  • CHRISTIANVILLE - March 1989

    Dear Friends,

"If we love one another, God abides in us.." I John 4:12

Love is the real answer to everyone's problems. David was out callingwith a church brother and after inviting a man to services on Sunday, the man replied that he would come but he had no shoes. The churchbrother offered his shoes seeing that the man was sincere. The manaccepted and the church brother walked back to his home two and a halfmiles barefooted. Sunday morning found both men in service...the churchbrother with an old pair of shoes and the happy visitor. Or, who wasreally the happiest? Isn't love a beautiful thing!

1989 has already shown good progress for Christianville. The Eye Clinicroof is finished, plumbing is in (thanks to Otis Palmer from Indianapolis)electrical work in this week with Nick Johnson returning from McDermott,Ohio, and walls are ready for plastering. Another eye team plans to comein late May,

WILL THIS BE OUTREACH 5? A two week evangelistic meeting is in progressat "Brush", a new area where the people have asked us to come and help.Crowds have been good and it looks like an excellent new church spot. Allof our outreaches have developed from requests from people seeking Biblteaching and preaching. Isn't this great!

A recent two-day Youth Retreat had over 200 in attendance. It was a greatgathering here at Christianville, Three more of our older school studentshave become Christians and the total Sunday School attendance for all ofthe Christianville outreaches is well over an average of 1000.

God has blessed us with workers. Dick and Virginia Gibbons from Orlando,FL. are here for 3 months while Sandy is having a furlough. They havereorganized the clinic and repainted.,,2 great jobs. Otis and Jean Palmer, also here for 3 months, have made a great team. This is their 5th trip.It is Gibbons 4th trip. Stuart Kelly continues to be a blessing on thefarm. He has been a hard worker over the past 4 years - good meat and eggshave continued to flow into the school kitchens. And can you guess howblessed we are to have Wayne Black doing a super job at mechanics on allof our vehicles? His wife Judy supervises the school kitchens. They aredoing very well in their first year full time with Christianville.

Sam has enjoyed as well as appreciated the work teams. We are all thankful for them and will miss them when their time is up. How glad we arewhen they keep returning. Now we look forward to" the May and June teams.

THANK YOU. Your beautiful gifts of love, prayers and funds have allbeen so needed...and they are deeply appreciated. God has blessed uswith your help and the progress is truly encouraging. Please take timeto prayerfully read the attached sheet on our work at Cite Soliel.

God bless you all. If you have prayer needs, please feel free to sharethem with us. We will join with your prayers.

    In Christian love,

The fruit of our labor is sweet!

To saythat the convention was a successdoesnotadequately describe ourelation. Theattendance and the spirit that built to theclimactic Saturday evening session, followedby the admonition of Sunday morning'scelebration inworshipand praise is testimonyto the power of God working in the lives ofpeople in Haiti.

All of the Christianville churches werewell represented, including theoutpost stationat Mareshal and the nucleus at Brache. Theconvention opened with a main session onFriday evening followed by workshops duringdaylight hours. Saturday evening, acontemporary Christian music group, "Credo",directed by Gerard Eustache, orchestratedthe special music and the accompaniment. Itwas9:30p.m., and the people had not eaten, yet they werenot ready for the celebration toend. There was standing room only (outside)crowds both Saturday night and Sundaymorning.

Rejoicewithus, not merelylor the successof the convention, but for the greater pictureit represents. Christ'smost fervent prayerwas

for unity. In the final moments before the cross, while in the garden, he prayed for unity;for this,he said, was the measure by which the worldwouldviewChristianity. The churchesare united, and what a testimony to the surroundingneighborhood!

We believe in the fellowship of the believers. We also believe that much can be accomplishedby the fellowship of believers rather than theindependence thereot The motivation producedby this meeting is not easily measured in theindividual congregations, but we can see it bythe refreshed zeal within them. Two to threeweeks after the event, we were still receivingrequests for copies of the supplemental songsheet used for the convention. Again, thisshows the excitement rekindled in the churches.

Our theme, "We All Are One," wasconcluded by the thought from Ephesians 4:6,which was expressed to let God be all in all. Itis only through God that evangelism cansuccessfully influence the livesof individuals tomake the sort of lasting commitment that willnot change as the minister or missionarymoveson to other callings. In the faceof that frustration,we are still trying to build. Continue to pray withus that God will use even our weaknesses tostrengthen His church.

    Convention Workshopsby Jerome Prinston

The convention gathered the people not onlyfor a time of spiritual renewal and fellowship, but also for a time of great learning through the various workshops that were organized.Altogether we had eight workshop sessions, all lead by Christianville staff leaders:

History of the Restoration MovementChristian Doctrine: RegenerationThe History of the Christian Church in HaitiThe Church in Action: Mission and MinistryMinistry and Commitment Counseling with the YouthMinistry and Commitment Counseling with the LadiesMinistry and Commitment Counseling with the MenMinistry Counseling with Active Leaders in the ChurchAll these workshop subjects were prepared and delivered around the convention theme,

"We Are AllOne". The people learned what it isto be a community, and how to preserve lifeandoccasiongrowth in that community. They have experienced the joy and the hope of being partof the community that makes usone withyouand all Christians everywhere under the Lordshipof Jesus Christ.

From a visitor's initial entry into the Port

au Prince airport, to the overcrowded streetsof the city of Port au Prince, and on to theoutlying areas of Haiti's countryside, the needfor benevolent work cries out so loudly that itis undeniable. How can so many people be inneed? How can theybe helped? What programwould benefit a large part of the community?Often, the answers to thcvse questions are foundin providing educationalassistance and physicalaid.

Without question a large dent has beenmade in the area of benevolent work throughthe school program at Christianville. The resultshave been quite evident over the years. But,seen through the Christian's eyes, is this theprimar}' need with which we are to beconcerned? The spiritual indigencc is just asstrongly evident through the rellcciion of theChristian s eyes as the physical wx^uld he toanother. Can a school/educational assistanceprogram contribute towards meeting this basicneed?

Fortunately, Haiti has not ck)sed her doorsto allowing God's Word to be taught in herschools. Prayerisaviialpartof Christianville'sschool day. and G(xi's Word Ls shared regularly.A staff of Christian men and women serve asrole models for the school children. Sptinsorsare a witness to the children of Cjod's lovethrough their kindness and letters.

Just as we have seen a difference in thephysical, intelleclual and emotional welfareof the school children as a result of the school

program, there is an obvious difference in thespiritual realm. After the initial years of teachingand witnessing, many Christianville studentshave become Christians. In Christianville's firstschool, located at the LaSalle location, 46% ofthe students in the three highest classes havebecome Christians and are active in the church.Due to their readingand comprehension skills, coupled with a desire to serve Christ, severalof the 46% are strong growing leaders in thechurch. At the TiCousin school, the mostrecently established after LaSalle, several ofthe older students have given their lives toChrist. The process is continuing. In the pastthree months, four students from LaSalle andseven from Ticousin have been baptized attheir respective churches. As the programconrinues at TiBoucan (Mountain) and Jean-Jean, and the children reach an age and levelof maturity to make a decision, evidence hasshownthat chances are manywill tbllow Christ.

Teaching children in Haiti to read willafford them with opportunities that will last alifetime. Teaching them of Christ and His lovewill provide eachwith anopportunity thatwillendure for eternity. Thankfully, Christianville'sschool program presents the opportunity todo both.

Toward A World View RevolutionbyJ. Jerome Prinston

As part of the holiday festivities, the peopleat the church at TiCousin organized what theycalled a "theater party" where several skits andone to three act plays were performed. Theparty was intended to be entertaining. For me,however, something about the reality that wasportrayed in these plays caught my attentionwith such intensity that I left the party with acertain feeling ofperturbation. What! had seenand heard made me think more resolutely ofwhere the people had come from and wherethey were thus far in their spiritual pilgrimage. Each play contained the most down to earthportrayal of the fearsome reality that was still aninfluential factor in the lives of the people andof the community; a reality characterized by aconflictingdualismof God and the devil, and bythe most morbid controversies involving humanbeings and demons, and other voodoophenomena.

Ironically, such a ruthless portrayal carriedthe tone of a mostserious subscription to comicalentertainment Aseach playended with applauseand over excited screaming of the audience, Iwondered how there could be so muchrejoicingin the midst of such a grim reahty.

Leaving the party, I was frustrated. But inmyfrustrations, I began to realize that we werein the midst of a world view revolution and whatwe had just seen was the residue of the yetstrong reality that has long characterized theexperiences of these people.

A world view revolution in the context ofChristian Education is simplyan emphatic wayto talk of a fundamental change in the existentialbelief system of a deeply religious people suchas the Haitians. In our situation, beliefs that are

contrary to the Christian world view. This changethat I see as a task ol" authentic religious educationdoes not implyachange ofcultural conceptions.Mission educationshould never attempt to takea people out of its culture. However, it shouldseek to promote a profound assimilation of theChristian message, whereby the religion ofChristianity, whileemerging from a new culturalcontext, will remain true to the Bible.

As we pursue this radical change of beliefsystem, we cannot continue to win people forChrist with a simple message of the loveofGod,without a thorough explanation of the existendalsignificance and implications of this love, andwithout seeing that their lives are adequatelyfilled with Christ.

Christianville is making every effort to leadthat world view revolution by continuallyrestructuring and implementing its Christianeducation andevangelism programs tostrengthenthe church of today and to prepare strong layleadership for the church of tomorrow.

Afirst convention held this past Novemberwhich gathered important delegations from allour churchesserved as asolemnopportunity tolaunchthisideaofadynamic churchgrowth andto introduce the different facts of a world viewrevolution. Also, this past semester wehadbegunto develop a Bible curriculum for our highschool students. Despite the closing of highschoolfor lackof funding, we continueto hopethat our efforts will result in the establishmentof a permanent ministry vocation trainingprogram. These past few months many newmembers have been added to the variousChristianville churches by baptism. This hasbrought about the necessity to plan andcoordinate a brand new training program forour new members starting in January, 1990.These are a few examples of strategies for aworld view revolution to bring about stronglydedicated lives to Christ, and for which we arelonging for your prayers and support.

As we face the uncertainties of this newdecade, Christianville invites you to hold onwith it to the hope and blessingsof an authenticChristianChurch and this, to the Gloryof God.

With the coming of the New Year, due to financial difficulties, the decision to restructure thehigh school program at Christianvilie wasdeemed necessary. Now enrolled in three major highschools in the neighboring towns, Christianvilie students are continuing their academic studiesat different locations. Bible and vocational classes (Music,Agriculture, and PhysicalEducation)remain intact, as part of the extra-curricular program in the afternoon. Great appreciation isextended on behalf of the students and Christianvilie administration to the sponsors of the highschoolstudents whohavecontinued their support andenabled the program to continue throughdifficult circumstances.

Christianville Dental ClinicThe Dental clinic has been a beehive. We have already surpassed the amount of activity

experienced in theclinic last year. (With the available care being more regular, it means thatmore candy bars can be consumed. The missionaries here love M&M's, plain orpeanut.) We are thankful for the commitmem to quality care of our visiting dentists and orthodontists.Pray that the clinic will continue to be well staffed throughout the year.

For twoof thoseweeks, Kay wasaccompanied byR.N.CarolynVogal-Santostefano, also an "old faithful" of Christianville. They were still on the jobwhen Dick and Virginia Gibbons joined the task force to continue as Kay and Carolyn returnedhome. Planting Seeds That Will Last A LifetimeA spark of desire and willingness to giveof

one's talent are often all it takes to be sold onserving Christ on a foreign field. Rick and KathyLand, (sent out from Cornerstone ChristianChurch, Brownsburg, Indiana) came to Haitiinitially, on a short term work team. After severalsubsequent trips, they returned this fall to serveat Christianville for 5 1/2 months in the area ofagriculture and helping to manage the missionhome.

Rick is a graduate of Purdue School ofAgriculture, and Kathy has earned her certificatefrom the Purdue Master Garden. Coming with17years farming experience behind them, theirfirst efforts to plant a garden have alreadyproduced food for the table and extra to share.

Although food for the body is important.

Rick and Kathy are primarily concerned withfood for the soul. Through their agriculturalwork, they are strivingto builda closerapportwith the local farmers. Even through the earlystages of learning the Creole language, themessage of Christshines through their constantexample and desire to serve Him. In buildingrelationships through joint efforts towardsbetter crops, the Lands hope to be disciplersand encouragers of Christ to the people.

The team here at Christian\alle has beencomplimented by Rick and Kathy. They areplanting seeds in the soil, as well as in thehearts of the people. Many will look forwardto the harvest that isforthcoming, as a result oftheir willingness to give of themselveswholeheartedly in service to Christ in Haiti.

    Spring Cleaningby Franklin Whyie

In the past six years the fish pond has beenvery usel'ul to the mission. Harvesling twice ayear,we catch thousands of pounds of fish. Wehave been able to feed the children in the schoolsand nutrition program, boosting their proteincontent, and also, helping the communities aroundus.

During the past six years, the river whichrunsnearty the mission compoundhasovtjrflowedits banks on many occasions. In so doing, it hascarried a lot of silt, depositing it in the pond. Thesilt had to be cleaned out. We tried cleaning thepondby manual laborlo helpthelocal economy.

    Before

One-third of the way through, heavy rainsbrought a massive Hood which refilled thepond with more dirt.

We finally decided to resort to mechanicalequipment. God blessed us by providing helpat a fraction of the cost. A construction companyin Port au Prince isdoing the work for only the"out of pocket" expense. The necessaryconstruction is in process, so that in the futurethe silt will be diverted away from the pond.

Many thanks to the Kanzki ConstructionCompany and lo you, for your prayers andcontributions.
