Two western Kentucky volley- ball teams seemed to have tradi- tion on their side this season. And if tradition, experience and history mean anything, the teams are hoping for more of the same on Friday. Lone Oak, the First Region champion, will play Greenwood at noon Friday in the Kentucky State High School Athletic Association state volleyball tournament at Bellarmine University. Caldwell County, winner of the Second Re- gion, will play Newport Central Catholic at 5 p.m. “I thought we had a shot at be- ing pretty good,” Lone Oak coach Tim Whitis said, “but I didn’t think we would actually be play- ing the way we are right now, and that’s great.” The Purple Flash, which won the regional tournament in 2010, didn’t expect another title after losing nearly its entire varsity ros- ter. Caldwell County, which will be attending the state tournament for the third straight year and four out of the past ve, also lost its core group of starters. “I really don’t think a lot of peo- ple thought we could do it, and I was really glad we were able to do it,” Tigers coach Sue Stone said. “We were ranked pretty high lo- cally, but I don’t believe people really believed it.” Each coach, both Coach of the Year in their region, hopes that even though this year’s starters didn’t get much playing time last year, the atmosphere won’t be much of a distraction. Stone dis- tinctly remembers the program’s rst trip to state and the shell- shocked response. “We’re not that team anymore,” Stone said. “We’ve seen tall, we’ve seen big, we’ve seen fast, we’ve seen hard-hitting, and we have some of that on our own.” Nineteenth ranked Lone Oak (29-8) already has a 2-1 win over 16th ranked Greenwood (24-16) this season. Flash junior libero Sa- mantha Lawson, the only player with signicant varsity experience from last year, says the familiarity helps, especially after playing an unknown quantity in Henry Clay in last year’s opening round loss. “Henry Clay last year, we knew they were good,” Lawson said. “Playing Greenwood, which we’ve already played this year, we know their main hitters, we know what we can do and I think it makes it a lot easier on us, too.” Whitis feels the key to the game will be ball control, and much of that starts with Lawson on the back row and her ability to dig balls and pass to freshman setter Hannah Parker. The Flash, which seem to have unlimited re power in a rotating arsenal of arms, will face two tal- ented outside hitters from Green- wood, and a 6-foot-5 freshman right-side hitter who did not play in the team’s rst meeting. Busch Stadium workers put a tarp on the infield Wednesday in St. Louis after officials announced that Game 6 of the World Series was postponed due to rain. The game will be played today, with Game 7 on Friday if necessary.

ST. LOUIS — Colby Lewis and his Texas teammates casually tossed a ball in left fi eld, trying to avoid the tarp and any anxiety about being so close to the World Series championship.

On this day, the only winner was the weather.

Game 6 was postponed Wednesday because of an accu-rate wet forecast, delaying the Rangers’ bid to clinch their fi rst championship. Ahead 3-2, they can close out the St. Louis Cardi-nals on Thursday night. It’s likely

“I don’t know if she’s going to hit the ball hard,” Whitis said, “but she’s going to be huge on the block, so we’re going to have to be able to hit around that.”

Newport Central Catholic (23-6), ranked 13th in the state, is a formidable opponent for the Tigers (29-7), which will be the de-cided underdog.

“They’re in that loop of private schools that have a legendary history and that part is stacked against us and we can’t change that,” Stone said. “And we’re OK with that. We’d like to go up there and mix it up and come back with lessons learned. If we give it all we’ve got and leave it on the fl oor, we’re happy with that.”

The Tigers are playing their best vol-leyball at the best time behind Region 2 Player of the Year junior Jessie Stone and got career games from middle hitter Cassie Yates and defensive players Erin Harper and Shelby Meredith in the regional cham-pionship. Setter Carlyn Williams also add-ed a solid game to the peaking seniors.

“If you’re the underdog, everybody has to show up at the same time in order to beat a team you’re not supposed to beat,” Stone said.

Area earthquake left the Athletics and Giants idle for 11 days.

“It’s just a rainout, that’s it,” Texas star Michael Young said. “I don’t know if people think we’re going to sit in our hotel rooms all night biting our nails. We’re going to get something to eat, get some rest and be ready to go.”

After a damp season and postseason, Major League Baseball announced the decision about 4½ hours before the scheduled fi rst pitch. At the time, no drops had fallen at the ballpark.

“I’m not even sure why they canceled it,” Cardinals outfi elder Lance Berkman

said. “This is better than the weather for Game 1. I guess I’m going to lie back on the couch like a big, fat pig and watch a movie.”

Maybe Berkman could’ve joined La Russa. The Cardi-nals manager planned to go see “Moneyball.”

By late afternoon, a light mist turned to drizzle and then to steady rain. More showers were on the way throughout the night.

This was the fi rst Se-ries washout since 2008 at Philadelphia. That year, Tampa Bay and the Phil-lies were tied in the sixth inning when rain and snow turned the fi eld into a quag-mire, forcing a suspension. It rained the next day, too, and the game fi nally re-

sumed two days later, with the Phillies winning to take the crown.

Because of the debate about how to handle that situation MLB adopted a rule a few months later mandating that any post-season game stopped in progress would be resumed at the point of suspension, rather than being post-poned and starting over.

This marked the latest rainout at a Series since 1986, when Game 7 be-tween the Red Sox and Mets was pushed back by a day.

During the AL champion-ship series, a game between Detroit and the Rangers in Texas was called because of a predicted storm that nev-er arrived.

played each other in the double round-robin format, giving teams games with an opponent at both the home and away venues.

The decision was put into place with the addition of SIU-Edwardsville, which is making the transition to a full Division I member of the conference. The Cougars are eligible to compete for a regular season OVC title, but not an OVC or NCAA tour-nament postseason.

Offi cials believed sched-uling a 20-game conference season made it harder for teams to schedule quality non-conference opponents. The goal, according to the OVC, is to increase team RPI and play fewer, if any, con-ference games in December.

A team will play six of the 10 other schools twice while playing four just once. His-torical and traditional ri-valries were considered in the scheduling, as well as proximity of schools that would play twice. This sea-son, Murray State will play Morehead State and East-ern Kentucky only once on each the men’s and the women’s side.

Also new to the sea-son are game dates. The conference mostly played doubleheaders with the men’s games following the women’s games, typically playing Thursdays and Sat-urdays. The women’s teams will now play Saturdays and Mondays.

The thought is that the change will help the wom-en’s programs develop in-dependently while helping

foster its fan base, which is often different from that of the men’s programs. Racer women’s basketball coach Rob Cross has mixed feel-ings on the move.

“I think it will be exciting for our student athletes to be the focal point on Mon-day nights,” Cross said, “in-stead of fans fi ling in and trying to fi nd their seats and trying to get snacks before the men’s game starts.”

Cross believes some ca-maraderie between his women’s program and the men’s program will be lost; he said his players truly enjoy watching the men’s

game after their own, and said the men’s players feel the same.

While starting the wom-en’s games near 5 p.m. usually meant stands were quite bare until after half-time, Cross felt sharing the several thousand fans with the men’s team by the end of the women’s game wasn’t such a bad thing. The fear is without the men’s teams to draw fans, arenas could be rather quiet.

“It’s not just Ohio Valley Conference women’s bas-ketball, it’s the same thing in the SEC, the Big 12, the Big East, everywhere, except for a handful of schools,” Cross said, “and that’s just the re-ality of sports. You watch the WNBA championship is played in front of an empty arena pretty much.

“Perhaps down the road we’re moving in a direc-tion that can change that, but it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s going to be an ongoing process, and we

have to do whatever we can to help promote the game.”

Future scheduling is still up in the air thanks to the 2012 arrival of Belmont to the conference, which means the league will in-clude 12 teams for the fi rst time in OVC history.

“We are in the process right now of getting ready for Belmont joining the league next year while we have this schedule,” OVC commissioner Beth De-Bauche said. “We need to work through some addi-tional scheduling issues, and we are talking with our presidents and ADs about the possibility of divisions within this league. Much work still needs to be done and we hope to report back on that shortly.”

Jones’ 52 points tops UK scrimmage record

Terrence Jones scored 52 points on 24-of-31 shoot-ing and added 16 rebounds and six assists in the Uni-versity of Kentucky’s Blue-White basketball scrimmage at Lexington’s Rupp Arena on Wednesday. Eight play-ers scored in double figures before a crowd of 12,124 as the Blue wont 126-104.

Jones scored the most points in a Blue-White scrim-mage since Brandon Knight’s 27 points last season. Doron Lamb scored 31 points on 14-of-27 shooting with five rebounds and five assists.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added 21 points and 10 re-bounds with Eloy Vargas grabbing 16 rebounds for the Blue squad. Anthony Davis had 27 points and 13 re-bounds for the White team with Kyle Wiltjer netting 27 points, with 5-of-8 three-pointers, and 11 rebounds.

Kentucky plays its next preseason game against Transylvania at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Rupp Arena.

Louisville rolls over Pikeville

Chane Behanan scored 16 points with seven re-bounds as the University of Louisville won its exhibi-tion opener 74-55 over Pikeville on Wednesday at Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center.

Dieng Gorgui had a double-double for the Cardinals with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Chris Smith, who hit 3-of-3 three-pointers, added 13 points. Louisville took a 39-28 lead in the first half.

Louisville talks with Big 12 about move

The Big 12 is still deciding: West Virginia or Louis-ville? Could be one or the other, or maybe neither.

Conference realignment took a strange turn Wednesday when, a day after it appeared that the Big 12 had decided West Virginia would eventually replace Missouri as the league’s 10th member, the Mountain-eers’ Big East rival Louisville re-entered the picture.

A person with knowledge of the Big 12’s discus-sions told The Associated Press that no decision was made by the conference to add West Virginia, and that Louisville is still a candidate to be invited to join.

The source added that a decision about expansion is not expected before next week.

Hilltoppers remain in Sun Belt contention

BOWLING GREEN— Western Kentucky could win the Sun Belt title, something that seemed highly unlikely after the Hilltoppers began the season 0-4.

But coach Willie Taggart said his players didn’t give up after the setbacks.

“The way we started out the season you think, ‘Oh, here we go again,’” Taggart said. “But our guys kept believing and they stayed the course.”

WKU (3-4, 3-1 Sun Belt) knocked off Middle Tennes-see and Florida Atlantic on consecutive weeks and then last Saturday snapped an 18-game home losing streak with its win over Louisiana-Lafayette.

Suddenly, the Hilltoppers are Sun Belt Champion-ship contenders. They’re a game behind Arkansas State in the conference standings and tied in the loss column with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

They play Saturday at Louisiana-Monroe (2-5, 1-2).

NBA owners, players meet for over 11 hours

NEW YORK — NBA owners and players were en-gaged in another marathon session Wednesday, meet-ing for more than 11 hours in talks aimed at ending the lockout. The two sides got back to the table with a small group meeting less than a week after three intense days of mediation didn’t produce a new labor deal. Stern rejoined the talks Wednesday after miss-ing last Thursday’s session. The union was represent-ed by executive director Billy Hunter, president Derek Fisher and vice president Maurice Evans.

“I think it will be exciting for our

student athletes to be the focal point

on Monday nights.”

NEW YORK — Stocks closed higher fol-lowing reports that China will come to the aid of Europe by investing in a financial res-cue fund.

Agence France-Presse reported that Chi-na will invest in Europe’s financial rescue program. The fund will be used to support struggling countries in the European Union.

Stocks were mixed before the report Wednesday as investors weighed higher earnings from Boeing and Corning with con-tinued uncertainty about the outcome of Europe’s debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 162 points, or 1.4 percent, to 11,869. The S&P 500 gained 13, or 1.1 percent, to 1,242. The Nasdaq rose 13, or 0.5 percent, to 2,651.

Volume was slightly above average at 4.8 billion shares.

WASHINGTON — Sales of new homes rose in September after four straight monthly declines, largely because builders cut their prices in the face of depressed demand.

Analysts say the modest increase on the back of reduced prices sug-gests the struggling housing market is years away from a turnaround.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales increased 5.7 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 313,000 homes.

Still, sales rose after hitting a six-month low in August. And the annual pace remains less than half the 700,000 that economists say must be sold to sustain a healthy housing market.

A big reason for the gain was that the median sales price fell 3.1 per-cent to $204,400 — the lowest since October 2010. The number of new homes on the market was also un-changed at 163,000, a record low.

“Numbers show that while the housing market still has a pulse, it will not be back on its feet until there is signifi cant job growth,” said Mitchell Hochberg, principal of Madden Real Estate Ventures in New York.

While new homes represent less than one-fi fth of the housing mar-ket, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built cre-ates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in taxes, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
