gown for all 3 of our children.
It is a very long traditional gown made with fabric taken from my wife's
first communion dress and my motherinlaw's wedding gown. It is a
symbol not just of each child being washed clean by the sacrament, but
also of family and how faith has been passed down through generations.
Faith is a gift and that gown shows how this family has taken seriously the
cultivation of that faith and the sharing of it with those we love the most.
By our baptism we are called to a discipleship that compels us to share our
faith with others. It is not always easy, but it would be wrong to horde that
faith and not let it shine for others to see. When we think about a
stewardship way of life, we sometimes focus on material goods, our talents and skills, or our time. But faith is a gift that needs to be treated in
a similar way. We are heirs with Jesus Christ to this rich tapestry of faith
and the Church. If all of us were to hide that faith and not seek to share it
with others, that lineage would end with us.
We live during a time in history where in some lands people are finding
Jesus in huge numbers, while in other places the numbers of people in the
pews is declining sharply. We can spend all our time talking about these
realities or we can choose to respond to our baptismal call. Jesus
commanded us to go forth and make disciples of all nations. Maybe we
can begin with our neighbor.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? catholic traditions explained

Q uestion:
What is a sacramental seal and where did it come from?
A nswer:
Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our
life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The
same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A
sacramental seal or character is a theological concept to describe the life
changing and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal "by which the
Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the
Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to
Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible" (#1121).
Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It's a spiritual
"point of no return" whereby we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit
and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these
sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is
made, and we are called by God to be his people. Nothing can change
that, not even our own sinfulness.

ioners for making the WINGS project “Roses for Mary” a huge
success. The proceeds are part of
