HERNESAARI URBAN FURNITURE COMPETITION

COMPETITION AREA:

T Hernesaari is located in the southern coastline of downtown Helsinki, west from Eira and Ullanlinna districts. In other respects the area is bordered by the sea, and a voluminous shipyard zone in the north.

T The area has been formed on the sea since the 1940’s as a result of filling the coastline with soil for the needs of the shipyard industry. Currently the area is utilized by different businesses, industry, harbour facilities, several boating entrepreneurs, a heliport, a cruise ship port and an ice rink.

T Approximately 300.000 tourists pass through the Hernesaari industrial area and the shoreline each summer as they proceed further on to Helsinki city center.

T The path from Hernesaari harbor to the city is in crucial need of urban furniture, useable for taking a break, relaxing, having picnics, enjoying the stunning marine views, exploring maps etc.

T Future development plans for Hernesaari area include residential building, jobs and business-facilities and recreational and tourism services. The area is open for fresh, original and unconventional solutions for urban housing.

T The area is designed to maintain two marinas, the other being a yacht harbour and the other a water sports centre. A trade and activity centre for recreation and boating services is designed to be located in the vicinity of the marinas.

T The cruise ships will get a third berth in addition to the two existing landing stages. A new spot for the heliport is designated to be in a zone built on top of the present water-areas far enough from the residential settlements.

T A park with an area of 5 hectares will be constructed in the eastern shore of Hernesaari. The existing office blocks, granaries and silos are to be preserved.

OBJECTIVE:

J The task is to design urban furniture (5 pieces) suitable to the environment of Hernesaari and applicable for temporary use.

J The work should express high professional standards, serving the extensive tourist flows and focusing on public usability, visual attractiveness, continuity and the urban growth of the area.

J Lifespan of the furniture should be at least 10 years.

J The urban environment of Helsinki is very difficult in terms of durability. The climate type is marine urban climate which means rains, wind and salts brought by the winds. In the urban environment there’s also lots of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, soot, dust and smoke in the air. Urban furniture is also typically placed in uncovered outdoor locations in which case they’re exposed to direct UV-radiation and rain. In these difficult circumstances even high quality furniture needs regular maintenance. To simplify maintenance furniture should have easily replaceable and repairable parts. Maintenance on the spot (cleaning, grinding, painting) should also be made as easy as possible.

J Winning entry will be built during WASTELANDS: XXXII EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS ASSEMBLY in July 2012 as a result of a workshop.

J Furniture should serve multiple purposes: taking a break, relaxing, having picnics, enjoying the stunning marine views, exploring maps etc.

J Participants should also consider the accessibility of the furniture.
