Enjoy a bike as a convenient complement to the tramway. Vélomagg is a new service opened by Montpellier Agglomeration in June 2007. Every day more people jump on… and when you see the low rental fee, you’ll have 2 reasons to want to join them!This is also a great way to discover neighbouring villages, and with just a little more pedalling, why not enjoy rare pleasure and head all the way to the beach?

Light and practical bikesWith their aluminium mono-frame design, Vélomagg’ bikes weigh only 17 kg, which is 5 kg under the average weight of other self-service bikes. The use of an “acatane” driveshaft keeps you from getting dirty from chain grease, and derailing is a thing of the past! With an integrated generator light in front, and drum brakes in the rear, Vélomagg’ bikes help you ride in complete security, day and night. The bikes even have a bike-rack and basket to make it easier for you to carry your things around.

July 6 – 7, 2009If you love cycling, now’s the time to come get an inside look! From Saturday July 4th to Sunday the 26th, 2009, the 96th Tour de France covers a total distance of around 3,500 km all around the country.

Monday July 6: arrival in the Grande MotteStarting in Marseille, the Tour de France’s 3rd stage ends here in the seaside community of the Grande Motte.

Tuesday July 7: time trials over 38 km in and around the city.This 4th stage marks the great comeback of team time-trials, which have not been part of the past 4 editions of the Tour de France.

With its divine mix of old and new, Montpellier Agglomeration’s Fabre Museum takes you on a tour of the art world that covers many centuries. Now reopened after 4 years of complete reno-vation by Montpellier Agglomeration, the Fabre Museum now offers visitors natural circulation between the 17th century Collège de Jésuites, the 1828 Fabre Museum established in the Mas-sillian private mansion and the modern 19th cen-tury additions, notably the Gallery of Columns built in 1875-1878.

A new wing has enabled the museum to open its exhibits to contemporary art as well, which is highlighted by the exceptional donation by Pierre Soulages of 20 paintings (with another 12 on loan). A truly one-of-a-kind exhibit.

See an exceptional collection by 17th century Dutch and Flemish painters, along with French and Italian masters such as Allori, Veronese, Ribera, Dominicain, Zurbaran, Poussin, Bourdon, Ranc, Coypel and more. Not to mention modern and contemporary collections from Delacroix to Bazille and Courbet. Altogether nearly 800 major works are on display to the delight of all. The quality of the Montpellier Agglomeration museum places it among the leading fine arts collections in France and in all of Europe!

Triumphal ArchAt the end of the 17th century, the king’s intendant decided to build this arch,

an imitation of the gates in Paris, to honour Louis XIV. Designed by architect François d’Orbay, a student of Mansart, this Triumphal Arch was built on the location of one of the ancient rampart’s former gates.

Place Royale du PeyrouDesigned by Jean Giral, the Peyrou is divided into two parts: the royal plaza, with a grand statue of Louis XIV on horseback; and the water plaza, dominated at one end by its water tower.

Circuit 4Planchon square on Rue Maguelonenamed after the agronomist who discovered phylloxera and its

cure, and the Byzantine-style Protestant temple.

Grand Rue Jean MoulinMontpellier’s merchant street. Numerous private mansions, including the Bruyas mansion (friend and benefactor of the painter Courbet, who bequeathed his collection of paintings to the Fabre Museum. The resistant Jean Moulin resided at number 21.

Hôtel saint Cômeand its surgery amphitheatre from the 18th century, today home to the Chambre

of Commerce and Industry.

Hôtel des Trésoriers de la BourseFormer property of the Saporta family in the 16th century, this private mansion was renovated by Jean Giral in the 18th century. Today it hosts the House of Heidelberg.

Faculty of MedicineMontpellier wasn’t even 200 years old in 1180 when its Lord Guilhem VIII signed

a surprising edict. He declared that anyone, no matter what his or her religion or origin, had the right to teach medicine in Montpellier. The Faculty of Medicine was founded at the end of the 13th century, and is now the oldest still-active medical school in the Western world.

st Pierre CathedralFormer Benedictine chapel built in 1364, transformed into a cathedral under Pope Urbain V in 1536. Its massive columns and canopy are a must-see.

Tour des Pinsseat of the association of the Barons de Caravètes, the Tour des Pins and the

Tour de la Babote are the last two remaining towers of the urban fortification known as the Commune Clôture.

Couvent of the Ursulines17th century transformed into a women’s prison, then military barracks in the 19th century, this former convent is now home to Agora Dance.

2 tramway lines to get around townThe swallow-covered blue line connects the north of the city to the Odysseum terminus. The new flower-power line extends from east to west. People need just one ticket to ride

these spectacular trams designed by Garouste and Bonetti, both getting around town and riding in a mobile work of art! That’s right, the tramway likes to get dressed up, just like the city!

Port MarianneAt the other end of the river, Port Marianne is one of the city’s more recent urban developments. Easily accessible by tramway or bicycle, visitors particularly enjoy the natural environment and great restaurants. Don’t forget to stop and bask in the sun on the banks of the Jacques Cœur lagoon.

Private mansions and Folies

Bourgeois residences in the city and countrysidestarting in the 17th century, following the reli-gious wars, Montpellier enjoyed an era of luxury thanks to the arrival of royal officers. In 1736, Montpellier became the permanent seat of the Languedoc states. Newfound prosperity began to spread and lead the way for major works.

Private mansionsOver 2 centuries, a large number of private mansions were built in the city, homes that were signs of their owner’s prosperity. «Folies»starting at the end of the 17th century, the city’s dignitaries began to build houses outside the city limits. The term folies originates from the lighthearted approach to these magnificent houses “among the leaves”.

Even if the Montpellier Agglomeration is heading towards modernization in many ways, the locals would never neglect the traditions that have been handed down to them for manycenturies:

Bull “games” and bull-runningMore of an art than a sport, bull-running is a traditional activity that harmlessly glorifies the fighting spirit of the Camargue bull, a natural runner. The raseteurs (runners) try to remove the rasets (pom-poms) attached to the bull’s horns. You will find many village festivities with bull games in the numerous villages around Montpellier.

TambourinThe national sport of the lower Languedoc region, tambourin is a ball game in which the racket is replaced by a tambourine. It is a descendant of long tennis,

evolving over the centuries to reach its present form around 1870, and taking on the name of the instrument used to hit the ball. There are three clubs on the outskirts of Montpellier where you can learn this sport: Cournonsec, also known as the “tambourin village”, Cournonterral, and Pignan.

Les Paillasses de CournonterralUnique in France, a very special carnival game has taken place in Cournonterral every Ash Wednesday since 1346. In that year, Cournon residents held off rivals from their neighbouring village, thus putting an end to a long dispute over gathering firewood. Since that time, Cournonterral residents relive the event every year… the Paillasses (people in straw-caked disguises) chase down their “rivals” with old rags and tissue soaked in wine sediment… everyone gets filthy and has a great time. This is a much-anticipated event for Cournonterral residents… visitors beware!

Water joustingA friendly combat that brings neighbouring coastal towns into a contest in which the losers get soaked! Jousters, also known as the “Knights of the lance” stand on a platform on their boat (rowed by their team), and as two boats pass each other, the jouster, protected only by a shield, uses his lance to push the opponent off the platform and into the water.
