How Does it Look Like to be Church for Others?
Young Families
Young families, for congregations, they’re gold.
These families are in high demand in small
congregations, they bring children, laughter, and
life to a congregation.
We love having lots of kids in our congregation,
Youth and diversity...truly they are a blessing.
But…allow me to tell you a story.
A few moons ago I used to go to my home church with my two little
children. My kids were quite active in church, like most toddlers, and it
was a real struggle being in church with them...WHY? Because I noticed
how a few people would “whisper” about my kids, I could see how
they would look at me very judgingly. I didn’t want to be in church, it
was easier to stay home and wait for them to be a little older to then,
start going again.
A few weeks ago I told you about how we’re called to be a church for
others; how we would have to take into consideration other peoples
reality, and with that reinvent us as a community of faith. In the pro-
cess we will loose, but also we will gain.
If we want young families, we need to provide a welcoming space for
their children we are to receive them with love, patience and ac-
ceptance. We need to give them their space in the congregation to
grow, in faith and love.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them…”
Pastor Aida

November Special Giving:
Mission Statement Project RETURN (Returning Ex-incarcerated people To Urban Realities and Neighborhoods) ex-ists to help men and women make a positive, permanent return to community, family and friends. History In 1980, Cross Lutheran Church brought together interested parties to consider the challenge of high recidivism in Milwaukee. As a result, Project RETURN was formed in 1981, and for nearly 40 years has walked alongside ex-incarcerated people providing assistance with employment, housing, and encouragement to change lives and the community. Services offered by Project RETURN Project RETURN’s staff collectively have over 65 years of service to our clients with the organization. Programs offered address direct needs of those we serve, reducing barriers to increase the prospects of success and lower the chances of recidivism. Often, people come to Project RETURN at a time of crisis—not looking beyond their immediate needs. Our ex-perienced staff members—most of whom are formerly incarcerated individuals—work one-on-one with clients, helping them to navigate through the crisis moment and then to look beyond that situation to “next steps.” Clients can sign up for our programs by contacting the offices or just stopping by on a Tuesday or Thursday morning between 9:00 am and Noon.
Thanks to many helping hands Redeemer had another successful fish fry! A total of 158 meals were served which resulted in a lot of satisfied customers. After expenses Redeemer was able to donate $499.10 to LSS and gave $332.74 back to Redeemer.

MISSION PARTNER—ST. JOHN’S, WEST MILWAUKEE
HELP US MAKE PLARN FOR THE HOMELESS!
Please save your plastic grocery bags* - make sure they are pretty clean, bring them to church, and put them in the boxes marked for our mission partner church, St. John’s of West Milwaukee. (* - IMPORTANT—Please donate only typical grocery
bags, not the thicker bags which Sendik’s and some oth-
er stores use.)
“Plarn” - crocheting with plastic bags— is used to make mats for people to sleep on when
they have no bed to turn into at night. Our Plarn group has been meet-ing on Thursdays at 1:00 pm to work on this project. Any questions can be directed to Neva Rublee at 673.2656, or Pat Dobbe.
Things are looking a bit brighter at Redeemer! Thanks to Gene Falkenstein, Arden Buchholz,
Luke Otto, Lynn Baldwin, Bruce and Laurie Horst scraping and
painting is partially completed. If the weather cooperates, more may
be completed yet this year.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES
We are meeting on Thursday evenings from 4:15—5:15 in the
Fireside Room.
Very sharp students again this year:
Annie Nettesheim and Georgia Ruegg (7th grade)
Pray for these students as they move spiritually from being kids to being
adults. When you see them around church encourage them in their faith.
The Fireside Room will be part of our Confirmation Class and Youth
Project. They will transform it (with our help) into their new gathering
place.
VETERANS DAY is Monday, November 11th. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all military veterans (the
separate holidays Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day honor those who died while in military service, and those
currently serving in the military, respectively.) Since 1978, November 11th has been the permanent date for this
holiday. Many, if not most, government agencies will be closed on Monday, November 11th in observance of
Veterans Day this year. Locally, a Memorial Service will be held at 11 am at Sawyer Park, with an Avenue of Flags
display, weather permitting. A Veterans/Spouses dinner will be held at Hartford Town hall at 5 p.m.
THANKSGIVING DAY is Thursday, November 28th. Since 1941, the fourth Thursday of November has been the
permanent date for this holiday. Many, if not most, government agencies will be closed on Thursday,
November 28th in observance of Thanksgiving Day this year.

November 17 As the church year ends we remember and celebrate that Christ is King. Luke’s crucifixion scene with Jesus flanked by the two thieves shows the wide scope of Jesus’ offer of sal-vation. Whatever evil or crime one has done is no barrier for acceptance into Jesus’ kingdom. Jesus offers direct access to salvation to persons worthy of the most extreme punish-ment for their sins. He enters His kingdom, where even those deemed unrighteous (the soldiers and the second thief) may share in the salvation of the righteous. His reign is not a death-dealing system intent on punishment, but a “paradise” that “today” extends even to those whom we do not think deserve it. If Christ can show such forgiveness shouldn't we be more tolerant and open to forgive also?
November 24 This week is the first Sunday of Advent, the first Sunday of the new year in the church calendar. The season of Advent is a season of waiting; as a time of waiting it is a time of prepa-ration. We prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ. We celebrate His coming in the past at birth and His return at the Second Coming. As we prepare for His coming we might follow Paul's challenges to live honorably, to put on gratitude rather than succumb to jealousy, to be peaceable with our family and others rather than following old patterns of quar-reling, to eat and drink with self control to name a few. Perhaps taking such steps would open us up to our true selves. Perhaps these would be little rays of light piercing the darkness of our false selves. Perhaps in these ways we might put on the Lord Jesus Christ and bring a little bit of his future into our present time of waiting and preparation.
Seeds of Ministry Nuggets
November 3 “I know that my Redeemer lives!” For millennia, through prayer and preaching and beautiful music, the Church has proclaimed that Re-deemer to be Jesus the Christ. It is a word of hope uttered by Job in the face of despair. It is hope of life in the face of death. refusal to give up on God, the hope that God will “remember” Job and “long for” him. It is his hope that his Redeemer lives and that in the end, Job himself will see God. And so it is a word appropriate to this All Saints’ Sun-day, when we remember and celebrate the saints who have gone be-fore us, the saints (including Job) who clung in faith, against all odds, to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of the living who is faithful even until death, and beyond.
November 10 Our lives, and the world around us, are filled with problems, trials, wars, and even predictions that the end of the world is upon us. This has happened in every age. When bad things happen -- and they will -- we should not be terrified or lose hope or follow anyone proclaiming these are signs of God’s judgment and the end. Instead, we should trust that God remains present in our lives. He is always with us and faithful to us.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY with Pastor Aida.
Adult Bible Study meets in the Gathering Room Sundays at 8:30. We have been using Fr. James Martin, Jesuit priest, popular author and speaker; learning about prayer, Scripture, the importance of humor. We will continue to dip into the work of Fr. Martin from time to time. Interesting, solid theology.
With the election coming up, the airwaves will be inundated with political ads. This fall, in Adult Study, we will examine some of the claims made and issues raised in the ads, as well as statements by candidates in light of Scripture and Christian faith.
The more folks who participate, the greater the opportunity to learn from one another. Everyone is welcome any Sunday.
