Iwant to thank you all for your personalfinancial support, as well as the numer-ous leads you have provided us of otherswho wish to join our efforts to build theNational Museum. Hagee, and Congressman JohnMurtha, of Pennsylvania’s 12th District.General Hagee’s remarks were encour-aging and supportive of the Foundation

and the National Museum of the MarineCorps, as well. Congressman Murtha, alongtime and valuable supporter of theMarine Corps, was held up by congres-sional business and could not attend, buthis chief of staff was present to offer afew words and to accept an award onbehalf of the Congressman.

But in an evening of superlatives, thefocus remained on the award winners.Col Raymond A. Hord, Foundation VicePresident for Marketing andDevelopment, presented the awards andkept the pace lively.

The General Wallace M. Greene, Jr.Award is given the author of the preced-ing year’s best Marine Corps-relatednonfiction book. The Award recognizesand honors the memory of the 23dCommandant of the Marine Corps, a fre-quent writer of articles and essays.

The 2004 General Wallace M.Greene Award went to The March Up:Taking Baghdad with The 1st MarineDivision, co-authored by F.J. “Bing”West, and MajGen Ray L. Smith, USMC(Ret). The March Up is an illuminatingand perceptive book. Much more than“embedded reporters,” the authors werevirtual combat participants in the MarineCorps’ fight from Kuwait to the enemycapitol. Mr. West and Gen Smith,Marine combat veterans of other daysand other battlefields, joined I MEFMarines in their fight through theenemy’s heartland, acting as uniquelyknowledgeable and expert observers. They provide a detailed account oftoday’s Marines in combat, showing thaton today’s electronic battlefield it stillcomes down to courage in the face ofenemy fire. The March Up is part first-person account, part classic historicalchronicle, and all riveting combatrecord.

Foundation-Supported InternProgram Again Pays

DividendsSince its inception, the History and

Museums Division's college/summerintern program has continued to flour-ish. This past year was no exception.Funded by the Marine Corps HeritageFoundation, which provides a smallstipend of $50.00 per day, or $6.25 perhour, to defray incidental, lunch, andtransportation expenses, the programconsists of two categories of interns:those who perform their duties for col-lege credit and those who volunteer on

their own, with school recognition givenfor the experience they receive in theinterchange with civilian archivists, curators, historians, and active dutyMarines. In 2004, 11 interns served invarious offices throughout the division.

At Museums Branch at Quantico, interns helped on the reconciliation ofthe images selected for the NationalMuseum of the Marine Corps; helpedprepare small arms for the exhibits in theNational Museum; and assisted with anumber of small uniform projects. Thispast summer, Meghan A. Sullivan, a stu-dent at the University of Kansas,Melissa Barrett, a graduating senior atLongwood, Kimberly Corbett, an enter-ing freshman at The College of Williamand Mary, and Andrew Raisch, an enter-ing plebe at West Point, assisted the reg-ular staff with these duties.

The remaining interns worked along-side staff members at the HistoricalCenter in the Washington Navy Yard.Assigned to the Reference Section,Jennifer A. Colby, a student at KenyonCollege in Ohio, and Stephanie D.Boyer, a student at Mary WashingtonUniversity in Virginia, helped with unitrecords research in preparation forupdating unit lineage and honors certifi-cates, reviewed command chronologiesto identify recent deployments, helpedto identify hundreds of historical photo-graphs and reorganize photographicfiles, and assisted visiting researchers inlocating requested records and files.

Working with the division’s librarianwere Janet Nahrstedt from GeorgeWashington University and ErinMcAdams of Marymount College ofVirginia. The library’s interns assistedwith the ongoing anthology ofOperations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom;compiled bibliographies of holdings onMarines in Central America and China;and prepared the “book notes” section inthe division’s newsletter, Fortitudine.Adam Hill, a high school student inVirginia, compiled a listing of the videosin the library’s collection and workedwith the base newspapers and rare books.

The remaining two interns were

assigned to the division's combat art sec-tion. Meghan J. Rivers, a master’s can-didate in The George WashingtonUniversity museum studies programwrote the script for a pending art exhib-it, co-authored an article for Fortitudine, and assisted with the ongoing inventoryof the art collection. Her inventoryefforts included research, interleaving, digital photography, and data entry. Agraduate of the same program, ElizabethScott assisted with researching of a largeimage project and was instrumental inconducting the art inventory. Her effortsin the inventory centered on databasemanagement, data entry, and digital pho-tography.

While the individual investment inthe program is small, the dividends aregreat. The students not only acquirehands-on experience, but are exposed tothe history of the Corps and the men andwomen who served in it.
