COMMITTEE MEETING UPDATES, NEWS & MEMBER INFORMATION TO WBDA MEMBERS
Waiuku Business & Development Association
Hi everyone
28th September 2018
L et’s hope this week’s was the last of the cold blasts, and we can put our winter
woollies away again and look forward to warmer days! There’s been lots of activity around the town recently, so here’s a bit about what’s been happening and what’s coming up. Don’t forget to check the calendar below for upcoming events and RSVP if you are coming to the Mix ‘n’ Mingle.
The Cutting of the last Mangrove Last Friday Deputy Mayor - Bill Cashmore, Andrew Bayley - Member of Parliament for Hunua, members of the Franklin Local Board, members of the public and the Mudlarks attended a ceremony to celebrate the cutting of the last mangrove. This represents the completion of the clearing of mangroves in the Tamakae reserve section of Waiuku’s water ways, due to the tireless work of the Waiuku Mudlarks and their supporters over the last couple of years. 16 hectares have now been cleared with lots more to do. Mr Cashmore announced that application for consent to start the next phase of
another way, the work would take 1 man 22.6 years working a 40 hour week. I’m sure you will all agree this is an amazing feat only made possible from this dedicated community group of volunteers.
Plastic Bag Free Town InitiativeI have been visiting businesses over the last few days to discuss ways we can rid our town of single use plastic bags. I’ve had a very positive response and the majority of businesses are keen to jump on board with this initiative. A local business has offered special rates on paper bag options and we will shortly have the re-usable bag racks available in the town centre. Retailers have commented that in many cases, the customer would rather not take a plastic bag but they have left their re-usable bag behind. Some of our retailers are selling re-usable bags which fold up small to fit into a handbag or to keep in the front of your car where you can see it. Every business who moves to plastic bag free and those who already are, will receive a certificate to display and a special window sticker to say they are proud to be plastic bag free
work has gone to council.
Just to give you an idea of the scale of this job here are some staggering facts:
• Total area of mangroves cleared to date 24.6 hectares
• Total weight of mangroves cleared at 125 tonnes / hectare is 3075 tonnes. It takes 12 man hours to clear a tonne of mangroves so this equates to a total of 36,900 hours (for mangrove clearance only)
Other work:• Seedling clearance & planting
including community working bees, 2500 hours
• Administration 1000 hours• Cradle & strope manufacture 175
hours• Maintenance barge, chainsaws
480 hours• Meetings 1006 hours• Building of Mudlark bridge opened
May 2013, 2100 hours
In total, 45321 man hours, or to put it

and supporting the clean green town initiative. We also plan to run “Good on ya” stories of businesses that are really going the extra mile and taking up zero waste initiatives in the Friday Flash and our Facebook page to get the word out and help publicise their efforts. If you have any queries about re-usable, paper or other bag options, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 235 6231.
place previously and there is no threat to safety, then you should call the non-urgent crime line or the local station 09 236 5020 where if unanswered will be directed to Crime Line. He said the use of Social Media to share information with the community is great but first the crime needs to be reported to Police.

Rural Policing Review There was quite a good turn-out for the meeting with Dave Glossop, Area Commander South at the St. Andrews Centre last week. He outlined how the rural policing review will affect Waiuku which includes a 24 hour dedicated patrol car for rural areas during weekends. He said crime stats for our area remain fairly low at the moment but emphasised the need for the public to report anything of concern to police straight away. If something is currently happening, has only just happened or you think it likely a crime may take place, you should call 111 immediately. Your call can then be directed to the best place for the quickest result. Calling the local station is not ideal as this may delay the response as officers are usually busy dealing with crimes and the station may be unattended. The Police cannot act unless they are informed. If a crime has already taken
