Colourblind explores the relationship between dreamers and realists, within ourselves and others. Dreamers need realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun and without the dreamers, realists might not ever get off the ground.

Mathematics

Year 7 Mathematics Year 7 are busy mastering Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. In these photos, they are

arranging themselves in a fraction, decimal and percentage on number lines, and then finding

equivalent partners. Remember, there is a thin line between a numerator and a denominator but only a

fraction will understand.

Year 8 Mathematics Year 8 just completed a challenging end of topic test with tried and true problems presented in an unfa-miliar format. Try sharpening your pencil and testing your skills with these for fun.

A parent heading home leaves work at 6:00pm travelling at 80km/hr. What time will they arrive home if they have to travel 180km? Mr Walton and Mr Ursino share a winning lotto ticket in the ratio of 2:3. If they won $2.2 million how much do they each win?

Mr Ursino Mathematics Year 11 Mathematics MAGC2

This term, Year 11 have been working through a Mathematics and Driving focus study. The students have learnt many facets involved in purchasing a motor vehicle, which include, the cost of purchase, cost of repayments, the total amount repaid on a loan, and the different types of motor vehicle insurance.

The Year 11 students have also calculated the fuel consumptions of various car models, identified

running costs and also calculated and interpreted blood alcohol content of individuals and compared

them to the legal blood alcohol limits of drivers in New South Wales. The students have compiled and

shown their knowledge through an assessment task used for their Preliminary Course outcomes.

Year 12 General Mathematics 2 class have been working hard preparing for their Trial HSC Examinations in Week 10. They have been looking at body measurements, collecting and interpreting data related to the length of their bones and comparing it to Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Vitruvian Man”. Next term they will be working on an assessment task and investigating Resources and Mathematics.

Year 12 VET Information and Digital Technology have been completing an assessment task where they

have been creating a website. They have also been using digital imaging applications to create and edit

images for their website. Their final unit of work will be using social media tools for Collaboration and

Environmentally Sustainable Work Practices.

Just Clowding Around - Year 9 Mathematics with Mrs Sammut

9W are working in the CLOWD room - Collaborative Learners, Occupants Working Dynamically. After a very busy week of Semester One Examinations, students completed a collaborative whiteboard activity. To finalise their unit on Numbers of any Magnitude, 9W undertook an informal topic assessment, using the whiteboards. The class was actively engaged and demonstrated a high level of maturity and responsibility for their own learning. It was a pleasure to see 9W students attempt and support one another with problems that they would normally try to avoid. With the more challenging of questions, the students persisted. They were determined and finally delighted, when they completed and conquered!

Student engagement and productivity in Mathematics has significantly increased since the induction of

the CLOWD classroom late last year. 9W particularly, have had an increased enthusiasm for

Mathematics and a willingness to participate. Any struggling learners happily collaborate with one

another and will often learn from their peers. Communication amongst the student groups, and within

the whole classroom, has also increased significantly.

Mathematics - Clowding with Mrs Hood

Over the last seven weeks, my Year 12 Mathematics class have been working in the CLOWD room. The students have been working on past HSC examinations. Students are deconstructing the questions by looking at the key words, then they look at the skills and processes required to complete the question. Once they have completed the question, the students look at the marking guidelines to assist them with their understanding of how the questions are marked. The class have also looked at multiple-choice questions as these are treated like a normal question in Mathematics where the students are still required to go through the working out process to arrive at the answer. The class have enjoyed using the CLOWD room and I have found this to be a valuable teaching tool to use with HSC revision.

Year 10 Taster lesson of Preliminary Mathematics Recently, all Year 10 experienced a “taster” lesson of some of the content covered in Year 11 Preliminary Mathematics. There are 3 different courses offered in Year 11 - Standard Mathematics (the new Stage 6 course starting in 2018 to replace the General course), Mathematics and Extension 1 Mathematics. Mrs Lowis and the students who had chosen Preliminary Mathematics investigated “The Locus”. This outside activity involved students considering the path of a point given specific conditions. Students were given a variety of problems and collaboratively worked together to show the shape of the locus using cones.

They were then able to apply this practical knowledge to theoretical problems back in the classroom.

Students said they enjoyed the experience as it gave them a better understanding of what to expect

next year.

Real Life Mathematics for Year 12 Year 12 General 1 Mathematicians undertook a school water audit of the school at the end of May as part of their topic “Household and Personal Resources”. This looked at water management and strategies on how to save water. Students had to locate the school water meter (in a locked shed near Thirroul Rd entry) and whether there were any leaking taps or problems with the toilets. Readings were collected over a 9 day period. Below is the data collected and their conclusions:

Dates: 26.5.17 until 5.6.17 Total used : 9261kL

Discussion questions raised by the class group

a) How does the water consumption differ from school time and non-school time, overnight and the weekends? The average for school usage is 561kL whilst after-school usage is 551 kL. The weekend usage was 2739kL and 951kL.

Reasons: Cleaners washing down the school – suggestion was use of high pressure cleaners may result in less water. Solutions: Look at a more economical toilet system, i.e. dual flush, Costings: Would they be worth it?

b) What times saw the Most and the Least amounts of water being used? Most: First weekend - maybe still a leaking pipe and Friday – maybe it was an incorrect reading? Least: Mondays and Thursdays.

The students investigated water as a worldwide issue too and learnt about sustainable housing.

Celebrating Perfect Petz

How quickly did this semester go! On Friday 23 June, students in Year 7 Perfect Petz successfully completed their Interest Elective Course. Parents, family and friends came to see them receive their certificates from Ms Toohey.

They also had the opportunity to practise the agility skills with Seven & B’Elanna. All the students said they had really enjoyed the interest elective. Below are some of the comments:

”I liked Perfect Petz so much, you guys should choose it”. - Takira L

“Perfect Petz is such an inspiration. There are a variety of activities to do like making dog toys and dog treats, going to the pet shop and McDonalds and RSPCA. Hopefully, it will run next year in Year 8.” – Kayla H

“Perfect Petz has greatly improved my attitude and love of dogs, for I’ve never really been a dog person. I give Perfect Petz a perfect score of 5/5”– Kayne C

Sport Update { As you can see we have had another busy term with Sport at Kanahooka High School. We have a strong sporting talent here at Kanahooka and are pleased to see such a large number of our students both participate in and experience success across a range of sporting events and activities. In recent events, we have had our Zone Cross Country Carnival, Zone Athletics Carnival, multiple Netball Carnivals, Volleyball Knockout Carnivals, Premier Sporting Challenge (where our students have the opportunity to coach primary students). Students have attended Hayes Park Public School to act as officials for their Mini-Olympics Carnival. They have attended as CHS Carnival Representatives, been on bubble soccer excursions and trips to Dapto Citizens Club's new turf soccer fields. We also hosted a Koori Knockout Carnival and we were even lucky enough to witness some teachers in action in a game of touch football, (rumour has it Mr Rostron gave away an intercept at a crucial point in the game, allowing the students to score the winning try!) In other news, next term with the changes occurring in the PDHPE Faculty, Mr Jardine will be stepping into the role of Head Teacher, meaning Mr Sartori will be our new Sport's Organiser, working alongside Mr Nunn. Miss Dean Head Teacher PDHPE Recreational Sport

This term we have offered a range of recreational activities for students to participate in on Thursday afternoons, including; Fishing, Walking, Boys Fitness, Girls Fitness, School Activities and Anytime Fitness. The feedback from the students has been great with a number indicating their desire to continue participating into next term. Whether they have been at school or out in the community, our students have represented Kanahooka High School with pride and are always on their best behaviour. Thank you to the teachers who have supervised all sports this term, your help now and in the future is greatly appreciated. Regional Cross Country In Week 6, a group of Kanahooka High School students travelled to Nowra to participate in the Regional Cross Country Championships. On an extremely tough course, our competitors achieved some excellent results and represented the school with pride. Special mention goes to Aidan H (under 13's Boys) and Isaiah V (18/s Boys, Para Athlete) who progressed to the State Championships, an amazing achievement for both boys. The KHS Zone Cross Country Team was; Jasmin M, Isaiah V, Rachel H, Cate M, Aidan H and Cerise M.

Zone Athletics Carnival

On Monday 19 June, a group of students from Kanahooka High School attended the Zone Athletics Carnival at Croome Road Sporting Complex, Albion Park. The day turned out to be a great day for the carnival, with perfect sunny conditions allowing for an excellent day of athletic competition. All Kanahooka students who attended were great representatives of the school, displaying great sportsmanship and exemplary behaviour. Throughout the day there were also a small group of Kanahooka students who took time out of their day to assist teachers with the organisation and running of events. A big thank you to those students who helped out, as without your support, the day wouldn't have run as smoothly as it did. Congratulations to the following students who have qualified to compete at the State Athletics Championships in Canberra on Friday August 4: Zane P, Bailey H, Andrew L, Simon O, Jake C, Brittney W, Amielle C, Kiersten G, Chloe W, Naomi G, Jessica B.

Technology

Technology What is 3D printing? Definition: the action or process of making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession (Google).

What is 3D printing used for? Prototyping, and rapid manufacturing. So companies can make small quantities for once off items, without the costs of setting up massive manufacturing hardware.

How do we design parts to 3D print? There are various different ways to design parts and prototypes CAD (Computer Aided Design) can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Our students are using a web based CAD program called tinkercad.com

This item pictured below is a bracket for an electric drum kit to replace a broken part, designed with tinkercad.com by Mr Harding.

Students can create their own account on tinkercad.com and create their own designs at home. Once created, the file can be exported to the Makerbot software program, which will configure step by

step instructions for the 3D printer to print layer by layer.

Please speak to Mr Harding for more information if you are interested in 3D Printing.

Here is the finished product ready to be used.

Arduino Full Steam Ahead {code.learn (you);}

What a fun 5 weeks of coding we have had in the Library! Fourteen students from Years 7 and 8 participated in a 5 week course - learning to code with Ardino and Thinkershield. Students were playing and learning right away, and experienced the exciting world of coding, electronics and computer control open to anyone with a computer and USB. They made things bip, bleep, buzz and flicker using simple programming language.

Special thanks to our Careers Adviser, Ms Phelan, and the Museum of Applied Arts and Science for this opportunity. I also put to good use my troubleshooting skills to assist in this course. Any students who wish to continue their coding journey, are welcome to join us in the After School Tutorial on Tuesdays next term.

News from the Office

At the beginning of Term 3 the bike compound will be moved from the front of the school to the red brick wall near the Canteen. Students will need to bring to school their own lock for their bike/scooter as it will not be in a gated area. Please remember that we will be transitioning to the new NSW Public Schools finance system at the start of Term 3. We will not be able to receipt money from 30 June and for the first few weeks of Term 3 including online payments and EFTPOS. This means if you are purchasing uniforms from the Canteen it can only be a cash payment. We will advise you when we can start receipting. This also means there will be no SMS’s for absences until further notice. Thank you for being patient and understanding. A garden has been installed at the front of the school this term and we had painting completed at the Canteen.

There will be circus, disco, big bands, tap, rock, ballet, pop, drama, folk, orchestra, an Indigenous dance company, and musical theatre to name just a few.

Approximately 3,000 public school students from around southern NSW will take part in the two hour arena style show that will feature classics like Nutbush and In the Ghetto to contemporary numbers like Geronimo and Can’t Stop This Feeling.

As in past years, community support of Southern Stars is vital to ensure its success, and the easiest way of showing your support is by attending one of the four blockbuster shows.

It doesn’t matter if you know anyone performing in the show or not – Southern Stars is a high energy spectacle which provides great entertainment for people of all ages. The talent, energy and enthusiasm of our students is something not to be missed!

Over 12,000 people are expected to attend the four performances at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Friday August 25 (10am and 7pm) and Saturday August 26 (2pm and 7pm) - make sure you are one of them.
