"I don't want other kids to have to learn the hard adult les-

sons that I did while I was just a teenager," says MayKela Cox,

who hopes to become the next Miss Utah Valley University.

MayKela grew up in a very abusive situation, and didn't

have anybody that really parented her. She missed having the

love and boundaries that other kids had. Fortunately for

MayKela, in spite of a bad situation at home, she found help

and hope through caring teachers and coaches as she attend-

ed Provo High School. These people reached out to her, help-

ing her keep out of trouble, stay in school, and, to her own

amazement, make it to college.

MayKela made the track team at UVU and is a very talent-

ed athlete. But she still felt a little lost, and started to wonder if

college was really for her. Alisha Lee, reigning Miss UVU and a

good friend of MayKela's, suggested she look into the Women's

Success Center at UVU. But MayKela dismissed it, thinking the

center was something only for older, divorced moms trying to

get back into school, not for somebody young and just starting

out, like her. Alisha assured MayKela that the Women's

Success Center would provide her with the help she needed

and, eventually, MayKela decided to give it a shot.

She's glad she did. MayKela found a loving staff at the

Women's Success Center who really cares about her individual

circumstances and is helping her find ways to succeed in all

her educational goals, including her quest for the Miss UVU

title. Now MayKela finds herself in a position to help others.

She has been inspired by her high school coaches and teach-

ers and by her newfound support team at the UVU Women's

Success Center. She wants to inspire others to reach out and

help kids in need, and hopes winning the Miss UVU crown will

help her do just that.

Utah Valley University is dedicated to providing higher

education opportunities to all who seek them, especially to

women. UVU has established the Women's Success Center to

offer women and girls the support and resources they need to

complete their degree and gain the confidence, opportunity and

knowledge that come with a diploma. Learn more by visiting

The "Right" College at the"Right" Time!

What is the right college and when is the right time to go to college? More and more students

are looking for colleges that offer flexibility, online courses and programs, and a year-round system to

finish school in a shorter period of time. Also, the best time to start college is right now! A college

degree opens doors, and is really necessary for success in today's world. Hopefully, the college

you choose offers career assistance so that you have the opportunity not only to get a better job,

but also to make more money. In Utah, Stevens-Henager College is an example of a school that pro-

vides all of these types of benefits:

1. Fast-Track Programs: You can earn an

Associate's degree in as little as 15 months, or a Bachelor's degree in as little as 30

months. Earn degrees in business, graphic design, medical specialties, or computer tech-

nology. While students in other colleges are still in class, you could have your degree, be

working, and making money.

2. Flexibility and Convenience: You don't have to wait for the beginning of a

year or semester to enroll. Flexible course options enable you to get started this month

in day, evening, or online classes so you can continue working while going to col-

lege.

3. Certifications/Licenses and a Degree: Certifications can

mean more money, and a degree commands respect, lasts a lifetime, and is

important for promotions. You can get a degree and prepare for certifications at

Stevens-Henager College. Why settle for less?

4. High-Value Programs: The programs at Stevens-Henager

College are packed with career-specific knowledge and skills. Multiple skills are

taught in each program, which gives students many more career opportunities.

5. Employment Services: One of the best reasons for choosing

Stevens-Henager College is that employment assistance is provided to graduates.

The Career Services staff assists you in résumé writing, finding exciting jobs, setting

up inter-

views, and

practicing for the interviews, including what to say and even

how to dress.

More and more students are recognizing that Stevens-

Henager College may be the right college and the right time.

Stevens-Henager College is a small college that has been

around since 1891. For more information about this college

High School Students Gain theAdvantage from MATC Programs

Parents of a high school student, or soon to be in thenear future; listen up. One of the best kept secrets in all ofUtah County high schools, is the MATC programs.

Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC), inpartnership with the three school districts in Utah County, pro-vides Career and Technical Education (CTE) to juniors andseniors. MATC is part of Utah College of Applied Technology(UCAT), which is one of the ten higher educational institutions.

The mission of the Utah College of AppliedTechnology (UCAT) is to provide, through its regional campuses, mar-ket-driven career and technical edu-cation to both secondary and adultstudents, which meets the demandby Utah employers for technicallyskilled workers.

UCAT prepares students toenter, re-enter, upgrade, or advancein the workplace, which contributesto economic development, andimproves the quality of life for Utahcitizens.

High school students enrollinto the program through their highschool counselor. Each studenttravels to their local MATC campus,(Spanish Fork, Orem, AmericanFork and our new campus atThanksgiving Point) where they willreceive instruction for their program. Most of the training is hands-on,allowing students to learn and gainan important skill which helps themto land high paying job. The bestpart of the MATC program is thattuition is free, yes free to highschool students. There are howev-er, fees which are required to bepaid, but they are very affordable. All of tuition costs are covered bythe state. Some of the programshas concurrent enrollment to UVSC,while others are high school elec-tives.

Some of the MATC pro-grams carry a state-license, whileothers programs are certificates.Students can obtaincertificates/licenses in DentalAssistant, Medical Assistant,

Information Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, CertifiedNurse Assistant, EMT and much more.

In today's job market, technical skills are critical toboth new and experienced workers. MATC competency-basedtraining is an important factor for competitive jobs. Workerretraining and skills upgrade are part of every strategic busi-ness plan today. For more information on these MATC pro-gram contact MATC Students at 801-863-6282 orwww.mlatc.edu

How Did a Beauty Supply Store Become the Preeminent HalloweenCostume, Makeup & Accessory Store in Utah County?

Good question. In 1975, the first mall beauty supply store was opened at the UniversityMall in Orem by Rick Taylor. With beauty products filling floor displays, the store was surroundedoverhead by a collection of movie-quality wigs, masks and décor. As Halloween grew (as well as themovie studios and theaters need for costumes andmakeup) so did the selection.

Today, Taylor Maid Beauty Supply boaststhe largest Halloween costume rental, makeup andretail costume inventory in Utah Valley. With themain store located on Center Street in Provo, coupledwith an entire back warehouse full of rental costumesfor any occasion, Halloween brings professionalmakeup artists to ply their trade in the salon to createamazing monsters, witches, goblins and gore.

With temporary Halloween stores in theUniversity Mall, Pleasant Grove and American Fork, they will be, by far, the largest temporary Halloweenstore in the valley, with well over two times the inven-

tory of the stores in 2006. One temporary store is located in the main corridor of the University Mall.Another temporary store is at the Macey’s grocery complex on State Street in Pleasant Grove just afew doors down from Macey’s and the other is in American Fork at 648 East State Road. Have a fan-tastic Halloween. See you soon!!!
