Cards 21 Steelers 132006 marks the year that the Arizona Cardinals take the first step towards building their best team in the franchise history. What better way then to makethe first game in the new, sold out stadium a 21-13 win over last years World Champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The pre-season game was led from start tofinish by Arizona and all indications are that this is the year for Big Red. The building was full, the streets were backed up for miles in all directionscausing about a third of the fans to get to their seats after the kick off. Once inside, the fans spent as much time wandering around the facility as they didwatching the game. Who could blame them? The stadium is a shopping mall with a football theme and for the shoppers Christmas came early. For thevendors, well, let’s just say that running out of product was a good feeling.

On the field, Kurt Warner and his offense set the stage for what promises to be one of the most exciting scoring teams in the NFL this year. We all knowabout Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. But the third receiver in that set is Bryant Johnson and for the defenses the Cards face this season he willbecome known as the one that gets away each week, for first downs and touchdowns. Throw in Edgerrin James on the ground and the NFL’s mostversatile fullback, Obafemi Ayanbadejo, tight ends Adam Bergen and Leonard Pope and the road to the NFC West title clearly runs through Glendale in2006. Scoffers, step off. Get over yourselves. Stop being haters and get behind the team that can make NFL history at many different levels.

The defense was already on the rise last year and now it will have an ally on offense that will enable it to finish the season in the top five in NFL scoringdefenses. The ringleader of this group of gridiron grifters will be the baddest boy on the block, safety Adrian Wilson. He has 10 interceptions in fiveseasons but the stat that stands out is his 2005 NFL record setting 8 sacks for a defensive back. Helping make it ugly for the other team’s passers will bethe tenacious and aggressive corners Antrel Rolle and David Macklin and safety Robert Griffith. Line backing will be setting the Pace with formerdefensive lineman Calvin Pace moving into the kill zone. This is a man that was knocking people into next week when he had two and three and blockerstargeting him. Pity the fool that gets through the line thinking he dodged a bullet only to wake up on Wednesday at the ICU with 97 tattooed on his chest.

Wait, there is more! Middle backer James Darling has buddies like Orlando Huff, Gerald Hayes, and Darryl Blackstock to help murderize running backsand brave tight ends that don’t understand the danger, yet. In the trenches Bertrand Berry, Chike Okeafor, Kendrick Clancy, and the Deathstar himself,Darnell Dockett will be redirecting traffic and otherwise negating the opposition’s efforts. The stats from the Steelers game are simple, and yes, spare methe lecture of “It was just a pre-season game.” I get that. But with 8-12 pro bowl caliber players on this year’s team, you have to choose to hate to staynegative on this team. Don’t even go to the garbage about the “team not filling the needs on the offensive line.” Did you miss the part about the “scoringdefense,” if so, then just remember this, turnovers equal short fields and short offensive drives which equals rested, happy “O” linemen.

Last year Warner had to force the ball and Boldin and Fitzgerald had to make big plays every game all year. Everyone in the league knew this. Thisseason Warner and the offense will have their pick of the play selection and the defenses will have to man up on more than one Cardinal and hope theyguessed right. Oh yeah, the offensive line. Let’s start at the top with Leonard Davis; a man that can ruin another mans life in a matter of seconds. He willbecome on of the NFL’s best. Then you have Reggie Wells, Alex Stepanovich, Milford Brown, Deuce Lutui, Jeremy Bridges, Fred Wakefield and injuredOliver Ross. Give these guys 30-40 yard drives after turnovers and they are going to be making reservations for their trip with “Edge” to this seasons ProBowl.

The Scoring for Arizona came on two passes from Warner. One for five yards to Bryant Johnson as he was lined up inside a twin’s right set with Boldinon the outside. Another to Obafemi Ayanbadejo for 15 yards that was capped by a dramatic dive into the pylon in the Northeast corner of the end zone. What made this play so nice was the one handed grab to keep the drive alive by Bryant Johnson for a huge, crowd lifting first down. Diamond Ferri ranone in from five yards out. The beauty of this fourth quarter run into the Southwest end zone was not how he went up and over to score, but how theSteelers corner Deshea Townsend got clowned by Diamond. Townsend came up to make a big hit and instead ended up looking for his helmet as it rolledup the field.

Lest we forget, the last score was set up when the Cards Gerald Hayes made his third quarter interception. Earlier in the game Ernest Shazor made agreat move to get inside a Steeler for an interception that was nullified by a Cards penalty. But the move to get in position was big league stuff. Otherplayers that had notable performances on special teams were kicker Nick Novak and punter Fred Capshaw. Plus safeties Jack Brewer and AaronFrancisco were getting it done on kick coverage. At this point there is no way to tell how the running back spots will fill out. JJ Arrington and MarcelShipp should be the front-runners but Damien Anderson and Diamond Ferri are on par with the others. Could get interesting. If you want to find outabout the Steelers scoring and high lights, well, go the their media. We don’t do the other guy.

After the game Coach Green was actually relaxed and said that he got to play everybody and that was a plus. Yes, he said, they need more running playsbut James was only in for five so they did not get to work on that as much as he would like with his main group. He mentioned the fine efforts byDiamond Ferri, Aaron Francisco and Bryant Johnson. He also said that most of the free agents performed well. He was pleased with the offensive line.He also pointed out that Gerald Hayes played a lot, for two full quarters and the Shazor looked good and would be fine. He thought Calvin Pace lookedsolid and that he saw what he wanted. John Navarre played two and a half quarters and he was good with what he saw from him.

Kurt Warner spoke and was pleased though he would have liked to get James more touches. He was thrilled with Bryant Johnson’s performance andremarked “what a blessing to have a third receiver with his ability.” The full house was exciting, coming out of the tunnel onto the field he could see theyellow Pitt towels, but he could not hear them. What a feeling, he is glad this is his football home. He said the entire team has been unselfish and theytrust each other.

Alex Smith appears to be ready to lead the 49ers, atleast that is what his coach believes. Smith led histeam to a big lead in their 28-14 win over theBears. Smith left the field for good after guiding theteam to a 17-0 lead. Not bad on a team that wasdead last on offense and defense last season.

San Fran’s defense forced two early turnovers thatled to 10 quick points that included a 32 yard TDreturn of a Grossman fumble by Jeff Ulbrich. Therunning for the Niners was mostly Frank Gore with10 carries and making it appear that Kevan Barlowwith one carry may be getting passed by.

The Niners replaced Smith with Palmer and Hill andHill ran for a fourth quarter touchdown.

The Rest of the NFC West

Revelation 5:12 In a loud voice they sang: “Worthy is theLamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth andwisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

The Rams have a new head coach in Scott Linehanand a steady take no risks style of play that led to abalanced 19-17 win over the Colts. The Coltslooking for someone with Super Bowl experiencenow have the Pats former kicker Adam Vinatieri. Hewasted no time making an impression with anonside kick on the opening kickoff, that the Coltsrecovered.

But ball protection ruled as the Rams ran 40 timesand passed 31. The backs Jackson had 41 yardson 5 carries while Fisher picked up 33 and Russellhad a long 54 yard run in the third.

Both teams got their top players off the field early withthe Colts Manning, Harrison and Wayne only in on oneseries. The Rams let Bulger, Holt, Bruce and Jacksonplay for two series. The Rams have Arena Footballkicker Remy Hamilton and he did not dissappoint.

Gus Ferotte was Bulgers back up while Fitzpatrick andRagone are fighting for the number three spot. The Ramstop pick Tye Hill nearly had two picks but did make aspecial teams tackle.

Sleepy Seattle got their beaks busted by Cowboybackup in a 13-3 loss. No, TO did not show. TonyRomo played the entire game as Drew Bledsoewatched.

League MVP Shaun Alexander had six carries for13 yards and he and most of the offense left thegame early in the second quarter. Matt Hasselbackhad 43 yards passing on four completions in sixtries.

The Hawks first team offense, last years top scoringoffense scored 3 points and picked up 56 on 14 plays. The totally honest Holmgren admitted to beingdissappointed in the effort, while Hasselback said “It wasnot us out there.”

Seattle safety Ken Hamlin, recoverd from his street fightskull fracture had his first contact since the October fightwhen he pressured Cowboy rookie Anthony Fasano.Hamlin did say that he was all right and that he washaving fun.

In 2001 Michael Vick of Atlanta was the big man in the NFL draft going number one. Leonard Davis was the true big man of that draft being pickedsecond, right behind Vick. Yep, big news for the big time player from the Texas Longhorns. Until the 2004 season he was a guard. Now of course, heplays left tackle and has started in all 75 games he appeared in for the Cardinals.

During his rookie season he started all 16 games and was part of a line that allowed the second fewest in a 16 game season since 1978 when DanDierdorf played. He started his Texas career as a defensive tackle but finished his last two years playing left tackle for the Longhorns.

He came from a town with a population of just over 1,000 and his high school had fewer than 150. His family was large with 21 half brothers and sistersand his older half brother played in the NFL for the Steelers and Cardinals plus the USFL. He understands the value of family and giving back. He is adonor and a spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation. He and his family give many hours of time and much money to their events. He also hasmentored teenagers from the Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona.

Clearly, this man has a big heart. But what the team needs this season is for him to become their big leader. He will be the anchor on a team that couldeasily win the NFC West and go deep into the playoffs this season.

I spoke with him after the win over the Steelers. He said this about the stadium and crowd; “It was exciting to go out and play in front of this homecrowd.” “Even after people started leaving with the game in hand we had more people in the stands then most games last year. I am glad that they arehere to support us.” “I just want to go out and win games, the linemen as a group, our mentality is different and we are really taking ownership and thatis going to be key.”

I mentioned that running back James plans on a pro bowl year and that he would be a big part of that, the point man, he said; “That’s all good, but we gotto win the games first, the Pro Bowl can’t get us to the playoffs.” From the press box it is clear that the road to the playoffs is being paved by a very goodoffensive line. Running point for that line is one big man. Leonard Davis.

Leonard Davis Leads the Way!

Ohl becomes eighth cowboy to cross $2 million

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following the DodgeCity Roundup in Dodge City, Kan., Cody Ohl was lessthan $900 away from the $2 million mark in careerearnings. The thought of being the eighth cowboy to jointhe illustrious $2 million club was in the back of his mindas he threw the loop on his first calf on Aug. 8 at theSikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo.

That loop pushed him over the $2 million mark ashe finished the run in 8.3 seconds to share the first-roundvictory and pocketed $1,872.

“It feels great, and there is no other feeling likeit,” said Ohl of the $2 million milestone. “It hasn’t beenvery long ago that there was a big deal made about Roy(Cooper) being the first one and now I am there. To bejust the eighth is a great thing and to be part of a groupwith such greatness is a true honor.”

During the month of July, Ohl found his sweetspot, winning close to $40,000. He kept the momentumgoing into August, winning the Dodge City Roundupaverage and checks worth $6,520, which moved him intothe lead in the ProRodeo Cowboys World Standings witha total of $101,901 at 35 rodeos.

Comments from movie fans at the preview showing: Better than Rocky because it was real! Makes mewant to believe I can do great things! FUN! Even my wife enjoyed it and she hates football!!!! Take thewhole family! Amazing! It’s a hit! It’s not about football, it’s about life! I’ll be back!

Reviewed by Dana Lynn:The movie is good… it is take your family to see it good. One viewer described it as a “feel good movie”, butfor the players that watched it was more than that. I was able to attend a special screening of Invincible withtwo fanatic rival football teams and their families. These players are adults that continue to play for the sheerlove of the game, and their families that support and cheer them on, and they saw themselves on that screen.I’m not sure what I enjoyed the most, watching the movie, or listening to the players and their families enjoythe movie.

There is a game in the rain and mud that every player there remembered playing, and their laughter andreactions were hilarious. The silence was just as loud as you watched “Papale” attempt what he knew was animpossible dream, and you knew that every person there identified with their own impossible dream. At theend they did feel so good they burst into spontaneous applause. Afterward, it was interesting to see! the“rival” teams standing around talking and laughing with each other about the movie, and their own games.

You do not have to be a football fan to love this movie. It speaks to anyone who has had life throw them acurve. Or you’ve been told that “you’ll never amount to anything, you’ll never make any money, and you’llnever make a name for yourself’. If any of that sounds familiar, then you need to see this movie.

On my way home I realized that I had a silly grin on my face just thinking about the movie. I called myhusband who is a football fanatic, and a dreamer of the impossible, and told him that we are definitely goingto go see this movie when it comes out. I know he will enjoy it, and I will enjoy watching him as he does.

Disney Preview: From the studio that brought you “The Rookie” and “Remember the Giants” comes INVINCIBLE, inspired by the true story of Vince Papale (MARKWAHLBERG), a man with nothing to lose who ignored the staggering odds and made his dream come true. When the coach (GREG KINNEAR) of Papale’s belovedhometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time—no one good enough to play professional football wasgoing to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papal — a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan’s fantasy – moving from the cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as aprofessional player.

LOOSE CANNONS BLUES BAND, FEATURING MARTIN LUTHERJACKSON APPEARING AT PRESCOTT VALLEY ENTERTAINMENT

DISTRICT FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 2006, 6-9 P.M.

BIO OF LUTHER JACKSON

Mr. Martin Luther Jackson is a vintage blues man in the truest sense of the word, with anauthentic voice that’s rich and earthy, a quality which highlights his unorthodox but consistentguitar style. Luther Jackson is a veteran of the House Of Blues in Los Angeles and performs anenergetic style of Chicago Blues in the style of Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters that lends itself todancing and listening pleasure.

Luther began playing in Chicago blues clubs at the age of 13. Luther is also the brother of JoeJackson, the father of the famous Jackson 5 family. Luther and Joe played blues through the 50’sand early 60’s in their band “The Falcons.” However, Luther and Joe put their musical careers onhold to raise their children. The Verde Valley Coyotes are in the recruiting stage for their second Arizona Football League season. The Coyotes inaugural season started with morestaff than players at their first practice. Instead of being discouraged at the low numbers, owner Scott Laughery knuckled down and worked at gettingword out about the team that he believed could be built from this group of small towns. At their first scrimmage with the Chandler Cowboys, they hadabout fifteen players on their sideline, against the Cowboys forty-five. The field at Sunnyside Park was surrounded by trucks and cars full of peoplecoming out to see what this team was all about. The Cowboys came to work on their game, and left respecting the small group of guys that came to playand brought it to them. The respect must have spread through those watching because the players started coming out to play.

The Coyotes finished their season with over forty players from the Verde Valley, Tri-City area. Their regular season ended with a 5-5 record, and theywon their Division, and placed second in the Sonoran Conference.

Coach Laughery was an official in the AIA for 15 years and has friends at every level of the game. When his daughter Holly and her husband Tim Millerapproached him with a couple other friends about starting a team, he immediately jumped on board. They started a team to play football, and found thatit turned into an extended family. Holly co-owns the team with Scott, Tim is in charge of Player Personnel, and his wife Nancy is in charge of finances. They stress sportsmanship and giving back to the community.

The Coyotes even have a father-son duo on the team. Kevin Soulages and his son Cody played with the Coyotes last season and will both be returningthis year. Kevin has been involved with Youth Football in the Tri-City league for the last four years. He served as a head coach, as assistant coach, adefensive line coach, and offensive line coach. He also volunteers in the YMCA Youth Flag Football League that is partially sponsored by the ArizonaCardinals.

Head Coach and owner Scott Laughery is excited about the upcoming season. Ninety percent of last years players are returning, but there is plenty ofroom for new players in all positions. He has secured Sedona Red Rock High School as their home field for the games that begin in January. Half of thegames will be in Sedona and half in Phoenix.

He has also added to the Coyote coaching staff for the upcoming season. After watching his son Damien play a year with the Coyotes, Jason Wirthenjoyed the team so much he volunteered as the quarterback coach. Jason has coached youth sports since he was 18. He coached high school footballfor four years, ice hockey for 13 years, and played the QB position, as did all his brothers, while in the military. Richard Herrera will be the Defensivecoach for the Coyotes, and they are adding a line coach and offensive coordinator. If you live in the Verde Valley, Sedona, or Tri-City area, and areinterested in playing, call the AzFL at 623-939-4877. You can also visit the Coyotes online at www.azfl.com.

The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have signed a one-year affiliation agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and theSan Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League for the 2006-07 season.

“We’re very excited to reach this agreement with the Phoenix Coyotes,” said RoadRunners President and former Coyotes forward Claude Lemieux. “They are an organization that has always shown a strong dedication to excellence, and we feel that their goals parallel ours. Plus, with the convenienceof being located in the same city, Phoenix hockey fans will now enjoy the pleasure of seeing both the NHL stars of today and tomorrow.”

The RoadRunners will work closely with both the Coyotes and the Rampage in player development. “Today we’ve taken a very positive step in the rightdirection,” said RoadRunners COO and General Manager Ray Delia. “The Phoenix Coyotes are committed to creating organizational depth, and theRoadRunners are pleased to be able to assist them in achieving that goal.”

As part of the agreement, the RoadRunners will be afforded a select number of training camp spots that will allow players to compete on the Coyotes’rookie team at the September rookie tournament in Los Angeles and San Antonio’s training camp in October, and should receive both AHL and NHLprospects over the course of the season. “We look forward to working with the RoadRunners, and see benefits to both organizations from this newrelationship,” said Barnett.
