Attempted rapedat stopandgo
JANINE VAN DER RIET
A woman working at the stop and go
system while the roadworks project is
being completed on the R43 Hemel-en-
Aarde Road between Hermanus and
Caledon, was attacked and almost
raped on Sunday morning at around
10:00.
The woman was working alone at the
stop and go station near the farm Spook-
fontein, when she saw a man standing in
the little office stationed next to the stop
and go area.
According to lieutenantFadila Septem-
ber, spokesperson for the Hermanus po-
lice, the man grabbed the woman and
started to tear all her clothes off. He was
about to rape her, when a vehicle stopped
and he ran away.
The womanwas taken to the police sta-
tion and also received trauma counsel-
ling.
The suspect had a cream jacket and
light coloured pants and a cap on.

Woman injured after falling off cliff nearMarineHotel
JANINE VAN DER RIET
Awoman suffered serious injuries includ-
ingmultiple fractures andhead traumaafter
fallingmore than10 moff a cliff nearTheMa-
rine Hotel on Monday afternoon.
The place where she fell is almost exactly
where a German tourist had slipped and fell
from the cliff top in November 2011.
Responding to an emergency call-out
around lunchtime on Monday, Emergency
Medical Rescue (EMR) and Metro Ambu-
lanceServiceswere on thescenequicklyand
found the woman at the bottom of the cliff,
in severe pain.
They stabilised her before carrying her up
the steep incline and transporting her to
Hermanus Provincial Hospital.
She was very confused and wasnt sure
what happened to cause her to fall, said a
paramedic from EMR who assisted at the
scene.
Her confused state could be due to a possi-
ble concussion.
Management at The Marine rushed to the
scene immediately when they heard about
the fall.
They offered blankets to the ambulance
personnel for the victim and also tried to
keep members of the public away from the
cliff while the woman was attended to.
Hennie Niemand, manager of Hermanus
PublicProtection(HPP)saidHPPguardsand
supervisors also ran to the scene when they
saw people gathering around the cliff, just
seconds after the incident occurred, and of-
fered their help.
According to Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson
for the Western Cape Department of Health,
the patient, who cannot be named due to pa-
tient confidentiality protocols, has been
transferred from Hermanus Provincial Hos-
pital to Worcester Hospital a few hours after
the incident.
The patient is in a stable condition and
is being evaluated for possible surgical pro-
cedure and further care, Otto said on
Tuesday.
Desperation drives families to seek shelter with the homeless
KERRY VAN RENSBURG
Familieswithchildrenhavebeenseeking
accommodation at the temporary night
shelter in Hermanus that was set up to
provide thehomelesswith a place to sleep
and a plate of food during the winter.
Les Abbott, chairperson of the Night
Shelter Association, says: In the last
four weeks I have had two couples and
two families with children, who are not
part of the regular group of bergies or
homeless community, looking for shel-
ter.
Abbott says: There is a bigger problem
growing. Other sectors of society are in
need of help. Why are families with two
kids pitching up at the shelter?
He says this trend is possibly as a result
of people losing their jobs, and with no
income can no longer afford to pay their
rent. The recession is biting people hard-
er than we realise.
Abbott says he has spoken to other peo-
ple working closely with people in need,
who say this is the tip of the icebergwhen
it comes to families who were once doing
well, who can no longer make ends meet.
The Hermanus Night Shelter commit-
tee has been in existence for more than
five years, and operates as a sub-commit-
tee of the Poverty Alleviation Forum
The current night shelter for the home-
less is in a converted garage near theHer-
manus clinic, but land has been allocated
opposite the Waste Transfer Station in
Zwelihle so that a new and bigger shelter
can be established.
Abbott says the application for this
land will be considered by council in Au-
gust. He says the situationwith the home-
less isnothisproblem, it is themunicipal-
itys problem.
But we, as the Night Shelter Associa-
tion, have taken on this social problem.

AChinese delegation paid a visit
to the Overstrand last Monday
with the Department of Agricul-
ture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The four day visit included a tour
of three local abalone farms in the
Overstrand, and was organised to
aidandstrengthen international re-
lations.
The delegation included mem-
bers from the Chinese body AQSIQ
(Administration, Quality, Supervi-
sion, Inspection and Quarantine)
that is in charge of regulating any
imports and exports to and from
China. Theywere escorted bymem-
bers from DAFF, as well as the local inspec-
tors fromtheNationalRegulator forCompul-
sory Specifications (NRCS).
According to Marisa Kashorte, from the
intergovernmental and international rela-
tionsoffice for fisheries, thiswasthe firstvis-
it for AQSIQ members to the local abalone
farms.
Weare currently in the process of compil-
ing a memorandum of understanding be-
tween South Africa and the Peoples Repub-
lic of China. This tour was organised to
strengthen the relations between the two
countries
We started onFridaywith discussions re-
garding issues, followedbyavisit to theCSIR
in Cape Town on Saturday.
On Monday the delegates visited the I&J
Abalone Plant in Danger Point, Combined
Abalone Processors and lastly paid a visit to
Abagold.
Thedelegationendedtheirvisitwithdelib-
erations at DAFF head offices in Cape Town
to sign an agreement and to record the find-
ings from their visit.
According toAsandaNjobeni, the director
for sustainable aquaculture management at
DAFF, the visit is a great initiative for all
parties involved.
The abalone industry has welcomed us
with open doors and from our side, all our
expectations were met.
It is notable that Abagold, on the day of
their visit, exported live abalone toChina for
the first time.
Werner Piek, marketing manager at Aba-
gold, said that some of the other farms have
done so in the past, but it was the first for
them.
According toPiek, thevisitwentverywell.
We received feedback that they found our
industry (including the other farms they
paid a visit to) very professional and ad-
vanced.
Every governmental visit, whether from
China or other countries, is always good. It
helps us in building a better picture of how
things work here.
We hope that it will grow future market
access.
According to Piek, South Africa delivers
around 1 300 ton farmgrown abalone per an-
num, most of which is farmed in the Over-
strand. Around 98% of South Africas pro-
duce is exported toAsia. Of this, around 65%
is sent to China, Macau and Hong Kong.

gold, explains their processes to the visiting Chinese
delegation, Dr Yang Binbin, Mo Weiyuan and Lin
Wei, with Lionell Adendorff from DAFF at the back.

Abagolds staff excel at aqua
culture training
Abagold Ltd was the first abalone farm in
the country to invest in ABET (Adult Basic
Education and Training) as the primary
meansof improvingemployeescommunica-
tion and numeracy skills.
This education and training was the foun-
dation for further development of employ-
ees.
Abagold identified the need for aquacul-
ture training through learnerships but no
learningmaterial was available in the aqua-
culture industry in South Africa. Dr Lizeth
Botes, director of Sound Interaxions, agreed
to compile the relevant trainingmaterial for
accreditation with the Agricultural Sector
Education and Training Authority (AgriSE-
TA).
The accredited learningmaterial was pre-
sented to selected Abagold employees as
skills courses over a period of three years.
The learners accumulated a total of 120 cred-
its (1 credit equals 10 hours of notional train-
ing) which qualifies as a full learnership in
animal production. These eightAbagold em-
ployees are the first to obtain this qualifica-
tion in theaquaculture industry inSouthAf-
rica. Abagold is already in the process of
training the next group of employees (23) to
obtain this qualification as well.
TheAnimal ProductionCertificate: Aqua-
culture, laid the foundation for learners to
advance to higher qualifications. Three
learnersalsocompletedanAquaculturePro-
ductionManagement Certificate (NQF level
6) through Stellenbosch University.
The Abagold employees who received their certificates after completing a training course in
Aquaculture are Evan May, Beauty Mgwedane, Christo du Plessis (managing director), Le-
onore Steneveld, Elizabeth Mabuya, Travor Deez, Janodien Swartz, Mynhardt van Dyk
(training manager), Khayalethu Jonga and Franciline Gardiner.
The students who completed a course through
Stellenbosch University are here with Christo
du Plessis (managing director), Khayalethu
Jonga, Monica Xashimba, Thando Xwantini
and Mynhardt van Dyk (training manager).
Jumper dog

HAWS are asking for a clever person to
perhaps come forward with a solution for
dogs who manage to climb high walls and
would be willing to take Letta, perhaps even

Road linkingStanfordandHermanus tobewidened
ELB VAN HEERDEN
The R43 linking Stanford and
Hermanus is due for an upgrade,
but only in a few years time.
According to the head of commu-
nications at the Department of
Transport and Public Works, Al-
Ameen Kafaar, the project is sched-
uled for construction in 2019, de-
pending on fund constraints.
Last year announcements of the
proposed projectwere advertised in
the 29 May 2013 editions of Die Bur-
ger and Cape Times. A notification
letter was distributed and registra-
tion of interested and affected par-
ties (I&APs) was conducted.
Information-sharing meetings
wereheld inStanfordaswell asHer-
manus on 13 June 2013 where con-
cerns could be raised.
Some of the concerns raised in-
cluded safe access roads and right-
turn lanes; pedestrian, cyclist and
animal safety; the privatisation of
serviceroadsaswellasproblemsre-
garding fencing and storm water
drainage. All these issues are ad-
dressed in the final BAR.
The estimated budget for the
project is around R180 million. Ac-
cording to the final BAR, the exist-
ing road has a surfaced width of
6.4 m.Theproposal istoincreasethe
surfaced width by 1 m and include
2 m of surfaced shoulders. The total
surfaced width would be 11.4 m.
TheKlein River Bridgewill be re-
aligned and facilitate a pedestrian
walkway, and will be wide enough
to accommodate horse riders in the
area. Vogelgat Bridge will also see
some improvement.
It is further proposed to create a
traffic circle at the intersection of
the R43 and Queen Victoria Street
in Stanford. A cattle culvert will be
constructed close by onWalshacres
Farm.
A commuter, who uses this
stretch of road on a daily basis, was
extremely concerned that the road
might be closed for an extended pe-
riod, but is happy that the road will
be made safer. There is not a lot of
work in Stanford and many of the
residents commute to Hermanus,
whether in their own vehicles or by
taxi, and delays will be even worse
for commuters travelling between
Hermanus and Gansbaai.
According to Kafaar it is estimat-
ed that the construction to the
18,4 km of road should take about a
year to complete. It is proposed that
two-waytrafficwillbeaccommodat-
edwithbypassesatcertainsections,
with some Stop-Go sections where
necessary.
The design process still has to be
completed to finalise traffic issues,
said Kafaar.
)The final Basic Assessment Re-
port (BAR) closes for comment on
17 July 2014. The documents are
available at www.ccaenvironmen-
tal.co.za or at the Hermanus and
Stanford libraries.

Gabrilskloof embracesa
neweraofwinemaking
Peter-Allan Finlayson has start-
ed as the new winemaker at
GabrilskloofWine Estate in Bot
River.
The move comes as a result of Pe-
ter-Allans own brand, Crystallum
(which focuses mostly on Hemel-
and-Aarde grapes), needing a more
permanent winemaking home. He
will be making his own wines as
well as the Gabrilskloof wines on
the estate.
He is excited about the new chal-
lenge, and looks forward to continu-
ing the tradition of Finlayson fami-
ly winemaking with his wife
Nicolene and her father Bernhard
Heyns,who is theownerofGabrils-
kloof.
This is really an incredible op-
portunity. I look forward to enter-
ing into a new, challenging wine-
makingchapter inmy life.BotRiver
has some of the best soils in the
country and this area, while al-
ready having produced world-class
wines, will only become more re-
nowned, he says.
Bernhard is delighted to have his
son-in-law as the new winemaker
and sees it as an important evolu-
tionary step in Gabrilskloofs
progress.
Apart from the fact that its
sometimes necessary to re-focus
and rethink a business like Gabril-
skloof, its clear to us that Peter-Al-
lan has the necessary flair and pas-
sion to take our wines to the next
level.
Kobie Viljoen has been Gabrils-
kloofs winemaker since 2008. I am
proud to have been associated with
Gabrilskloof and the Heyns family
and grateful for the successes weve
achieved together in the past six
years, says Kobie. Peter-Allan Finlayson

Hester was n aktiewe redenaar op skool en
sy het haar talent van logiese redenasie en de-

van haar lewe kon uitvoer.

Haar laaste woorde aan my verlede Woens-

vanhaar familieweggeruk in n

Diehartseerste is sekerdat sy
di dag van haar dood, tydens
die skoolvakansie, op die pad
was juis om n goeie daad te ver-
rig. Sy het kinders in Villiers-
dorp gaan help met ekstra wis-
kundeklasse.
Ons glo en vertrou dat die fa-
milie wat agterbly deur vrien-
de, familie en geloof deur die
moeilike tyd gedra sal word.
Ander skokkende nuus is dat
n vrou amper op die Hemel-en-
Aarde pad verkrag is toe sy by
die stop-en-wag teken diens ge-
doen het.
En innog n voorval is n vrou
ernstig beseer toe sy van n ho

het.
In Augustus vier ons Vroue-

Scurrilous untruths
deserves apology
One cannot allow the scurrilous un-
truthspennedanonymouslyintheSMS
column under A curious bystander
(HermanusTimes 3 July) regardingMr
Hendriksz and his involvement with
the music entertainment during the
past Whale Festival to pass unchal-
lenged.
To state that ... he (Mr Hendriksz)
secured table reservations at R100 just
to have a view of the tent and hear the
music is nothing short of libellous.
For the record all monies collected
for table reservationswent towards the
purchase of a whale disentanglement
kit.

It was a collective goodwill gesture by
the organisers of the event, Distell, the
Whale Festival committee and Village
Square - of whichMrHendriksz is part
of.
I will be pleasantly surprised if, now
that A curious bystander is aware of
the facts, whether he or she will again
take the time to put pen to paper - this
time in an apology to Mr Hendriksz.

Hermanus Hospital maternity ward is tops
C2 = Caring, Competence;
A = Accountability;
I = Integrity;
R2 = Responsiveness, Respect.
These are the words that you read on the
first banner you see when you are on your
way down the lengthy hallway towards the
maternity ward at the Hermanus Provin-
cial Hospital.
I was expecting our second child, a boy
due on 19 June 2014, according to my latest
sonar.
When the 19th arrived, without our baby
making an appearance, I decided to go and
see the sisters at the maternity ward, seek-
ing their professional opinion.
They kindly seated me down and did all
their observations.
They then asked me what my earliest so-
nardated, andaccording to that oneourboy
was due on 22 June.
They then told me that one should rather
work according to the date of the earliest
sonar and assured me that I can even go
over that date by six days.
If little one hadnt made his appearance
by then, the doctor on duty would have to
decidewhether the birth should be induced
or for me to have a caesarean.
The 22nd came and went: still no baby
boy.
I returned on the 23rd to see the sisters
but their observations said there was still
no sign of the little one making his appear-
ance soon.
I returned four times forobservation, and
every time the sisters showed me a caring
attitude, without the slightest notion of ir-
ritation for this over-exited pregnant lady.
On the 26th, at around midnight, my wa-
ter broke and my husband and I were on
our way to the hospital, this time knowing
for sure something was busy happening
and little Timothy John was duly born on
27 June at 05:50 the morning.
I would just like to thank the sisters at
the maternity ward for the outstanding
service they rendered tome through all the
aches and pains of childbirth.
I was truly treated like royalty every step
of the way, from the time I arrived till the
time I left.
I would also like to thank the doctors for
their professional advice and service when
it came to some of the complications after
the birth they are truly first class!
I would also like to compliment the kitch-
en staff for the superb meals I received at
breakfast, lunchandsupper (not tomention
the soup and bread in between).
Onealwayshasdoubts about aprovincial
health facility, but I can truly say after my
experience, that our Provincial Hospital
(staff and infrastructure) are tops and that
they live up to every aspect of their slogan.
Bravo.

Cynthia, retired to Hermanus in 2001.
But Sonnendecker, who began his medical
studies at Wits at the age of 16 in 1951, did
not come to Hermanus to sit idly and enjoy
the mountains and the sea for the rest of his
days.
Because teaching and learning remain
close to his heart, Sonnendecker spent six
years as an Extraordinary Professor in Ob-

few South Africans have been elected to Fel-

This fellowship recognises and acknowl-
edges Sonnendeckers exceptional contribu-
tion as an excellent teacher, superb clinician,
researcher and outstanding surgeon.
His particular interest was the manage-
ment of women with ovarian cancer, and he
contributed significantly to their treatment
both nationally and internationally.
He enjoys travel, reading, environmental

Maak dus gerus notas om te sien hoe noord-

Die prentjie herhaal hom tot middernag maar
nog is dit nie die einde van die vreemdheid nie,

egter seker is, is dat Hermanus in n spreekwoor-

Onrusrivier sebankiesverfraai
Overstrand-munisipaliteit nie by
uitkom nie.
Dieprojekwaarmeehulle tansbe-
sig is, is om die sowat 14 bankies,
al langsdiekuslyn tot enmetDavies
Pool, op te knap.
Baiemensehet in vroer jare die
bankies aangekoop enkykwelmooi

Tydens n informele samekoms in

die ou en nuwe eienaars gesels oor
dit wat die restaurant spesiaal
maak, en die pad vorentoe.
Soos Rayno Rabie s, die Burgun-

Dit is n goed-geoliede masjien.
Die Burgundy is jou baas, en almal
gee jou raad. Die eienaars is net die

Alhoewel die nuwe eienaars, Wil-
lem en Esthie Steyn, in murg en
been Johannesburgers is, groei hul
wortelvertakkings in Hermanus
sterk.
Benewens die Hermanus Gaste-
huis, wat die Steyns al vir 9 jaar be-
dryf, en n paar bestaande restau-
rante, was hulle ook die mede-eie-
naars van Annie se Kombuis. Di
restaurant is gesluit en die belange
is oorgeskuif na @Food &Wine wat
onlangs in die Carriages-sentrum
geopen het.
Die nadraai van die Steyns se be-

te word.
Dit blyk uit die gesprek dat Bur-

AnneFrankexhibition
The internationalAnneFrank travelling ex-
hibition being hosted in the foyer of the Over-
strand Municipality, was officially opened by
MayorNicoletteBotha-Guthrieon theevening
of 1 July.
The exhibition, which runs until 17 July,
tells the story of Anne Frank against the back-
ground of theHolocaust and the SecondWorld
War.
In her speech, the mayor outlined how thir-
teen-year-old Anne Frank wrote her diary be-
tween 12 June 1942 and 1 August 1944 in the
formof letters addressed to a fictitious charac-
ter named Kitty.
Thediaryreveals theeveryday lifeofJewish
people in hiding and establishes a symbolic
link to the suffering of the Jewish population
during World War II.
Anne Frank a history for today, has trav-
elled all over the world, and is presentedmore
than 300 times per year. The tour is coordinat-
ed by the Anne Frank House, but locally by
the Cape Town Holocaust Centre.
The mayor told guests that the aim of the
exhibition is to informvisitorsabout thehisto-
ry of the Holocaust from the perspective of
Anne and her family.
It also shows visitors that cultural, ethnic,
religious and political differences between
people exist in every society. said Botha-
Guthrie.
Thisexhibitionchallengesvisitors to think
about concepts such as tolerance, mutual re-
spect, humanrights, anopenopportunity soci-
ety and democracy.
Finally, it helps visitors to understand that
asocietywheredifferencesbetweenpeopleare
respected, does not come about by itself. Legis-
lation is of course necessary, but people also
have to make a personal commitment.
Among the guests at the opening of the Anne Frank exhibition were (from left) Robin Lee (His-
tory Society), Unity Mtomile (Enlighten Trust and Junior Town Council manager), Tracey Petersen
(education director at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre), Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, Sonwa-
bile Calata (junior mayor) and Linda Hackner (senior educator at the Cape Town Holocaust
Centre). PHOTO: REN DU PLOOY
Sorry, no gayweddings
JANINE VAN DER RIET
An engaged lesbian couple have been left
very bitter and sad when, according to the
brides-to-be, they were told by an employee
of a Stanford wedding venue sorry, no gay
weddings.
Rocky Medina and her partner, Ericka,
have been dating for seven years and been
engaged for five years and decided to at last
tie the knot.
We saw several venues in the area and
being the typical girls, planning the big day,
we bought two bridal magazines on Tuesday
(17June).WesawvenuesintheWesternCape
andoneof themwasBeloftebos.We loved the
name from the get go!We checked their web-
site and it was a dream come true. Until I
phoned them...
Medina says she phoned thewedding coor-
dinator at Beloftebos, Danica Steyn, on the
same day.
I called and introduced myself. I men-
tioned that we love the wedding venue and
we want to book it for our wedding, a gay
wedding. As soon as I said that, Steyn said
sorry no gay weddings and she put the
phone down. We were shocked.
Weare ina loving lifecommittedrelation-
ship.Weare surroundedby friendsand fami-
lythattrulyloveus,wesharethesamevalues
andhave the sameneeds as anybodyelse and
now. Now we are being treated like we are
sub-humans, like we are doing something so
wrong, Medina said.
After the Hermanus Times asked for com-
ment fromBeloftebosabout the incident,An-
dries de Villiers, owner, said in an email:
I confirm that I am taking advice on the
matter and will not be in a position to com-
ment by your deadline.
On the allegation that Steyn put the phone
downbeforeMedinacouldcontinue tospeak,
De Villiers said it is untrue.

Kearney approached the
two volunteers who had been
involved with the Swallow

their pedestals.
Many residents would not

displayed on the plaque on
the cliff top, adjacent to the

For their involvement in
the project, Kearney thanked
Dr Pierre de Villiers and the

For assisting with the

Graniteplaques recordhistoryofHermanus
Thehistoryandheritageof
Hermanus have been the
focus of a recent Ward 3
project,whichhasresulted
in the addition of granite
plaques inscribedwithhis-
torical details beingplaced
at eight historically signif-
icant sites.
For the past three years the
ward committee of Ward 3
has focused on the towns
tourism attractions and have
therefore spent all their
funds in and around the CBD
area.
Other wards in the Over-
strand Municipality have
spent their ward allocation
on projects in their residen-
tial areas, whereas the Ward
3 committee found it prudent
to upgrade the CBD to attract
and impress tourists and in-
vestors.
Previous projects included
the upgrading of CBD side-
walks, improvements to
SwallowPark, the additionof
two sundials, convenient
parkingatHermanusPieters-
fontein, cliff path mainte-
nance and so forth.
In compiling the 2013/14
budget, theWard3committee
decided to allocate funds to
the History Society, which
has wanted to make the
towns history more visual
and informative.
Discussions owere held be-
tween Angela Heslop from
the History Society and Don
Kearney, the Overstrands
area manager.
TheHistorySociety initial-
ly wanted to print brochures
for distribution to tourists
andhave the stolen brass his-
tory plaques replaced. Kear-
ney, impressed by the design
andmaterialused for thesun-
dials in Swallow Park, sug-
gested using granite slabs in-
stead of the riskier brass or
stainless steel plaques.
He proposed sand-coloured
granite on sandstone-clad
pedestals to depict historic
facts of Hermanus at various
sites. Such pedestals would
complement the stone walls
visible all over town.

passed their FGASA
(Field Guiding Asso-

As soon as these stu-
dents complete their
additional practical
hours they will be able
to guide tourist groups
on their own.
Anchelle Damon, Daveline Phil-
lips, Delano Mauers and Siyavuya
Twala celebrated their achieve-
ment by giving a presentation
about what they have learnt to the
children of Masakhane and Blom-
park, at the Spaces for Sports Cen-
tre in Gansbaai.
The students spend a year at
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
studying FGASA theory and doing
practical fieldwork, which in-
cludes horse grooming, beekeep-
ing, trail guidingand floral safaris.
For Anchelle Damon (27) the
course afforded her the opportuni-
ty to reconnect with her inner
childhood.
My oupa stayed on a farm and
he had a big vegetable garden.
Thatswheremypassionfornature
and things that grow comes from.
The course was interesting. It
was fascinating to see how vegeta-
bles grow in a greenhouse and I es-
pecially loved cultivating cucum-
bers.
And I am totallymad about ani-
mals so learningaboutanimalhus-
bandry was another highlight.
Anchelle, who lives in Stanford,
had just heard she has been ap-
pointed as a project facilitator at
Grootbos.
Theproject Iwill be involved in
is to teach children how to plant
andgrowvegetablesinappleboxes,
what we call green boxes.
We will now be teaching grade
6 learners in the area how to culti-

how they can go about selling the
veggies to their neighbours so they
cangenerate a small income tobuy
home necessities.
Just before their exams, the stu-
dentswere put through their paces
at a challenging two-week training
courserunbyLouisWillemseofAf-

Joining them on this two-week
course were Bongani Mjokweni
and Nashlin Groenewald from
Grootbos Lodge, Eugene Gordon
from Flower Valley, and Jan Rabe
from Fynbos Retreat, all of whom
were also partly sponsored by the
Grootbos Foundation.
Susan Lochner, the head of the
Grootbos Foundations Green Fu-
tures College, is the course admin-
istrator and has been driving the
FGASA mentorships for over four
years.
Previous traineeguides fromthe
Green Futures Field Guide Train-

theGrootbos Lodges aswell as oth-
er eco-tourism ventures through-
out the Western Cape.
The trainee guides with Louis Willemse (second from right), FGASA instructor
from Afritracks, and Susan Lochner (far left), head of the Green Futures College
at Grootbos are Siyavuya Twala, Eugene Gordon, Jan Rabe, Delano Mauers, An-
