I have now been president of HERIB since December 2005 and have followed the progress of the charity with great interest.

I have seen services introduced and events organised and offered my personal support at Burton Agnes Hall. In my capacity as Lord Lieutenant I have been delighted to promote HERIB on many occasions; most recently with a Royal visit in December 2010 to officially open the new Resource Centre.

HRH The Princess Royal graciously unveiled the plaque to the delight of almost a hundred guests attending on that day.

As each year progresses HERIB faces constant challenges to maintain existing services, expand and introduce new services as the needs of people with sight loss changes.

The Board of Management has changed over the year with new Trustees coming on the Board adding to HERIB’s strengths and ensuring a long and productive future as an independent charity. Mr Eric Harrod has taken on the role of Chairman and he will lead his new team to many great successes.

The commitment of Trustees, staff and volunteers is unwavering and I am heartened to see such dedication.

I am sure there will be more changes and challenges ahead but you have an excellent team to take you forward for many years to come.

It’s that time of the year when the Chairman has to sum up the achievements of HERIB over the past year. This is quite a challenge for me as in common with all but one of your present Trustees, I was not on the Board at the beginning of this year.

You now have a committed and multi talented new team of Trustees some of whom you will already know from their previous involvement in HERIB.

Together we bring fresh ideas, dedication and a new focus to the continued welfare of this wonderful charity. Personally I feel very optimistic about the future of HERIB.

I hope that you the users were largely unaware of these changes, as this would indicate a continuation of the excellent services from which you have benefited over the years. This success rests with our hard working and dedicated staff. The team has recently been strengthened by the addition of Angela Gregory the new Income Generation and Marketing Manager who is looking at a host of new ideas for fund raising and promotion.

The highlight of this year for me and I guess for most of you, was the visit of The Princess Royal just before Christmas to open our new Resource Centre. The whole day was hugely enjoyable and went off smoothly due in no small part to meticulous planning by Sue Pallister and her team. A truly memorable day.

Currently the Trustees are very busy shaping a new Strategic Plan and developing the Website and much else besides, but are always open to any ideas or suggestions that you the members and friends of HERIB may have.

The funding has been withdrawn this year by Hull City Council for our Hospital Support Worker. We will continue to support this valuable service as long as is possible and prudent.

My heartfelt thanks go to our President, my fellow Trustees, the staff and all the volunteers for their continued hard work and enthusiasm. A number of challenges lie ahead including the usual struggle to balance our finances and plan for the possible retirement of senior members of staff. I can assure you that you can rely on the hard work, dedication and good common sense of your Trustees and Staff in the year ahead.

This has once again been a very busy year with many changes and challenges to overcome. The annual review looks back on what we have done in the year 2010 to 2011 so I thought I would look forward to where we are going.

The new Board has reviewed and developed the Strategic Plan Strategic Plan Strategic Plan Strategic Plan and this will be implemented as we move forward into 2011/12.

With recruitment of the Income Generation and Marketing Manager, a stronger emphasis will be on promoting HERIB to the wider community through social media sites such as Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook and Twitter. Twitter. Twitter. Twitter. Work has already started to completely revamp the website website website website and all our literature and documents will be reviewed.

We will be asking people with sight loss how HERIB can help them and looking at our current services and how these can be developed. We will set up Focus Groups Focus Groups Focus Groups Focus Groups to ask those who currently do not access our services, why they don’t and what we can do for them. HERIB needs to explore diverse ways to help more people living in our geographical area. Through personal budgets personal budgets personal budgets personal budgets individuals will have more control over when and where they purchase their help and support and other services they need. We are aware of this and need to plan ahead to be ready.

After four years the NHS has recognised the importance of a Support Worker Support Worker Support Worker Support Worker at the Eye clinic and has created a job to fill that need. We now need to look at other areas where our experience can benefit those with sight loss.

One area we have been aware of for some time is the space available within the HERIB building that could be put to good use by another group with similar aims and objectives to our own.

Over the last year we have spoken to several groups who have shown interest in the premises and as we start the new financial year we have found a newly formed group who fit the bill very well.

There is a lot to look forward to and a lot to do.

It is going to be a very busy but a very exciting time.

Services Services Services Services During the year we have continued to deliver services to around 1900 people with sight loss in Hull and the East Riding of York-shire. In addition we have also given help and support to many more who are not yet registered as sight impaired or severely sight impaired.

Our Hospital Support Worker has proved key to providing immediate help for those newly registered and diagnosed. So much so, the hospital has secured funding through the PCT to provide this role themselves. We hope this will be completed during the

next financial year. Over 700 patients were seen by our Support Worker during the year. All new referrals from the support worker are seen within two weeks by one of the home visiting team.

Our Home Visitors contacted over 3600 people during the year. Some new to HERIB and some who have benefited from the service for many year.

Our Home Visitors, pictured above have a wealth of knowledge and experience and provide a valuable service offering help and information to all with sight loss.

Over 9000 people enjoyed our day groups in both Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Nine groups met each week for a social get together, an opportunity to have a meal followed by activities ranging from a quiz to a clothes party, a trip to the garden centre or a discussion group. The pool table still, proves extremely popular with ‘the lads’ and they made their own way in regularly to make use of the facilities.

The weather in December 2010 did its best to disrupt all

our services but we stayed open when it was safe to do so.

The service was able to help over 720 people in Hull and the East Riding with information and advice at a range of venues from hospitals to supermarkets, libraries to groups of individuals.

Once again HERIB welcomed Students from the University of Lincoln on placement whilst studying for their social work degree. Putting into practice the theory learned in their first year whilst helping HERIB deliver services such as the pantomime for children with sight loss and their families. The students passed their placement with us and successfully completed their degree.

The annual holiday in Scarborough saw 44 people once again have a wonderful week at the Delmont Hotel.

The club celebrated 60 years of riding this year. The Wednesday evening rides are as popular as ever, supported by a mini bus for tired legs on the way home if required.

HERIB continued to manage Beech Holme Court under the new management agreement with Places for People, from April 2010. The funding from Hull City Council towards the support costs for the tenants of the scheme has been reviewed and will be reduced by 10% for 2011/12. This will mean a reduction of hours for the on site Tenant Support Officer.

Two exhibitions were held again in the year: one at Bridlington in 2010 and one in Hull in March 2011. Two good events for those with sight loss to access a host of information and advice all in one place.

Rev John held regular communion services as well as Christmas, Easter and Harvest celebrations. He joined the Board of Management as a Trustee in September 2010.

Income Generation and MarketingIncome Generation and MarketingIncome Generation and MarketingIncome Generation and Marketing Towards the end of 2010-2011 and following the new Trustees initial thoughts, it was decided to recruit an Income Generation and Marketing Manager. Advertising and interview selection was completed by the end of March 2011 with interviews taking place early in April. Angela Gregory was selected and started with HERIB on 18th April 2011. This will give HERIB the opportunity to raise the profile of the charity and to look at new ways to raise much needed income.

Several events have been held since April 2010 under the guidance of Lynne Parkin until November 2010 and then by Ann Massam the Services Coordinator, who has done a sterling job to raise funds and awareness until our new incumbent was in place.

The now annual event of the Ladies Lunch was very popular and held at the Tickton Grange Hotel with guest speaker Valerie Wood who read from her latest novel and talked about researching for her books. Our president Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister was present and said grace for those present.

At the Driffield show in July 2010, Over 100 people stopped by our bus to find out about HERIB and what we could offer. This was the first time HERIB had attended the show and following its success would be booking a place again.

The walk across the Humber Bridge was once more well supported and HERIB raised just over £2000 towards funds.

Several Theatrical Events Theatrical Events Theatrical Events Theatrical Events organised by Barrie Wheatley helped raise funds for HERIB and involved people with sight loss giving their interpretation of the Canterbury Tales. During 2010/11, £124,312.00 was left to HERIB by local people to help us continue offering help and support to people with sight loss in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. This is a substantial amount of money and we are grateful to everyone who has remembered us in their will.

Volunteers are important to HERIB and help us do that bit more for those with sight loss. To recognise this we have introduced the Volunteer of the Month Volunteer of the Month Volunteer of the Month Volunteer of the Month award. Service users and staff vote for their preferred volunteer each month to thank and encourage them for their hard work.

HERIB provided transcription services for local companies, statutory bodies and to individuals. Using our recording studio we have put print onto CD or using the Brailler transcribed print into Braille. Large print was also produced for billing services and other documents.

Treasurer’s Report Treasurer’s Report Treasurer’s Report Treasurer’s Report The financial summary opposite is extracted from the audited accounts for the year ended 31st March 2011, a full version of which is available on request.

Charitable funds have increased in the year by £63,888, this being made up of net resources expended of £38,095 and an increase in the value of HERIB’s investment portfolio of £101,983. The increase in funds in the year, combined with the level of funds brought forward from 2009/2010, give the Charity sufficient funds to be able to continue to provide, for the foreseeable future, the services needed to meet the ever changing requirements of local people with sight loss.

The market value of HERIB’s investment portfolio increased by 4.3% in the year. HERIB’s investments continue to be managed by BNP Paribas Investment Management Limited. Market conditions have again been challenging this year, despite this the Trustees are happy with the performance of the portfolio both in terms of in-come generated and capital growth achieved. I would like to thank Nicholas Darke of BNP Paribas for all his hard work this year.

As has been the case in previous years the results for the year are heavily influenced by Legacies. If we take out the effect of Lega-cies the net resources expended would be £162,407, this com-pares to £258,229 in 2010. Prior to 2010 the Charity consistently operated at a level in the region of £250,000 of net resources ex-pended. The Trustees and Senior Management recognised the fact that this needed to be addressed and have undertaken a signifi-cant reorganisation of the Charity which has resulted in the addi-tional income generated and cost savings seen this year. This has been achieved whilst maintaining the high level of services that HERIB is so proud of.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at HERIB, both paid and voluntary, for their continued hard work and efforts in delivering the services we provide to local people with sight loss. I would also like to thank all those individuals and businesses that have supported HERIB during the year.
