Feeling Blue? Act Green! It seems that watching wildlife shows, exploring parks and gardens, lookingat fabulous mountain and oceanviews, and getting away from it all tothe bush and Pacific island beachesare not only pleasurable, but areactually good for us!

Eminent biologists, psychologists andhealth professionals are showing thatcontact with nature — whether throughparks, natural bush, pets or farmanimals — helps us recover from stressand mental fatigue, helps us relax andputs us in a good frame of mind.

Of course, most of us know thisintuitively and it’s probably why we aredrawn to nature instinctively. We allknow that a walk on the beach, downa bush track or in a park is good toclear the head when we feel a little tiredor stressed.

So, next time you are feeling like a lift,‘act green’: do some gardening, pet thecat or dog, take a walk around the parkor head down to the water for sometime out.

Better still, don’t wait until you’re tiredor feeling flat. Act green more often.Being in touch with nature makes usfeel good, builds good mental healthand helps beat the blues. And it’s aseasy as A-B-C!

Act: do some gardening; take a walkaround the local park; watch a wildlifedocumentary; take time to watch the sunset; spend time with pets...

Belong: get a group together fora picnic in a natural setting; visit awildlife sanctuary with friends; join ahiking group...

Commit: become a ‘civicenvironmentalist’; join a tree plantinggroup; volunteer to keep your localparks & gardens clean; take uporienteering; learn more about ecology;offer to take a home-bound person outto a park...

Being active, having a sense ofbelonging, and having a purpose in lifeall contribute to happiness and goodmental health.

2015 BLOOM FESTIVAL

Page 3: Hidden Treasures - Albany Gateway · 2019-07-08 · Hidden Treasures Bloom Festival events in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. With the realisation that what we as

Chairperson’s WelcomeIt is my pleasure to again welcome visitors to the 2015 Hidden Treasures Bloom Festival events in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

With the realisation that what we as ‘locals’ knew and loved, could be of interest to the wider community and

travellers, the Hidden Treasures of the Great Southern was born. As the name suggests, within our eight Shires, we have a wealth of ‘hidden treasures’ just waiting for you to discover and enjoy.

Spring paints our landscape in yellow and green as the crops and pasture look their very best and a short stop along the way will reveal many ‘hidden treasures’ including patches of wildflowers, natural scenery and photo opportunities.

This year, we have more than 37 ‘events’ or activities to introduce visitors to the wonders of the Great Southern including our magnificent wildflowers, natural attractions such as the Stirling Range, Fitzgerald and Porongurup National Parks, award winning wines and locally grown foods, open gardens in full bloom, train rides and whale-watching along the coast.

There is something for everyone so take the time to seek out those other treasures including local cafes, war memorials, heritage buildings, museums and much more in each town.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our presentation partner Healthway, promoting the Act-Belong-Commit message, our Principle Partner the Great Southern Development Commission, and our partners Eventscorp, Regional Development Australia, CBH and the eight local government authorities that cover the Hidden Treasures area for their assistance and encouragement. Thank you also to our dedicated volunteers, the Gnowangerup and Frankland River Community Resource Centres and the Shire of Cranbrook who have assisted with the co-ordination, administration and preparation for the 2015 Bloom Festival.

The enthusiasm which all our partners and exhibitors bring to this Festival each year ensures that it will continue to ‘grow and blossom’ as a major attraction for the Great Southern region and I welcome you to enjoy this year’s Hidden Treasures Bloom Festival.

Di HollyChairperson

Ministers’ WelcomeWELCOME MESSAGE FROM DR KIM HAMES MLA, MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND HON TERRY REDMAN MLA, MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Welcome to the Hidden Treasures Great Southern Bloom Festival.

Held over four weeks across eight shires, the festival showcases the very best of the Great Southern, including its wildflowers, cultivated flowers, culture, art, natural attractions, and regional food and wine.

Western Australia is home to more than 12,000 species of wildflowers – the largest collection in the world – and events such as this help to highlight our unique offering to visitors.

The Hidden Treasures Great Southern Bloom Festival is proudly supported by the State Government through the Great Southern Development Commission’s Community Chest Fund and Tourism WA’s Regional Events Scheme, which are jointly funded by Royalties for Regions.

Royalties for Regions invests in a variety of initiatives to help grow Western Australia’s regional areas into thriving and sustainable communities.

Tourism is a vital industry for regional Western Australia. In 2014, total visitor spend in the State was $8.6 billion, $3.8 billion of which was spent in regional WA. The State Government’s goal is to see the contribution of regional tourism increase to $4.75 billion by 2020.

Supporting events such as the Hidden Treasures Great Southern Bloom Festival will help us achieve that goal. Regional events generate valuable promotion for regional Western Australia, provide a boost to the economy and add vibrancy to towns, making them exciting places to visit, as well as great places to live.

We hope you enjoy the festival and your stay in the Great Southern.

Dr Kim Hames MLA DEPUTY PREMIER MINISTER FOR TOURISM

Hon Terry Redman MLA MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

A field walk in nearby bush will allow you to spot native geophyte examples, as well as enjoy the wildflowers in bloom. Please note that you must provide your own transportation from the workshop site to the field walk.
