At the end of this year, I will be retiring as Executive Director of The 100 Club. It is difficult to believe that the past 23+ years have gone so fast, but they have been great years. I am blessed that I have had the opportunity to represent our 32,000 members in the many ways we provide support for our Heroes. Friendships have been made with the families of our fallen Heroes, our law enforcement and firefighting friends, The 100 Club Board and staff, as well as many of you who are great supporting members. I hope to continue those many friendships as I move into my retirement. My wife, Maud Ella, and I will continue to live in Houston, which is such a great city. We do plan to travel more and spend time with our six grandchildren. I personally am looking forward to a little more golf, fishing and hunting. We are so very fortunate to have William Skeen taking over as the Club’s third Executive Director. He retired earlier this year as a Regional Commander/Major with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, over all of the Game Wardens in this part of Texas. We have been working together to provide for a successful transition. William’s experience will give him the opportunity to take the Club to the next level, which we all hope will be the continued growth and support of our Heroes in the law enforcement and firefighting professions. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: 1 2 3 3

Hartley - Skeen TransitionThis edition of The Hero will be the final newsletter that I have the opportunity to share news and information about our Club with each of you. At the end of this year, I will be retiring as Executive Director of

The 100 Club. It is difficult to believe that the past 23+ years have gone so fast, but they have been great years. I am blessed that I have had the opportunity to

represent our 32,000 members in the many ways we provide support for our Heroes.

We have been working

together to provide for a successful transition. William’s experience will give him the opportunity to take the Club to the next level, which we all hope will be the

continued growth and support of our Heroes in the law enforcement and firefighting professions.

Many thanks to each of you for your friendship and support.

God Bless The 100 Club.

president’s cornerMy continued thanks to our 32,000 members who provide the

support for the Club’s programs. I would encourage each of you

to spread the word about what we do and to help us increase the

membership of The 100 Club. you are our strongest link to new

members. If each of you only brought in one new member, we

would quickly double the size of our organization and increase the

ability to help those who protect and serve each of us on a daily

basis. Please take a minute and help us grow. A membership

application is included in this newsletter. use it to HElP uS gRoW. If you need membership

materials for larger groups call us at (713) 952-0100.

Sadly, I report to you that we lost Harris County Precinct 3 Assistant Chief Deputy Clint

greenwood on April 3rd of this year. He was shot to death while leaving his vehicle at work.

Houston Fire Captain William “bill” Dowling succumbed to injuries he received in a 5 alarm

fire in 2013 on March 7th. Houston Police officer Steve Perez died in the line of duty during

the flooding from Hurricane Harvey on August 27th and Metro Police officer Elias “Sonny”

Martinez died from injuries after a motorcycle accident on September 17th. your 100 Club

has provided financial support to the dependents of each of these four Heroes.

your board of Directors approves funds for the dependent families of law enforcement

officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty, which includes paying off the debt and

providing funds for children to further their education after they complete high school. I am

pleased to report that our average gift to the dependents of our Heroes killed in the line of

duty is approximately $300,000. of course, all financial support is based on the particular

needs of each family and the amounts vary depending on those needs. your board of

Directors also provides $20,000, for use as needed, to the executor of the estate of a single

Hero killed in the line of duty and do a needs assessment if there is debt remaining after the

estate has been probated.

As I reach the conclusion of my term as President of The 100 Club, I would like to thank all

of our members for their continued support. I know that there are many decisions made by

each of you regarding charitable giving and I sincerely appreciate your giving that supports

our work. I would also like to let you know that your board and staff continues to work hard to

be good stewards of the resources you provide to our 64-year-old Club.

As we approach the Holiday Season, I would ask you to think about giving a 100 Club

membership as a gift. Many members have done this in previous years and your gift of a

100 Club membership helps us to grow.

The 100 Club depends on the generosity of local businesses, like Tewbeleaux’s Sports Bar & Grill. Their team raised $11,000 in the name of Harris County Assistant Chief Constable Clint Greenwood to benefit The 100 Club of Houston. The fundraising event was a huge success within the community, with 5 DPS cruisers, 2 MCSO cruisers, 2 MC Constable Pct. 3 units, 1 South Montgomery County Ladder Truck, 1 Woodlands Fire Depart-ment Pumper truck and an MCHD Ambulance in attendance. We deeply thank them for their generosity and support.Included in the check presentation photo are (from left to right): William Skeen, Executive Director of The 100 Club; Megan Leaumont, Server Manag-er, Tewbeleaux’s Sports Bar & Grill; Chip Jackson, Owner, Tewbeleaux’s Sports Bar & Grill; Mike Jaszkowiak, The Woodlands Firefighter; Sargent Dwayne Finley, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office; Rick Hartley, Executive Director of The 100 Club.May 19, 2017

We extend our deepest gratitude to the employees of Covestro Baytown, who got together and pooled their personal money to make a generous donation in support of The 100 Club. It is these kinds of donations that help The 100 Club to keep financially rescuing the dependents of our fallen heroes. Thank you!Pictured: Covestro employees with William Skeen, Executive Director of The 100 Club and Rick Hartley, Executive Director of The 100 Club.

A big thank you goes out to B.B. Rice Elementary in Conroe ISD, for their generous donation to The 100 Club. The students, parents and staff raised the donation funds through sales of T-shirts for their field day. The students follow “The Rice Way” which includes four character traits including respect. To show respect, the students shared that they love to give back and gathering these donations was one way they could do that for their community. We thank everyone at B.B. Elementary for their generosity!Pictured left to right: Jesse Wallace, Super Blue Signs Owner; Kristie Wallace, 3rd grade teacher; Malinda Stewart, Principal; William Skeen, Executive Director of The 100 Club; Rick Hartley, Executive Director of The 100 Club; Cody Bearden, P.E.
