HIGGS BOSON• Otherwise known as Higson Particle it was predicted to exist

in 1964.• It is an elementary particle or particle made of other particles

such as quarks and leptons.• Explains why something has mass when mathematically

(theoretically) it should not.•Was the last piece of the standard model of quantum physics.• Scientists find that as you move to the microscopic world the

laws of physics breaks down. Quantum physics is the study of these altered laws.

TOOLS OF THE TRADEHadron collider used to hurl particles at each other to create collisions and make the particles even smaller.

MORE TO THE STORY!• As particles get smaller and smaller they do not exist

in one place but rather a field.• Thus, particles can be in two places at one time.• The discovery of the Higgs Boson particle lead to

belief in the Higgs field.• The Higgs field is said to be the ether to space that

gives us mass.• In extremely simple terms it would be like the water

in the ocean to aquatic life; it permits the resistance and buoyancy in the material world.
