HiCap Board Parent Survey Results

201 RespondentsJune 2015

Preface

This survey was conducted by the HiCap PARENT Advisory Board, and is NOT sponsored in any way by the Northshore School District. We will use the results to guide our parent advocacy efforts next year, and will share aggregate/anonymized results with the district as well.

Please answer this survey with one particular child in mind. If you have multiple children who have the need for "highly capable" services, please take the survey again for each child.

This survey is anonymous.

Survey Goals

• For the HiCap Parent Advisory Board to:– Better understand the experience of parents in the

current HiCap programs across the district, including EAP, AAP, HiCap in the neighborhood school at both elementary and junior high levels.

– Better understand the experience of parents testing their kids into the HiCap programs.

– Inform our advocacy and education priorities for next school year.

– Possibly reuse this survey in future years as a yearly survey, where results could be trended over time.

Implementation

• Survey was circulated to the 1,874 email addresses on the hicap board mailing lists

• 201 full responses (plus 62 partial responses)

• Survey open from June 17 to July 13, 2015

* Note that there are not enough respondents per school to even begin to draw conclusions about the relative strength of their inschool hicapservices. This data is reported only to demonstrate that there is no general pattern by school or geographic region. (The couple 4.00 numbers are from schools that had one respondent.)

Open Response Verbatims

• Verbatim responses from open response questions are reported in separate files.

• Where needed, names or other identifying information was blanked out.

• There were three open response questions:• 5. We'd love to hear about your experience testing your child. We know that the

experience isn't always smooth, and that there are many students across the district who should be qualifying for the program, but who aren't. The more information you can offer, the more likely we are to discover patterns that may help the HiCap Parent Advisory Board understand which populations of kids are having trouble being identified and why, so we can advocate to fix that. The current tests are the best ones available for this purpose - we've looked - but clearly no test is perfect.

• 19. Overall, how has school gone for your child this year? What things went well? What things went poorly? Do you think there are specific things the teacher, principal, or district could have done to improve the experience for your child? Any other suggestions, ideas, or concerns to share with us? We really appreciate it when parents share their story as it helps us advocate better for you.

• 20. What do you think the HiCap Parent Advisory Board should prioritize working on next year? What are the most important things that you think the board could help with?

Thank you!
