Did you know…

…that there is a kind of kufr (disbelief) that is obligatory on every Muslim?

In fact, one cannot be a Muslim without committing this particular act of disbelief. It is the disbelief that Allah (SWTLA) refers to in the following verse:

قاد ٱس لا فا يؤمن بٱلل غوت واكفر بٱلط ن يا ى فاما شد منا ٱلغا ينا ٱلر با ين قاد ت اها فى ٱلد اما تا إكرا ة ٱلوثقاى لا ٱنفصا كا بٱلعروا مسا

ليم ميع عا سا ٱلل ا وا لاها

"Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taaghoot and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:256)

It is thus a condition for a person's Islam that he not only believe in Allah SWTLA and His messengers, but he must also disbelieve in everything that is worshipped besides Allah

SWTLA. This is the essence of a Muslim's testimony of faith: Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, meaning: "There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah."

HIC was founded in 1985 in Huntsville, Alabama and serves as the center of the Islamic community for North Alabama. With the multitude of nationalities, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds of our community, HIC strives to operate effectively to support and meet the needs of our diverse community, without giving preferences to any group.

The mission/vision of HIC is to live our faith as a congregation, inspired by the teachings of the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as individuals and as a collective body, and to be the anchor of a model community of practicing Muslims of diverse backgrounds, democratically governed, efficiently served, relating to one another with inclusiveness and tolerance, and interacting with neighbors in an Islamic exemplary fashion.

HIC Offers a variety of services to its members and non-members including congregational prayers and services for all Muslims, educational programs for both adults and school age children, Youth Center activities for both physical and religious enrichment, and many other activities for adult men and women. Additional services are offered for special events such as weddings, funerals, etc.

Under the auspices of the HIC, the Islamic Academy of Huntsville (IAH) is a non-profit school that was founded in 1997 serving the Madison County area. IAH provides an academically challenging curriculum aligned with American National Standards. Instruction in the Qur’an, Islamic Studies and Arabic are all offered. Asalaamu Alaikum! Michael and I are relatively new to the HIC. Michael was born and raised in Alabama and I was born in California and moved around quite a bit, through Texas, St. Louis, and eventually ended up in Alabama in 1997.

Michael reverted to Islam in June 2011 and a month later we met. Michael had talked with me about Islam and tried to answer my many questions, however we decided to come to the HIC on August 7, 2012 with the intent to learn more about Islam and get our questions answered. As my questions were answered, and as Allah SWTLA

Michael & Jessica Key

willed it, I was so touched by Islam’s truth and beauty that I took my shahada that very same day. To add to the whirlwind of activities, Michael and I were married at the HIC the next day and began our journey toward building a new Islamic life together.

Although there have been struggles in establishing a home and obtaining employment, we continue to pray and ask Allah SWTLA to guide us and give us strength to get through these times. The brothers and sisters at HIC have all been very welcoming, helpful, and supportive of us both, for which we are very thankful. We’ve also learned a lot about Islam in the classes we’ve attended at HIC and look forward to meeting more of our Muslim brothers and sisters!

If you would like more information about HIC community events and opportunities to meet other members of our Muslim community, or if you would like to suggest an event to help strengthen of our Islamic community, please refer to the HIC

Holy Qur’an

Focus Topic: Taqwa - Consciousness of Allah SWTLA

Allah SWTLA reminds us in the third surah of the Holy Qur’an, al-E-Imran, that the ultimate means of keeping remembrance of Allah is with the recitation of the Qur’an. There are many different practices that Muslims are instructed to participate in, but the best practice in which to gain the highest reward is looking to the Book of Allah SWTLA. The Qur’an plays an essential role in the life of a Muslim and in the life of a community, as not only a source of infinite wisdom in regards to the matters of this world, but also as a reminder to that which we know about the path to the Hereafter.

A reminder is not new information, rather it is information on something that is already known but not kept in the center of one’s thoughts. Allah SWTLA reminds us many times in the Qur’an of those things which we have forgotten, which lends us to an appreciation to the repetition that is found in the Book of Allah. Those things which Allah SWTLA has mentioned multiple times also indicates the proportional importance of that particular lesson and our need to be reminded about its importance. Taqwa (God-consciousness) is mentioned over 200 times in the Holy Qur’an, which means Allah SWTLA is telling us that we are very likely forgetting to apply Taqwa in our daily lives.

‘Obey Allah and the Messenger so that you may find mercy.” In this verse Allah SWTLA has equated the ones who are obedient to Allah SWLTA and His Messenger PBUH as those who are hopeful of receiving the mercy of Allah SWTLA. So for those who are eager to obtain the mercy of Allah SWTLA first they must to change their attitude toward being obedient to the commandments of Allah SWTLA.

A couple of ayat before this Allah SWTLA tells us, “Oh you who believe! Devour not usury, doubling and quadrupling (the sum lent).” It is easy to participate in practices which involve interest in these times, when banks will provide you with seemingly endless opportunities to earn multiple times over on the money which you have struggled to earn. Though what we are given is bountiful, we continue to desire for more satisfaction, to want more wealth, and thus many of us turn toward endeavors involved with usury. Allah SWTLA gave us an alternative to usury to fulfill this desire when He says, “observe your duty to Allah” so that we may see the fruits of our labors multiplied in a much more fulfilling way than a few more interest dollars earned may provide.

Yet, even then, if you do not feel that the remembrance of Allah SWTLA will satisfy your desires, then Allah SWTLA says further, “ward off the fire” that would be the ultimate reward from those who’s choice it is to disobey their Lord. Allah SWTLA has reserved the hellfire for those who disbelieve, for those who disobey His commandments, and for those who are ignorant of His direction.

Allah SWTLA, in His infinite wisdom, continues to remind us to be conscious of His direction, to feel greater satisfaction with our provided sustenance than that which may be obtained through forbidden means, and to have Taqwa so that we may in turn be obedient to Him and may receive His mercy.

Oh Allah, let us be of those who race for Your forgiveness and of those who receive Your mercy. Ameen.

O you who believe! Devour not usury, doubling and quadrupling (the sum lent). Observe your duty to Allah, that you may be successful. And ward off (from yourselves) the Fire prepared for disbelievers. And obey Allah and the messenger, that you may find mercy. (Holy Qur’an, Ch. 3 Al-E-Imran, Verses 130~132)

Race with one another towards Forgiveness from your Lord and towards a paradise the width of which spans the heavens and the earth. It has been prepared for the God-fearing, the ones who spend in prosperity and adversity, and those who control anger and forgive people. And Allah loves those who are good in their deeds, and those who, when they happen to commit a shameful act or wrong themselves, remember Allah, then, seek forgiveness for their sins and who is there to forgive sins except Allah? - and do not persist in what they have done, knowingly. (Holy Qur’an, Ch. 3 Al-E-Imran, Verses 133 ~135)

A reminder: You are the rock of the family, the supporter, the guide and protector. Be Healthy!

The Muslim man is ultimately responsible for important decisions that may need to be made in the family, such as where the family will live, where the children will attend school, etc. This does not of course mean that he cannot consult with and seek the advice of his wife and children, but that if there is any disagreement as to the best course of action, he will have the final say. Having this responsibility also means that the man should not abuse his position and realize that he will be answerable to Allah SWTLA on the Day of Judgment as to the decisions he has made.

Brothers ’

Den

In addition to the responsibility to his family in life matters, he is also expected to go the mosque for the daily prayers, as well as congregational prayer on Friday. He should involve himself in spreading the message of Islam and provide his wife and children with opportunities to educate themselves about religion and worldly matters.

With all this responsibility, one thing that men can do is focus on their health! A lot of men only go to the doctor when they have a problem, when they feel bad, and neglect routine physicals and blood pressure checks. . Men tend to develop heart disease at an earlier age than women, so it’s important to take preventative care measures. Issues can be detected early and high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be controlled. It’s important to try and get a handle on cardiovascular risk factors, signs of heart disease and risk of stroke, whenever we can.

Another thing that a lot of men, even younger men, feel is tiredness or sleepiness when they should not have any reason to be. Sleep apnea, a condition associated with loud snoring or times when breathing stops at night, can greatly effect overall health. If your family tells you that you are loud when you sleep, or that you seem to choke or wake up from difficulty breathing, see your doctor to determine if these could be symptoms of a health problem that may need to be addressed.

The woman's nature means that there are certain virtues which Allah SWTLA has made specific to her, such as the protection of her honor and the honor of her children. Religious texts ordained that the woman's body, except for the face and the hands, should be covered in front of all except those who are a mahram (those she is forbidden to marry) and that a woman should not sit in private with a non-mahram.

Furthermore, the female naturally has a greater sense of modesty and sensitivity. Hence, though she should demand her rights and practice them accordingly, this practice should be such that her modesty, dignity, virtue and sanctity be preserved.

Mezes, the Persian for “tasty snacks,” have evolved into much more than mere snack food. Hot or cold, spicy or sweet, mezes are collectively eaten as a meal. To make your own mezes meal, try the following recipe. Group them up with some prepared dips such as hummus, warm up some pitas and enjoy!

Muhammara (aka Roasted Red Pepper & Walnut Dip) -Makes about 1½ cups

This delicious Syrian dip is the cousin of hummus and is equally at home as a dip for pita bread or as a sauce for meats.

1. Preheat a barbecue or broiler on high heat. Grill or broil peppers with skin side closest to the

heat source for 8 to 10 minutes or until skin is black and blistered. Transfer peppers to a bowl and let stand until cool enough to handle & peel off skin.

2. Preheat oven to 350° F. Place walnuts on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned and fragrant. Cool.

3. Combine all dry ingredients in a food processor and process until walnuts are finely ground. Add red peppers, olive oil and pomegranate molasses, and process until uniform.

Season with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature.

2 red bell peppers, quartered & seeded 1 cup walnut halves 2/3 cup fresh bread crumbs 1½ tsp chopped garlic ½ tsp ground cumin, preferably freshly ground

1/4 tsp cayenne 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp pomegranate molasses (or lemon juice) Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Guess What!

Allah is not the God of Muslims only. He is the God of all people and all creation. Just because people refer to God using different terms does not mean that they are different gods.

Spanish people refer to God as "Dios" and French people refer to God as "Dieu", yet they are all the same God, Allah.

Interestingly, most Arab Jews and Arab Christians refer to God as "Allah“, and the word ‘Allah’ in Arabic appears on the walls of many Arab Christian churches.

The difference is in how Allah is worshipped, and Islam, our religion, is the one that Allah said is perfect! Alhamdulillah!

Arabic Language Lab

Arabic is an important language to learn as a Muslim because it is the language that Allah SWTLA has chosen to be the language of the Holy Qur’an. Though learning any language may seem a daunting task at first, eventually and with the help of Allah SWTLA, anyone can learn to read the Qur’an in its original Arabic form. Here’s a little help in getting started with learning the language of the Qur’an.

English Language Lab

English is the language that the majority of Americans speak and so it is critical for anyone living in the US to be able to speak, read, and write in English. Many who come to the US already know a little English, but may need to work on proper sentence structure and with understanding common terms used in conversation. Here is a little help with your continued English language journey.

بسم ٱلل

.First, Arabic is read from right to left, so we start on the right when learning how to read Bismillah بسم ٱلل

Next, let’s break down the phrase letter by letter.

How to read Bismillah:

ب س م ٱ ل ل ه Then assign a sound to each of the letters. ah L L A M S B

(Remember, read from the right!)

Arabic has sound indicators added by little marks above or below the letters. They show you which sound, or no sound, should follow the sound of that letter. These marks are in red above. The sounds that each mark makes after the letter are shown here: = i = (no vowel sound) ا = a

Finally, we put the sounds together to say the phrase ٱلل بسم Bi ss Mi aLLahi (Some ‘a’ and ‘i’ sounds remain silent when read)

Note, some of the letters’ ‘tails’ don’t hang down anymore, like the S and L, but instead connect to the next letter.

Now you’ve done it, you’ve read بسم ٱلل ! Bismillah means “In the name of Allah”, a phrase which you say whenever starting anything which you do for the sake of Allah SWTLA. Great Job!

Word Meanings Sentence Structure

Habit – an acquired pattern of behavior that often occurs automatically

Example: “It is my habit to wake up for Tahajjud in the middle of the night. I just wake up, even without an alarm.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consequence – something produced by a cause or necessarily following a set of conditions
Example: “My son broke an expensive vase in the store. As a consequence, I had to pay for the vase and he had to apologize for his mistake.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Induce – to call forth or bring about by influence

or stimulation

Example: “The repetition of certain topics in the Qur’an is meant to induce remembrance of those in our daily lives.”

A sentence requires a subject and a predicate to be complete and understandable.

A subject can be a noun or pronoun that is partnered with an action verb. Example: Susan ran to catch the bus.

Sometimes a verb will express being instead of action. Example: Susan is a teacher.

Sometimes we use sentences in which a subject is not actually stated, but is understood in the meaning. Example: (You) Call tomorrow. A sentence like this gives a request to someone.

A predicate is a verb that expresses the subject’s action or state of being. Examples are shown in orange above.

Sometimes the predicate will be composed of two or three verbs that fit together. To be a predicate, a verb that ends in -ing must ALWAYS have a helping verb with it. Example: Susan was running to catch the bus.

Charitable & Volunteer Opportunities

Charity is not just recommended by Islam, it is required of every financially stable Muslim. Giving charity to those who deserve it is part of the Muslim character and one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Whether you give in zakat, or sadaqah, or in simple service to those in need, it’s every Muslim’s responsibility to respond to those less fortunate.
