Branch of Armed Forces Established Description
Army
June 3, 1784 The United States Army is the land warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of the eight United States uniformed services and is designated as the Army of the United States in the U.S. Constitution. As the oldest and most senior branch of the U.S. military in order of precedence, the modern United States Army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed to fight the American Revolutionary War (1775 – 1783)—before the United States of America was established as a country. After the Revolutionary War, the Congress of the Confederation created the United States Army to replace the disbanded Continental Army. The United States Army considers itself descended from the Continental Army and considers its institutional inception to be the origin of that armed force in 1775. The United States Army is part of the Department of the Army, which is one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. It is the largest military branch. The mission of the United States Army is to fight and win our nation's wars, by providing prompt, sustained land dominance, across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of conflict, in support of combatant commanders. The branch is the major ground-based offensive and defensive force of the United States.

The United States Army Air Forces was the major land-based aerial warfare service component of the United States Army, and de facto aerial warfare service branch of the United States during and immediately after World War II (1939/41–1945). It was a successor to the previous United States Army Air Corps and is the direct predecessor of the United States Air Force. In 1942, it was divided functionally by executive order into three autonomous forces: the Army Ground Forces, the Services of Supply (which in 1943 became the Army Service Forces), and the Army Air Forces.
Army National Guard
1916 In 1637, the English settlements in North America were a tiny fringe along the Eastern seaboard. As settlement pushed west into the interior, the institution of the militia, which the colonists brought with them from England, went with them. The militia tradition meant citizens organized themselves into military units and were

responsible for their own defense. Organizing the militia into regiments increased its efficiency and responsiveness which proved critical for the defense of their communities. The militia, called the National Guard, has served community, state, and nation for nearly 400 years, and citizen-soldiers have fought in every major American conflict from 1637 to present day operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Much has changed since the “first muster,” but the men and women of the National Guard are still defending their neighbors and their nation.
Army Signal Corps June 21, 1860 The United States Army Signal Corps is a branch of the United States Army that creates and manages communications and information systems for the command and control of combined arms forces. It had an important role in the American Civil War. Over its history, it had the initial responsibility for portfolios and new technologies that were eventually transferred to other United States government entities. Such responsibilities included military intelligence, weather forecasting, and aviation. A visual communications system called aerial telegraphy (or "wigwag") was used. Flags were used for daytime signaling and a torch at night. Wigwag was tested in Civil War combat. The wigwag system, restricted to line-of-sight communications, was waning in the face of the electric telegraph. The electric telegraph, in addition to visual signaling, became a Signal Corps responsibility in 1867. Within 12 years, the corps had constructed and was maintaining and operating some 4,000 miles of telegraph lines along the country's western frontier. In 1870, the Signal Corps established a congressionally mandated national weather service. The weather bureau became part of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1891, while the Signal Corps retained responsibility for military meteorology. In addition to visual signaling, including heliograph, the Signal Corps supplied telephone and telegraph wire lines and cable communications, fostered the use of telephones in combat, employed combat photography, and renewed the use of balloons. The Signal Corps introduced the first wireless telegraph in the Western Hemisphere.
Army Ordnance Corps May 14, 1812 The purpose of the Army Ordnance Corps was to develop, produce, acquire, and support weapons systems, ammunition, missiles, and ground mobility material during peace and war to provide combat power for the United States Army. The Ordnance Branch encompassed all functions related to the life cycle management of its three commodities: tank/automotive materiel, munitions materiel, and missile materiel. It was disbanded in 1962.
Army Quartermaster Corps
June 16, 1775 The United States Army Quartermaster Corps mission is to support the development, production, acquisition, and sustainment of general supply, mortuary affairs, subsistences, petroleum, and water, material, and distribution management during peace and war and to provide combat power to the United States Army. The officer in charge of the branch for doctrine, training, and professional development purposes is the Quartermaster General. The

Quartermaster School (QMS) is a subordinate command of the United States Army's Combined Arms Support Command. QMS trains soldiers, civilians, and members of other services and nations in QM skills and functions. In addition to training, the QMS has command of the 23d Quartermaster Brigade and serves as a proponent on all QM matters. The Quartermaster General does not have command authority over Quartermaster units, but instead commands the United States Army Quartermaster Center and School, located at Fort Lee, near Petersburg, Virginia.
Army WAAC Army WAC
May 15, 1942
July 1, 1943
The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) was established in the United States Army and gave its members an official status and a salary but few of the benefits granted to male soldiers. The WAACs were first trained in three major specialties. The brightest and nimblest were trained as switchboard operators. Next came the mechanics, who had to have a high degree of mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability. The bakers were usually the lowest scoring recruits and were stereotyped as being the least intelligent and able by their fellow WAACs. This was later expanded to dozens of specialties like postal clerk, driver, stenographer, and clerk-typist. WAAC armorers maintained and repaired small arms and heavy weapons that they were not allowed to use. Women’s Army Corps (WAC), a United States Army unit, was created during World War II to enable women to serve in noncombat positions. In July 1943, after thousands of women had enlisted, the United States Army dropped the “auxiliary” designation. From that time on, members of the Women’s Army Corps received full United States Army benefits. The WACS were disbanded in 1978, and all units were integrated with male units.
Marines
June 30, 1834 The United States Marine Corps is responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations with the United States Navy as well as the Army and Air Force. The Marine Corps has been a component of the United States Department of the Navy and works closely with naval forces. It operates installations on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world. Several of the Marines' tactical aviation squadrons, primarily Marine Fighter Attack squadrons, are also embedded in Navy carrier air wings and operate from the aircraft carriers.
Navy
October 13, 1775 The United States Navy traces its roots back to the early days of the American Revolution. The Continental Congress established a naval force, hoping that a small fleet of privateers could attack British commerce and offset British sea power. The history of the United States Navy divides into two major periods: the "Old Navy", a small but respected force of sailing ships that was notable for innovation in the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the "New Navy", the result of a modernization effort that began in the 1880s and made it the largest in the world by 1945. Today, the United States is the world's undisputed naval superpower, with the ability to engage and project power in two simultaneous limited wars along separate fronts.

Naval Reserve Navy WAVES
July 21, 1942 The United States Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve), better known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), was the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. This authorized the U.S. Navy to accept women into the Naval Reserve as commissioned officers and at the enlisted level, effective for the duration of the war plus six months. The purpose of the WAVES was to release officers and men for sea duty and replace them with women in shore establishments. WAVES were disbanded in June 1948.
Air Force September 18, 1947 The 1941 Army Air Forces was re-established as the United States Air Force. It helps to keep the peace and provide unmatched capabilities from the air to support America's national defense needs. It was conceived in World War I and born out of the Army Signal Corps two years after the end of World War II. World War II showed that air power had much more potential than simply supporting ground troops, so the Air Force was established as a separate service.

The United States Space Force (USSF) is the space warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Initially formed as Air Force Space Command on September 1, 1982, the Space Force was established as an independent military. The United States Space Force is organized as a military service branch within the Department of the Air Force. It is the smallest United States armed service within the United States Department of Defense.
Coast Guard
January 28, 1915 The United States Coast Guard was established to be a military service in the Department of the Navy. The Coast Guard is a unique branch of the military responsible for an array of maritime duties, from ensuring safe and lawful commerce to performing rescue missions in severe weather conditions.
SPARS November 23, 1942 The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Women's Reserve, known as SPARS, was the World War II women's branch of the USCG Reserve. This authorized the acceptance of women into the reserve as commissioned officers and at the enlisted level for the duration of the war plus six months. Its purpose was to release officers and men for sea duty and to replace them with women at shore stations. Most officers were general duty officers although some served as communication, supply, and recruiting officers. Most of the enlisted women performed clerical duties, but they also rigged parachutes and drove jeeps. A select few officers and enlisted personnel were assigned to work with the Long Range Aid to Navigation (LORAN) at monitoring stations in the continental United States. LORAN was a top-secret radio navigation system developed for ships at sea and long-range aircraft.
Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
January 4, 1889 The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is an elite team of well-trained, highly qualified public health professionals. The Commissioned Corps serves on the frontlines in the nation's fight against disease and poor health conditions and fills essential public health leadership and service roles within the nation's federal government agencies and programs. Commissioned Corps mission is to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our nation. The Commissioned Corps achieves its mission through rapid and effective response to public health needs, leadership and excellence in public health practices, and advancement of public health science. The Commissioned Corps emergency response teams are trained and equipped to respond to public health crises and national emergencies such as natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or terrorist attacks—both here and overseas.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps, known informally as the NOAA Corps, is a scientific agency overseen by the Department of Commerce. The NOAA Corps is made up of scientifically and technically trained officers. It is one of only two United States uniformed services—the other being the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps—that consists only of commissioned officers with no enlisted or warrant officer ranks. The NOAA Corps primary mission is to monitor oceanic conditions, support major waterways, and monitor atmospheric conditions. The NOAA Corps traces its origins to the establishment of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey Corps. The Coast and Geodetic Survey Corps became the Environmental Science Services Administration Corps (ESSA Corps) which in turn became the NOAA Corps.
AEF Allied Expeditionary Force
December 1943 Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was the headquarters of the Commander of Allied forces in northwest Europe from late 1943 until the end of World War II. United States General Dwight D. Eisenhower was the commander of SHAEF throughout its existence. It was formed at Camp Griffiss, London, England. SHAEF remained in the United Kingdom until sufficient forces were ashore to justify its transfer to France. By December 1944, SHAEF had established itself in the Trianon Palace Hotel in Versailles, France. In February 1945, it moved to Reims. On May 26, 1945, SHAEF moved to Frankfurt. Since 1967, it has been located in Casteau, north of the Belgian city of Mons. SHAEF replaced and absorbed the planning group called the Chief of Staff Supreme Allied Command. During 1944-1945, SHAEF missions were established in liberated nations to represent the Supreme Allied Commander and to maintain contact with these countries without interfering with military operations. These missions were located in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway.
