Roads: General info
HERE maps include all kinds
of existing roads, right
through to pedestrian
walkways and trails.
To be able to prepare correct
routing information for each
of them, it is important to
define the different
road types and to give
detailed information on their
characteristics.
Keep in mind:
The editing zoom level for
roads is 16

Structure of a road
A mapped road is formed by the road segments and
its nodes and shape points.
NodeDiamond shapes at the beginning and end of a segment, if
the roads are connected.
Or big round shapes, if the roads are not connected.
Shape PointRound shapes between the nodes, that are not at the
beginning or end of a segment.
Sub shape PointSmall, dark points on a road.
You’ll find them between two shape points.
If you move a sub shape point to a new position, it turns
into a shape point, and new sub shape points will be
created between it and other shape points.

A primary road that provides a fast connection to
highways, cities and villages.
A secondary road that provides a relatively fast
connection to villages, cities and primary roads.
A street in a neighbourhood that provides access
primarily to houses and apartment buildings, but
also connected to primary and secondary roads.
A track, often with a natural surface, usually used
for walking or cycling.
Road attributes

Give the local name of the road and the language in which the name is given. It’s
possible to add multiple names or road numbers.
Choose the speed range that best describes the average speed of vehicles driving on
this road.
Indicate the permitted direction of travel on a road. Select ‘2-way’ if the traffic can flow
legally in both directions. Otherwise, indicate the correct one-way direction.
Indicate the number of lanes in each direction. In case the number of lanes is different for
each direction, choose the higher number.
• Paved: Choose this if most of the road surface is made of tarmac (asphalt) or other
paving substance.
• Poor surface quality: Choose this if the road surface consists mainly of uneven or
broken pavement.
Define the speed limit according to the driving direction.

Refers to the type of vehicles that are legally permitted to use the road. Click each option
to indicate if access is allowed or not.
Specify the structure type of a road.
• A tunnel is a covered passageway through or under an obstruction.
• A bridge is a structure that allows a road or walkway to pass over another road,
railway, waterway or valley.
• If a road is neither on a bridge nor inside a tunnel, choose ‘open road’.
Choose this if the road is good for cycling.
Refers to the road attributes of the selected road.
Protected roads
To highlight protected roads, click on the lock icon in the bottom right corner. Protected
roads will be highlighted with dark blue.
Keep in mind:
You can ONLY change the non-geometry attributes of a protected road.
Adding, moving or deleting nodes or whole protected roads can break the geocoding of attributes or harm
other complex features. This can create inconsistencies in the road network. Therefore these features are
protected against editing.
• You can change attributes unrelated to the spatial accuracy such as modify info for places located
along the road.
• You can connect new roads, but it’s not possible to change the shape of any protected roads.
• If the geometry of a protected road has changed significantly e.g. due to road works or changes in
course or lanes of the road, please send us a Map Problem report by right-clicking the node to be
changed and selecting Report a map problem option.
© 2017 HERE | Company proprietaryHERE Map Creator | March 24, 2017
A protected road has a more complex geometry which was collected by HERE field experts using special GPS
equipment and other tools to increase geometrical accuracy.

road (if there’s one
nearby) by a routing point,
so that place information
can be used later for
navigation purposes.
If you want to add the correct
position of your private home, add

Tips & tricks: How to detect the editing level
• The editing level refers to the zoom level where you can actually make
changes in the map. For editing roads you need to be in at least zoom
level 16 and for Places in at least zoom level 18.
• Editing level can be seen in the URL after the latitude and longitude:
• You will be able to edit once you see the button change color:
Note: If Places or House Number layers are turned off in the Layers menu,
the respective buttons won‘t be highlighted even on correct editing level.

Tips & Tricks: Roads
• Adding roads
Start by adding the main roads in cities or villages and add residential
roads later. That way, you avoid staggered geocoding and have a
smoother workflow.
• Labeling roads & places
Name roads immediately after you add them.
When road A is joined with road B, the latter will be split into two. So if
road B hasn’t been named yet, you’ll have to name it twice, once for
each road segment or make use of the multiple link selection
• Adding multiple names to roads
To give a road multiple names, select the road and go to the details
panel.
Type in the main road name then choose the language they should be
associated with and type in the alternate names.
© 2017 HERE | Company proprietaryHERE Map Creator | March 24, 2017
Tips & Tricks: Adding bridges & tunnels
• When adding a road that crosses a river with a bridge or passes under another road with a tunnel, be sure to create
a new section for that part of the road.
• To do this add one shape point at the beginning of a tunnel or bridge and another at the end, right-click on the
shape points and use the ‘Divide into 2 road segments’ functionality to make nodes from them.
• Then select the new defined road section and go to the details panel to set the type of road to ‘Bridge’ or ‘Tunnel’.
Also add a name if applicable.
© 2017 HERE | Company proprietaryHERE Map Creator | March 24, 2017
Tips & Tricks: Selecting road segments
• Selecting several road segments, one at time
Hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click on each
segment you want to select.
• Selecting several road segments in a rectangular area
Hold the Shift key and draw a rectangle with your mouse
that contains all the segments you want to select within
its boundaries.
• Selecting several road segments that have the same name
Hold the Alt key and click a road to select like-named
segments that lie within the current map view port
© 2017 HERE | Company proprietaryHERE Map Creator | March 24, 2017
Tips & tricks: Road attributes
• Copying & pasting road attributes
You can copy and paste the details for one road into another by right-
clicking on the first road and selecting ‘Copy details’.
Then right-click on the other road and select ‘Paste details’.
• The multiple link selection can be used to select and change multiple
roads/links at the same time.
Copy/paste copy/paste all attributes in this way
Keep in mind: You can’t change all road names in one step if the roads
have different names
Change their attributes at the same time:
Select the road segments and you can change all their attributes in one
step, such as average speed, total number of lanes, structure type etc. in
the details panel.
© 2017 HERE | Company proprietaryHERE Map Creator | March 24, 2017
Tips & Tricks: Reshaping roads
• Reshaping roads
You can reshape a road to make it better follow the
curve of an actual road by adding more points with the
‘Shape road’ option. Simply right-click on a road and
select ‘Shape road’.
OR
Move a sub shape point to a new position. In that way
a new Shape point will be created.

Tips & Tricks: Identifying roads with no name
• To check whether all roads within your view have been named, select the
‘Roads without Names‘ option from the Highlight bar at the bottom right
corner of the screen.
• Roads without a name are highlighted in blue.
• In most cases trails have no names assigned.

• If you know the name of one of the highlighted
roads, just select it and type in the road name in
the details panel.
Tips & Tricks: Places
• Places are always associated with a named road and an address.
If you want a place you’re adding not to be associated with a road, remove the routing point
(the red line) by right-clicking on the place marker and then selecting ‘Remove routing point’

Tips & Tricks: Map Feedback
• If you want to report a problem with the map or add new
information but can’t do it through a standard edit, you can
use the 'Report a map problem‘ option.
1. Zoom in as close as possible to the location where you want to
report a problem
2. Right-click on the map exactly where you want to add information
