THE VOICE OF

CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM

CHESHVAN - KISLEV 5752

The "missing tile syndrome" is what Dennis Prager, a gifted Jewish writer and lecturer, refers to as ''one of human nature's most creative, and effective, ways of sabotaging happiness.'' It is the tendency to affix one's attention on what is missing rather than on what is there. The example that he uses is a tiled ceiling with one tile missing. The person who stares at the flaw, overlooking the whole, suffers from the "missing tile syndrome". He goes on to argue that since in life there will always be imperfections there is great merit in concentrating on the rest of the ceiling, so that your vision will not be centered on that which is missing. We are guilty of that 'missing tile syndrome' in many aspects of our lives.

The Missing Tile A Vizkor Message

We focus on what we do not have - we compare our lack of fortune or luck with someone we perceive as more fortunate than we are. Remember what Dennis Prager said were the sage philosophic words of his friend's mother, Mrs. Telushkin, "The only happy people I know are people I don't know very well." President's Message

Your input, and support, are needed at the semi-annual general meeting of the congregation, which will be held Wednesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. Among the agenda items for this evening will be the presentation of the budget for the coming year.

It is virtually certain that a recommendation for another assessment and/or dues increase will accompany the budget. The special assessment of $50 per year ends with this year- a loss of $25,000 in revenue! There has not been a dues increase for more than two years.

After a slow start, enrollment in our religious school programs has clin:ibd to pproximately 180 youngsters; this figure includes the more than 16 teenagers who will be participating in the exciting, new high school seminar. The congregation subsidizes the school's budget.

Our youth program is reaching out with plans for interesting activities. Junior congregation is well organized. Adult study groups are being organized. We knew that in hiring a staff person to serve as coordinator for youth, education and family activities, we would need to provide for not only salary, but for materials and supplies and publicity to promote the very well-planned events this individual would be developing.

Congregation Beth Shalom's J.E.F.F. program remains one of the most viable. Our Cultural Commission has planned an exciting series of events over the coming months. A new Social Action Committee promises other activities.

The chairmen and individuals responsible for all of these areas were asked over the summer to plan for the coming year before submitting their budget requests. These have been reviewed and pruned by the Budget Committee. Various economies have been devised, but the bottom line remains a need for major new sources of revenue to cover not only capital needs, but the operation of the synagogue itself.

Building maintenance is a prime concern. Without any thought of completing the renovation project - and the third and final phase, renovation of the Founders Hall and Reception Area, would be the most costly -we face the continuing concerns of operating within an aging building.

The problems are not new - but the solution for the coming year is dependent upon your support. I look forward to seeing you at the general meeting!

''Operation Promised Land'' Congregation Beth Shalom is participat

ing in ''Operation Promised Land," he special campaign launched by the ew1h National Fund to prepare home sites 1n Israel.

The Board of Directors at a recent meeting voted to sponsor one housing site, at a cost of $5,000, by urgin!;J members to participate in the special drive through the purchase of trees.

The campaign is co_sponsored by the United Synagogue of America, the association of Conservative congregations, and is in response to the influx of Soviet immigrants and the airlift of 14,000 Ethiopian Jews. Homes, schools, hospitals and businesses will be built on land that has been prepared by the Jewish National Fund.

''Thousands of Soviet immigrants continue to arrive in Israel," commented Alan J. Tichnor, president of United Synagogue of America and Joseph Hess, chairman of Jewish National Fund for United Synagogue.'' Day after day they come. One of the most immediate needs is of course housing. It is in this vital area that the Keren Kayemeth Le'lsrael - Jewish National Fund has been mandated by the government to prepare the land and necessary infrastructure for those urgently needed homes. Working at 5_5 locations throughout the country, the JNF 1s developing the sites for 70,000 housing units. This massive undertaking has resulted in a supplementary KKL budget exceeding 100 million dollars beyond its ongoing responsibilities. The manpower and the resources of the KKL are thus being stretched beyond any heretofore imaginable limits.'' Call the Jewish National Fund office at 557-6644 and mention Congregation Beth Shalom when making your commitment.

Mazon Report October 2, 1991 the Mazon Council of

Greater Metropolitan Detroit met at the "LIGHTHOUSE OF OAKLAND COUNTY".

Milton Gorelick, Faith Tam and myself comprise the Beth Shalom committee.

The "Lighthouse" is a place for the homeless and the hungry of Oakland County. The main purpose of the "Lighthouse" is to help the homeless and the hungry learn how to help themselves.

The CARE-GIVERS of the Lighthouse program has been given a small grant from Mazon to furnish fresh fruit and vegetables to the disabled and homebound senior citizens during the months of November through April. There are 60 recipients of the Care-Givers program. This program not only provides fresh fruit and vegetables twice a month, but the volunteers who deliver the food also take this opportunity to make sure the seniors home environment is in good running condition.

Some of the things needed are personal items, because these things are not covered by the Food Stamp program, nor does Lighthouse provide dollars for such items. Needed are toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, and paper goods such as diapers, sanitary napkins, tissue, toilet paper, etc. If you have little samples from some of your travels they would be greatly appreciated. If you know a Doctor, Dentist or Pharmacist who would like to contribute some of these items, please let us know.

I will arrange a drop off place in the Synagogue office for all small items, if you have larger items please call us and we will pick them up and see they get delivered to the "Lighthouse".

miracle of Judah Maccabee's small army over the Syrians and the miracle of the small cruse of oil whose contents lasted for eight nights in lighting the ancient Temple's menorah.

Basic to the observance of Chanukah is the lighting of the Chanukah candles. The "Shammes" candle is not counted as a candle. It is only used in lighting the other candles. The individual candles are put in place starting with the right-hand side of the Menorah. The Shammes is lit first. Then the candles are lighted from left to right, i.e., the last one placed in the Menorah is the first to be lit. One on the first evening, two on the second; until the eighth night of Chanukah eight candles are lit. The Chanukah lights must burn for at least half an hour each night. On Friday eve, the Chanukah lights are kindled before the Sabbath lights. Before kindling the lights, hold the lighted Shammes in your hand and pronounce the following blessings:

The Third Night

As we kindle the third light, we re-pledge our loyalty to Eretz Yisrael. We will make every effort to helpour brethren who reside in our Holy Land.

The Fourth Night

As we kindle the fourth light, we dedicate ourselves to maintaining our full identity with the American Jewish community, accepting the fact of democracy in Jewish life.

On September 26, 1991, Men's Club members gathered together in the Founders' Hall to enjoy spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, and ice cream with Joe Forbes, former Michigan House Majority Leader, State Representative, and Mayor of Oak Park. Mr. Forbes related his 30 years of political experience to the current activities of the Michigan state government.

The winner of the Men's Club Ninth Super Raffle for two 1991-1992 Regular Seasons Tickets for center court seats to cheer the Detroit Pistons playing championship basketball at The Palace of Auburn Hills was Jan Richter of Whitmore Lake. The second prize of $100 was LeAnn Cohen of Sterling Heights. Paul Levine will receive $100 for selling the winning ticket. Again, Jerry Efros will receive $100 for selling the most tickets. The funds raised will support Men's Club programs benefitting Congregation Beth Shalom. Should the Pistons appear to make the playoffs, Men's Club will try to raffle off the playoff tickets.

By now, all men of the Beth Shalom should have received their first 1991-1992 membership dues request in the mail. If you have not, please contact Eli Anders, Mem· bership Vice President, 967·0543. Your dues support the programs benefitting the Congregation.

On Simhat Torah, Key Club sponsored a lunch for the congregation after services.

Appreciation to Sharon and Eli Anders, Ricki Herling, Joy Landau, Morris Lazarus, Sha· ran and Paul Levine, and Ellen and Richard Racusin for preparing and serving the cholent lunch. Hot dogs were available for those who have not learned to appreciate cholent.
