1 hesapeake Cougar News Dear Chesapeake Parents/Guardians, With a little more than 2 weeks before the holiday break, it is hard to believe we are nearly halfway through the 2016-17 school year. As I reflect back on the year so far, I am thankful to have the opportunity to come to work each day and work with such an amazing faculty, staff, and student body. I would like to thank all of the parents who participated in parent-teacher conferences on October 20 th and December 2 nd . School- wide there was impressive growth in participation over the last year. In total, parents and teachers participated in close to 300 con- ferences over the two days. I believe these meetings will pay positive dividends as we progress through the rest of the 2016-17 school year. Please don’t forget our third and final conference day will take place on March 3, 2017. First marking period came to a close on October 31 st , and I would like to congratulate all of the students who made honor roll for their academic performance. Nearly seven hundred students had the opportunity to enjoy a Bruster’s Ice Cream Social on Novem- ber 16 th . Ninety of those students were named to the principal’s honor roll by earning straight A’s. Each of these students should be proud of the Character, Honor, and Scholarship they have demonstrated thus far. There were two major events that took place recently that put a bright spotlight on the accomplishments our students are doing in and outside of the classroom. On November 12 th the Lady Cougar Field Hockey Team won the 3A State Championship by defeat- ing Westminster High School 3-1. The win avenged a 1-0 loss in the 2015 state semi-finals; and is proof that commitment, hard work, dedication and devotion to the program payoff in the end. In a completely different venue, Senior Emma Bauman delivered a performance of a lifetime on the same day CHS officially turned 40, on December 1 st . Emma received the prestigious honor of “Featured Soloist” during a special performance of the Balti- more Symphony Orchestra. The momentous event featured several other AACPS music students performing in an exclusive side by side concert with the professional musicians of the BSO. The competition for “Featured Soloist” was extremely competitive and we are very proud to share in this accomplishment. In the coming weeks we will embark upon the scheduling process for the 2017-18 school year. Please be on the lookout for infor- mation related to this process and be sure to speak with your child about the courses they wish to take next year. Counselors will assist each student in determining their final schedule beginning in February. In closing, I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the company of family and friends during the holiday season, and that 2017 brings you everything you did not get from 2016. “It was a perfect fall day for field hockey at Washington College to be enjoyed by players and fans alike. Chesapeake-AA won their first ever state title in the Class 3A match-up while Hereford prevailed in Class 2A for a three-peat and their ninth overall crown. In Class 1A, Liberty posted a shutout for their third title and first in 34 years while South River also rolled to a shutout for their fifth crown. At the day's end, the South River Seahawks were also awarded the tournament Sportsmanship Award -- well done ladies!” -MAA

Our Robotics team was invited to Jacobsville Elementary, to put on a demonstra-tion for the Principal’s Honor Roll and Honor Roll students. Caitie Milley, Mad-
die Wheeler, Evan Butler, and Jason Carey talked about the team, the robots, their classes and life to the elementary students. The Jacobsville students had a won-
derful experience, making the Robotics demonstration a success.

P.B.I.S is shor t for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Suppor t and is implemented in elementary, middle and secondary school throughout the United States. From the Tech-Ed Department Chesapeake High School Technology Education Course selection
Introduction to Robotics Engineering
This course will provide the student with an introduction to the area of Robotics Engineering. I is highly recommended for all the Chesapeake Robotics team members. Students that are interest in this course of study should have a strong math background. The students will learn about robotics in our world, and how the different aspects of STEM are all used in the field of robotics. This unit will also provide an introduction to the VEX Robotics Design System, students will get an overview of the different subsystems within the VEX system and how they interact together. Students will then put this knowledge into practice as they follow step-by-step directions to build their first robot.
Engineering Drawing CAD I This course will provide the student with an introduction to the area of Drafting, Design Engineering and CAD. This is accomplished by using the basic techniques of drafting tools, Sketch up and Inventor to produce sketches, draw-ing and design briefs. This course is highly recommended for all students interested in pursuing careers in engineering, design, graphics, Architecture or other fields of study related to various trades. This course can be taken as an ad-vanced technology course and may be applied toward a Technology Education career completer program.
Engineering Drawing CAD II This course is intended to continue the development of the student’s competencies in the “language of engineering.” Topics that will be investigated include: auxiliary representation, intersections & development, threads & fasteners, as-sembly drawing, charts, graphs & diagrams. Although instrument drawing will continue, increased understanding of CAD operations & 3-D printing will be developed. This is an advanced level course for those students that are interested in a technology-based career path such as engineering, architecture, construction supervision, and technical design. Engineering Drawing CAD I is the prerequisite for this course
Manufacturing and Construction Technology This course provides the student with an introduction to Manufacturing and Construction systems. Students will use a wide variety of materials to produce products. Students will manufacture individual products and mass-produce products as a part of a team. A variety of tools, machines and processes will be employed during the manufac-turing process. Students will also participate in line production activities during which students will learn about financing, organizing and managing a production enterprise. This class meets the one credit requirement for an Advanced Tech-nology credit or elective.
Marine Technology This is a course designed to provide the students with an overview of the many aspects of Marine Technology. The students will explore the Marine aspects of Weather, Navigation, Piloting, Boater Safety, Propulsion Systems, Hull Design, Materials and Structures. The students will work using direct hands on approach to Modeling and Experimenta-tion. This course can be taken as an advanced technology credit or as an elective credit
Technology of Flight Technology of Flight provides a course designed to introduce Aviation technology. Emphasis will be placed on
Math and Science as they relate to aviation technology. Students will learn the Physics and Math of Flight and Propul-sion Systems. To achieve these goals the students will experiment by Researching, Designing, Developing, Construct-ing, Flying and Testing Model Aircraft, Hot Air Balloons to get the hands on experience. The course can be taken as an advanced Technology credit or an elective.
Architecture I and II
All students that have a desire to learn the aspects of Construction, Engineering, Residential, and Architecture should take this challenging class. Whether you plan to become an Engineer, Interior designer, Industrial designer or Construction Worker this class is for you. It is highly recommended
Power, Energy and Transportation This course provides the students with a broad experience in the areas of Power, Energy and Transportation
Systems. The students will explore these systems through hands on approach of instruction, design, modeling, trouble-shooting and testing. The major units of study include Electricity, Mechanical Power, Fluid Power, Jet Propulsion, and Alternative Energy systems. This course can be taken as an Advanced Technology credit or elective credit.

School Supply Drive for Students in Cuba Spanish IV student, Thea Kellett, will travel to Cuba with her family over the winter break. She is collecting school supplies to deliver to needy Cuban students. Students may bring new or gently used school supplies, stickers and other small toys to the collection box outside of Senora Bak’s room (287) during the month of December. Thea will personally deliver the items to students when she visits their school later in the month. Last year, Thea and her fami-ly brought supplies to children in Guatemala when they visited the country last year. Thea commented, “I’m excited to use the Spanish I’ve learned in school to help others. It’s a great experience”. The World and Classical Language Department is happy to see students practic-ing their language skills in authentic settings!

SADD’s mission is to empower young people to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them throughout their daily lives. We accomplish this by creating, equipping, and sustaining a network of student-run chapters in schools and communities focused on peer-to-peer education. SADD fosters a sense of belonging and promotes resiliency, leadership, and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions that will carry them throughout life.

Security Information As part of the safety and security procedures supporting your child’s safety, police dogs will be randomly utilized on school property to check the inside
of the building and the parking lot.
Video Camera System Chesapeake High School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the buildings and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083.
Emergency Drills
During each school year, various drills are conducted at every school to ensure that staff and students are prepared in the event of an emergency. These drills include monthly fire/evacuation drills. In addition five drills with scenarios developed by the school system’s Office of School Security and based upon various possible emergency scenarios are done each year. These include, but are not limited to: evacuation for natural gas emergencies; shelter for tornado and earthquake; shelter for outside hazardous materials release; lockout for danger outside of the school building, reverse evacuation back into the school for students and staff outside; and lockdown for a person with a weapon inside of the school. These drills are discussed with staff prior to the drill, evaluated once the drill is complete. In some cases, the drills may be discussed with students be-fore they take place.
Visitors
All visitors to Chesapeake High School must sign in at the Greeters Desk and show Photo ID to get a visitor’s pass before going to any area of the school building or grounds.
The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school will be utilizing a new system
for checking in all visitors. The system is called V Soft by RaptorWare.
When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office. This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the use of your ID, you will not be allowed access to the school. On future visits to a school at which you have previously registered,
you will only be asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming
to school to pick up your child. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is appreciated.
If you are observing a class, please remember this is not the time for a teacher conference. Please make an appointment to discuss your child’s perfor-mance. Guidance can assist you with the appointment. Please park in visitors’ designated spaces. The numbered spaces are for teachers and students.

ELECTRONIC AND AUDIO DEVICES
One ear bud may be worn in the hallways and cafeteria. Music should not be loud enough for another to hear. CHS assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen electronics in our building.
CELL PHONE AND PAGERS Students may not have cell phones or pagers turned on or in sight during the regular school day to receive or communicate messages. If students violate
this policy, the device will be confiscated and turned over to an administrator and returned to a parent. If these items are stolen CHS assumes no re-sponsibility.
OBLIGATIONS Students who failed to return textbooks, school equipment or clear debts have an obligation. Students will not be able to purchase parking permits, Homecoming tickets, or prom tickets until the obligation is cleared. Also graduation guest tickets will not be given to seniors until obligations are cleared. The school business office has information about student obligations and the financial secretary is available between 8:00-2:00 p.m.
SAFETY ISSUES As many of you know, we take the responsibility of your child’s safety very seriously. With this in mind, we would like to review the following school poli-cies: After 7:17 a.m. all individuals arriving at school must enter via the Main Lobby doors. All other exterior doors to the building are locked. All visitors must enter through the Main Entrance and stop at the security booth before going to any area of the school building or grounds. Visitors will be required to wear an ID badge while in the building. If you are picking up your child early from school for medical or dental appointments, you must sign the student out in the Attendance Office. Our school personnel will require a photo identification from anyone who comes to school to pick up your child. While this can be inconvenient, please remember it is ultimately done to protect your child. Please make sure that all persons who have permission to pick up your child are listed on your child’s Emergency Notification card.
Flyers Flyers, as they become available from outside agencies, groups, etc. will be placed on the counter and/or spindle in the main office. Please have students
check for items of interest.

Hello Parents, Teachers and Students and welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. We are excited to begin another sensational year here at
Chesapeake High School and we are grateful for your continued support. The purpose of our Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is to
support the faculty, parents and most of all our students during their academic year here at Chesapeake High School and we need your help to
accomplish our goals.
Traditionally the PTSA has maintained the distinction of being the strongest voice for our students and teachers. We understand and appreciate
this responsibility. We are a small group of caring parents who work throughout the school year to support our driver’s education classes pro-
vided by Elite Driving School, our student lunch program and our annual scholarship program, just to name a few and we can do more with
your help.
Your support and involvement in the Chesapeake High School PTSA will ensure you are informed and engaged in your child’s education. For a
very small annual cost you have an opportunity to be a member of an organization whose primary purpose is to make every child’s potential a
reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for our children. We promise you the rewards far outweigh the one-

SAT Prep Classes
The PTSA is again working with "The Answer” to make available convenient and informative one-day SAT Prep classes during the 2016 -2017
academic year. The dates, locations, and costs will be disseminated to CHS students in mid-September 2016.
Reflections Arts Program
The PTSA will sponsor the National PTA Reflections Arts Program at Chesapeake High School during 2016-2017 school year. The Reflections
Program encourages students to explore their talents and express their ideas on a specific theme in any of six artistic forms: dance choreogra-
phy, film productions, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts. The theme for this year’s program is “What is your story?”
Specific rules and requirements will be available in mid-September 2016.
Driver’s Education
The PTSA is pleased to announce that ELITE Driving School will be conducting two classes during the fall semester. The dates and cost asso-

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is seeking registered nurses to provide health services for students in Anne Arundel County Public Schools for the second semester of this school year as well as for the 2016-17 school year. PARENT LEADERSHIP GROUP NEEDED! Parent involvement is KEY to having a successful class! WE will need a group of 10-15 parents that are willing to be involved in class activities, fundraisers, ticket sales, after prom party, and collection of dues throughout the course of the next four years.
