CULTURAL WEEK

Page 2: High Notes #13 - 9 Sep 2013

FROM THE HEADMASTERDear Parents and Guardians,

In Week 7 we celebrated the annual Cultural Week in which the many aspects of the Marist College North Shore’s creative and performing arts were displayed. My congratulations are extended to all of the students involved in the various activities and to the many tutors and staff who helped prepare the students.

Our Annual Father and Son Breakfast that took place Friday 30th August was once again well patronised by the gathering of 500 parents and sons. The mums, ably led by Elizabeth Byrne, prepared a beautiful buffet meal for the 500 dads and sons who attended. They deserve our heartfelt congratulations for this work.

Year 12 are presently engaged in a very focused and thorough preparation for their HSC. Families are reminded that at these times some students need encouragement to focus on their goals and to put in the extra time necessary to receive a creditable outcome. I wish you every success in that project. Students should try to be working well now because the holiday period that is coming up will slip away before we know it.

Beau Drummond (12 Chanel) received the Archbishop Award from Cardinal George Pell in an annual gathering at St Mary’s Cathedral last week. Beau received his award for his outstanding all round commitment which is enhanced by his very Christian outlook and demeanour towards others.

Preparation is well underway for the Year 12 Graduation Day on Friday 20th September Years 7 and 11 have particular roles to play in the Graduation Mass. These expectations have been detailed to parents via email, hard copy, website and the College app. It is most important that Year 7 and 11 attend to these commitments not only because the favour will be returned to them when it is their turn to graduate, but also because this year’s Senior Class has been wonderful in leading the school during this past twelve months.

Voting for 2014 school leadership positions have taken place and will be announced at the graduation ceremony on Friday 20th September. It is an exciting time for those students going into Year 12 because they are given the added responsibility to be a positive leader and

influence towards the younger students. Keenan Singh was announced at last week’s assembly as the College Captain for 2014. Keenan is a fine young man who we are proud to have as Captain. Well done Keenan!

Last week, Mrs Drivilas and Mr Dela Paz organised a House Cup challenge chess tournament. Almost 120 students participated in an effort to score points for their House. I believe that the competition should become an annual event so that the profile of chess can be lifted in the eyes of the students and whole school community. A full report and pictures will feature in the next High Notes edition.

There are quite a few other activities that have taken place since our last High Notes that I have not mentioned, so I encourage you to continue to read through the articles inside this edition of High Notes.

Best wishes for the coming fortnight,

Br Peter Corr, fmsHeadmaster

Congratulations to Jake Bredeson (12 Chanel) on receiving his Blue Tie

FROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTERYEAR 12

Year 12 are now approaching the end of their schooling and have been reminded of the importance of staying focused on their studies. They have normal classes up until Graduation day which is Friday 20th September. At a recent meeting the point was made that this is a time for reflection and review. Perseverance was the key word that was discussed as each student was challenged to achieve their best. A simple quote from Einstein was used as a reflection; what the key is to being persistent and not be discouraged with your studies. “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

- Albert Einstein

COLLEGE CAPTAIN 2014

Last Wednesday at our Cultural Assembly, Br. Peter was pleased to announce that the College Captain for 2014 is Keenan Singh from Moore House. Keenan is a motivated young man with a strong sense of what means to be Marist. He sets himself high standards, has strong morals and models these values. He is well respected by both staff and his peers. We wish Keenan the very best with his captaincy over the coming year.

Over the next few weeks, the remainder of the College Leadership team will be selected and presented to the College.

Keenan Singh (11 Moore) with Mr & Mrs Singh following the announcement of his 2014 Captaincy

THANKYOU MARIST FAMILIES The College recently has enjoyed two of our significant community events. The College Walkathon and the Father’s Day Breakfast were outstanding successes and epitomised the wonderful family spirit that is present at Marist. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents who gave so much of their time and effort in assisting in making these events the wonderful occasions they were. I encourage where possible for parents to become involved in the College community events as it gives you a deeper sense of the College’s aspirations in looking to achieve positive outcomes for the young men in our care.

FAITH FORMATIONYEAR 12 REFLECTION DAY

‘Trust, Love, Live’ - these words were the theme of the Year 12 Retreats earlier in the year and on Monday this theme was revisited as part of the Year 12 Reflection Day. The day gave students an opportunity to learn about the key relationships they have in their lives, why these relationships are important to them and why they work. The day had many highlights as the boys took the opportunity to take a break from HSC studies and enjoy each other’s company before they embark on their final steps towards the HSC. I invite you to read Timothy Fung’s reflection on the day.

Trust is an important aspect of any relationship in life. It is essential both within the school environment and for life outside of school. On Monday 2nd September, Year 12 went on a reflection which encapsulated the themes of ‘trust, love and live’ that were explored on the Year 12 retreat.

During the day we also reflected on our near future and life beyond school. Enabling us to develop a more wholesome experience within our year group. This allowed us to gain insights in our understanding of our year group and the trust that we have developed with one another.

Special mentions go out to Mr Chris Hopkins for running the Reflection Day which was both insightful and valuable for our personal and spiritual development.

SOLIDARITY

On Sunday 1st September, we celebrated Father’s Day and the impact that our Fathers have had on our lives. I am sure most of us celebrated the day through a meal with our Fathers and the gospel reading on that day also talked about sharing a meal:

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath, they were watching him closely.

When he noticed how the guests chose

the places of honour, he told them a parable.

When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, Give this person your place, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he

may say to you.

Friend, move up higher; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of

the righteous. Luke 14: 1 & 7-14

This can be a challenging Gospel when first read. Students at the College are given opportunities to act out this Gospel through their involvement in social outreach programs, Solidarity and from the example of our founder St Marcellin Champagnat. The life of Marcellin and the values that he stood for are seen throughout this Gospel, as Marcellin founded the Marist brotherhood in order to bring education and to make Christ known to the poor and outcast, as well as living out his life with humility and other-centered focus.

Through programs like Solidarity, students have the opportunity to invite those who may be on the margins of life to the feast, whether that be a sandwich at Night Patrol, cake and coffee at Surry Hills or by playing Dominos at Georgian House Nursing Home or being at Matthew Talbot. Students bring those on the margins of life to the table and we hope that they do it with the same passion and humility of St Marcellin. I invite you to read a reflection from Jack Garay regarding his experience at Matthew Talbot.

Page 5: High Notes #13 - 9 Sep 2013

FAITH FORMATIONOn Wednesday 4th September, Chris Brown, Nick Kain and I went on the weekly Year 11 Matthew Talbot Hostel service for the afternoon.

This service is run by three Year 11 Solidarity students, and a member of staff supervising. Matthew Talbot is one of the largest mens hostels in the southern hemisphere, supplying food and a canteen service for hundreds of homeless or disadvantaged men of all ages.

The purpose of this afternoon was not to simply serve coffee and biscuits at the canteen, but to fill a major gap in society, giving the disadvantaged men a chance to feel independent again through being able to purchase their own goods. Although these snacks may be much cheaper than your usual supermarket products, its gives these man a chance to feel they can begin to support themselves again, and have a friendly chat as normal everyday people.

Overall, I encourage any Year 11 student that is given the opportunity to go, to invest in doing so. To be able to contrast the expected image of ‘sad, quiet men’, to people who just enjoy being able to have a talk, and still smiling no matter their finances or their circumstances. It’s a real eye opener on the values and morals we should seek to attain in life!

Jack Garay11 Kelly

I hope you all have a lovely holiday – please keep in your prayers our Year 12 students as they embark on their final journey of high school and ask yourself who are you going to invite to the table.

END OF PRELIMINARY YEAR EXAMINATIONS

The Year 11 End of Preliminary Exams begin this week. It is important that students use their time at home wisely with regards to preparing for each of these exams. It is also imperative that students maintain a balance in their lives, so I encourage all students to ensure that they incorporate family and other break times into their study regime. Students need to find what style of study best suits them individually. However, some tried and tested techniques involve highlighting key ideas or words in written texts, summarising using dot points, creating flash cards or even mindmapping to help remember key ideas or concepts.

Students are reminded to be at the La Valla Hall twenty minutes prior to the start of an exam and are not allowed to bring any electronic devices including mobile phones and iPods into the examination room.

Students wishing to drop subjects or change Maths and English courses for their HSC year must wait until after the Preliminary Exams to so, however they may collect a blue Change of Subject sheet from my office at any time.

YEAR 12

Year 12 supervised study is still being held in the College Library every Thursday during sport time and Wednesday after school. During the last week of this term, there will be extra study session of an afternoon as indicated in the schedule provided in a previous edition of High Notes.

The Board of Studies has released HSC Exam workbooks again this year. These contain 2012 HSC exemplar responses from students for a variety of courses. Marker feedback is also provided from the Marking Centre. For more information, use the link below:www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/manuals/hsc-exam-workbooks.html

Good luck to all of our Year 12 students as they complete their final term of classes. Remember to use the remaining time wisely; ask your teachers for as much help and guidance as possible leading up to the end of Term and clarify anything you are struggling with as much as possible.

CREATIVE ARTSCULTURAL WEEK 2013

The depth of talent by the students was again revealed at the annual Cultural Week festivities. I was amazed by the high degree of resolution and sophisticated idea development seen in the Year 12 Visual Arts Body of Works which were on display. Congratulations to the Year 12 Visual Arts class and Ms McGrath for mentoring the students to achieve the best for their creative and academic endeavours.

The next generation of artists was on show through the Draw Off Competition where nine teams were challenged by the concept ‘Underground’ in a collaborative art work. They had to submit ideas and sketches prior to the event for consultation and to explore deeper layers of meaning with the selected concept.

On Tuesday 27 August at 9.00am, they commenced the all day competition with only a few disagreements and a little mess, concluding at 3.00pm. The standard was excellent and the winners were announced at the Cultural Assembly.

2013 Winners: Hunter Eckford (9 Moore) and Nathan Niguidula (9 Kelly) Runners Up: Dominic West (8 Kelly) and Dylan Sharp (8 Kelly).

On Wednesday evening Mr Herbert hosted the annual Spring Music Festival. The standard of musicianship was the best I have seen over the years and this is due to the diligent rehearsal program for the Senior and Junior Band. Mr Kevin Camrass and Billy Burton joined in and added outstanding mentorship and drive to the brass and woodwind section.

The Drum Ensemble under David Smith’s (11 Chanel) direction performed three brilliant pieces and their unity in performance was one of the highlights of the evening. My personal highlight was the Senior Band’s rendition of ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder. Roupen Minassian (10 Chanel) was scat singing with Mr Herbert in an improvised challenge which brought the house down - congratulations to all!

Also performing were a few Year 12 Music students brushing up their HSC performance pieces prior to their examination in Week 8. I personally want to thank the many parent helpers, in particular the McQueen family, for organising the refreshments for sale.

The Cultural Assembly allowed for the many students who were involved in the College Musical “Promises, Promises”, the Band and Ensemble Program, those involved in the CEO Clancy Art Prize, the Mosman Youth Art

CREATIVE ARTS

Competition and those students who were involved in the 125th Anniversary Mass in June in both the Vocal Group and the Orchestra. I would like to personally thank the many students who were willing to participate and assist in the running of the assembly.

On Thursday 5th September, Year 11 Drama preformed their production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Abridged). Congratulations to all those who participated in the entertaining show.

It would be very remiss for me not the thank the Creative and Performing Arts staff: Mr Jorge Vafeas, Mr Rod Herbert, Mr Kevin Camrass, Ms Kathleen McGrath and Ms Paula Reinhold as well as the College Executive and the entire College community who have always supported the College’s cultural endeavours.

CONGRATULATIONS

Well done to Roupen Minassian (10 Chanel) on his recent success at the local eisteddfods. He achieved a Highly Commended at the City of Sydney Eisteddfod and a First Place at Ryde Eisteddfod.

Roupen has generously sung at many assemblies and functions at the College and he is also accompanied Year 12 Music students in their HSC performance Exam last week.We all look forward to hearing Roupen perform at future College events.

JAZZ IMPROVISATION TUITIONBeing able to improvise is one of the important performance skills that assist musicians of all levels. This especially would assist performers aiming for HSC and Elective Music.

The College is now offering individual lessons teaching students how to improvise in Jazz including both performance improvisation work with accompaniments and basic jazz theory by Mr Tony Gardiner. Tuition offered is for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute.

These lessons should be used in conjunction with the regular instrumental lesson with your usual tutor who teaches all aspects of playing your instrument in all styles. Lessons can be taken weekly or fortnightly. Please contact Mr. Herbert for more details and a tuition enrolment form: [email protected]

SCIENCETARONGA ZOO

On Tuesday 20th August, Year 7 went to Taronga Zoo as part of their Science unit - Classification and Adaptions. The aim of the day was to study different animals and to classify them in different ways and name their adaptions as we went through the zoo.

Upon arrival at the Zoo, the entire year couldn’t wait to jump right in and get started. It had been a while since I had last been to the Zoo and I must admit it was a lot more modern looking than I remember. There was so much to see and do that we were amazed at what we could find throughout the Zoo.

To start the day off all students went to see the cute Koalas. The Koalas were hidden all over the enclosure and as we tried to seek them out we had to answer questions such as “Why is the Koala a marsupial?” and “Describe dangers that threaten the survival of Koalas.” After that, we went into reptile world to see the roguish Reptiles

and tried to sort all of them into groups of Lizards, Snakes, Crocodiles and Turtles/Tortoises. It was hectic running around trying to group all the amazing animals we were seeing.

We had a meeting with some long-necked Giraffes. Staring up at the huge animals who have babies that are taller than us, we were awestruck while we tried to think about what advantages Giraffes have from being so tall and what problems they may face.

There was no time to sit around though as we raced off to the Seal show. Seeing all the Seals doing their amazing tricks was great.

Next we had a great lunch at the restaurant which had its own natural cleaners - the birds! We then visited the bird show in wth birds flying over our heads in which had everyone in the crowd ducking.

There was no time for rest though as we raced to the Zoo Education Centre where we learnt all about classifying animals and the different groups they can be classified into. We were even allowed to touch each animal and feel their textured skin while we were under the watchful eye of an amazing bird. Finally we were able to visit the climbing c h i m p a n z e e s who were running, climbing, chasing, swinging, sitting and so much more in just the short five minute period we were there. After an action packed day, we race to the bus to get back to school before three o’clock.

All in all the day was great fun and a fantastic learning experience. It was amazing to get up close with the animals in the Zoo Learning Area and see all the animals throughout the Zoo. If I ever had the chance to go on a trip like this again, I would definitely take the chance.

TASHSC INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

A highly committed group of boys completed the practical component of the HSC Industrial Technology course and produced one of the most diverse range of projects ever assembled at the College. Students were encouraged to look to their strengths and to select projects that would stimulate their creative processes and foster the self-discipline necessary for success in this subject.

As is always the case, both students and staff learned a great deal from the journey leading to the completion of the project. Whilst much practical and theory work was completed within the normal College days, many hours outside this time was given up by students and staff in the quest for the development of construction techniques and the subsequent completion of each student’s project. The students are commended on their fine and interesting work that they have produced.

MATHEMATICSMATHEMATICS EXTENSION 2

ENRICHMENT DAY

On a chilly morning on Tuesday 20 August, the Mathematics Extension 2 class ventured out to CEO Southern Region at Revesby for a HSC preparation day. We gathered with around fifty other HSC Mathematics Extension 2 students from Catholic schools across Sydney in order to cement key concepts and develop problem solving techniques with the aid of experienced Mathematics Extension 2 teachers.

The day was a great success with all boys taking much confidence from the preparation day knowing that we could solve most of the challenging HSC standard questions that were given to us. Many thanks to Mr Dela Paz for giving us the opportunity to attend this event and for giving up his time throughout the year to teach us the course.
