What is My Buttered Life?

My Buttered Life,The Personal Care edition, is the fourth of a series of guides containing recipes that are simple and effective, do not take complicated equipment to create, and can be made in your own kitchen.

In this book, we tackle personal care products. I’ve worked and re-worked these recipes over the past two years, as personal care is perhaps the most basic, yet important, area of skin care coverage. In this edition, I introduce you to the benefits of clay as a recipe ingredient.

The products: the facial cream recipe is one of the simplest recipes in this e-book to make. It’s my go-to cream when I wake up to a face that feels “tight” from excessive dryness. The hair butter is a product I’ve sold in my online store for years and I’ve finally brought the recipe here for you to enjoy. Men and women with dry hair that needs added natural oils benefit the most from this recipe. It’s handy for flyaway hair and can also be used as a styling agent. Black toothpaste takes the best of natural toothpaste recipes, leaves out any unnecessary ingredients, cleans your teeth and gums, and makes your teeth feel smooth while your mouth feels refreshed. The deodorant recipe went through the biggest work out. I took a fewpopular online deodorant recipes,read up on what didn’t work, kept the ingredients that worked, and replaced some of the other ingredients with clay and zinc oxide. After several months of testing, I still love the results, and so does my husband, who uses it daily. Lastly, a perfume stick is the perfect product to keep in your purse or to give as a gift. Use essential oils to customize with the scent you want!

The Story Behind My Buttered Life

I still remember the day I made my first hard lotion bar. It was December 2008, with Christmas right around the corner. My fingers adorned bandages rather than rings, due to the endless problem I had with cracked fingers that split to the point of bleeding. It was not exactly a Norman Rockwell view of Christmas, even with the smell of baked bread wafting through the house.

I had heard of a “lotion bar” but didn’t know much about it. This was a unique lotion packed with beeswax, the one ingredient that turned a creamy lotion into a hard bar. Recipes abound on Google, containingingredients like shea butter, avocado butter, olive oil, mango butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, almond oil, aloe vera butter, palm oil, wheat germ oil, coconut oil… and then there were the essential oils, fragrance oils, and additives. Where in the world would I begin?

I started with the easiest recipe I could find: coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax.

Years later, I’m using the same base of simple ingredients to make rash cream, sunscreen, hair butter, belly butter, facial cream, and more. Just like your core ingredients in the kitchen (milk, butter, and eggs), much can be done with a base of butters and oils that are tweaked to create a skin care solution.

Not only have my fingers been pain-free since that day in December, but the creation of the bar triggered an idea to begin a small business. Within two years of making the first lotion bar, our family turned it into a full-time business,which has brought the hard lotion bar to thousands of hands that are now clear and cut-free. Many hard lotion consumers have also contributed inspiration and conversation that led to more recipes and more solutions.

I hope these recipes will inspire you. You’ll have great results with the products you create, and I assure you that you’ll come up with your own variations to make new products. Once you get your hands on natural oils and butters, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the trees, plants, nuts, fruits, and seeds that bring us these amazing ingredients. The best part is that they’ll increase your quality of life as they work to benefit your skin.

Ingredient List of Benefits

BEESWAX: Clean, pure, comes in white or yellow, in blocks or pastilles, beeswax gives off a slightly fragrant honey scent. Beeswax acts as an emulsifier in skin care products and adds “body” or hardness where required. Look for filtered beeswax when purchasing. Long shelf life.

COCONUT OIL: This oil is light, non-greasy, and melts at 76 degrees. It is useful in formulations for dry, itchy skin and absorbs easily into the skin. Shelf life: two years.

SHEA BUTTER: Shea butter can be purchased refined or unrefined. The unrefined carries a smoky scent while the refined is primarily odor-less. Both are tan or yellow in color. If not stirred well into the rest of the ingredients, shea butter can produce a bit of “graininess” in texture in your final product. Its high fatty acid content provides the skin a rich emollient that protects the skin. Shelf life: 1-2 years.

ESSENTIAL OILS:Extracted from flowers, bark, fruits, herbs and spices, essential oils are highly concentrated oils that add a rich aroma to your product.

CARRIER OILS: These include sweet almond, apricot kernel, grape seed, sunflower, olive, jojoba, hazelnut, and more. They add stability to skin care products while softening and re-conditioning the skin. Shelf life: 1 year.

BENTONITE CLAY: This clay from volcanic ash sediment is used in this e-book’s toothpaste and deodorant recipes as a “toxin binder” and product thickener. ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Keep this on hand as a poison antidote as it absorbs most organic toxins. It’s a very fine powder so it’s extremely messy. Because it’s a known teeth whitener, activated charcoal is a key ingredient in this e-book’s black toothpaste. Long shelf life.

ZINC OXIDE POWDER: Zinc oxide is to white what activated charcoal is to black: fine, powdery, odorless, and messy. Zinc is an inert earth mineral that thickens the product, but more importantly, zinc acts as an anti-irritant and potentially an antioxidant.Long shelf life.

Create Your Own Scent Blend Trying to determine your unique scent blend can be overwhelming (and expensive!) for a first-timer. Let this page boost your confidence and give you a starting point. Ultimately, let your nose be your guide.

ESSENTIAL OILS 101

Essential oils (EO’s) are categorized by “notes”: Top Note, Middle Note and Base Note. Essential oils can move between two categories;some are listed in two categories on the following page.

Base Note EO’s are the long lasting notes. The scent will linger long after the top notes have faded away. Be careful with these as they can overpower the blend, and are usually the most expensive. Start with a base note, then add your middle notes and finally your top notes.

Middle Note EO’s add body and warmth to a blend. You’ll find your heavier florals here. Most essential oils fall into this category, although they may be listed toward the top or bottom of this category.

Top Note EO’s evaporate faster than middle and base notes. Of all the notes, this category can have more drops of EO in your blend than the other two categories. Top Note EO’s are usually light and uplifting scents, and they’re usually the notes you smell first. They tend to be light florals or citrus.

Essential Oil Groups: Essential oils are the liquids that are extracted from many parts of plants. An entire plant, when distilled, might only produce a drop of essential oil, which is why they are so potent. Here are the major group categories: Citrus, Flowers, Exotics, Resins, Spices, Trees, Herbs.

To create your signature perfume, use this ratio of base/middle/top: 1:2:4 Translate those to 1 drop of base, 2 drops of middle and 4 drops of top to start with. When you have the fragrance you want, multiply that to create your essential oil base for your recipe. Use this guide as a starting point; you’re absolutely free to change the amount you put in your own personal blend.

Your nose is your guide. Don’t forget to have a small cup of coffee beans on hand to clear the nasal palate between sniffing fragrances. This clears the nose from previously inhaled scents.

When shopping, be careful to check the ingredient list of the essential oil you buy. You won’t find an affordable pure vanilla or jasmine essential oil. They are usually blended with another oil. Make sure that alcohol is not listed as an ingredient.

Essential oils vs fragrance oils: Fragrance oils are a synthetic imitation of pure essential oils, and while essential oils should be your first choice, you could also opt for fragrance oils. You may find that choosing a blend of essential oils is to expensive, risky, or intimidating. Facial Cream A more precise name for this may be “emollient” but I call it my go-to cream for the face. Because my face is naturally oily, I only use this when I wake up with a tight-feeling face, or after I swim. A small amount can be used under make-up but discontinue this practice if it appears to clog your pores or produce breakouts. If you have wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, or your skin seems to be aging faster than you are, add the optional rose hip seed oil.

Ingredients Measurements Weight

Beeswax 1 ½ TBS ¾ oz. (add up to ¼ oz

more in hot weather)

Coconut Oil ½ cup 4 oz.

Rose Hip Seed Oil*(opt) ½ tsp ½ tsp

Total Weight 4.75 oz.

*Rose Hip Seed oil is an amazing moisturizer for wrinkled or aged skin, skin damaged from overexposure to the sun, or

burned skin. Do not use it on acne or very oily skin.

Instructions

1. Melt the beeswax and coconut oil using the double boiler method. Add rose hip seed oil,

if using, and stir with a wooden skewer.

2. Pour into container(s) and cool until set.

3. IMPORTANT: Clean out all residue from equipment with paper towels while still hot, and

follow up with washing equipment in hot, soapy water.

Nourishesskin and is safe for all skin types, preferably dry skin.

Troubleshooting: If it’s too thick, remelt and add more coconut oil. To thicken, remelt and add more beeswax. If adding essential oil(s), stir in right before pouring into containers.

Hair Butter (With Bonus: Beard Conditioner) The invention of MadeOn’s hair butter has an interesting background. My neighbor was attempting to apply the lotion bar to her hair to add shine and texture, and asked if I could modify the recipe to work better for her hair. My sister had just adopted a little baby from Ethiopia, and a local friend was wrapping up paperwork to add three Ethiopian children to her family. I had plenty of “hair” to experiment with. After a few go-arounds, Second Life Hair Butter was formulated and hair butter enthusiasts tell me that if I had to give up one product in my store, “please don’t let it be the hair butter.”

Ingredients Measurements Weight

Beeswax ¼ cup 1 oz. (add ½ oz. more in

hot weather)

Shea Butter 1/3 cup + 1 TBS 3 oz.

Coconut Oil 1/3 cup 2.75 oz.

Essential Oil (opt) ¼ tsp ¼ tsp

Instructions

1. Combine beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler.

2. Melt the ingredients, remove from heat, cool slightly, and stir in essential oil using a

wooden skewer.

3. Pour into containers.

4. IMPORTANT: Clean out all residue from equipment with paper towels while still hot, and

follow up with washing equipment in hot, soapy water.

Controls coarse, wavy, or dry hair.

Tames frizz and softens curls.

Beard Conditioner :Follow the instructions above but use these amounts: 1 oz. beeswax, 2 ½ oz. coconut oil, 3 1/3 oz.shea butter. Optional: stir in 30 drops total of a combination of cedarwood, sandalwood and clove essential oils before pouring.

Black Toothpaste Are you up for a challenge? Making this is easy, but what’s challenging is to get over the white, foaming paste that you’re used to, and replace it with black toothpaste. It was inspired by my favorite toothpaste,Earthpaste, but with a tweak in ingredients. The clay is there, the xylitol is out (add it if you wish, for sweetness, but I prefer using essential oils and salt for flavor), and the water is replaced with oil. Here’s my distinguishing ingredient: activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is a safe, edible botanical substance that whitens teeth, so it’s a natural add-in for this toothpaste. Keep activated charcoal on hand in your apothecary in case a family member accidentally ingests a toxin or chemical (it absorbs chemicals to reduce their toxicity).

Ingredients Amount

Carrier oil(sweet almond,

apricot kernel, grape seed, hazelnut) 1/3 cup or 3 oz.

Bentonite clay* 6 TBS

Activated charcoal ½ tsp

Sea salt* ¼ tsp

Essential oil** 4 drops tea tree

15 drops peppermint

Total Weight 4.5oz

Instructions

1. Mix clay and oil well. Stir in activated charcoal and sea salt. Mix well.

2. Add essential oils and stir well.

3. Pour into squeezable container (ketchup-type condiment containers are perfect).

Benefits

Black toothpaste contains no fluoride, chemicals, foaming agents or colorants. It simply

cleans your teeth and gums, and refreshes your mouth.

Deodorant If you’ve followed skin care DIY on the web over the past couple of years, you’ll find plenty of recipes for an easy deodorant using baking soda and coconut oil as the primary ingredients. You’ll also find complaints that baking soda irritated the skin, or that the deodorant wasn’t stable in all seasons. I really wanted something with a bit of zinc oxide to soothe an armpit rash. I also wanted to replace the baking soda with something less irritating. Clay came to the rescue. Finally, I didn’t want to “scoop” it onto my pits. Beeswax would take care of that. Enjoy this recipe and feel free to come up with your own favorite scent combination using the chart on page 10.

Ingredients Measurements Weight

Beeswax ½ cup 2 oz.

Coconut oil ¾ cup 6 oz.

Zinc oxide 3 tsp 3 tsp

Bentonite clay 6 tsp 6 tsp

Essential oils Approx. 2 tsp Approx. 2 tsp

Total Weight: 9 oz.

Instructions

1. Place beeswax and coconut oil in a double boiler. Melt.

2. Add zinc oxide powder and bentonite clay. Using a stick blender, blend until everything is

well mixed. Wait 20 minutes to cool slightly.

3. Blend again. Stir in essential oils. Pour into container(s) quickly. Deodorant is ready when

solidified. Store at room temperature.

4. IMPORTANT: Clean out all residue from equipment with paper towels while still hot,and

follow up with washing equipment in hot, soapy water.

Benefits

Soothes irritated skin, fights body odor. Not an antiperspirant.

Q: Can I use a regular blender instead of a stick blender?

A: I wouldn’t advise that. It can be compared to cleaning a container with hardened bacon fat:

it’s easier to wipe out than wash out. Some have had success with a hand held mixer.

Solid Perfume A long time customer, Michelle Carr, shared with me that she made a solid perfume using some of her own perfume. It seemed to last longer in the solid form, she said, and she was able to make it the way she liked it. She sent me a sample and I knew immediately that this was something I had to share. I played around with her recipe and researched some essential oil combinations to come up with a blend that I liked. Essential oils are better for the skin than alcohol-based perfumes, the scent lasts longer (alcohol-based perfumes evaporate), and with a carrier oil, you nourish the skin where applied. Be sure to review the essential oils on pages 9-10 to come up with your own unique scent.

Ingredients Measurements Weight

Carrier oil(sweet almond,

apricot kernel, grapeseed, hazelnut) 3 TBS 1.5 oz.

Beeswax ¼ cup 1 oz.

Essential oil(s)* ¾ to 1 tsp ¾ to 1 tsp

Total Weight 2.5 oz.

Instructions

1. Decide ahead of time what your scent blend will be and set the oils aside in a smallcontainer.

2. Melt the beeswax and carrier oil in a double boiler.3. Remove from heat, stir in the essential oils and pour into your containers. You can use

small tins or lip balm tubes. 4. Allow to harden, and then use or give as gifts.5. If using fragrance oil instead of essential oil, use cosmetic grade oil and double the

amount. See note on fragrance oils at the bottom of page 10.

Benefits: Alcohol-free, long-lasting scent that does not dry out the skin or quickly evaporate.

Troubleshooting: To ensure that your finished product has the correct hardness for your liking, remove some lip balm from an old lip balm tube and drop the melted perfume stickmixture into the tube, wait for it to harden, and then test on your skin. Do this before addingessential oils and before pouring (essential oils should not be heated for a long period of time).

If you want to change the scent of your finished product, you can re-melt and add other essential oils, but note that the efficacy of the essential oils will diminish when heated, and may require more essential oils.

Recommended Storage

Storage of Ingredients

All oils and butters used in this recipe book should be kept in a cool, dry place. They will last

a good six months or longer, depending on the age of the oil when you purchased it. An“off” smell

is an easy way to detect that the oils or butters are going rancid. Beeswax will last indefinitely

and powder products depend on the shelf life noted on the ingredient packaging. Essential oils

tend to last one to two years, unless otherwise noted on the container.

Essential oils, for providing scent, must be kept in a cool, dry, dark environment. When you

are purchasing the oils, you will usually find them in dark containers, such as smoky-brown glass

bottles.These protect the oils from direct light. Do not store them in plastic.

Storage of Finished Products

All products in this e-book should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and used within a year.
