York Catholic High School
Principal’s Notes
Dear Parents and Friends of York Catholic High School, Spring has sprung! Praise the Lord! The signs of spring are bringing joy to York Catholic. The flowers on campus are blooming, but more importantly, the students
are outside and moving. Our athletes are not the only group that has benefited from the nicer weather as our teachers have taken the students out to enjoy some fresh air. The Physics classes have been out and about completing lab work and Mrs. Euclide’s English students enjoyed an afternoon on the front lawn studying their most recent literary work. As I say repeatedly, we are blessed with the gift of your children.
Spring also means a time of bitter sweetness for our seniors and their families. We are especially proud of these students during this time of year, most of which have spent six years growing in our halls. When we had our first class meeting to organize events surrounding this year’s Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies, I explained to all of the seniors how much they have truly accomplished as individuals during their time here and thanked them for all they have given to YC
as students. While we know they will miss their classmates and the time they have spent together, we also enjoy conversation surrounding how much they will accomplish in the years ahead.
This year, we are honored to have Bishop Ronald Gainer as celebrant at our Baccalaureate Mass and Father Edward Quinlan, Diocesan Secretary of Education, to confer diplomas at Graduation. For more information regarding our end of year
ceremonies and procedures, please read through this edition of our Irish Eye. Finally, as indicated in a recent letter regarding next year’s tuition, thank you to all of our parents who took the time at the beginning of this year to complete the Middle States Association survey. The feedback from everyone regarding the future direction of our school has been outstanding. We are excited to continue to increase technology in our building for classroom use and to continue work on a
Master Plan. The Building and Grounds Committee to the School Board has contracted an architect who has met with multiple constituents to work on a Master Plan for our campus. Upon completion, the plan will be brought before the school board for approval and then presented to the Diocese of Harrisburg. Once those steps are complete, we will share the plans with our community.
Thank you as always for partnering with York Catholic in the education of your children. Sincerely,
Adrienne K. Seufert ‘96 Principal

News & Notes
PROM The 2015 Prom is scheduled for May 2 at the White Rose Ballroom at the York Expo Center. All students must be inside the ballroom no later than 6:00 PM. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Hanuska at
[email protected] or 717-846-8871 x99. Complete details about Prom can be found on the home page of the YC website. SENIOR BREAKFAST The Senior class will be honored on Tuesday, May 26 at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria. We’re looking for parent
volunteers to assist with the event. Please contact Ms. Jennifer Stees Glassmyer, Director of Constituent Relations & Special Events, at 717-846-8871 x51 or
[email protected]. JUNIOR RING CEREMONY The Junior class ring ceremony is scheduled for
Thursday, May 28 at 1:30 PM. The rings will be blessed, followed by a special reception for Juniors and their parents. Please note: the dress code will be strictly enforced. Anyone in violation will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony or reception.
MMS
Parents are reminded to check MMS to follow your student’s academic progress. Homework assignments and grades can be viewed by accessing your parent account. The students have their own unique logins to check their grades and assignments
as well. Using MMS to assist when a student is out
sick is encouraged. MMS can be a tool for greater academic success and responsibility. FINAL EXAMS Final exams for the second semester for grades 8-11 will follow this schedule:
Wed., June 3 Math & Social Studies Thurs., June 4 Religion & Science Fri., June 5 English & Foreign Language For most students, two exams will be scheduled for each day, except where conflicts will necessitate three. The testing periods will be 60 minutes.
Students are to report directly to their first test each
day; attendance will be taken in the testing rooms, not in the homerooms. Should a student not have an exam until the second testing period, he/she need not report until that time. If a student does not have an exam in the second exam slot, the student is free
to leave school at 9:45 AM. Approximate time frame for most students will be 8:15 AM until 11:00 AM. Despite the early dismissals, many school district buses will operate at their regularly scheduled times. Students should check with their bus driver in advance for specific details. Some students will need
to arrange for their own transportation home — especially students who are assigned to the Academic Assistance Center (AAC).
Lunch will not be served on Exam days.
For grades 9-11, these semester exams will comprise 1/5 of the second semester grade. Students in grade 8 will prepare for and take a final exam; this will be presented as a learning experience in preparation for the transition into senior high school.
In light of the importance of these exams and their scheduling, the only absence that will be accepted on these days will be with a doctor’s excuse.
FINAL REPORT CARDS The final report card of the 2014-2015 school year will be mailed home on Friday, June 19.
SUMMER SCHOOL A student who does not obtain a passing final average for a course will need to complete an approved summer school option. No more than two subjects may be completed in summer school. Any student with three or more academic failures must be retained
in the same grade. Students and parents will be notified at the end of the school year through the mail if a student has failed a class. Information on various school district summer schools, Keystone credit recovery correspondence courses, and private tutoring
will be provided at that time.
2015-2016 REGISTRATION To plan wisely, it is very important that we have an accurate count of student enrollment for the 2015-2016 academic year. A $150.00 non-refundable down payment per student and $45.00 SMART fee per family, made payable to YCHS, will be due by May 4,
2015. For complete details including an explanation of the new fees, please refer to Mrs. Seufert’s letter that accompanied the tuition and enrollment paperwork mailed to families in April. BACK TO SCHOOL PACKETS Back to School information and forms will be
distributed to all students on the first day of school,
and are to be returned to homeroom teachers by Friday, August 28. We will not be mailing student schedules home as we have done in the past. Students in grades 8-12 can simply log in to MMS after August 3 to view and print their fall class
schedule. Incoming seventh graders and all new students will receive their schedules in the mail the week of July 27.
3
FAMILY VACATIONS The proposed calendar for the 2015-2016 school year can be found on page 17. Please plan family vacations when your student has days off from school. It is extremely difficult for students to keep
up in class and make up work when they miss school. In many instances, one week’s absence from school can significantly impact grades. Any student with an average of 75% or below will not be given permission to be out of school for any extended period of time. Reminder: Students are expected to return from any trip with work completed. It is the student’s
responsibility to schedule make-up tests. Only five days for a trip will be excused per school year.
MID-TERM EXAMS 2015-2016 Mid-term exams for 2015–2016 will be completed at the end of the 2nd quarter. Please mark these days
on your calendar: January 13, 14, and 15. Please do not arrange travel before noon on January 15. These exam days are important and cannot be missed. Students will not be permitted to take a make-up exam due to a trip.
ROSTER CHANGES In February, returning students registered for their 2015-2016 classes, including choosing elective courses where appropriate. In light of these registrations, the Master Roster of classes is being
prepared. Parents and students are reminded that
any roster changes of courses requested must be made by June 1. Course requests made after June 1 must be accompanied by a written parental request, teacher approval (as originally needed), and a $25.00 Late Roster Change Fee. Since the Master Roster is built according to the original registration of students, we cannot guarantee admission to particular classes
after June 1. No course changes will be permitted after two calendar weeks once school begins. The last day for a course change for the 2015-2016 school year will be Friday, September 18. However, track changes in courses will be considered into the first quarter at the
discretion of the subject teacher for any student who
has been inaccurately placed in a course.
FLYNN & O’HARA UNIFORMS Flynn & O’Hara encourages parents to shop early and take advantage of the many convenient ways to shop for school uniforms. Parents may shop at a retail location, order at YC, visit https://www.fando.net/
or call 1-800-441-4122. Avoid the long lines and waits by shopping before August 1.
USED UNIFORMS The uniform exchange will be available for trades and purchases on June 17 from 4-6 PM in the Nurse's Office. Walk-ins on days other than this date cannot be accommodated. If you need uniforms, bring your
gently worn items for an even trade or purchase some at a reduced price: skirts $5, pants $4, sweaters $3, shirts $2. Uniforms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the size of the location, a maximum of five people will be permitted in the room at the same time. If anyone is interested in helping with the summer uniform exchanges, please contact
Barb Hamilton at 846-8871 x21.
SENIOR PICTURE POLICY - CLASS OF 2016 Each year YC enters into a contract with a professional photographer for the senior pictures appearing in our yearbook, ROSA MYSTICA. All
seniors yearbook photos must be taken by ElBe Photography. Pictures from any other photographer cannot be accepted for the yearbook. If desired, students can purchase yearbook photographs from ElBe. ElBe contributes a portion of Package purchases back to York Catholic.
All gentlemen must be clean shaven and wear a dress shirt, tie, and sport coat or suit jacket. Hair must be
regulation length. No piercings are allowed. Ladies will be provided with a black shoulder drape for photos. Only necklaces and earrings are allowed for
the yearbook picture of the young women. Please remove any facial jewelry.
ElBe Photography will be in the school library Monday through Friday, June 15-19 from 9 AM-2:30 PM to take yearbook photos of each student in the Class of
2016. There will also be a limited number of evening appointments available at the ElBe Studio located at 192 Kreidler Avenue in York, June 23-24 from 6-8 PM for those who have to work during the day or are not available the week of June 15.
Students MUST visit the following website between May 4-8 to schedule their appointments:
www.elbephoto.com/appointment
Appointments will be assigned to students who DO NOT schedule one on their own. Appointment times will be provided to all juniors by the end of May.
Handouts containing additional information — such as how to make an online appointment and the amount
of the Yearbook Sitting Fee were provided to all juniors in April. Cap and gown photos can also be taken at the school session.
If you have questions about the yearbook photos or you would like to schedule a studio or on-location

school and talk with faculty, staff, and students. Please help spread the word and invite families you know. Current parents are encouraged to join us to meet the new families and help answer their questions. For more information, call Ms. Hoffman at 717-846-8871 x20.
MINI-THON In March, 272 senior high students participated in York Catholic’s third annual Mini-THON. Students stayed on their feet for six hours while participating in a number
of activities including dodgeball, speedball, and Zumba. The students also enjoyed a Family Feud competition
as well as a Mr. YC contest. This year 10 students raised over $200 for the Four Diamonds Fund and earned the privilege of pieing Mrs. Seufert and Mr. Bailey in the face. As a whole, York Catholic surpassed its fundraising goal of $10,000 and brought in $16,103.40 for The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Thank you to all of the
student, parent, and faculty volunteers who made this event possible.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK Foreign Language Week was celebrated in March at York Catholic. The school lobby was decorated with flags representing international countries, and each school day commenced and concluded with a prayer highlighting the numerous languages spoken by York
Catholic students.

POET LAUREATE VISITS CLASSROOM Christine Lincoln, poet laureate of York, visited with freshmen and sophomores in Mrs. Euclide's English classes in March. She shared stories from her life, work as poet laureate, and shared her poetry and
excerpts from her novel, Sap Rising. She then prompted students to write, encouraging them as the voice and power of change. Ms. Lincoln is a local, full time writer, something quite unusual in today's world. Her novel won Washington University's prestigious Sophie Kerr Award, earned her an appearance on the “Oprah” show, and lauded the
attention of an agent in New York. Touting herself a "poet activist," she writes about injustice she observes in her daily life. Her visit was enlightening
as well as inspiring for many of our students. CAREER
DAY A SUCCESS Thank you to the many parents, alumni, and friends who
shared information about their careers with our students
in March.
2015 SPEECH FESTIVAL In March, York Catholic held its annual senior high Speech Festival sponsored by the English Department. Following classroom presentations by all senior high students, thirty-one students competed
for a spot in the finals. The top nine speakers presented their speeches to the entire student body during a school-wide assembly emceed by Michael Andrews and Kelsea Dvorak. Speech entertainment was provided by Maura Palandro. Congratulations to the finalists!

YC STUDENTS INSPIRED TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Social Studies Students During their study of the Great Depression, students
completed a project that helped them better understand what it is like to suffer under economic problems and poverty. The project required students to write journal entries about poverty in America, reform laws to help solve major issues facing the nation, and compare the Great Depression to the recent recession and economic troubles. Andrew
Downing, the teacher who coordinated the project, said, “The project gave the students an opportunity to understand the needs of many Americans and the
ever present problem of poverty.” Each student also donated ten non-perishable food items to the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry in York. By the completion of the project the social studies students donated over
600 items to the pantry. Spanish Club In March, Spanish Club assembled and decorated 50 treat bags of Easter candy to be given to children served by Compassion York. The group also held a bake sale to benefit Outreach Paraguay, a non-profit
organization founded by YC Spanish teacher Milner Sosa and his wife. The money raised will be presented to Senor Sosa at the May Crowning.

York Catholic Summer Reading
10
York Catholic High School views the development of life-long habits of reading as a hallmark of an educated man or woman, and it encourages each student to read widely throughout the year. The school also recognizes the value of other on-going academic engagement during the summer months. Summer reading and other intellectual activities serve to stimulate, to enrich, and to reinforce academic skills during the summer hiatus. We recommend that required books be read carefully and notes taken. Each current student will receive a packet with the assignments for the English summer reading before leaving for break. The assignments will also be available on the school’s website. Each grade
level’s requirements are clearly explained and testing and/or projects are due at the commencement of the school year.

WORLD YOUTH DAY CELEBRATION Students from YC joined Bishop
Gainer and close to 600 other teens from around the Diocese to celebrate World Youth Day on
Palm Sunday in March. We processed from
the Capitol steps to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the Palm Sunday Liturgy, and then continued to Strawberry Square with dinner and a dance party! If you did not get the chance to attend
this year, plan on attending next year. CHRISTIAN SERVICE REFLECTION The due dates for Students’ Reflection Projects are: Grade 12: April 24 Grade 7-11: May 4
PLEASE NOTE: The grade given for this reflection is a major grade in the 4th Quarter. IN ORDER FOR A GRADE TO BE GIVEN, Junior High students must have completed 12 service hours by this time; Senior High
students must have completed 16 service hours by this time.
Students may have completed all but a few hours for
the 2nd semester. Then they would need to do only a few hours to make their total hours and would write their reflections on those hours.
Service hours need to be completed at two or more sites. This is to challenge the students to broaden their experiences and to learn better the needs for Christian Service in our community. If there is the slightest question as to whether the type of service applies in this program, students are to ask their religion teachers. Please remember service may not
be done at the work place of parents or at for-profit businesses. MAY CROWNING/St. JOSEPH THE WORKER
MASS We will honor our Blessed Mother and our school’s Patroness with the Prayer of Consecration and the
traditional crowning of the Statue of Mary at Mass on Thursday, May 1 at 10 AM. May is traditionally celebrated as the Month of Mary in the Catholic Church. Let’s celebrate Mary and the arrival of spring!
MAY ROSARY DEVOTIONS The Rosary will be recited Tuesdays, May 5, 12, 19, and 26 at 7:45 AM in the Chapel. All parents, students, and faculty are welcome.
ASCENSION MASS Fr. Jon will celebrate Mass on Thursday, May 14, at 10 AM, in honor of the Ascension of our Lord into Heaven. The Feast of the Ascension is a holy day of obligation celebrated 40 days after Easter, which is always the 6th Thursday of the Easter season.
BACCALAUREATE LITURGY Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 28 at 7:30 PM at St. Joseph Church in York. Mr. Stebbings will
coordinate the liturgy planning with Father Jon and members of the senior class.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES Listed on the Guidance Events page of the YC website, students can find summer program listings. These opportunities include, but are not limited to, pre-college summer sessions. Rising 8th graders
through seniors should check out the list to see if something interests them. New opportunities are added as they are received.
CAREER OPPORTUNITES PROGRAM Four students completed the Career Opportunities Program with Ms. Carol Hill Evans from Bell Socialization Services Human Resources Department as their mentor. Students learned about job
etiquette, budgets, resume writing, career options, and job interviews. The program included a Career and College Day at Harrisburg Area Community College. Participating students included Josh Boyer, Ana Hernandez, Annie Sanders, and Eddie Smith. CAREER EXPLORATION FOR 2015-2016
There will be many career areas next year with mentoring opportunities for juniors and seniors. The students in these programs meet with professionals in
their career field of interest once or twice a month throughout most of the year. Students learn firsthand what a profession entails, further their self discovery, and make valuable contacts in the community that
can help with college admissions, internships, and future employment. The careers to be included for 2015-2016 are: Accounting, ACE Design, ACE Trades, Arts, Culinary, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, Hospitality, Human Services, Information Technology, Insurance,
Manufacturing, Actuarial Science, Financial Services, Agriculture, Law, Medical Assistance, and Creative Careers. Please let Mrs. Hess in Guidance know this spring if you are interested in one of these opportunities for next year. A signup sheet for Career
Exploration will be available in the Guidance office to
receive an application this fall. SENIOR ACCEPTANCES & SCHOLARHIPS Please bring in all of your acceptance letters and scholarship award letters for the graduation booklet. This information is also used for our school statistics. These must be handed in to Mrs. Gick in the Career
Room before May 8. We will make a copy for you and you can keep the original. We are proud of our seniors! We will honor their accomplishments by acknowledging the acceptances and scholarships at various functions and celebrations at the end of the school year. Seniors can also find their name on the bulletin board outside of the Career Room once their
college/scholarship information has been received.
REMINDER TO SENIORS AND PARENTS Final transcripts must be sent to the college you will be attending. Surveys will be sent home in May in which we will ask you to tell us the college you have
chosen. Seniors also need to successfully pass course work so they do not jeopardize graduation. Please contact Mrs. Hess with any questions.

JUNIORS Mrs. Hess will be meeting with juniors in April and May to provide college and career searches, plan SAT/ACT testing for the spring and fall, check interest in career shadowing or mentoring, and discuss letters
of recommendation. There are many shadowing opportunities available to our students and many juniors have already participated in WellSpan Career Shadowing. Additional internet resources including QuickStart, PA Career Zone, EP Career Clusters/Career Skill Matches, and Career Room resources will be considered in the planning process. An overview
of the senior timeline and the college application process will also be previewed, as well as preparing for a job or the military.
SOPHOMORES The sophomores have met with Mrs. Loughman four
times this school year for guidance lessons. In their first lesson together they explored careers and researched some career interests. During their second meeting students learned how to read and interpret their PSAT results as well as how to use College Board’s Quickstart program online to help them prepare for their future testing. The third meeting
consisted of a classroom lesson with Mrs. Hand speaking to students regarding their course selection for next school year. The sophomore’s last lesson covered their options available to them after graduating from high school. Mrs. Loughman will
continue to meet with students on an as needed basis
to cover any academic or social/emotional issues. FRESHMEN The freshmen have met with Mrs. Loughman four times this school year for guidance lessons. In their first lesson together they were welcomed to the
guidance department and received information about how to succeed in high school. During their second meeting students received a classroom guidance lesson on careers. Each student individually built plans on how to achieve their future career goals, starting in the high school years. The third meeting consisted of a small group lesson where students
completed an interest inventory and researched three
careers. The most recent meeting was a classroom lesson with Mrs. Hand who spoke to students regarding their course selection for next school year. The freshmen’s last lesson covered their options available to them after graduating from high
school. Mrs. Loughman will continue to meet with students on an as needed basis to cover any academic or social/emotional issues.
7th & 8th GRADE Miss Madara is the 7th and 8th grade counselor. She has met with both 7th and 8th grade six different times for group and classroom lessons this year. In February and March Miss Madara
worked with the 8th grade student on goal setting. Each student set a goal of something he or she wanted to work on during the 4th marking period. Miss Madara will check in with them during May to discuss their progress and make suggestions to help students who have struggled with their goals.
In March and April the 7th grade students had a career introduction lesson to Bridges Inc., an
online career exploration program. Students met with Miss Madara and researched careers that they were matched with based on a brief interest inventory. In May and June junior high students
will meet with Miss Madara on an as-needed basis.
