What is VOIP?

“VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), sometimes referred to as Internet telephony, is a method ofdigitizing voice, encapsulating the digitized voice into packets and transmitting those packets over apacket switched IP network.”

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also referred to as IP Telephony or Internet Tele-phony. It is another way of making phone calls, with the difference of making the calls cheaper orcompletely free. The ‘phone’ part is not always present anymore, as you can communicate withouta telephone set.

Types of VOIP technology

VoIP is a remarkable offering under the banner of internet protocol. It offers a communication solu-tion not just for the businesses but it is also beneficial as a home phone service. It has resolved allthe issues that people once used to have while using the traditional phone service. VoIP serviceproviders promise and ensure premium quality services not just to the home phone service users butalso to the business users. In fact, VoIP serves the business by providing the business users withthree remarkable options which are:

1. House VoIP2. Hosted VoIP3. Hybrid VoIP

House system is basically for large businesses, companies and corporations which have higherneeds of effective communication systems all the time. It is the most expensive VoIP system so farand it may not be affordable as well as feasible for many. On the other hand, host VoIP is made formoderate businesses and medium sized companies which have plans to open up branches in differ-ent geographic locations and do not want to take lease on telephone equipment in near future.Thirdly, Hybrid VoIP system is very interesting as it is for all those companies and business whichdo not want to leave their traditional telephone system yet at the same time avail the benefits andservices of VoIP.

House VoIP:

The big companies and businesses always go for this option because of different benefits associatedwith it. Firstly, it looks almost similar to the normal telephone which is given to each of the em-ployee on his/her work table in the company. Secondly, PBX (private branch exchange) equipmentwill be just located in some part of the office from where all the telephones would be connected totransmit the data. The business owners of the company have the access to IP PBX and they are the

ones who can regulate it only. So, in this way if we look at it carefully, we see that once a companyopts for House VoIP, its business owners become the service providers to all the branches and em-ployees of the company in some way as they are the ones sitting at a place and controlling every-thing.

Hosted VoIP:

It is popularly known as “pay-as-you-go” because it works on the hiring system. A company doesnot own an IP PBX but it is still able to use many services of the VoIP. Mostly, the companieswhich are unable to evaluate their future needs opt for hosted VoIP as it provides flexible optionsfor these companies. It is a bit costly when it is acquired as the equipment is not installed within thecompany but it is beneficial in its own ways for the companies who do not want to have HouseVoIP. Furthermore, a monthly fee is charged by the service providers of Hosted VoIP. This fee isactually a license fee for the number of telephones a company is using and how much the overallusage of VoIP is for the company.

Hybrid VoIP:

A hybrid telephone system combines traditional telephone systems with newer voiceover Internet protocol (VOIP) technology. These systems allow users to make and receive somecalls over traditional local telephone lines but route other calls over the Internet to take advantage ofthe numerous features available in VOIP systems.

Control Module1. Hybrid telephone systems, according to system manufacturer Estech Systems Incorporated,

use a central control module to allow configuration of the system functionality. When callsarrive over traditional telephone lines, the control module handles the incoming call accord-ing to instructions in a configuration file that the system administrator builds. When usersmake a telephone call, the control module determines the path that the call will take and thetechnology it will use.

Function2. In a typical configuration, the system administrator might instruct the system to use tradi-

tional telephone lines for free local calls but route more expensive, long-distance and inter-national calls across cheaper VOIP circuits. When the call connects over traditional lines, the system converts user speech to electrical signals suitable for transmission across analogcircuits. For VOIP connections, the control module uses special software to convert voicesinto Internet protocol- (IP) compatible data packets ready for sending across the Internet.

Features3. Hybrid telephone systems offer a number of features that vary from system to system. Ac-

cording to retailer Smart Home USA, common features include integrated voice mail, inter-

Page 5: HFU Furtwangenheindl/ebte-2010ws-Term...3 What is VOIP? ˝VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), sometimes referred to as Internet telephony, is a method of digitizing voice, encapsulating

5

com functionality, music on hold, caller identification, call forwarding and call transfer abil-ities. System administrators can also use system software to activate advanced VOIP func-tionality that defines call routes, allows connection of remote extensions, maintains systemrecords and enables advanced voice mail services like remote notification and text messagealerts.

Benefits4. A primary benefit of hybrid telephone systems lies in its ability to route long distance and

international calls across the Internet rather than through the traditional telephone network.By using VOIP technology to bypass long distance carriers, these systems can save users asignificant amount of money. In addition, hybrid phone systems increase productivity by al-lowing transfer of calls between extensions both in the office and at remote locations. Soft-ware also allows for easier system administration when compared to traditional phone sys-tems.

Considerations5. Though hybrid telephone systems offer a number of benefits, they do carry some important

considerations. Users accustomed to the very high uptime percentages of traditional tele-phone lines may find the unregulated nature of VOIP connections somewhat less reliable, and Internet congestion can impact the quality of voice conversations. In addition, hybridtelephone systems require a dedicated broadband Internet connection, and this service canrepresent an added expense when compared to more traditional systems.

Types of VOIP system

There are two major types of VoIP systems.

1- Soft phone2- Hard phone

Soft PhoneA "soft phone" is merely a piece of software that runs on your PC. You communicate through a

microphone attached to your computer, and listen through headphones or computer speakers.

Hard PhoneThe other type of VoIP is more like what you're used to when you make a call. You can use a stan-dard telephone, or a special phone called an IP phone. Either one is hooked up to your broadbandconnection. You don't even have to have a computer to take advantage of this service.

There are several different soft phones available, many of which are offered as freeware. In general, the freeware versions allow you to talk only with other people who have the same software on theircomputers. Instead of connecting through a regular phone number, you select who you want to talk

Page 6: HFU Furtwangenheindl/ebte-2010ws-Term...3 What is VOIP? ˝VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), sometimes referred to as Internet telephony, is a method of digitizing voice, encapsulating

6

to from a drop-down list on your computer screen, or enter in the IP number of their computer. Youwill still need a broadband connection, even if you choose to only use a freeware soft phone. Al-though it is possible to talk using a dial-up connection, the voice connection will be very poor quali-ty, with a choppy tone and significant distortion. Some soft phones offer the ability to call other re-cipients on their regular phones, although this is a fee-based system and you pay by the minute. Ifyou are using a soft phone with your computer, you will get better call quality by using a specialVoIP headset instead of relying on your computer's speakers and microphone. The PC-based soft phone is quite easy to use, and installation is much simpler since you don't needto add any extra hardware. The interface is quite simple, and in most cases, looks just like a tele-phone keypad on your computer screen. In a corporate environment, you can have a VoIP system for your entire office. Many VoIP carriersare targeting small offices with plans that offer multiple extensions; larger offices may easily dep-loy an IP PBX. Some carriers offer hosted IP PBX solutions with some excellent features that eventhe biggest companies deploying conventional PBXs can't match.Part of the IP PBX solution is the ability to connect multiple phones, combining telecommuters orbranch offices into a single virtual office, each one having an extension of a primary phone number, regardless of their geographic location. Packet8 offers this type of service under its "Virtual Atten-dant" brand. With more companies working in "virtual" mode, the ability to have multiple sites indifferent locations all connected with extensions is a tremendous advantage indeed.Another advantage for business users is the ability to select an area code from any location. Youcould, for example, have a local San Francisco phone number, even if your office is in Chicago, al-lowing all of your San Francisco customers to call you using a local number. Most VoIP carriersalso offer toll-free lines.

A VOIP phone system requires the use of SIP phones / VOIP phones. SIP phones come in severalversions/types:

SJlabs (http://www.sjlabs.com)Xten (http://www.xten.net)3CX VOIP Phone for Windows.

7

USB VOIP phonesA USB phone plugs into the USB port of a computer and with the use of a SIP/ VOIP soft phonesoftware behaves just like a phone. Essentially its not more than a microphone with a speaker, how-ever because they appear like a normal phone they are more intuitive to use for a user.

Hardware SIP PhoneA hardware based SIP phone looks like and behaves just like a normal ‘phone’. However it is con-nected directly to the data network. These phones have an integrated mini hub, so that they canshare the network connection with the computer. That way you do not need an additional networkpoint for the phone. Examples of hardware SIP phones are Cisco, Linksys, Aastra, Snom andGrandstream.

8

Use of analog phone via an ATA adapterIf you want to use your current phone with the VOIP phone system, you can use an ATA adapter. An ATA adapter allows you to plug in the Ethernet network jack into the adapter and then plug thephone into the adapter. That way your old phone will appear to the VOIP phone system software asa regular SIP phone. VoIP phones are very inexpensive to buy and can bought online via one of themany VOIP product online shops.

Recommendations / Conclusion

According to my point of view, one should select VOIP after analyzing his needs and finances. Forexample if you talk about a normal home user living abroad who just want to communicate his fam-ily back to home he should use only soft phone with lowest calling rate but good voice quality if noone of his family member uses internet. But if someone does use internet then they must go for theoptions in which PC to PC call is free like skype etc.

If it’s for business purpose and you have much use and want to use different features then definitelyshould choose one of the VOIP which provide good features which suits you according to the priceaffordability.

Conclusion is that VOIP should be selected on the basis of your needs and financial capability andavailability.
