A Message from Rabbi Schiftan. . . Temple Strengthens Ties to the Community at the
Start of the Jewish New Year
(continued on page 3)
There are manythings I love aboutJudaism. The onethat comes to mindas we enter the Fall
is that there is more than one New Year.We have several, each celebratingsomething different. Rosh Hashanah, ofcourse, celebrates the New Year for theworld. There is one that celebrates the NewYear for trees, Tu B’shevat. One celebratesa new year of tithing. And still anothercelebrates a new year for cattle. I love theFall because, to me, it has always meant achance for change, a clean slate, a freshstart. And that is such a wonderful gift.As a child, the Fall meant three things tome. One was my birthday. One was a newschool year – new clothes, new classes, newteachers, new hopes. And, of course, Fall
“Happy New Year” by Patty Marks
meant the High Holy Days. They alsomeant new clothes, but they meant noschool, as well. I recall very little aboutthe Days of Awe as a child in Memphis. If I prayed at all, it was probably that Iwasn’t missing a test, as so oftenhappened.
These days I view the High Holy Daysthrough the lens of a congregationalpresident, a lay leader, and I take thatseriously. Occasionally, I have to apologizefor things that happen at Temple. Wesometimes make mistakes and I am oftenthe one who hears about it. Sometimesit was something I said or did or didn’tsay or do that made someone unhappy orupset. And sometimes it was someoneelse’s words or deeds. Whichever it was, part of my job is to make them feel betterby apologizing. I have learned that “I’m
sorry” can dif fuse the most volatilesituation. It can be the glue that connects(or reconnects) someone back to theircongregational home and feel a part of this, their Temple family. And that is how itshould be. So, as part of my personalpreparation for the High Holy Days, I askyour forgiveness if I have done anything tomake you feel hurt or angry. I would neverwant to get in the way of you and yourcommitment to this institution and to yourfaith. There is so much that we offer, notjust in programming, but in support of andhelp to our members, that it is importantto me that everyone feel that theirconnection is strengthened and valued bythose of us who make the decisions aboutwhat goes on and how things work.
Dear Members ofThe Temple Family,
I hope that each and every one of you hada restful and restorative summer, a chanceto get away and connect with those whomyou love or who are dear to you. Withoutquestion summer affords us theopportunity to catch our breath and torenew our vision for the year ahead.
In that spirit, we have been quite busymaking plans for several extraordinarycommunity building events set to occur inthe coming weeks. With great pleasure Ishare some of what is about to unfold inthe coming months:
Multi-Congregational Habitat forHumanity Kick Off - Friday,September 11th at 7:30p.m.Representatives and members fromseveral congregations will gather at TheTemple for a special Sabbath Service
to inaugurate yet another homebuilding project, involving membersof The Temple, for Habitat forHumanity. Clergy from many ofthese congregations will beparticipating in the service.
Belmont University President toLead Study Session on Yom Kippur at 3:15 p.m.Dr. Bob Fisher, along with his wifeJudy, have co-written a book basedupon their interviews with more than100 terminally ill patients at AliveHospice. The themes of the book-acceptance, forgiveness, the strengthof familial love- mirror many of thethemes of the Day of Atonement. Wewill look forward to welcoming themduring the annual hour we’ve set asidefor study and reflection on theafternoon of Yom Kippur.
Tent City Homeless Photo Exhibitto debut at Sukkot Service – Friday,October 2nd
Come learn of the new and innovativepartnership The Temple has forgedwith the Otter Creek Church of Christto both raise our awareness and to offersupport and relief to the homelesscommunity of Nashville. Members ofthe church have been invited to join usthat evening and I would welcome yourpresence that evening as ambassadorsof The Temple.
Even as we prepare to look inward on theHigh Holy Days, we continue ourcongregation’s strong and proud history inreaching outward to build bridges withthose with whom we share those diverse anddifferent components that are part of theNashville Community.
My best wishes to you and yours for a healthyand happy New Year.

There is a hero inside each of us waiting to be discovered.Help us as we partner with a very special organization, The Family Affairs Ministries.
FAM, (www.familyaffairministries.com/faminc.htm) located in East Nashville, provides guidanceand support to broken and impoverished families. This year we want YOU to be a HERO.
Let’s begin by providing much needed food.
List of Items Requested
Take a bag home and bring it back full by Sunday, October 4th
Each year I find it amazing that the New Year has arrived andwe are beginning to plan, organize and execute another array of possibilitiesof learning and growing. This year we have tried to take a differentapproach by having our theme be “The Year of Heroes”. We know thereis a hero inside each of us waiting to be discovered and we also are awarethat our ordinary skills can do extraordinary things. This year we are
going to make those things happen. We will meet and talk with some incredible people, both in our congregationand our community. We are also partnering with the Family Affairs Ministries (FAM) and having each gradego to their facility to work with, organize with, play with and meet with their community. This organizationbegan in 1988 with the mission of “restoring families and rebuilding communities”.
We are excited to be able to offer our assistance and begin the process of being heroes to not onlyourselves but others. We will begin with a food drive. FAM is in desperate need of food and we are hopefulthat each student in our religious school will take home the bag they will be given on the first day of ReligiousSchool and bring the bag back by October 4th, with food, to The Temple, so that Pastor Sutton can pick up thefood for the children she services. We are also having a congregational clothing drive throughout the year.Clothing is needed for children through adults and we will be asking our students to sort and organize theclothing you so generously donate toward this effort. Clothing can be left in either the boxes provided aroundthe building or in my office.
Finally, as I write this article, I sit at my desk cancer free and forever grateful for my life, my family, myfriends and my congregation, who all helped me successfully overcome this “pothole in the road” with yoursupport, kindnesses and positive thoughts. I look forward to a year of great accomplishments, learning andgrowing.

Mural, Mural on the Wallby Jan Huettner
A big surprise greeted everyone as we started our new semester. Our all-purpose room (a.k.a. the school auditoriumor the “big room”) was transformed from blank, beige walls to a beautiful outdoor scene, with animals hidden aroundthe room, waiting to be discovered. According to artist, Alan D. Robinson and Kevin Cox, who also contributed to theproject, “harmonious blues were incorporated throughout the room to create a soothing, open feel to the landscape.”In addition, there was an abundance of local f lora and fauna for the children to explore, including the Tennessee stateflower (Iris), the state butterfly (Tiger Swallowtails), and the state bird (Mocking Bird). Joining the animals indigenousto Tennessee were 100 birds, 15 ladybugs, 3 spiders, 6 caterpillars, 8 earthworms, 9 bumble bees, 10 ants, 5 beetles, 1raccoon, 1 opossum, 4 butterflies, 17 ladybugs, 1 owl, 1 cat, 1 dog, 1 field mouse, 7 grasshoppers, 1 squirrel, and 1 fawnhidden in the big room mural. Also included were two activity boards that could accommodate both chalk and magnets.
This exciting “make-over” was made possible by generous funding from our Temple Playschool parents, raisedfrom the spaghetti dinner profits. We thank everyone responsible for this wonderful mural. We hope to enjoy it foryears to come.

Senior Temple Youth Meetings
In a partially wooded area under I-40 near downtown Nashvilleand the Cumberland River, Tent City is “home” to some 60
homeless men and women who live in shelters built ofcardboard, tarp, discarded billboards – whatever they can find.Atnip’s photographs depict the residents as they go about their
daily lives. During a special ceremony on August 12th,Otter Creek Church of Christ passed the exhibit to
The Temple, a gesture symbolizing the understanding byboth congregations that caring for the homeless in
Nashville is an interfaith effort.

High Holy Day TermsCheshbon Nefesh: A term that literally means “an account of the soul.” During the Hebrew month of Elul, the month immediately preceding the Jewish New Year, many Jews take it upon themselves to conduct this“inventory” of all their actions, thoughts and behaviors during the last year, and contemplate on how to dobetter next year. The list should contain both times we acted our best, and times we could improve.
Tashlich: From the Hebrew meaning “to cast away,” this is a ceremony where we symbolically cast away oursins into running water, using bread crumbs. Our Tashlich service begins after Rosh Hashanah morningservices, as we walk together to our creek to cast away our sins with readings, music and contemplation.
Teshuvah: From the Hebrew meaning “return” or “repentance,” this concept is at the center of the HighHolidays. With contemplation, hard work and sincerity, we can always return to the right path, the right way, even when our actions have led us astray. Admitting our faults and failings, we can begin anew. The ten daysbetween Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yamei Teshuvah – the Ten Days of Repentance.Together with Tefilah (prayer) and Tzedakah (justice, or charity), Teshuvah is a way to achieve the HighHoliday blessing for a good, sweet year.
Selichot: Literally meaning “forgiveness,” it is a time intended for self-evaluation and reflection required tofully engage oneself in the High Holidays. We reach out to those we have wronged, intentionally or not, andask for forgiveness. We also grant forgiveness to those seeking it from us. Our Selichot service and programis Saturday evening, September 12th.
Shabbat Teshuvah: This is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It literally means theShabbat of Return, or Repentance. Words reflective of the High Holidays are inserted into the prayerservice.
Kever Avot: Literally, “the graves of our ancestors,” this is the Cemetery Service between Rosh Hashanahand Yom Kippur. Judaism reminds us that the introspection that we are required to do cannot be accomplishedwithout looking back to those who have had an effect on determining our lives. Our Cemetery Service isSunday, September 20th at The Temple Cemetery.
Kol Nidre: Aramaic for “all vows,” these are the opening words of the formula for the cancellation of vows.It is recited on Yom Kippur eve, set to a haunting melody. As we reflect on past behavior, we understand thatsometimes we make personal vows and oaths unwittingly or rashly. This prayer annuls those personal vowsfor the coming year, even as we still attempt to be more careful of our words and promises made.
Yizkor: From the Hebrew meaning “remembrance” this is part of the Yom Kippur afternoon service whenwe take time to call to mind those loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose memories and influenceremain in our lives.
Neilah: Literally meaning “to close or lock,” this is the name given to the final service on Yom Kippur, immediately after Yizkor. Symbolically, the Book of Life is sealed at this time, as the final blast of theshofar is sounded and the fast is broken.

ADD/ADHD Support GroupPlease join us for our first meeting
Sunday, October 25th
10:00 a.m. at The TempleMany of us love and live with someone with ADD/ADHD.
Aptly named “Turbo Brain” by Dr. Edward Hallowell, we are oftenrevved up ourselves, and we could use someone to talk to. Temple is
starting a support group to talk about the ADD issues we face, share strategies, read books, hear from experts, and do whatever else
we feel will helpus be more successful parents and partners.
at the home of Rabbi Goldstein Mackler
