We, being a group of men who like to make beautiful music, with families who enthusiastically support our Barbershop activity and alumni of past singers offering their continuous encouragement, and with patrons and sponsors who continue to show their strong approval, we as a family of Heralds are truly blessed. Our 2015 performance season has allowed our entire Heralds family to positively represent our art form to the Tampa Bay area, the State of Florida, and to our international audience at this year’s annual convention.

Now is the time to give thanks for the joy our Heralds family brings and to truly engage in the activities of this holiday season. It is time for Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and all beliefs that inspire families, and each of us, to pause and reflect on all of our blessings.

I wish everyone a safe, restful, and happy holiday season. ~Dave H

Updates from Black Hills

State UniversityFrom Adam Thomsen

lack Hills State University is gearing up for the holidays and the end of the semes-ter which means lots of performances. This

past weekend BHSU concert choir, chamber singers and band programs took part in a two day holiday concert event in Meier Hall. The concert was a huge success for all programs.

BHSU has officially started a barbershop quartet. The members are Angel Simental – Baritone, Micah Pennel – Bass, JD Schroeder – Tenor and Adam Thomsen – Lead. They are currently working on Christmas music and will be going around Spearfish singing holiday songs. Upcoming events:

December 3- 5 is BHSU Chamber singers Madrigal dinner. Tickets are available for the 3rd. Just Google Black Hills State University Madrigal dinner to buy your tickets now.

December 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Meier Hall, Cody Pepi-tone will have his Senior Recital, Cody sings High tenor in Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. Some of the selections he will be singing are Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted from Handel’s Messiah, La Fuite by Deparc featuring Dr. Nancy Roberts, a vocal pro-fessor, and when you couldn’t believe it couldn’t be any better Cody will singing I believe from the Broad-way Musical The Book of Morman.

In February the BHSU Concert Choir will be travel-ing to Sioux Falls to perform Verdi’s Requiem.

Hope you can come to any of the events happen-ing at BHSU!

BWhat O.C. Cash Forgot to Tell Us

by Bill GibbonsFrom the PROBE website

1. There is no such thing as being a little flat. 2. The worst (insert your choice: tenor lead, bari or

bass) always sings the loudest. 3. 90 % of the members of any given barbershop

chorus will consider themselves to be in the top 50 % of that chorus talent pool.

4. The older you get, the better your voice used to be.

5. There is to much apathy in most chapters ... but who cares.

6. Chorus favorite; a bass, bari or tenor who would say, just once, that he wasn’t brought down by the lead section.

7. Chorus sadist; the guy who feels obligated to blow the pitchpipe at the end of the song.

8. Stages in the life of a lucky barbershopper: • Who’s Joe Schner? • Let’s get Joe Schner in our quartet. • Let’s get a Joe Schner type in our quartet. • Let’s get a young Joe Schner in our quartet. • Who’s Joe Schner

9. God has given man the seemingly infinite capac-ity to remember countless tags plus one of the chapter chorus contest songs.

10. The three other guys in your quartet will always have the uncanny ability, without any appar-ent signals between them, to simultaneously go sharp.

11. The guy who says that Stage Presence is an easy, risk-free way to get added contest points should be shot. Twice!

12. There is nothing wrong with being seen by the Chorus Director while looking at your watch...try to avoid his seeing you shaking it.

13. All choruses have chaos...the successful ones are those who hide this fact from the judges, at least most of the time.

14. Leads; the longer a song is, the higher the prob-ability that the tag will be in your comfort zone.

15. Wear white pants to all chorus rehearsals. No one will ever ask you to help with the risers.

When most Illinois folks go to Florida, they head for Disney World or the Beach. Not Doug Finkbiner. The CCC singer with 15 years of barbershop experience, sought out a four-hour practice session held by the Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony and enjoyed every minute while getting to sing with the 85 man chorus that placed 9th in the world last summer in Pittsburgh (85.9 average). Following the rehearsal, he had time to reacquaint himself with Drew Kirkman, now the Assistant Director of HoH. They knew each other when Doug sang with the Banks of the Wabash Chorus (Terre Haute), many years ago.

BUSY BOYJoshua Wiggs (EIU student) will have a busy Sunday. At 3 PM, he’ll besinging in the CCC Concert. At 4:30 PM, he’ll be singing with the EIUChoral Group in their Christmas Concert. Then he’ll rush over to Mattoon,in time to sing with the CCC at their 7 PM Concert...and he also sings in aquartet. The vocal folds will be flapping for several hours.

Wowing The CrowdThe Heralds sang for a sold out crowd at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on November 29th.

What a lovely church, and a great place for a show!

Thanks to the Garvin Brothers for arranging the gig and finding some new folks for the Chorus to sing to.

Heralds Making The News!Wednesday, November 11, 2015 Brad Stager, Special Correspondent for the Tampa Tribune, wrote a terrific write-up published in the paper stating "Snowy tunes and the story of Christmas, sung a cappella, are hallmark features of the Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony annual Christmas show — and this year’s presentation of “A Christmas Celebration” is no exception."

The article brought in several phone calls for tickets. Yippee!

Right: Tony De Rosa sings solo.

Heralds Host Another Great Guest Night

Thank you Angels and Heralds!

You helped the Heralds host another great guest night! The evening was a huge success for our guests, members, and visitors from near and far. Guest Night is always fun, informative and entertaining for everyone. It is always good to see Alumni, non-singing members, wives, friends and family come together! So good to see ladies we haven’t seen for some time!

Many, many, many thanks to Chuck Steiner & Bob Slaney for giving us light (!!) and for getting the lobby set up … to Roxanne, Annalisa, Nanci, Shannon, Bev, Kaye and Carolyn for your help with buffet set-up and helping to keep the food items fresh, hot and cold, for an encore! And what would we do without help from Bryan Hevel bringing all the coolers, beverages and ice! Thank you to Dick Sipple for his help all around and cleanup, to Larry Clapp for getting tables, his ‘ladder reach’ and help everywhere needed and enduring ant bites to change light bulbs.

Thank you to all our Angels and Heralds for bringing delicious-ness to the buffet! We had a tasty selection of really good food items! Everyone enjoys the variety and delicious choices you provide for an even more impressive warm welcome and camaraderie. You are very much appreciated … and your help always makes a difference. Everything was terrific!! Thank you to everyone who helped and thank you for supporting our great Heralds of Harmony!

May your holidays be Blessed in every way,

Dianne Roberts

A big “thank you” to our show volunteers for giving your time to support the Heralds of Harmony “Christmas Celebrations” and to everyone who contributed to the buffet, dessert and fruit tables. A very special thank you to Larry, Chuck, Bryan and David for helping the two of us until the doors were locked to load, clear and clean up the many pathways from the Chorus, our guest performers and hundreds of patrons. In addition to the many tasks for show production and performance preparation, all the support activity for our Heralds successful, smooth running and fun show days just would not happen without you. The Heralds thank you and we thank you. Thank you to the families who support their Herald in preparation for performance day too! We wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and warm, safe travels wherever the holidays may take you —Dianne Roberts & Roxanne Clapp

Rehearsal NotesHoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes. Here they are if you missed them.

Rehearsal Notes, November 16, 2015by Russ Powell, Tenor

Excellent Evening of Singing and Camaraderie: Ralph and Drew got the evening off to a strong start by conducting a great choreo session on “Eyes Medley” and “Slowboat to China." Drew reminder: In between the planned choreo moves, make sure you are engaged physically. Remaining constantly, physically engaged between the moves will make the planned moves seem more natural and connected and less mechanical or abrupt. Christmas show is three short rehearsals away. Sell Tickets. Sell, Sell, Sell.

New baritone, Sergio Perez is recognized with a freshly minted name badge. Congratulations to Sergio.

Singing Exercise: 1. SING WRONG, 2. SING WRONG, 3. SING RIGHT!! Right and wrong singing; how are they different? Hear the difference, feel the difference. Recognize wrong back, recognize wrong forward, then recognize right forward with resonance, placement, lift and freedom. This contrast exercise should demonstrate the difference. By singing the same word, Tony had us (1) sing wrong back in our throats to get all resonance, but no placement, no freedom. Then he had us (2) sing wrong forward to get all placement, but no resonance, no freedom, no lift. Then, by knowing how not to sing, he had us (3) sing right forward by incorporating the freedom, the lift, the space and the resonance into the forward placement to create the correct singing position. Hear the difference, feel the difference. Practice with the same word until it sounds good.

Vocal Coloring: Vocal coloring is a choice. Placement needs to be matched up between the voice parts. Even though we may be on different vowels, if the placement is matched, the chord will ring. More placement in the high or low notes. Don't let your high or low range change your sound production. You can have the same brilliance in your sound production no matter where you are on the register. Don't let it fall back. Keep the placement forward. For example, by having the Baritones sing the Lead part, Tony was trying to get the Baritones to use the same placement as the Leads in order to transfer the same

Lead vocal coloring to their part. Similarly, when the Tenors post, the other voice parts need to match the placement for enhanced sound production.

Affirmation: Physical affirmation. Need more give and take between singer and director. Show your excitement. Physical affirmation will help us recognize our achievements and will help us remember the good feeling it gave us. It will help us keep it. It will help us remember that the goal has been achieved. This will trigger positive feelings, knowing when we get it right, we deserve to get excited.

Next Rehearsal: Monday, November 23, 2015. Jacksonville show review for participants begins at 6 p.m. Regular rehearsal starts at 6:30 p.m. Focus on “Mary, Did You Know” and brush-up work on "Little Drummer Boy," “Angels We Have Heard on High” and "O Come All Ye Faithful." Run everything for the November 29 show. Watch for Friday blast.

Sunday, November 29, 2015: Show and performance at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1199 S. Highland Ave., Largo Fl, 33770. Call time: 12:30 p.m., on the risers: 12:45 p.m.

Rehearsal Notes, November 23, 2015by Russ Powell, Tenor

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare: Difficult to sugarcoat last night's rehearsal. If the old adage holds true, we are going to have a really good show this weekend, because the rehearsal was something less than stellar. Tony went through the show lineup in rapid-fire succession. Even "Jingle Bells" rang slightly off-key. The Message is loud and clear. Time to up our game. When we are good, we are really good. But it takes lots of preparation. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare. Know your notes and words, Smile, ‘Presentate,' review choreography, focus, be ready to sing when the pitch is blown, manage your square. This is a show chorus, guys!!! Now is our big opportunity to shine. Have fun!!!

"Eyes Medley”: Don't forget ‘danger' move in "Eyes Medley." Tip: Comes right after infinity nose move.

Next Performance: This Sunday, November 29, 2015 at St. Paul United Methodist Church; 1199 S. Highland Ave.; Largo, FL 33770. Riser call is 12:30 p.m. Recommended that you come dressed in uniform, but there will be a place to change.

Uniform: Tux pants, white shirt, black vest, purple tie, black shoes, no jacket.

90-minute show with no intermission. Brad Grabill will emcee. Lineup: “Tonight, Tonight," “Slowboat to China," “Believe," "If There's Anybody Here from Out of Town," "Eyes Medley," “Smile," "God Bless the USA," "Armed Forces Medley," "God Bless America” — Equinox sings two songs followed by the Chorus: "Caroling, Caroling," "Jingle Bells 2012," “Snow," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Birthday of A King," "Joy to the World."

Next Rehearsal: Monday, November 30, 2015. Guest night next week. Invite talented singers. Food will be served. Continue to review Christmas repertoire. Early-bird rehearsal at 6:30 p.m. for Jacksonville Show participants.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Music Team!

Rehearsal Notes, November 30, 2015 by Russ Powell, Tenor

GUEST NIGHT: Thanks to the “Heralds Angels" for all the delicious food. That was quite a spread. Andy's chicken is always a hit. Introducing our guests to sectional rehearsals was a new wrinkle and a great way to demonstrate how we develop our unit sound as we solidify notes and words. The show is one rehearsal away. Keep selling tickets!! The conducting 'volley’ near the end of rehearsal between Tony and Drew was really cool and a fun, playful way to end a great evening of good singing. This Chorus is showing chemistry!

PERFORMANCE SMILE: Our performance smile has teeth! As you catch your breath at the end of a song or the end of a performance, acknowledge the applause by breathing through your nose and showing a big smile on your face. Find those people in the audience and thank them for all that applause with a great big smile with lots of teeth. A closed mouth, lip-only smile is not a good way to show respect for audience applause. Be respectful with an endearing, warm smile. Acknowledge applause with active, engaging faces. Find that person and smile.

WATCH THE DIRECTOR: Tony frequently changes the dynamic level to add artistry to our sound production. Watch for feathering the sound to make it softer or tapering the sound

down. When hands go in, get softer, when hands go out, get louder. Watch the Director!

FILL THE MIDDLE: Fill the middle of the note. On long sustained notes, give them energy and destination. Sound needs to grow. Need to finish each note. Need to hit and finish the note with some strength and don't let it fade away to nothing. Grow the note with destination and purpose.

SONG NOTES:

"Birthday of A King” - Tenors: Watch the "lu-jah!" in measure 15. Note the different "lu-jah!" in measure 34. When Basses, or any part, take over the melody, need to sing more Lead-like, with the same kind of sound production as the Leads. More pretty and lyrical, not heavy and wide. As we approach the climactic end, breathe shorter breaths to show excitement and intensity of the message: The Birthday of "THE KING!!!"

“Snow” - Bell chords — "crisp new fallen snow" — keep volume a little lighter. Fast paced bell chords should be crisp. No snow plowing or heavy snow. Light, newly fallen snow.

NEXT PERFORMANCE: Wednesday, December. 9, 2015. Fox TV-13 on "Good Day Tampa Bay." Early morning gig; call time is 7:30 a.m. This just in from Matt Crisostomo: Attire is tux with white tux shirt, red tie, red handkerchief, black vest, jacket.

NEXT REHEARSAL: No rehearsal on Monday next week. Rehearsal is moved to Wednesday, December 9, 2015. This is the same day as Fox TV-13 show promotion.

CHRISTMAS SHOW PREP: Final preparations and run-throughs were made as we ramp up to the SHOW that everybody is waiting for. The biggest thing now is to be mindful of emotion and be visually engaged in whatever the moment of the song. We are selling “joy," we are selling “happy," we are selling “the season." Especially the first half, Tony wants to see a lot of bright faces on stage. Have fun!!!

LOAD-IN: Friday night, December 11, 2015, 6:30-8 p.m. at USF. All hands on deck to help out. The trailer was fully loaded last night, so no help will be required at the church on Friday.

SONG NOTES:

"Jingle Bells” - on the 3/4 time measures ("all the way"), give a 5% lift and slight volume increase. Good job on tempo and rhythms. Don't let it run away. This is a trot, not a gallop.

“Snow” - Bell chords, hit and get away. Keep crisp. When the Tenors start the bell chord, Basses need to be lighter on their entrance.

"Secret of Christmas” - Be warmer in your sound production. Baritones sound more like a viola.

“Caroling, Caroling” - No decrease in energy. Faces high and buoyant.

"O Come All Ye Faithful” - Full body sound. Tall, full, not louder, but taller. Commanding sound.

"Joy To The World” - More presence in the sound.

“Mary, Did You Know?” - Harmony parts, know the right vowel target!!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2015 - CHRISTMAS SHOWS: USF School of Music, 3755 W. Holly Drive, Tampa, FL 33620. Chorus call: 10:30 a.m. in dressing room uniform drop off. “Friends of the Heralds” (FOH) is a fund-raising program that is an important part of the Heralds yearly operating budget. Our mission is to preserve and further develop a cappella singing through musical excellence. FOH was established to help sustain Heralds of Harmony financial needs as we increase the number of singers on the risers and continue to improve our musical performance. We are a non-profit organization supported by our performance ticket sales, dues and grants. Under the direction of Tony De Rosa, we will continue to offer the best musical and entertainment experience for our audience. This year we placed in the top ten worldwide at the International Chorus Competition of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Heralds are poised to continue this significant growth and progression.

FOH allows members, Alumni, as well as our friends, family, and barbershop fans, to assist us on our musical journey and support our financial needs. Your tax-deductible contribution is very much appreciated and will help us in this endeavor.

If you wish to write a check, please send to: Heralds of Harmony; Treasurer - Allen Kelly; P. O. Box 274076; Tampa, Florida 33688-4076 or click ‘Donate’ here:

Thank you to our “Friends of the Heralds” who have supported us, and we hope you will do so once again.
