HSSM Supports Breast Cancer Awareness

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MAGAZINE September 20117

At the age of 33, Susan Goodman Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer . Three years later, she died at the age of 36 in 1980, with no cure or ways to fight this disease. Komen’s younger sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker felt that a cure should have been found and wanted patients who were struck with this type of cancer would live to survive. So she promised her sister that she would fight this to the end. Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in her sister’s memory in 1982. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the organization, it changed its name to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and a new logo running in “pink” emerged. It was the Race for the Cure! The new logo symbolically associates the organization with the values of the pink ribbon culture: fear of breast cancer, hope, and the charitable good-ness of people and businesses who publicly support the breast cancer movement. Today, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the world’s largest fund-raising event for breast cancer. It consists of a series of 5K runs and fit-ness walks to raise money to for breast cancer, to raise awareness of the disease, to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer, and memorial-ize those who have not.The first race was run in Dallas, Texas in 1983, with 800 participants. The

25th Anniversary of the Race was celebrated in 2008. In 2009, it was renamed as Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure. In 2010, there were about 130 races worldwide. Since its foundation in 1982, Komen has provided funding for basic, clinical, and translational breast cancer research and for innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screen-ing and treatment. The organizations has awarded more than 1,000 breast cancer research grants totaling more than $180 million. I have met only one person who has experienced this fight. She was an ath-lete who played for Central Catholic High School in Canton, Ohio. Lou Ann Sarachene loved sports. She played basketball, volleyball, and also ran track. After graduating from Central, she went on to gradu-ate from Kent State and also received her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She did have a passion for students. So she became a school teacher, a coach, an assistant principal, and now, a principal in 2008. For those who know Lou Ann, like myself, we can attest to the fact that “you can make it a great day or not, the choice is yours.” Those are her words of wisdom she shares with her students everyday at Dr. Perez El-ementary in McAllen, Texas.

In May 2009, tragedy struck the vibrant principal. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40. But, she kept working, getting the smiles and support from her students, staff, and parents. “I knew there was something wrong with my body,” she says. Throughout this ordeal, it was a struggle. She had to have a double-mastectomy. Today, No cure has been found for breast cancer but, it’s her smiles that has touched me everyday. But, most of all, it’s her smiles that have inspired my two children that attend Dr. Perez Elementary. When you see high school athletes and coaches wearing PINK while they play, show your support too, by doing the same. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, wear PINK and show your love for the women we LOVE. Together, we can win the fight against breast cancer.

Let’s Find a Cure. Wear PINK.

I’m An Athlete.I’m A SURVIVOR.

A true story about an athlete and principal,Lou Ann Sarachene and her struggles with breast cancer.

“Ilove sports! I’m a big fan of the game, especially, football,” says Lou Ann Sarachene, principal at Dr. Perez Elementary School in McAl-len, Texas. “I am a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I love the NFL and I am a survivor.” Anyone who lives in Canton, Ohio, home of the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame, must love football. After all, there is plenty of football history and for Sarachene, she just loves the game. “Every year my Dad would take us to the induction ceremony and parade. I got to see O.J. Simpson, Mean Joe Green, Troy Aikman, and Terry Bradshaw,” she adds. “Their speeches were inspiring.” A daughter of strict Catholic parents, she spent 12 years in Catholic school, and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Canton. Sarachene was an avid athlete playing basketball, softball, and running track. She was a standout athlete too. And a good one. In basketball, she averaged ten points a game with 12 assists per game during her senior year. “I had this passion for basketball. I was always looking for a game. I loved basketball,” says Sarachene. She went on to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kent State and started coaching basketball in Ohio and Texas. Fifteen years ago, teaching positions were limited in Ohio at that time so Sarachene googled for jobs elsewhere. That’s when opportunity came knocking and landed her a teaching position with Rio Grande City CISD in La Grulla. After obtaining her Master’s Degree in Guid-

ance and Counseling, she later became a counselor with Donna ISD for five years. “I had the opportunity to come back to McAllen ISD and became an assistant principal at McHi,” says the Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Now, she has been the principal for the past four years at Dr. Perez Elementary and that’s when her life changed completely. After experiencing a discomfort with her breast, during a six-month span, Sarachene kept going back and forth with her doctors and no signs of cancer showed. Then, on May 28, 2009 tragedy struck the vibrant principal, who was only 40 years old. “I always went for my yearly exami-nations and then it happened. I was diagnosed with the highest stage level of breast cancer,” says Sarachene. “I cried for fifteen minutes. In my heart, I felt that this was not the end for me. I still have more to do and more lives to inspire and touch with the students I serve,” she added. Throughout this ordeal, it was a struggle. She had to have a double-mastectomy one month later. Today, it’s her smiles that has touched many who know her. But, most of all, the children that attend Dr. Perez Elementary. “It’s not easy losing a body part. When I woke up after the operation the first thought I had was...I’m alive,” said Sarachene. With a sigh of relief and smile, Sarachene hopes that one day a cure will be found for breast cancer. But for now, her life con-tinues and reminds her students every morning to “make it a great day or not. The choice is yours.”

Brother.My Big

McAllen Memorial athlete, Madeline KaufmannLoves Football. Deals with family breast cancer; But most of all, She Loves Her Brother, Matthew.

By David A. Amador, HSSM Sports Director

“Madeline Kaufmann

McAllen Memorial quarterback, Matthew Kaufmann looks for his sister, Maddie on the sidelines on football Friday nights when things just don’t seemed to go right. He also knows that he can depend on her words of support too. You see, his sister, a multi-sport athlete who plays volleyball, basketball and runs track, but most of all, the junior loves football. She is the stats person. Since the seventh grade, she has been on the sidelines, following her brother and the team, writing down every play and follows every move her team makes during games. She knows exactly how every player performs on offense. “When I was younger, I always played football with my cousins, I was the only girl too. I did not like Barbie dolls,” says the Student Council representative of McAllen Memorial High School. She recalls how her brother dealt

with being the starting quarterback as a freshmen for the Mustangs. “It was tough for Matthew because he would get criticized because players did not want to give him a chance to show what he could do,” says Maddie. “I was there to always support Matthew.” As a family, her Dad is a coach for the Me-morial Mustangs. “The only topic we discussed at the dinning table was football. I think I know the plays better than the play-ers themselves,” she laughs. When asked about how she feels about breast cancer. She pauses and her tone of voice changes. “It’s terrible. My Grandma died from breast cancer, and now my Dad’s mom has been re-diagnosed with breast cancer this past month. It’s been real hard on my Dad. In our family roots, all the women have had breast cancer,” says Madeline. “This is my favorite month. I hope someday that a cure will be found for breast cancer.” In the end, Madeline proudly hugs her big

brother and adds that one day, she hopes that she will be-come a football coach, like her Dad and who knows, maybe she and Matthew will be coach-ing together one day. “Hopefully, I’ll be a football coach someday,” says Madeline. “But, I do have Justin Bieber fever.”

with Mario Reyna, Interim McAllen ISD Athletic DirectorReyna understands what it feels like to lose someone to breast cancer. He lost his Mom several years ago too.

Reyna talks about his new opportunity and the challenges that he faces as the interim athletic director.

HSSM: Why do you wear pink?Reyna: It honors my mother. I want to someday and hope that a cure for breast cancer will be found. A few years ago, I had to deal with this...(pauses) I lost my mother to the deadly disease.HSSM: How many other women do you know that have dealt with breast can-cer?Reyna: Quite a few over the years. It’s not an easy ordeal for women. It’s quite chal-lenging.HSSM: Do you think a cure will ever be found?Reyna: I hope so. That’s all

you can do, is hope.HSSM: What are the new challenges that you have faced so far as being the interim athletic director for McAllen ISD?Reyna: So far, it’s been re-warding. The athletic coordi-nators understand that my passion is about the student/athletes. They come first and we must make a difference with how we treat our play-ers on a daily basis.HSSM: Let’s talk about TASO. You have been an official since 1977. What has been your biggest moment in sports officiating?Reyna: Wow, now that’s a

good question. I have had the pleasure of officiating several UIL state semifinal basketball games and prob-ably the most memorable one was being the game um-pire at the 1993-94 UIL State Baseball Tournament. I was also the second base umpire in the 1994 Class 5A Baseball finals too.HSSM: Has officiating been a rewarding experience?Reyna: Definitely. I have met a lot of coaches in my lifetime and watching these high school players perform has been my greatest honor. HSSM: At 5’5, you played basketball for PSJA?

Reyna: Yes. I was also named the Co-MVP of the team too. I love basketball. Even now, I feel that I can play.HSSM: One on one? Reyna: Sure. I still got game.HSSM: In 1997, you were voted McAllen ISD Elemen-tary District Teacher of the Year, and now, the RGV Hall of Fame has nominated you for induction in 2011.Reyna: It would be a great honor to be inducted as an official. HSSM: What do you envision as athletic director for MISD?Reyna: That’s a simple answer. To be the best in all sports, second to none.

From the wildcat position, Abilene RB Paxton Grayer bobbled the ball, regained control, and then stretched out for every inch towards the goal line but Harlingen Cardinal (3-0) defensive player Tadeo Rodri-guez tackled Grayer head on, at the goal line and held on, in double-over-time, as the Harlingen Cardinals pre-served a thrilling 45-44 win. “This is what football is all about. It’s down to

the wire. It’s about playing four quar-ters of tough football,” said a jubilant Cardinal head football coach Manny Gomez. Just when the Cardinals thought that they were going to wrap up the game, after WR Charlie Powers scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ledes-ma, now ahead 38-22 with 3:09 left to play in the game, the Eagles came alive. Eagles QB Evin Abbe (6’2, 200lbs) led his team on two scoring drives, with RB Grayer scoring the last two touchdowns on runs of 11 and 29-yards to tie the game and send it into overtime. “I thought that the Eagles were a great team. We came here to win and make a statement,” said Cards quarterback Kevin Ledesma. In the first overtime, the Harlingen defense forced Abilene to turnover the ball on downs and the Eagles did the same to the Cardinals by blocking a field goal attempt from 40-yards. In the second overtime, Ledesma hit WR Powers again, this time on a 23-yard pass to make it 45-38. This made up for the nerves Ledesma experienced in the first half with two early inter-ceptions which led to two touchdowns for the Eagles. “I was nervous at first. Then I realized that we can play this type of football,” added Ledesma. He completed 28-of-41 passes for 340 yards, four touchdown passes, and two interceptions for the night. In all, the Cards burned the Eagles for 531 total yards. Cards running

back Brian Blake rushed for 113 yards and two scores along with WR Randy Bermea busting the Eagle secondary for 11 catches and 114 yards, includ-ing a 86-yard kickoff return to the Eagles 13-yard line. Blake would take it in for the score at the half to trail 24-22 at the half. “We started believ-ing that we could beat Abilene and so we started playing Cardinal football,” said Bermea. In double-overtime, the Cards defense was penalized for a personal foul after the extra point at-tempt by Abilene, which tied the game

at 45-45, but Eagles head coach Steve Warren felt the temptations of having the ball inside the one-yard line, so he decided to erase the extra point and go for two points instead. The Eagles blocked three extra point attempts by the Cardinals and racked up 528 yards on offense too. Since the win, the Cardinals have posted wins against Edinburg and Har-lingen South in District 31-5A to stay 2-0, with hopes of a fourth consecutive district title. “We want to win state. That’s our team’s goal. We believe that

we can do it too,” says Ledesma.

McAllen Memorial Improves to 5-0, 2-0

Mustang Defense Riding High(McAllen, Texas)-How about them McAllen Memorial Mustangs (5-0, 2-0)! Last season’s State 5A Division II Regional finalists defeated McAllen (2-2, 0-1) 51-38 in their 30-5A district opener to remain perfect for the season. Mustang senior QB Matthew Kaufmann rushed 33 times for 276 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team to a wild win over the Bulldogs. In all, the Mustangs rushed for 528 yards on 66 carries and passed for another 102 yards to beat McHi for the second straight season. “This is what rivalries are all about. I’m proud of our defense. I’m proud of our offense. I’m proud of our coaches,” says Memorial head coach Bill Littleton. McAllen head coach Tony Harris had no comment. In the fourth quarter, Memorial RB Gabe Alonzo blasted his way into the endzone on a 10-yard

run and Kaufmann would seal the victory with a one-yard run with 2:19 left to play in the game. Alonzo finished the night with 12 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns while E.J. Aguilera added another 102 yards on the ground with two scores for the Mustangs. Against the Mission Eagles, the Mustangs defense held the Eagles, winning 41-14 (2-3, 0-2) at Tom Landry Stadium last Friday night. Next up, the La Joya Coyotes (1-4, 0-2) followed by Sharyland (5-0, 2-0) on October 14th in Mission. This game should decide the front-runner in 30-5A. The Rattlers are the two-time defending champions and defeated the Mustangs in 2010, 48-9. “We want to beat the Rattlers in 2011”, says senior quarterback Matthew Kaufmann. “It will be a great game.”

No where to run! The McAllen Memorial Mustang defense stopped Edinburg Economedes (0-5, 0-2), allowing just six points, winning 42-6. The Mustangs will meet Sharyland on October 14th for a 30-5A showdown. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

What a moment. Sharyland kicker Joey Martinez kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired to give the Rattlers a 17-15 win over the Donna Redskins in District 30-5A. Martinez is mobbed by his teammates as the kick is good. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

Farmers Insurance Game of the Week

Joey Martinez Kicks Winning Field Goal As Time Expires(Sharyland, Texas)-In the Farmers Insurance Game of the Week, just when the Donna Redskins (4-1, 1-1) thought they just might have knocked off the two-time defending 30-5A champions, Sharyland Rattlers (5-0, 2-0) after Donna QB Ryan Fonseca scrambled to find WR Darion Hernandez in the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 15-14. The problem: The clock still showed :19 seconds left to play. Rattler head coach Fred Sanchez went to work and took advan-tage of the Redskin kickoff that went out of bounds, to take over at their own 35-yard line. Two quick passes to WR C.J. Cavazos put the Rattlers in range for the game-winning 49-yard field goal by Joey Martinez as time expired, shocking the Redskins 17-15. “This was the best game I have ever coached in and we never stopped fight-ing until the end. The Redskins have nothing to be ashamed of, my hats off to the Donna and their staff,” said San-chez. The Redskins scored two touch-downs in the fourth period after trailing 14-3 and on each score, they went for two points and missed. Had the Red-

skins converted the extra points instead, the game would have been tied at 17-17. The Rattlers gave spark to the Redskins when QB Tres Barrera fumbled the ball with 8:12 left in the fourth quarter and Donna would return it to midfield. A few plays later, Fonseca broke loose up the middle for a 26-yard touchdown run to make it 14-9. Redskin head coach Manny Moreno decided it was the right time to go for the two point conversion but the Sharyland defense made sure the attempt would fail. On the Rattlers next drive, a bad snap over the head of Bar-rera put the ball at their own 48-yard line, facing 2nd and 22 yards for a first down with 4:55 left to play. The Donna defense sacked Barerra on the next play, forcing the Rattlers to punt with 3:51 left in the game. Fonseca took over and led the Redskins, to what seemed, the game winning score with :19 seconds left to play. “I was not thinking about missing the kick. This was it and I knew that I had to make it,” said Martinez after connecting on the game winning field goal. “Special teams made it happen it tonight,” said Sanchez. Donna RB Eduardo Fraire rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries. The Rattlers will play a tough two-game schedule, beginning this Friday night at La Joya Palmview (4-1, 2-0) and will host McAllen Memorial (5-0, 2-0) on October 14th.

(Weslaco, Texas)- The defending 32-5A champions, Weslaco Panthers did it again, as they knocked Los Fresnos in their 32-5A District opener, winning 21-14 at Bob-by Lackey Stadium to remain undefeated at 5-0, 2-0. The win sets up another key matchup with the San Benito Greyhounds (4-1, 2-0) on October 14th should both teams remain unbeaten. The Greyhounds will play host to Los Fresnos on Friday night. Should the Falcons beat the Dogs, this would create a tie for second place for both teams, leaving the Panthers alone in first place. As for the Purple and White? This is the second straight season that head coach Tony Villarreal has watched his Panthers beat the Falcons before some 9,000 fans and now, it’s up to the Panthers to stay on track. The Panthers traveled to Browns-ville Porter (0-5, 0-2) last Friday and took care of business, winning 77-40. They will face Brownsville Lopez (1-3, 0-1) this week at Sams Stadium, before hosting the San Benito Greyhounds (3-1, 1-0) on October 14th at Bobby Lackey Stadium. The Falcons struck first with a high-fly-ing run for 78-yards by Eduardo Ramirez (16 carries-241 yds-2tds) with 11:40 left to play in the first quarter but the Pan-thers would answer right back with RB Brandon Arce’s 71-yard run of his own to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:40 still left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, QB Carlos Madrigal broke some tackles and sprinted down the sidelines for 65-yards to give the Panthers their first lead of the night at 14-7. “Los Fresnos has a great ball club but our defense kept us in the game with big plays,” says Villarreal.

Big plays it was late in the fourth quarter when Villarreal opted to go for a fourth down conversion which led to another Madrigal 11-yard run with 6:10 left in the

game. The Panthers rushed 44 times for 363 yards and fumbled once. The Falcons also matched the Panthers with 37 carries for 274 yards.

Big 31-5A Rivalry. WR Victor Ontiveros of PSJA Memorial (2-3, 0-2) will lead his team against PSJA (2-3, 2-0) on October 14th against the PSJA Bears. The Bears and RB Alexis Ruiz have posted wins over Edinburg North and Economedes in District 31-5A. (HSSMImages/Mike De La Cruz)

PSJA Bears Tied For First PlaceDistrict 31-5A Preview: PSJA Bears vs PSJA Memorial October 14th

(Edinburg, Texas)-At Cats Stadium, the PSJA Bears scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and rushed for 420 yards to win its first game of the year, and an important on too, by knocking off Edinburg North in a wild 47-44 win. The Bears (2-3, 2-0) won its first game of the season, a district game too after losses to McAllen, Los Fresnos, and McAllen Memorial in non-district. “We played tough teams in non-district. This helps us once district comes around,” says Bears head coach Mel Rios. The Bears continued its win streak by beating winless Edinburg Economedes 55-15 last Friday night to remain tied for first place with Harlingen (5-0, 2-0) and PSJA North (4-1, 2-0). The Cougars, however notched its first win of the season last Friday against PSJA Memorial 27-23 to move into second place at 1-1 in District 31-5A. Against the Bears, the Cougars struck first with Tevin Brown scoring on a 15-yard pass from QB Joe Cuellar with 3:47 left in the first period to make it 14-7 Cougars. But, that did not last too long. PSJA went to work and RB Alexis Ruiz rambled 66-yards to tied the game at 2:52 still left in the first quarter. But, again, Edinburg North an-swered right back, this time with Rollie Borrego scoring from 34-yards out to put the Cougars up 22-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears would take a 27-22 lead at the half as the Cougars needed some rest after exhausting themselves in the first quarter. Like the Cougars, the Bears were held scorelss in the third quarter, while Borrego added another touchdown from 2-yards out to give his team a slim 29-27 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Bears de-fense made the big plays. DB Issac Diaz intercepted Cuellar’s pass and returned it 32-yards for a score to put the Bears up

40-22 with 7:36 left to play in the game. “This is the way to open district. With a win. We’ll take it,” said Rios. The Wolverines suffered its second straight district loss after making the State 5A Division II playoffs and winning its first-ever Bi-District title in 2010. The Wolverines playoff hopes could now, be in jeopardy. In all, the Wolverines have lost four games by a total of 15 points, including a heart-breaking loss to PSJA North 21-17 in their district opener.

Tough Raiders. In 31-5A, the PSJA North Raiders QB, Austin Navarro will lead his team against Harlingen this Friday night at PSJA Stadium. Both teams are 2-0 in district play. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

Can Raiders BeatDistrict 31-5A Preview: PSJA North vs Harlingen

No.1 Cardinals?(Pharr, Tx)-The last time the PSJA North Raiders defeated the Harlingen Cardinals was back in 2009, when head coach Bruce Bush surprised first-year head coach Manny Gomez 28-20. Both teams went on to share the 31-5A title but since then, the Cardi-nals have won back-to-back meetings. On Friday night, the Raiders will take their (4-1, 2-0) record against a senior Cardinal team that is undefeated at (5-0, 2-0). The Raiders have posted wins over Nikki Rowe (34-28), Brownsville Rivera (42-7), PSJA Memorial (21-17), and most recently, the Edinburg Bobcats (14-7). All four wins have been against teams that have struggled early on. As for the Cardinals, wins over Cor-pus Christi Carroll (72-0), San Benito (49-7), Edinburg (42-14), and Harlingen South (69-7) have all been blowouts, with the ex-ception of their double-overtime win against the 2009 State 5A Division I Champions, Abilene (45-44). The Raiders are led by quarterback, Austin Navarro (6’2, 200lbs), with plenty of running backs too. Chris Sustaita, Rigo Ramirez, Alex Gutierrez, Marcios Davila, Manny Ibarra, Josh Arevalo, Julian Morales, Joey Medina, and Rollie Flores. Against the Bobcats, Gutierrez rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries. Can the Cardinal defense stop the Raiders running attack? Cardinal head coach Gomez says that “we will play hard-nose football and not take the Raiders lightly. They are a well-coached team.” The Raiders should be the Cardinals biggest test yet. The Cardinals are well-balanced with senior quarterback Kev-in Ledesma leading the team. The Cards have passed for 934 yards and have rushed for over 1,000 yards. Senior running back, Brian Blake rushed for 190 yards and two scores against the Har-lingen South Hawks last week. Ledesma was just as good with 202 yards passing and three touchdowns. Big play-makers, WRs Randy Bermea and Charlie Powers are Ledesma’s go-to-guys and he can depend on both to make the catches need to break open any game, on any given night. Bermea had 3 catches for 111 yards and three scores. Defensively, the Cards scored four times with a fumble recovery and interception returns for touch-downs. If the Raiders expect to stop the Cardinals, Bush will have to find a way to get those first downs and grind out the clock with what they do best: Run, Run, Run. Last year, the Raiders lost to the three-time regional finalist 56-34.

Vikings Surprised By Hounds

Lopez Mauls Economedes

(Brownsville, Tx)-The Brownsville Hanna Eagles are riding a three-game win streak and are tied for first place in District 32-5A at 2-0. They will meet Brownsville Pace (4-1, 1-1) this Thursday night at Sams Stadium in what could turnout to be a real test for head coach Tom Campos. The Eagles started its season with losses to Sharyland and Pre-pa Tech of Monterrey, Mexico and have since won three games against La Joya (14-7), Porter (39-27, and Rivera (30-24). All three wins have been against teams with a combined record of 2-13. What a turnover one year makes for the Hanna. In 2010, the Eagles started off their season with six straight losses and it was that magical win over Los Fresnos (28-7) in Game 7. Now, the Eagles have made up three games with wins in its first five games. In 2009, the Eagles went perfect in District 32-5A, winning the title with 6-0 record under Tom Chavez. Since 2004, the Eagles have posted losing records, other than its dis-trict title season in 2009. The Vikings lost its first game of the year to San Benito 31-20 last week and head coach Rene Medrano would love to get his Vikings back on the win list.

(Brownsville, Tx)-Forget about what happened last Friday night. It was a disappointing loss to San Benito (4-1, 2-0) for head coach Rene Medrano after starting the season at 4-0. The Greyhounds scored first, with Jacob Puente plunging in from one-yard out to make it 7-0. Pace would answer right back with Adrian Alejan-dro scoring from two yards to tie the game with 1:24 left in the first quarter. In the third quarter, Alejandro would score again, this time on a 17-yard run to put the Vikings up 17-10 with 10:12 left in the third quarter. After forcing the Greyhounds to punt, Vic-tor Perez would nail a 38-yard field goal to make it 20-10 with 4:54 still left in the third. But, three straight touchdowns by the Greyhounds would end the Vikings runs. At halftime, both teams were tied at 10-10. “We need to play four quarters of football,” says Medrano. The Greyhounds scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on miscues and held the Vikings scoreless, to wrap up the game. The Greyhounds rushed for 366 yards on 43 carries to get the victory. Puente overcame three interceptions in the game. The Vikings opened its season with a win over Edinburg North 35-28, followed by a 34-10 win over Harlingen South. Against Mission, it was a defensive battle for both teams, but the Vikings held on to win 13-9. The Vikings opened District 32-5A with a win over Brownsville Lopez 34-0.

(Edinburg, Tx)- Brownsville Lopez (1-4, 0-2) won its first of the season in Week One, defeating Edinburg Economedes (0-5, 0-2) by one point, 27-26 in non-district action. The win was a first for new head football coach, Michael Ramirez. The Lobos have lost three straight since then to Alice (41-0), Brownsville Pace (34-0), and Los Fresnos (44-3). Lopez will now meet defending champions, Weslaco (5-0, 2-0) on Friday night in another 32-5A game. The Lobos return five starters on both sides of the field but have struggled defensively, allowing 207 points scored by opposing teams. For the year, the Lobos have scored only 37 points and against the Jaguars, they needed a fourth quarter run to beat the Jags.

(Edcouch, Tx)-Edcouch-Elsa Yellow-jacket head football coach Joe Solis only has two things on his mind: Winning the district title and then getting past the second round of the state playoffs in Class 4A. He might be thinking ahead, but that’s Joe. He is always thinking about what he can do next for the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow-jackets (5-0, 3-0). “I love these guys. They are my family. Most of all, I love this game,” said Solis. In their season opener against Port Isabel and Rio Hondo, they went un-challenged, winning both games by a combined score of 82-13. In district play, the Jackets have beaten Hidal-

go, Juarez-Lincoln, and Mercedes by a combined score of 130-16. With games left against Valley View, Roma, Rio Grande City, before they meet up with Weslaco East (6-1, 3-0) for a possible district championships. The Wildcats are the defending champions and with Mission Veterans out of the district race, this could leave the Yellowjackets going head-to-head with East. In 2010, East won 31-20; in 2009 the Yellow-jackets lost again to the Wildcats 11-8, But, in 2008 the Jackets traveled to Bobby Lackey Stadium on a Saturday afternoon and won 42-23 and claimed the 32-4A title too. A few weeks ago, the woes continued

for the winless Hidalgo Pirates (1-5, 1-2) as they lost again, to Edcouch-Elsa at Bill Pate Stadium. The Yellowjack-ets stung the Pirates’ offense by recov-ering four fumbles, two intercepted passes, including LB Luis Hernandez’s 82-yard fumble recovery for a score. Also adding another big run was E-E running back Alonzo Toscano, who found daylight on the blue-field turf for an 86-yard touchdown. “Hopefully, we will remain patient and not get too over anxious. We want our district title back,” he adds.

(Weslaco, Texas)-“We got beat,” said Weslaco East Wildcat head football coach Armando Cuellar. “This is a rude awak-ening for our program. On any given night, your opponent can beat you. San Benito did just that tonight. I congratulate the Greyhound team.” The Wildcats and Greyhounds both tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter but head coach Spencer Gnatt watched his team score 14 points in the second quarter to take a 21-10 lead at

the half. Wildcat quarterback John Areva-lo completed only 12-of-23 passes for 108 yards and one interception while Aaron Muniga had 20 carries for 116 yards. That was then, this is now. The Wildcats, since then, have stepped it up a notch but Cuel-lar seemed worried when they met Val-ley View (1-5, 0-4). For one quarter, one moment, head coach Armando Cuellar was nervous as the game remained 0-0 at the end of the first quarter but that would

change as the Wildcats went wild, scoring four touchdowns, including a safety with 4:20 left in the half to take a 30-0 lead at the half. For a running team, the Wild-cats score three touchdowns on passes from QB John Arevalo to WR Eli Urbina (14yds), Tommy Maldonado (38 yds), and Brandon Hernandez’s 14-yard catch in the endzone to end the half. In the second half, the Wildcats score five more touchdowns, this time, all on the ground on runs of 65, 14, 10, 1, in-cluding their final score by Macro Navar-ro’s 8-yard run with 3:44 left to play in the fourth. The Wildcats rushed 33 times for 373 yards and held Valley View to 174 total yards. Navarro ended the night with 13 carries for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns and Valley View’s Alexis Guarjardo had 36 carries for 152 yards. Weslaco East traveled to Roma (2-3, 1-2) last week and came out with a 36-7 win. Against Mercedes, Aaron Munguia was named the HSSM’s Chick-Fil-A Player of the Week after scoring seven touchdowns and rushing 297 yards. The Wildcats will play Rio Grande City (3-2, 3-0), this week and Mission Veterans (2-4, 2-2) on October 20th. If the Weslaco East Wildcats expect to defend its district title, they will have to play solid football and Cuellar feels that they are beginning to gel as a team, just in time for their match up with Edcouch-Elsa on October 28th at Bobby Lackey Stadi-um. “This game will be a big one. But, we have to take care of business first,” adds Cuellar.

High School Sports Magazine presents the Chick-Fil-A Player of the Week for “Week O” and this award goes to McAllen Nikki Rowe quarterback, Javi Obregon. The junior quarterback rushed for three touchdowns inside the ten-yard line and passed for four more touchdowns, completing 21-of-28 passes for 316 yards in their win over Edinburg Economedes 62-35. Each week Chick-Fil-A and High School Sports Magazine will honor the top play-er in South Texas.

In Week 4, Chick-Fil-A Player of the Week awards goes to McAl-len Memorial QB Matthew Kaufmann who rushed for 276 yards and three touchdowns, including 102 yards passing in leading the Mustangs to a 51-38 win over the McAllen Bulldogs in their 30-5A District opener. The Mustangs have defeated the Bulldogs for the second straight season to stay at 5-0, 2-0 for the season. In Week 5, Joel Martinez of Sharyland kicked a 49-yard field goal to lead the Rattlers in a come-from-behind win over Donna 17-15 in District 30-5A.

All Chick-Fil-A Player of the Week winners will compete for the HSSM/Chick-Fil-A Player of the Year honors and will be award-ed a $1,000 scholarship from Chick-Fil-A and HSSM in May 2012. “We are proud to team up with HSSM to present these awards,” says Ted Venecia of Chick-Fil-A in Mission.

In Week One, QB Kevin Ledesma rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns; he also passed for 177 yards and one score leading Harlingen to 72-0 victory over CC Carroll. Ledesma has led his Cardinals to a 5-0 record in 2011.

Thanks for the great Football Friday Night Lights. Mission Veterans Memorial senior quarterback, Adrian Morales suffered a season-ending injury against Mission. He played his only complete game of the year against Somerset. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

(Mission, Texas)-On HSSM’s Football Photoday, Adrian Mo-rales was excited of have been chosen to grace the cover of the High School Sports Magazine’s Football Preview’s Cover. “This is an honor,” he said. HSSM salutes Morales for his courage and leadership. In 2010, he led the Mission Veterans Memorial Pa-triots to the District 32-4A Co-Championships and took his team to the State 4A Division I Bi-District Championships, winning 30-24 over Flour Bluff. Here is his last complete game before falling to Mission in the second game of the year: Coming back to Tom Landry Stadium in Mission, Texas was like home to former Mission Eagles head coach Sonny Detmer. As usual, Detmer sat in the pressbox and led his team to a wild come-from-behind win over the 2010 32-4A co-champions, Mis-sion Veterans 41-34 in non-district action. “Isn’t this wild,” he told HSSM. “It doesn’t get any better than this; this was a great win for us.” The Somerset Bulldogs (1-0) faced a 4th and seven with :36 seconds left to play from the Mission Veterans 47-yard line. Bulldog quarterback Joey Dominguez dropped back and found wide-receiver Melecio Haro in single coverage and scored the win-ning touchdown. This was Haro’s third touchdown of the night. In the second half, Haro caught a 70-yard pass from Dominguez to set up WR Eden Rodriguez for a 12-yard catch for a score to put the Bulldogs up 10-0 with 8:08 right before the half. But Veterans (0-1) quarterback Adrian Morales rallied his team to its first score with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Richardo Alvarez to make it 10-7 with :56 seconds left in the half. The Mission Veterans defense held Som-erset deep in its own territory, forcing them to punt from their endzone with :19 seconds left in the half. A shanked punt resulted in first and ten at the Somerset 22-yard line. Morales wasted no time in finding WR Issac Guerrero for a touchdown to make it 14-10 at the half. With 4:19 left in the third period, the Bulldogs fum-bled and the Patriots took over at the Bulldogs 24-yard line. Morales, again, (6’3, 200lbs) would find WR Gabriel Zamora for his third touchdown pass of the night to put the Pats up 21-10. The Pats stopped the Bulldogs again and took over at their own 36-yard line; two plays later, Morales broke loose down the sidelines untouched for a 64-yard touchdown run. This put the Pats in control 28-10 with 2:35 left in the third. Bulldog quarterback Domin-guez (6’3, 195lbs) added some spark with his own 32-yard touchdown run up the middle to get the Dogs barking,

trailing 28-16 with 9:44 left in the game. Bulldog receiver Haro caught his second touchdown pass of the night, this time for 41-yards from QB Dominguez to make it 28-23 with 6:40 to play. Down 31-28, Mission Veterans QB senior Morales took over and led the Pats to two straight completions, one for 17-yards to WR Rick Alvarez to the Bulldogs 21-yard line and then Santos Villar-real caught a pass from Morales and was tackled at the one-yard line. Morales took it in on the next play. The extra point attempt was block, with Bulldog Colton Fuselier returning it 85-yards for two points. Score: Mission Veterans 34-33 with 3:31 to play. Morales ended the night with 9-of-29 passes and rushed for 123 yards and two scores. This was the last touchdown Morales would score in his high school football career. “I can’t believe that this happened. It’s tough. But, I will recover and hopefully, play more sports this year,” said Morales.

Ramblin’ RattlersDistrict 32-4A GameDay: Rio Grande City to play Weslaco East

(Pharr, Texas)-The Rio Grande City Rattlers have done it again in District 32-4A by beating Valley View Tigers 27-14 to stay perfect in district play at 3-0, overall 3-2. The Rattlers then host-ed Roma and won again, 42-28 to put themselves at 3-0 in Dis-trict 32-4A. Surprised? Don’t be. In the off-season, Rio Grande City hired former Mission Veterans Memorial head coach, Car-los Longoria. It was a good move too. In their season opener against La Joya Palmview (4-1, 2-0), the Rattlers lost 41-0 followed by another loss to La Joya (1-4, 0-2). Both games were on the road. Longoria made some quick adjustments and have since, won three straight district games since. Against the Mercedes Tigers, Rio Grande City won 39-28 at home at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium. It’s a big turn around from 2010, their first season in Class 4A. They lost nine games and won just one. Against Valley View, Rattlers running back Daryl Lopez scored on a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give RGC their second win of the season. He rushed for 97 yards for the night. But the Rattlers needed to work in the second half after trailing 14-13 to the Tigers. Longoria opened the sec-ond half with his team scoring on a four-play 80-yard drive and then the Rattlers converted on a two-point attempt to take the lead for good 21-14. Now, the Rattlers head down East Expressway 83, to meet the Weslaco East Wildcats (5-1, 4-0) in a real test of progress.

Both teams are undefeated in District 32-4A and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Lackey Stadium. Head coach Armando Cuellar feels that there is “plague” going on in Weslaco East. “We have been riddled with injuries. Playing in a eight-team dis-trict doesn’t give teams much time to heal deep into the season,” says Cuellar. Against Roma, East back-up quarterback Brandon Guzman was carried off the field with a hip-injury. The Rattlers will have to stop East RB Aaron Munguia, who rushed for 274 yards and scored four touchdowns against Roma. He already has 1,024 yards for the season with four games left to play. For the year, Weslaco East has rushed for 1,889 yards and average 7.0 yards per carry. Most importantly, on defense the Wildcats have recorded 18 quarterback sacks, 14 alone by Efrain Alvarez. If needed, Wildcats QB John Arevalo will throw the football into the hands of WR Tommy Maldonado (13 catch-es/259 yards), and Eli Urbina (10 catches/166 yards). Urbina’s longest catch is 68 yards for the year. The Rio Grande City Rattlers might have an advantage over the defending 32-4A Co-Champs. The Wildcats could be look-ing ahead with their meet-ing against Edcouch-Elsa on October 28th. Are the Rattlers for real? “We are playing good football and our players are learning more each week. It’s a new season,” says Rattlers head coach, Longoria.

District 32-3A GameDay: La Feria vs La Grulla

La Feria Mauls Santa RosaOpens District Against Gators(La Feria, Texas)-In the Farmers Insurance Game of the Week, it was a great homecoming for La Feria head coach Oscar Salinas as he led his Lions to its fourth victory of the year, beating Santa Rosa 30-6 on Homecoming Night. The former La Feria offensive coordinator made sure that his team would stay on track too. The Lions scored first and then head coach Josh Gonzales led his team to the opposite side for the Warrior’s first score to make it 7-6 with 4:26 left in the first quarter. The Lions would answer right back on the ensuing kickoff with Juan Garcia racing 67 yards to the Warriors 19-yard line but a few plays later, SS Marco Garza intercepted a pass to end the Lion’s drive. But, the same thing would happen to the Warriors too. A tipped pass ended up in the hands of La Feria and they would take over at the 22-yard line. The Lions have posted wins over Hidalgo, Mercedes, Porter, Santa Rosa, and most recently, La Villa in non-district action. They will travel to Rio Grande

City to open district play against an inspired La Grulla Gators team on October 7th. A few weeks ago, Gators head coach Abel Gon-zalez lost his father, whom he considered his “best friend”. Since then, the Gators have been on a vision quest to win a district title in the school’s second season in football. La Grulla has played a mix of teams in its non-district schedule against La Villa (21-14), Raymondville (28-20), Brownsville Porter (48-21), Lyford (35-13), and MMA (56-7). Salinas is excited about coming back to La Feria after a dismal stay with the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars, where he led them to only one playoff sea-son. This is a different Lions team and they will be excited come Friday night. It’s a showdown! Can the Gators upset the Lions? The La Feria Lions ad-vanced to the State 3A quarterfinals in 2008, losing to Cuero 55-13.

(McAllen,Tx)-Edinburg senior Jessica Tamen made her day look quite easy as she fired an 8-under par 68-68 on both days to win the McAllen ISD Girl’s Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Palmview Golf Course on September 23&24. On the boys bracket, Sharyland’s Peter Fox was on the run, winning first place with scores of 71 & 72 to finish one-under par. Overall, the Sharyland boys and girls teams dominated the weekend by winning the tourna-ment. While both individual seniors easily won the event, the tournament was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the first day by Sharyland senior Juan Gonzalez. He took a seven iron at the No.2 Par 3, 183 yard hole and

hit his shot to the green. Then, the celebrating started when players at the green watched the ball hit and then roll in. “This is unbelievable. I always wondered what it would feel like to hit a hole-in-one, and now I’m speechless,” said Rodriguez. He would add a birdie on the next hole, the Par 4, No. 3, 330 yards. But, Rodriguez had his troubles at Holes 7,8, & 9 as he struggled off the tee box to get bogeys at each hole to card an even par 36 after nine holes. He first day score of 74, two-over par helped the Rattlers boys team to take an early lead with a 293. McAllen Memorial ju-nior golfer, Juan Gon-zalez struggled on the final day after finish-ing the first day with a

one-over par 73. “I just didn’t get those pars or birdies on those Par 5’s today. This is frustrat-ing,” said Gonzalez. On the first hole, Gon-zalez went right, into the water off the Par 5, No.1 tee box to quickly card a seven, and Fox would follow him right into the water too to get the same score. Trailing by two strokes, Gonzalez made up one stroke on No.2-Par 3 with a birdie to stay one-stroke back, behind Fox. Both players card-ed pars on No.3, 4, 5, 6, until the infamous Par 5, No.7-577yard hole. Fox played flawless, while Gonzalez got into trouble and carded a bo-gey to end the front nine still two strokes behind Fox. The 2011 30-5A de-fending champion, Fox increased his lead for good with birdies on No.14&15 to beat the 2010 30-5A cham-pion, Gonzalez by five strokes. “I’m beginning to play with more con-fidence. I had a great summer playing golf. This was a great win today,”said Fox. On the final day, Sharyland’s Jon Ybarra finished with a one-over par 73 to lead his Rat-tlers with a total score of 298 and two-day fin-ish of 591. “We played good this weekend. Our players understand that they have to bring their game. We played with-out our senior, Carlos Pena. This will be inter-esting,” says head coach Fernando Rodriguez of

The nine-time defending dis-trict champions are favored to win the 30-5A again and aspirations of advancing to state in 2012 looks probable. “We just need to keep playing competitive amongst each other.
