Bellringer:

What is an Era?

Directions: You may use classroom dictionaries or your devices to look up a definition.

Directions: You have 5 minuets to answer after the tardy bell This goes at the top of page 13.

Answer: Era: a period of time marked by distinctive character, events, etc.: Example: The use of steam for power marked the beginning of an era.

Bellringer 9/1/15:

If you could explore somewhere, where would it be and why? Why do you think people want to explore new places? What are risks of exploring new places that no one has ever been to?

12

Directions: You have 5 minuets to answer after the tardy bell This goes on page 12.

Bellringer 9/2/15:Would you have volunteered for Columbus’ first voyage in 1492? Why or why not?

Directions: You have 7 minutes to answer after the tardy bell This goes on page 12.

Think about how you would survive if there were no grocery stores, transportation, or any type of store for that matter.“ Write a paragraph about how you might survive in this situation. What challenges would you face if you had to support yourself by living off the land?

What resources could be used as tools to help you survive?

What if you had to not only support yourself, but also care for children? How would that be difficult?

Do you think Columbus is a hero or villain? Explain your answer.

ABSOLUTE VS. RELATIVE CHRONOLOGY

An absolute chronology in history is a list or timeline of specific dates and events. For example, an absolute chronology would look something like this:

1987 1993 2000 2010 _________|__________________|__________________|__________________|_________ Ms. Juarez is born Begin Kindergarten Begin Middle school Graduate CollegePutting events in an absolute order is helpful and it shows clearly the relationship and succession of events. For an absolute chronology, you must know the specific dates of eras and events.

Relative Chronology is placing events in the order they happened relative to one another. You don’t have to know necessarily specific dates, but you should be able to use associations to figure out how to place eras and events in relative chronological order. _________|______________|__________________|__________________|_________Ms. Juarez is born Begin Kindergarten Begin Middle school Graduate College

Write definitions on page 14

Personal Timelines

Directions: On page 13 of your ISN, Take the next 7 min to construct your own personal timeline describing important events that happened in your life. An example of one is shown below. (You may draw it up and down so that your timeline fits better on your page.)

GAME: NAME THAT SOURCE!

Primary Source: is document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event.

Secondary Source: secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them.

I’m going to show an image you decide, by writing on a whiteboard, if it’s a secondary or primary source. Also, guess which era it belongs in. When I say “show me” lift your answers and show me.

PUSH/PULL

Immigration(Push/Pull Factors)

• Push and pull factors have always existed and they continue to push people to move from place to place.

Immigration(Push/Pull Factors)

• We learned that European exploration brought new parts of the world to the attention of Europe (England, Spain, France). Explorers returned to their homes with stories of the “New World” and wanted to settle this new land… and

Now, countries, kings, businesses, and individuals often felt pulled to settle these new lands. This started colonization. That is why we call this era the Age of Colonization.

• Colonization is the act of setting up a colony (A new place to settle) away from one's place of origin (where you’re from).

write this definition on page 14-15

*These colonies ended up sending goods back to their home country and made their home country richer (Mercantilism).

Final Word

"What do you remember pushed and pulled the first Europeans to America?"

• Person with biggest foot goes first.• 1st person has 10 seconds to share one point. • Moving in a clockwise direction, each person in the group

makes a comment or observation about what was initially shared.

• The conversation comes back to the first person who then gets the final word.

• The next person clockwise in the group takes the lead and the process is repeated.

Jamestown Colony• During the colony’s first winter a member of the ruling

council Captain John Smith was able to make an alliance (friendship) with the local Powhattan Confederacy leader.

• The leader’s daughter, Metoaka (Pocahontas), aided the settlers by providing them with food to make it through the winter.

John Smith and the Starving Time

• During the winter of 1609 and 1610 the alliance with the Indians soured and John Smith left, this caused the settlers to go through what was called the “starving time.”

Jamestown Colony• The colony did not become a profitable venture

until John Rolfe in 1613 started a tobacco plantation making it all the craze in England and Europe.

House of Burgesses• Due to the success of the

colony and people spreading into the rest of Virginia, the head of the Virginia company allowed the settlers to form their own colonial legislative (rule making) group called the House of Burgesses (representatives).

*They could make their own laws; this is huge!
