Help us prepare kids in need for Back to School!

This month our church is collecting school supplies for HOPE Helps annual “Back to School Bash.” This is a list of items FUMCO has been asked to provide for distribution to local families in need:

Backpacks Combination locks Crayons Pens: Blue, Black, and/or Red Socks: Teen/Adult Underwear: Teen/Adult

Please drop off donations to the church no later than Sunday, July 26th.

This is the seventh year that HOPE will provide children in need with the supplies necessary to start the first day of school looking good, feeling good, and equipped with the basic tools for academic success. This year, FUMCO has the honor of hosting this event on our campus on Saturday, August 1st. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Dave Bless at 407-405-2581. There are many opportunities and ways to lend hand! If you would like to see a complete list of school supplies needed or find out more information, visit the HOPE website at http://www.hopehelps.org.

The Military Support Team will not be meeting in July or August, however, we are still collecting items to mail to the troops on a weekly basis, as usual. Items can be dropped off and placed in the blue tub in front of Jeanette's desk in the church office. Magazines, personal hygiene items and snacks are always a welcome treat to the soldiers. Our regularly scheduled meetings will resume on September 13th. All are invited to attend. We will begin the planning of our Veteran's Day Luncheon, which will be held on Sunday, November 8th. Come join us and help in the planning of this event. Here is a thank you note recently received from Dawn Gregory: Liz, There is not a moment within my day that I don’t give praise to the power that surrounds us! You and your church’s energy helped me and many others by giving us the connection back home. I have been blessed to have been given life, but also through your kindness which allowed me to give to others from the many care boxes, to the cards from the amazing artists (children), and the camo stockings (which really impressed our General). Your dedication has been so much love for me. As my journey will end here, your presence will always be felt.

--Dawn Gregory

FUMCO FAMILIES: MEET AT THE BEACH! July 1st, July 22nd, July 29th, August 5th

10:00 AM - Noon

We’ll be at the 27th Avenue beach approach in New Smyrna Beach. Bring your own sunscreen, lunch, beach gear, and adult!

A huge thank you to all our wonderful VBS volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty to help make this year’s program such a tremendous success! Special thanks go to the many volunteers who spent countless hours helping to prep for this event, as well as to our registration assistants, kitchen crew, drama team, crew leaders, recreation and crafts leaders, youth leaders, worship leaders, and adult volunteers. We also appreciate all of the supplies and donations. We had more than 325 children enrolled in this year’s VBS (plus 50+ JCs and 40+ adults), and we are so grateful for the opportunity to share God’s love with the children of our church and community. Next year, we are bringing back the Go Fish curriculum featuring “Backstage with the Bible,” so get ready to have more fun as we start the planning process!

Thank You

FEED THE WHALE POD Our annual Whale of a Sale will be October 2-3, and we encourage everyone to bring your gently used items to the pods located in the back of the parking lot. Tax receipts are available for donated items. No clothing, gas-powered items, or large exercise equipment yet. Contact the church office (407-365-3255) for the combination to the lock and/or to let us know if you need to have larger items picked up.

WHALE PICK-UPS NEEDED? We now have another pod located in the back of church parking lot waiting to be filled! If you have furniture or other large items, please contact Ben Heise (904-859-1985) to schedule a pick-up. We are also looking for pick-up volunteers. If you can donate your time, truck and/or trailer, send Ben an email at [email protected] or give him a call. Thank you!!

PLANT DONATIONS NEEDED This is a reminder to all of our garden enthusiasts that plant donations and clippings will be needed for our Whale of a Sale. The entire community looks forward to this event and loves coming to the gazebo to check out our plant sale. We hope to once again have a wide variety and large number of plants to offer. No green thumb? No problem! We could also use donations of pots, potting soil, and garden tools. Thank you!

VENDORS WANTED Back by popular demand! This year, we will once again host vendors on the green during the Whale of a Sale. If you are looking to market your craft or product, have some fun and make some money, please contact Bertha Mucherera (859-935-0603 or [email protected]).

MYTH #4: An active caregiver might feel,

“But I’m not really doing anything.”

Each of our active care-givers has said it and meant it, "It just doesn't feel like I did anything!" They all know better -- on several counts. First of all, the care-receivers have told them otherwise: "This has been so helpful" or "You've been so good for me" or a simple heart-felt "Thank you." The messages came unsolicited and with sincerity. Second, they know how hard they have worked at it, beginning with 50 hours of training and then regular group meetings to reinforce and support each other in how to go about Stephen Ministry -- not to mention actually being there for the care-receiver. Being an authentic listener IS real work.

Third, our training told us it would be like this. We know our job is not to create a solution to fix some problem. The role has been described as a ministry of presence . . . to walk alongside someone suffering pain or loss. How hard should

that be? And finally, we all have accepted that God is the cure-giver. Stephen Ministers are simply care-givers. Maybe it is when we don't try to beat God to the punch that we are most effective. So, in that sense, maybe this is not a myth. It is about what God does, not what Stephen Ministers do. For more information about our Stephen Ministry program at First United Methodist Church of Oviedo, contact one of our Stephen Leaders: Diane Bless, Karen Quick or Jim Wottring. Or you may also speak with one of our trained Stephen Ministers ([email protected] or 407-365-3255). Our Stephen Ministry team is here to help you!

Thank you to the wonderful blood donors who gave up a unit of blood on June 14th. We collected eight units and Blood One thanks each one of you. Blood donations are way down in the summer and they are always short of what is needed. You may have helped save a life! Thank you!

BLOOD PRESSURE checks will continue through the summer months in

the portico of the main sanctuary between services. The dates are

July 12th and August 9th.
