WORKFORCEWORKFORCE
Dear Colleague,
The Departments of Labor and Higher Education, working in close collaboration with the constituent units of public higher education, are pleased to present Higher Education: Building Connecticut’s Workforce, a comprehensive report on the employment of graduates of our public colleges and universities. The report summarizes the employment and compensation experience of students who graduated from the State’s 18 public colleges in 2006, and provides detailed information on these employed graduates by industry sector, degree program and college.
This project builds upon other initiatives to identify the employment outcomes of participants in public programs, including the Department of Labor’s work on the Connecticut Employment and Training Commission’s annual report card and the Department of Higher Education’s efforts to assess the employment success of graduates through its annual accountability report.
Through this collaborative effort, we have been able to quantify the benefits of attaining a college degree and the importance of our higher education system to building and sustaining an educated workforce. The report also demonstrates the benefits of making use of research and information resources across agencies to assist state policy makers with addressing critical state needs.
We hope you find the report useful and welcome your comments and suggestions for future reports.
Sincerely,
Patricia H. Mayfield Michael P. Meotti Commissioner Commissioner Connecticut Department of Labor Connecticut Department of Higher Education

About this Report…
The Connecticut Departments of Labor and Higher Education, working in close collaboration with the University of Connecticut, Connecticut State University, Connecticut Community Colleges and Charter Oak State College, are pleased to present a comprehensive report on the employment of graduates of the State’s public college system.1 The report summarizes the employment and compensation experience of students who graduated from our 18 public colleges during the 2006 school year. The report also provides a detailed summary of graduate employment by industry sector and college degree program for the state as a whole, for each system of education and for each individual institution.
This project builds upon the Department of Labor’s work on the Connecticut Employment and Training Commission’s annual report of employment outcomes for the State’s education and training programs, and the Department of Higher Education’s efforts to assess the employment success of its graduates through its annual accountability report.2 Overall, 68 percent of the 17,726 graduates were found to be working in Connecticut seven to nine months after their graduation in a wide variety of industry sectors, including educational services, health care, professional and technical services, manufacturing and retail trade.
It is extremely important to note that all the data and analyses provided in the report reflect employment in Connecticut only, and exclude self-employment and federal employment. Some graduates not found to be working in Connecticut may have found employment in other states or may be continuing their education (i.e. attending graduate school). Data on employment in other states, the federal government, and self-employment were not available for this analysis.
The report has been designed to provide a convenient, easy to understand summary for all of public higher education in the State, each of the four public college systems, and each individual institution. These summaries include information on program of study, demographic characteristics, industry sector, average quarterly earnings and size of company for students employed in the third quarter after their graduation. Readers are encouraged to use this information in their planning and analyses as they may find appropriate.
Acknowledgements: Cynthia DeLisa and Dana Placzek, Research Analysts at the Connecticut Department of Labor, prepared this report. Mary Johnson of the Department of Higher Education contributed to the text and coordinated the review and input of the constituent units on the project.

WORKING IN CONNECTICUT. Of the 17,726 Connecticut public college graduates in 2006, two of every three (68%) were employed in Connecticut in the third quarter after graduation. As would be expected, the percentage varied somewhat across each higher education system with 78 percent of graduates from the Connecticut Community Colleges (CCCs) employed in the State, 76 percent of those from the Connecticut State University System (CSUS), 56 percent of those from the University of Connecticut (UConn), and 26 percent from Charter Oak State College (COSC). These results reflect, in part, the student population each system serves, from the predominantly local communities served by the CCCs to students potentially around the world pursuing the completely on-line offerings of COSC. While all of the four-year public colleges serve students from inside and outside the State, the CSUS draws most of its students from within Connecticut, while UConn attracts a larger percentage of its students (nearly 20% of total enrollment) from other states and countries. WORKING FOR LARGE FIRMS. Nearly seven of every ten (69%) 2005-06 public college graduates were employed by firms with 100 or more employees; 45% worked in firms with 500 or more employees. Large firm employment ranged from 63% of graduates of the CCCs to 79% of those from COSC. MAJORITY ARE WOMEN. Almost two out of every three (65%) employed graduates were women. This was relatively consistent across all systems, ranging from 57% at COSC to 69% at the CCCs. This also reflects long-term enrollment and degree trends. In the 2006 graduating class, women earned 62 percent of all degrees awarded in the public sector institutions and captured the majority of degrees at almost every degree level. MEETING CONNECTICUT’S KNOWLEDGE NEEDS. The Department of Labor regularly projects the need for workers in the State’s industries and occupations. The industries in which the demand is now greatest include the education and health services sector, which will provide more than one-third of the career opportunities, and professional and business services. Sixty percent of the twenty fastest growing occupations in Connecticut will require a minimum of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, reflecting the importance of higher education in meeting the knowledge and skill needs of Connecticut’s economy. As measured by the number of new jobs created, nearly half of Connecticut’s leading careers will be in management, professional and technical occupations. These include positions in healthcare, business and financial operations management, education and training, and computer and mathematical occupations. Addressing these needs, the top five degree-producing disciplines among public higher education institutions for many years have been, in order, business, education, health professions, social sciences and history, and liberal arts and sciences. They comprised 57 percent of all degrees in 2006. Consistent with this, the greatest numbers of employed graduates majored in Business Management (2,162), followed by Education (1,637), Liberal Arts & Sciences (1,439) and Health Professions and Related Sciences (1,429). Public college graduates employed in Connecticut were more likely to be working in Educational Services (23%) than in any other single industry sector. Although information on their occupations is not available, most are likely to be employed as teachers. However, the Department of Higher Education reports that while a total of 3,679 students were awarded teaching credentials in 2006, only 43 percent were in the critical shortage areas identified by the State Department of Education, such as special

education, mathematics, music, and remedial reading. Health Care and Social Assistance was the next largest industry sector employing 21% of all public college graduates. FINANCIAL REWARDS. The 2006 graduates have realized the financial rewards of their education, with those working for utilities companies and corporate headquarters reaping the highest average quarterly earnings (Utilities - $21,162, Management of Companies and Enterprises - $15,026). Those working in Manufacturing and Finance & Insurance also had notable quarterly earnings ($13,768 and $12,639, respectively). On average, Connecticut public college graduates in 2006 earned over $9,600 in the third quarter after graduation. ____________________________________________________________________ For additional information and other products from the Department of Labor and the Department of Higher Education: The Connecticut Department of Labor Information on the labor market, workforce, occupations and careers in Connecticut can be found by selecting Labor Market Information at www.ct.gov/dol.
