INTRODUCTION
Tourism is one of the growing sectors in today’s economy. People move from one country
to another looking for some outdoor activities which would give them some recreational pleasure.
Tourism can be for many purposes, people may travel for fun, to get some meaningful experiences,
going off shore to attend some events or occasions, to learn about the historical importance of any
place, etc (Salazer, 2013). Tourism with the objective of gaining the knowledge about cultural and
heritage of a country is becoming most popular these days. It has entirely come out with more role
and scope within the sector and creating impact on the industrial participants and management.
This report will picture the importance of culture and heritage management and its role
within the travel and tourism sector. U.K is one of the best destinations when talked in regards to
heritage and culture and it stands fifth in the ranking among top 50 nations. Culture and heritage
tourism is important for this country because of its contribution in development of country’s
economy and is providing 100,000 jobs across the country (Larry, 2001).

TASK 1 UNDERSTAND THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF
HERITAGE AND CULTURAL INDUSTRY WITHIN TRAVEL AND
TOURISM
1.1 Analyze the growth and development of Heritage and Cultural Industry
Culture and heritage tourism mainly encompasses the elements such as living culture,
history and ethical importance of a place. They have contributed towards pride, stability and
economic development in the country (Kennel, 2013). U.K has many places of cultural and
heritage importance such as Stonehenge, roman empire in Germany, Big Ben, London museums,
castles, Buckingham Palace and many more places like that which has made it more important for
the industries and government to jointly contribute towards preserving them and work for their
growth and development.
- Some private and the government bodies have distributed their responsibilities to
resolve some issues relate to a particular place and its development (Offenhauber,
2010).
- The view of developing a particular place has also been taken globally to look out for
opportunities and has brought in more innovations to increase the capacity and assets.

- Proper planning has been done by undertaking formal research and evaluation of the
ways to learn how to be successful and to understand the ways which would lead
towards success (Larry, 2001).
- Various opportunities and market threats have been analyzed and planned to increase
strength and control weaknesses.
- Travel and tourism has also received support from local and regional authorities to
bring plans into action.
A united effort with regional goals has helped in developing cultural and heritage in travel
and tourism industry in UK. It has assisted in expanding assets and capacities to achieve goals
rigorously (Heritage at Risk from Tourism, 2002). From past many years London got the
sponsorship of the most famous sport event i.e. Olympic Games, which has led many people from
all over the world to visit the country. At the time of such events people do look around to take a
visit of the place during their course of stay. Recently one of the grand events of Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee took place during which all the places of historical importance were renovated and
constructed. Such occasion lead to development of places and directly turns out to be a major
factor in growth of travel and tourism industry (Romero, 2011). In last few years many people
visited U.K to be the live audience to the occasions like those of Queens Diamond Jubilee, London
Olympics, Paralympics, Royal Baby, etc which are of historical importance (Kennel, 2013). Not
only the Euro zone but people across the globe came to be the witness to this event. Thus it
segments the people coming for leisure and fun from the people coming with cultural motives.
Thus, all these cultural and heritage importance holding activities have boost up the tourism and
has attracted many people not only from a particular place but from all over the world (Hyde,
2012)
1.2 Discuss Potential Conflicts in Conservation of Heritage and Cultural Resources
In central Jordan, local and private institutions have diverged to meet up the requirement
of understanding heritage values of the country. The difference between local and national heritage
resources are emerging put slowly and will come out with many unknown effects. Challenge of
inclusive participation by all segments of the community is also a major challenge (Romero, 2011).
Steps like organizing town meetings, school involvement, and interpretation of excavated evidence
has helped on fostering the necessary cooperation of various stakeholders and has fairly distributed
the benefits brought by development.

In Northern Ireland, an amazing landscape has emerged as the newest attraction of the
visitors and is getting famous for its unique geology (Kennell and Chaperon, 2013). But companies
are now coming looking to the great potential this place has in the coming future to earn profits.
So they are coming up with the projects to develop hotels, visitor centres, etc. This has caused
severe conflicts between local residents and the developers. So Causeway is preventing this place
from overdevelopment and to enrich it in its natural form.
- Uneven distribution, migration of people from one part to another part of the country,
growing populations has increased the pressure on cultural and heritage properties
(Conlin, 2010). In some parts, technological advancements and industrial setup is at
such a high level as some places being rich in some or the other mineral or natural
resources, that people there are forced to leave the place and migrate to a foreign
location where they could find more employment and living opportunities. Because of
all these commercial intensification, heritage is under pressure. A good conservation
outcome depends upon the early identification of problems and coming out with timely
solutions before the situation gets worsened (Timothy, 2011).
- Economic growth also has multiple effects on the environment especially from those
arising from increased consumption and waste generation. It is one of the major factors

which are responsible in harming the heritage property and cultural beliefs (State of
environment 2011, 2011). World and its people are more inclined towards wealth and
profit generation and they at least think about the consequences of their activities.
People those who are active in the tourism industry are coming out with more and more
ideas towards increasing and attracting tourism but are least bothered about the harm
which they are imposing on architects and heritage of the country. Access of tourism
activity does harm the culture and heritage environment (Nyuapane, 2009).

TASK 2 UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF HERITAGE AND
CULTURAL ATTRACTION WITHIN TRAVEL AND TOURISM SECTOR
2.1 Assess the Purpose of Heritage and Cultural Attractions in Meeting the Needs of Different
Customers
Protecting the cultural and heritage paces and locations is very difficult task. The things
which are in their natural form from thousands of years have to be maintained in the same form
for future because if any technological or scientific modification is brought into the old architects
and buildings, then it will lead to the loss in value of that place or building (Ansson, 2011). People
visiting these places as tourists come so far and spend their time and money to get insight of the
historical values related to that place , but if they do not find what they have come to see, they will

Figure 2: Science Museum, UK
(Source: Kennell and Chaperon, 2013).
The purpose behind maintaining Science museum is to preserve the scientific modifications
and discoveries taking place within the country both in present and those happened in past. One of
the science museums in UK is one in Manchester which is among the mediocre and world class
museums (Hyde, 2012). People are allowed to get engaged with the experiments and can see mind
boggling inventions. The main attractions of these are lie detector, laser harp, building bridges,
robots and many more. In short it preserves the innovations and modern culture It has many vintage
and heritage property stored in there for people to see like first plan’s engine, James Watson’s
model of DNA, etc (Labadi, 2010). So people with their interest in science and technology visit
these places and are these days in major demand because of growing modernization and people’s
interest in technologies of the world.

TASK 3 UNDERSTAND ROLES, RESPONISIBILITIES AND
OWNERSHIP OF ORGANIZATIONS IN HERITAGE AND CULTURAL
INDUSTRY
3.1 Evaluate the Impact of Different Type of Ownership on the Management of Heritage and
Cultural Sites
Looking at the mass revenues earned through travel and tourism and specifically through
cultural and heritage sites, many public as well as the private organizations have jumped into
getting the ownership (Clayton, 2003). Usually the heritage sites remain under the ownership of
governmental and other non profit sectors, but many heritage properties are such which are not
taken as of high value and are still in the hands of private businesses who are least bothered about
preserving their historical importance but are rather concerned about gaining profits from those
(Brennen, 2012). The impact of different ownership can be understood from the following points:
Political – Much safeguard is provided to the heritage properties which are in the
government control. They undertake different projects on regular basis to strengthen the
historic value of the sites (Larry, 2001). They also take expertise from the other countries
experts like those from south-east Europe in connection with project planning and
management.
Institutional – The projects which have run under the institutional levels have also yielded
notable results (Jayawardena, 2003). Like those of monument sites in ‘Kosovo’. The
institutional projects have helped in setting up of the cultural heritage database in Kosovo
and have also gained support form national authorities as well.
Collaboration- At many sites, private and governmental holdings have joined hands
together to improve the cultural and heritage value related to particular place. They have
undertaken many rehabilitation projects which have shown high level of cooperation at all
the stages (Poria, 2001).
There have not only been positive impacts rather have also suffered from negative impacts
from the different types of ownerships. When different organizations are working together, there
is pressure to come up with the similar performance (Creighton, 2007). The competition is
prevailing in this sector as well and even the government agencies are not spare from it. Even if
the government agencies are not willing to take any advantage from it, but constant pressure from
different economic factors and asymmetrical information structure forces them to work to take

advantages (Harrison, 2003). Thus it gives rise to constant conflicts because of the difference in
work plan of every business organization. Private organizations mainly strive to come up with the
modern technology which would help it in revenue generation and also to come up with skilled
development whereas, the government organizations work towards the conservation of heritage
properties.
3.2 Analyze Roles and Responsibilities of Organizations in the Heritage and Cultural Industry
Many organizations are working towards preserving historical monuments and culture in
U.K. one of them is Historic Building and Monument Commission for England, which is a non
government body working to safeguard historical buildings and architectures in London
(Keitumetse, 2006). It is also known as ‘English Heritage’. It has undertaken responsibility of
preserving many archaeological sites and historic submerged landscapes within the English coasts.
It is not only the responsibility of English Heritage alone, but can be understood as responsibility
‘The National Trust’ was also founded in the same field in the year 1894 with the similar
objective of preserving heritage. It was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke
Canon Rawnsley. The purpose of it was to prevent and preserve the beauty and historic buildings
along with preservation of art, pictures, artists and furniture. It has also shown its interest in the

preservation of animal and plant life. This was the basic goal of the organization initially but slowly
it developed its interest in preserving country’s houses and gardens where now most of the tourists
visit. The tourists who come to the country are mainly of foreign location and foreign linguistic
dialects. So to enhance their visit to the country they have been supported by various expert
facilities like providing guides and escorts who are masters and well trained in some or the other
foreign language (Abu, 2012). This will help the tourists in understanding well the history and
other facts associated to a place they are visiting.

TASK 4 UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF METHODS OF
INTERPRETATION WITHIN THE CULTURAL AND HERITAGE
INDUSTRY FOR TOURISTS
4.1 Evaluate Methods and Media used for Interpretation within the Cultural and Heritage
Industry for Tourists
The main motive behind using interpretation is to provide and enrich the visitors with such
an experience which would help them in understanding the significance of the place they are
visiting. Victoria and Albert museum (V & A) has employed various methods which are used to
interpret and enhance their experience can be in the form of art and drama, weaving thematic
stories, signs and labels, tour guides, touch screen KIOSKS, conducting historic events and fairs
(Harrison, 2003). It has helped visitors in learning more and thinking about their experiences. Role
play and drama at Museum in London has become the major form which is not restricted by any
language bars. People from different countries also learn about the culture and heritage by visually
looking at the performances, not completely but partially.

CONCLUSION
Heritage and culture tourism holds a great importance in today’s travel and tourism
industry and has become a major source of revenue (Butler, 2001). As all these heritage and culture
are of historical value and need to be preserved in their natural form. The reason behind the same
is that people come from around the globe to know their historical value, attributes, ethical norms
and cultural dialects. And if they do not find them in their original form, they get de-motivated and
get discouraged to visit the place again in near future (Deacon, 2006). So government and private
organizations which are active in U.K should concentrate on improvising the heritage resources as
it forms the major part of revenues and earnings for the country.
