PRESTWICHIs a populous village and township in the parish of Prestwich-cum- Oldham, 4 miles N.W. from Manchester, and 5 S.S.E. from Bury. It contains a great number of genteel residences, principally occupied by Manchester merchants. Heaton Park, the fine seat of the Earl of Wilton, is in the parish. The area of the township is 1,906 acres ; and its population in 1871, was 6,820; and in 1881, 8,627. The rateable value is £39,735. The affairs of the township are managed by a Local Board, formed in 1867, and which consists of twelve members. The office of the Board is in Bury New Road. Gas is supplied by the Radcliffe and Pilkington Gas Co.; and a plentiful supply of water is procured from the Bury Waterworks.

The ancient church of St. Mary is a fine gothic structure, dating from the thirteenth century. It was restored in 1860, and now again several alterations are being effected in the interior; these include the restoration of the roof of nave, chancel and'aisles, and the erection of organ chamber at the east end. The tower, which contains a peal of six bells, has also undergone some repairs. The vault of the Wilton family is in the north aisle of the church. There are 1,200 sittings, of-which 550 are free. The benefice is a rectory of the annual value of £1,500 in the patronage of the Earl of Wilton, and held by the Rev. H. M. Birch, B.D. St. Margaret's Church, Rooden Lane,, erected in 1851, serves as a chapel-of-ease to St. Mary's Parish Church. A new chancel was recently added and other alterations made at the expense of the late Lord Wilton, who was a great bene factor to the church. Rev. Stanley Swinburne, curate in charge. The Wesleyan Methodists have chapels in Bury New Road, Rooden Lane, and Rainsough. The Congregational Church, Rooden Lane, is a good gothic building of brick, with stone dressings, erected in 1881 at a cost, including site, of about £5,000. It will seat 500 persons, and the Rov. Griffith D. Hughes is pastor.

The County Lunatic Axylum was opened 1st January, $851, and it stands in an area of 136a. 3r. 29p. When the asylum was first opened, it was designed to accommodate 500 patients, but it has been found necessary to enlarge from time to time. An annexe, just completed, affords accommodation for 840 additional patients, and the total accommodation now is for over 2,000. H. Booke Lay, Esq., is superintendent.

The inhabitants have great facilities for study anil recreation at the various clubs and reading rooms in the neighbourhood. The Prestwich Library and Reading Room, and those of St. Margaret's and Rooden Lane, are well attended. The Conservative Club, Church Lane, was established in 1880, and the Liberal Club, Bury New Road, in 1878. At Rainsough, is a Working Men's Club. A Parlia mentary Debating Society holds its meetings during the session, alternately at the Liberal and Conservative Clubs. The Cemetery for the Jews is situated adjacent to the village ; it was presented by S. L. Behrens, Esq. At Prestwich Hills is a reservoir belonging to the Manchester Corporation, constructed in 1867. The principal owners of the land in Prestwich are the Earl of Wilton, the Drink- water Trustees, Lady Dashwood, William Gardner, Esq., and the Rector of Prestwich.

Prestwich and Heaton Park stations

RAMSBOTTOM.Ramsbottom is a manufacturing town, situated mostly in the town

ship of Tottington Lower End, parish of Bury, Hundred of Salford, diocese of Manchester, and in the electoral division of South East Lancashire. The population in 1881 was 5,242. It is a station on the East Lancashire section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, 4 miles N. from Bury, 13^- N. from Manchester, 8 from Bacup, 8 from Accrington, and 7 by road from Bolton. Seated on the river Irwell, it has a plentiful supply of water, which, with the establish ment of railway communication, has contributed largely to the ad vancement of the place in commercial importance. Cotton spinning and manufacturing is carried on here very extensively ; there are also- calico printing and bleaching works, woollen mills, paper mills, iron and brass foundries, &c. The Messrs. Ashton first introduced the-

cotton trade into the neighbourhood at the commencement of the present century, and Sir Robert Peel, the first baronet, established the business of calico printing here, and his extensive works were for many years carried on by his successors, the eminent firm of William Grant and Brothers. The premises once occupied by Mr. Yates, of the firm of Peel, Yates and Co., were converted into the commodious Inn. now called Grant's Arms, by William Grant, Esq., who was a munificent patron of the place, and whose large print works are DOW used for bleaching and finishing purposes.

The town is governed by a Local Board, formed in 1864. It con sists of 12 members, whose meetings are held in the board room, Garden Street. The district comprises Rainsbottom, Edenfield, Shuttle-worth, Summerseat, Holcombe Brook, Stubbins, and Chatter- ton, and is divided into four wards, viz., North, East, West, and Central Wards. Henry Heys, Esq., is chairman of the Board, and Mr. William H. Belshaw, clerk. The streets are lighted by 120 public lamps. The Gasworks are situated at Stubbins, and were established in 1854. They consist of four holders, with a capacity of 520,000 cubic feet of gas, which is sold to consumers from 3s. to 3s. lid. per 1,000 cubic feet, according to the quantity consumed. The capital is now £54,216. Mr. Christopher West is manager, and Mr. Francis Barrett, secretary. The inhabitants are supplied with water from the works at Bury. The Cemetery, situate at Hazlehurst, was opened for interment in 1875. It contains eight acres, purchased for about £1,600, and there is a division each for the Church of England, the Nonconformists, and the Catholics. As yet, there are no mortuary chapels, and the burial service is conducted in the Registrar's house.

St. Paul's Church is an elegant stone building in the early English style of architecture, erected in 1850 from a design by Mr. I. Holden, at a cost of £3,500, the site aud £1,387 towards its erection being given by the Messrs. Ashton. The church was enlarged in 1866 at a cost of about £1,000. It contains 783 sittings, the whole of which are free. The benefice is a vicarage of the annual value of £300, in the patronage of the Crown and the Bishop of Manchester alternately, and held by the Rev. William Henry Corbould (surrogate). The population of the parish in 1881 was 4,286. The schools attached to this church were much enlarged in 1868, and will accommodate 700 children. St. Andrew's Church is a handsome Gothic edifice, with a tower surmounted by pinnacles, and the interior is beautifully decorated. It was built as a Presbyterian place of worship by Wm.. Grant, Esq., in 1832-4, but was transferred to the Church of Eng land, and consecrated in 1875. It contains 350 sittings, all of which are free. The living is a vicarage of the annual value of £200, in the patronage of Mrs. Isabella Lawson, and held by the Rev. Henry William Jones. Population of the parish in 1881, 956 souls. Service is held in Nuttall School, on Sundays, conducted by the Rev.
