Greenwich University pioneered the con-cept of foreign degree program in Pakistan in1987 when the foundation of GreenwichInstitute was laid. Our commitment to thenoble cause made headway and within a shortspan of four years, Greenwich University wasshifted to a purpose-built campus. Today,Greenwich University is regarded as one ofthe best universities in the private sector inPakistan.

Campus ExperienceIt’s not the collection of dead bricks that cre-

place in the morning, afternoon and in theevening to cater to the needs of people com-ing from different places and backgrounds. Each classroom has now the facility of multi-media that facilitates instructors and studentsin teaching and learning.

Research CulturePromotion of research in various academic

disciplines has always been regarded as oneof the fundamental responsibilities of a univer-sity. This is done through a variety of ways, such as offering M.Phil/ MS and doctoral andpost-doctoral programs; publication ofresearch journals, and organizing seminars, symposia and conferences. The Universityalso encourages its faculty members to partic-

ipate and present their research papers atnational and international conferences.

The Greenwich Research & DevelopmentCenter (GRDC) has been set up in a separatebuilding on the campus. It is fully air-condi-tioned and adequately equipped with comput-er and net facilities and provides conduciveatmosphere for research.

To promote research culture and in an effortto stay abreast of the global challenges our

economy is facing, Greenwich University helda two-day Online International Conference onEnergy Crisis Management, from June 7-8,2011. The online conference was conceptual-ized so that people from all around the globeexchange ideas on how to revive our econo-my. The objective of the conference was toraise awareness among masses and suggestalternative energy resources to policy makersin Pakistan.

The international contributors of the confer-ence participated from Switzerland, Nigeriaand Scotland. The local contributors included

researchers from all over Pakistan belongingto different organizations such as MESEC,KCCI, KESC, Ceres Associates (Gulf), andthe students and faculty of GreenwichUniversity.

During the two days of the conference thir-ty-five experts on energy read their researchpapers. In his inaugural speech, the guest ofhonor Mr. Kalim A. Siddiqi, President, BycoPetroleum appreciated the effort of GreenwichUniversity and emphasized on creating mean-ingful link between academia and corporatesector.

National and InternationalCollaboration

Greenwich Universitystrives to broaden its horizons by embracinginternational academic expertise and culturaldiversity of the universities around the world. To implement this concept, GreenwichUniversity has signed Memorandums ofUnderstanding (MoUs) with four universitiesnamely Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia;Ankara University, Turkey; LimkokwingUniversity, Malaysia, and University of Dhaka,Bangladesh. Under the MoUs, the universitiescollaborate to enhance the academic stan-dards and develop a framework for jointresearch pursuits between students and facul-ty.

Greenwich University has also signed aMemorandum of Understanding with KarachiChamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI),Pakistan’s largest platform of business com-munity having more than half a century recordof playing a vital role in economic and tradedevelopment with 50,000 members.

Quality Assurance CellA proper Quality Assurance Cell, functions

to further streamline the academic system. The Quality Assurance Cell (QAC) atGreenwich University since its creation hasensured excellence in academics, manage-ment and facilities on the campus. This checkand balance system has kept us alert to theneeds of time which has resulted in consider-able progress in updating and revising of cur-riculum, approving of new programs, monitor-ing of faculty for high teaching standards, rapidstudent feedback online and ensuring accura-cy in examination and testing throughModeration Committee.

Student ActivitiesThere are endless activities going on at

Greenwich - including the enthusiastic devo-tion of students working for the flood victims in2010. There are seminars organized by vari-ous departments, and award - giving cere-monies and recognitions of merit. We have

academic workshops at one end of the spec-trum and variety shows and concerts at theother.

The cafeteria is another favorite haunt forstudents. Be it a live cricket match on the bigscreen, or spicy ‘samosas’ and ‘chaat’ withstimulating tea and coffee, the students eat, drink, chat and refresh themselves before thenext class. They also socialize here, and thishelps them to live like a community with asense of camaraderie. The shed erected onbamboos beside the China Gate offers a coolspot to tired students who relax under it bygossiping and talking their worries and fatigueaway. The pleasant breeze reinvigorates themfor the next session.

From the time the University began operat-ing, it has paid the utmost importance to itssports facilities. Greenwich has operated with-in its own campus; 3000 yards of space havebeen designated to sports at the back of themain building, where there is a turf pitch forcricket, and there are courts for netball, volley-ball, throw ball and basketball. There are alsotennis and badminton courts, with cementedflooring and floodlit arrangements for nightmatches. There is a covered 1800 square feetair-conditioned basement as well, which con-tains snooker and table tennis tables, and agymnasium.

Social ResponsibilityThe Greenwich community is fully con-

scious of its obligation to contribute to the wel-fare of the general public. With a strong senseof social responsibility towards our compatri-ots, we have played our role effectively in alle-viating their sufferings on various occasions. Our drives against socio-economic ills includehealth care, education, living conditions, etc.for the downtrodden segment of our society.

The earthquake in 2005 and the floods in2010 left millions of Pakistanis homeless, butnot helpless. The Greenwich community madeconcerted efforts to help the people affectedby natural calamities.

Greenwich University: A legacyof academic excellence in HEC

The international contributors of the conference participated from Switzerland, Nigeria and Scotland. The local contributorsincluded researchers from all over Pakistan belonging to different organizations such as MESEC, KCCI, KESC, CeresAssociates (Gulf), and the students and faculty of Greenwich University

Iqra University is one of the premierlearning & research Universities ofPakistan. Iqra University was chartered inthe year 2000 by the Government of Sindhand since then it has shown excellence inBusiness Administration and later it beganto spread its wings into the fields ofEngineering, Computer sciences, Mediasciences as well as Textile and Fashiondesigning.

Iqra's graph is continuously roaring sincethe last few years. Let's have a look at whatare the salient features that made itdeserve the position:

The Philosophy:Iqra University has strong emphasis on pro-viding educated people to the society Iqra'sphilosophy is that "we are not in the busi-ness of education". Iqra believes thatUniversity is more of a community servicethan an organization. As when one is doing

business the targets are different, but whenyou are in education the targets are entirelydifferent .IU does not believe in producingdegree owners but the ones with the knowl-edge and wisdom. IU produces educatedpeople, people who will yield positive effectson the progress in the society and our future.

The Faculty:IU gives utmost importance to its faculty

as the faculty serves as the basic pillars ofany university. No educational institutionwill progress unless it has suitable goodfaculty to run it. It is the faculty that impartsstandard education and that causes the

institution progress. Iqra University has thebest faculty, in Karachi only IU has 40 PhDfaculty members. No other Private Sectoruniversity equals Iqra in this.

The Environment:Iqra University believes that, it is our

social responsibility and duty to preparesuch people and provide to the society, which have the ability of tolerance.

Iqra has students from all over Pakistan;form Sindh, Punjab, K-P. Students withurban and rural backgrounds sit in thesame classrooms. They may have politicalaffiliations but when they are at the cam-pus, they are students only. Iqra assumesthe responsibility of providing them peace-ful environment and develop a sense ofresponsibility to maintain it.

The students at Iqra have an easyaccess to higher Management and teach-ers, which enables them to share their con-

cerns and issues and get them resolvedinstantly; if they may have any.

Importance of Research:The research output plays vital role in

university rankings. IU policies and rulesplay their role in the background of this sit-uation. IU has always focused on theimportance of enhancing knowledge ratherthan preparing parrots that could rote learnthe books. It starts imparting knowledge atbachelor level that others give at PhD lev-els. Even the BBA students participate ininternational conferences and publishpapers in ISI listed journals. It is a require-

ment of Higher Education Commission thatone most get their research paper pub-lished in order to get a Ph.D., but in IU BBAstudents are doing commendable researchwork and also getting it published at a greatease.

Teaching Methodology:Iqra University's target is to be included

in the top universities of the world. Itbelieves that every classroom presents aunique community of learners that variesnot only in abilities, but also in learningstyles. Our role as an educationist is to givestudents the tools with which they can culti-vate their own gardens of knowledge. Toaccomplish this goal IU has developed cur-riculum that makes learning relevant to life.

IU believes that Theory is written in thebooks. The students should be checked onhow that theory will be applied on a partic-ular situation. If he could apply he has the

theory. We have standardized every classin Iqra following this approach. As a resultwe have output according to our demands. And above all we do not produce degreeholders, we produce educated people.

Placement & Corporate Liaison:Another very important thing thing is the

degree of contacts the university maintainswith the industry. Last year heads of 400organizations visited Iqra University andthey educated the students about the envi-ronment of the industry.

Iqra University ensures 100% job place-ment for its graduates. Iqra University grad-

uates have a strong record of success inattaining employment in reputable national& international organizations with incomelevels well above average. IU qualificationsare highly regarded by employers every-where and our graduates form a powerfulnetwork of success across all industries.

Technology:Iqra uses technology developed by its

own students for the university.A student can enroll for courses from his

home. He can see the faculty lectures fromhome. He can check his attendance fromhome. Even his parents can check if theirchildren have attended the class or not andat what time did he or she come in the cam-pus. The exam results are published online. An application can be submitted online.Students are informed through SMS incase of any disturbance.

Performance of any class, any teacher orany individual student is monitored throughspecial software which is developed by ourown students. Therefore the learning level

of IU students is very high. Students evenat the bachelor level have been made tolearn to use software such as SPSS, asthey will have to work on software whenthey go into the industry. IU is movingahead with a particular purpose and atheme.

Infrastructure & facilities:Iqra University has continuously worked

on increasing its infrastructure and facili-ties. Iqra provides its students with fullyequipped state-of-the-art laboratories, com-puterized and well equipped libraries withaccess to over 40,000 latest books and on-and-off -campus access to over 30,000research journals.

IU provides its students with spaciousand beautiful campus with added benefitsof multiple sports complexes and swimmingand health facilities. It maintains a peacefulenvironment. There are eleven coaches fordifferent sports and Iqra students partici-pate in Asian games and other prominentcompetitions on both National as well as

International Level. And above all they always win prizes

wherever they go. The credit of the successgoes to the visionary leadership. The high-er management has provided a freehandwhere everyone can demonstrate his fullpotential.

Iqra University's target is to be includedin the top universities of the world. It intendsmore modernization of its Campus. A

twelve story building is being constructedfor this which will be an enormous andstate-of-the-art educational tower. It willhave all facilities including parking.

Reasonable Fee Structure and Financial Aid: There has been a price hike but IU has

not increased its fees for the last five years.Another important point is that perhaps Iqrahas more students studying on qarz-i-hasna than any public sector university.Any student who says he cannot afford, canstart education on qarz-i-hasna. And thosewho cannot pay fees in one go can pay it ininstallments.

Iqra uses technology developed by its ownstudents for the university

Iqra University: A premier learning and research university

Middlesex University has a long andproud history as a provider of high qualityeducation in London. Its roots wereformed in 1878 when St Katherine'sCollege opened in Tottenham. The firsteducational institution to be located onthe site of Middlesex's current flagshipcampus in Hendon - the HendonTechnical Institute - opened in Hendon in1939.

In 1992, the Polytechnic became

Middlesex University by Royal Assentand in 1996 Professor Michael Driscollbecame the Vice-Chancellor. He remainsat the helm of this historic universitytoday.1996 was also the year thatMiddlesex was awarded the first of threeQueen's Anniversary Prizes for Higherand Further Education, for its innovativeprovision of Work Based Learning, givingpeople the opportunity to gain a degreefor the knowledge and expertise theyacquire through their work. A furtherQueen's Anniversary Prize, this time forEducation Technology followed in 1998and a third in 2000, for the University'sgroundbreaking Flood Hazard ResearchCentre.A different sort of prize cameMiddlesex's way in 2003. The Universitywas given the Queen's Award forEnterprise, for International Trade. Thisaward recognised Middlesex as the veryfirst British university to open, in 1995, a

network of recruitment offices around theworld. This move gave thousands of inter-national students the opportunity to cometo London to study at Middlesex. TheUniversity's international status was rein-forced in 2005 when it opened an entireMiddlesex campus - in Dubai and onceagain in 2010 with a campus opening inMauritius.

Middlesex was one of the first Britishuniversities to open campuses overseas,

the first in Dubai in 2005 and the secondin Mauritius in 2010. The Universityrecognises that more and more of our stu-dents will have a career that spans theworld, even if they do not travel for theirwork or work in different countries, theyare likely to be required to communicatewith people located in other countries andcontinents.

The Middlesex University Mauritiusand Dubai Campuses are integral parts ofMiddlesex University and are subject tothe same rigorous quality assurance pro-cedures that have earned MiddlesexUniversity in London the highest possibleendorsement from UK's QualityAssurance Agency for Higher Education. The degree programmes offered at thesecampuses are recognised the world oversince they are validated and monitored toexactly the same standards as thoseoffered at Middlesex's London campuses.

These stringent standards apply to bothUndergraduate Honours and Mastersdegrees. The academics that teach atthese campuses have the same impres-sive qualifications as those who teach atour London campuses, and many havereceived their own academic awards atBritish universities. Our full time academ-ic staff are complemented by our part-time staff who, in addition to being wellqualified, are all industry practitioners.

We chose Mauritius because we knewthere are lots of students who rightlyvalue the high standards of British highereducation and wish to have their pro-grammes validated within the British sys-tem of higher education, at an affordablecost and a considerable saving whencompared to studying for the samedegree in the UK. Middlesex has led theway in providing British higher educationin countries other than the UK.

Our mission is to continue to grow asrapidly and robustly we have throughoutour history. The focus for now and for thefuture is on equipping our students withthe skills they need for work and for life;developing our campuses and realisingour international ambitions with the devel-opment of new overseas campuses thatmake it possible for students around theglobe to study and gain a Middlesexdegree wherever they live.

Our mission is to continue to grow as rapidly and robustly as wehave throughout our history

The journey of a student aspiring tojoin a UK university for studies beginsas soon as the idea comes into theirmind. From this point British Councilbecomes an important part of thisjourney and is always there to leadstudents reach the institution of theirchoice conveniently.

The journey and relationship do notend after a student is accepted in aninstitution of their choice in the UK. Itrather strengthens and flourishes asthese students return as BritishAlumni after completion of their stud-ies.

The Education UK department ofBritish Council encourages returningstudents to become members of theBritish Council Alumni network whereboth the alumnus and the BritishCouncil can work together, promotingthe positive experiences shared bythe alumnus of not only the institutionattended, but also of the UK experi-ence.

The British Alumni are always verykeen to share their experiences withprospective students that want to pur-sue their education in the UK. Thestories include life in the UK as a stu-dent and how it has benefited themupon their return to Pakistan:

Shining through'Shine' is an exciting competition

managed by the British Council thatcelebrates the achievements of inter-national students and their contribu-tions to life in the UK. Last yearalmost 1,500 students submittedapplications, which involved themwriting 'letters home' in English.Samreen Azim from Pakistan washonoured as one of the 36 prize-win-ners.

Samreen is studying Medicine inLiverpool and is currently in her sec-ond year. In her winning letter shewrote: "I know its cliché, but I am liv-ing the best days of my life here inEngland! I know that back home in

Pakistan you require nothing butbrains to get into medical school, buthere in the UK, work experience is afundamental and a highly beneficialprocess of getting into medicalschool. I adjusted to the warm, friend-

ly atmosphere immediately. I am alsoa member of the Islamic Committee(ISOC) here in Liverpool. I know youwere worried (and wrongly so!) aboutme opening my fast alone inRamadan. Well being a member ofISOC means that I can open my fastwith all other Muslim girls that comefrom a wide range of backgrounds. Ireally feel at home here".

Good chemistryAbid Iftikhar completed his PhD

from Liverpool John MooresUniversity recently. He narrates his

story quite enthusiastically: "I find itextremely difficult to summarize theachievement and stages that I havepassed through to turn my dream ofpursuing my education inPharmaceutical Chemistry into a real-

ity! With confidence I can say that Iexperienced the best learning andpolishing of not only my skills but mypersonality in the UK. Apart from theacademic side, I learnt a lot from theuniversity staff and society in general.I found the people to be very support-ive and helpful, especially towards mywife and children who were accompa-nying me during the period".

A pleasant CheveningMuhammad Atif Sheikh is currently

the General Secretary of the BritishAlumni Association Pakistan (BAAP),

Chairperson SADF (South AsianDisability Forum), and DirectorDevelopment Disabled Peoples'International Pakistan PresidentSTEP (Special Talent ExchangeProgram). He pursued his studies inDevelopment Studies under theChevening Scholarship Programmeby the British Council.

"After getting the prestigious BritishChevening Scholarship I decided tostudy Masters in DevelopmentStudies," Atif said. "I came here inSeptember 2007 with an aim to learnthe latest trends in development andto share my thoughts with counter-parts in UK and from different parts ofthe world so that I can do somethingmeaningful for the marginalized com-munities in my own country. Livingand studying here in diversified envi-ronment I feel that my dream is goingbe realized."

The law of successSamiha Sumar graduated from the

London School of Economics (LSE)as a LLB student recently. She select-ed LSE as her preferred universitychoice because of the high ranking ofits law programme.

"I feel experience makes a personmore responsible for the decisionsthey make and I feel myself a moreconfident person now," Samihaexplained. "Here in London, I havenow learnt to listen and respect oth-ers' views and opinions. I advise stu-dents pursuing a UK education to dosome research, attend educationalfairs before choosing a university forstudies. I prefer traditional campusuniversities as they provide a sense oftogetherness and the campus envi-ronment is great to meet new people.Once you have settled in, you will findthat studying in the UK is a greatlearning experience - not just aca-demically but also in that it widensyour perspective of the real world,"she added.

The global scenario of socio-economic development is changing with the belief thatknowledge breeds physical capital as the source of present and future wealth. Technologyserves as the driving force behind this process of change. Information Technology,Biotechnology and advancements in other disciplines are leading to remarkable develop-ments in the way we like to work and progress. As knowledge becomes increasinglyimportant, so does higher education. Developing countries need to educate more of theiryoung people to reach the global standards. The quality of knowledge generated withinhigher educational institutions and its compatibility to the wider economy is becomingincreasingly critical for national competitiveness.

WE, at BUITEMS, realize that education must result in bringing more happiness andmeaning into life. It ought to be a continuous endeavour to minimize the gap between real-

ity and the ideal. There should be a sense of fulfilment and achievement, a sense of selfsatisfaction on the attainment of our academic goals. Only such an education carries thepromise of making one feel elevated and elite in the real sense. 'Fostering of the freedevelopment of the personality through the unhampered unfolding of innate qualities'(Mannheim) would only be possible if diverse fields of advancement of the innate facul-ties are made available to the students in the light of the needs of the occupational sec-tors. BUITEMS has been living up to the tradition of continuous expansion of the fields ofacademic and technical endeavours. All such domains of academic pursuits synchronizewith the regional needs and aspirations of the communities.

BUITEMS has maintained the tempo of widening the horizons by adding new programsof study to the list of programs offered to the students. With our clearly defined vision andin the light of our avowed objective of inculcating in our students the traits of open-mind-ed self reliance and professionalism, BUITEMS created new departments i.e. TheDepartment of Microbiology & Pathology, The Department of Plant Sciences & Informaticsand The Department of Fine Arts.

It is gratifying to note that BUITEMS has lived up to the expectations of the public. Theuniversity is focusing on exposing the students to the perspectives of the global society,

through the approaches of in-depth learning, meaningful research and integration of thestudents' community into academic network available abroad. Availability of the video-conferencing facility at the university is proving to be of immense advantage both for theteachers and the taught.

BUITEMS has been continuously focusing on the need of integration between the pro-grams of study offered by the university and their practical application in professionalareas. It was noticed that great advancement had occurred in the field of Biotechnologyand there was immense demand of specialized skills in that domain. Side by side with theincrease in the number of programs offered at the university, there has been continuousfocus on strengthening and upgrading the laboratories in all the faculties.

The establishment of more than a dozen new laboratories in faculty of Engineering andthe faculty of Life Sciences and Informatics is a significant accomplishment on the part ofthe university authorities. New equipment installed in the laboratories is not only facilitat-ing the instructional process at the university but is also helping in enhancing the tempoof research activities and research based publications. The university has so far produced1608 graduates and 601 post graduates in disciplines of Business Management,Economics, Environmental Management, Biotechnology, Computer Science, ComputerEngineering, Electronic Engineering, Petroleum & Gas Engineering, ChemicalEngineering, Information Technology, International Relations, Physics, Mathematics andPsychology. BUITEMS graduates are serving different sectors of the national economywith great confidence and competence. All of them have been giving proof of their mas-tery over the fields of their respective professions and have added to the good repute ofthe university. This has been possible only because BUITEMS strictly follows the philos-

ophy of quality, hard work, intellectual rigor and character building of her students. Thereis, all around, a congenial atmosphere for meaningful technical and professional learning. The university authorities are committed to developing and sustaining an environmentconducive to quality and excellence in teaching, learning, research through formal andinformal techniques. Our mandate at the British Council is to encouragecultural exchange through providing educational opportunityto young people - the leaders of tomorrow. The UK has acenturies old tradition of education that is constantly evolvingand is valued and the world over but especially so in Pakistanwith its strong ties with the UK. Combining a great heritagewith a dynamic academic culture, studying in the UK offersexceptional opportunities. AboutSZABIST

Page 11: Higher Education Gazette 2011

If I ask you about business education, how do you seethe role of business education in country's prosperity?

Business education has to remain responsive to thechanging economic needs. It cannot rest on the achieve-ments of the 1980s and 1990s. It has to be constantlyand continuously improved and upgraded so that webecome capable to meet the challenges of 2020s, andremain relevant. Knowledge is becoming quite obsoleteand like machinery, the obsolescence rate is quite rapidso we have to recharge, learn about the new tools andtechniques and have to transfer them to our students.

Strategies: We should have a review process of the cur-riculum, its contents, teaching methodology by the out-siders i.e. our stakeholders including;

•the employers •the alumni who now realize what they have learnt and what they are missing •International and Pakistani experts who can advise on how things can be improved

This is the process we follow every year and we hopethat other institutions will follow that too. We are constant-ly in touch with the stakeholders to get feedback from themas how we can improve our courses offered at IBA to makeour students more competent and valuable for the market.

There is a general perception that foreign graduatesare much more dynamic and vision oriented in theirapproach as opposed to local graduates. When willPakistan be fully equipped to compete with universi-ties from the developed world?

This is not correct. I'll give you an example here, lastmonth 3 appointments to top positions were made byMultinational Corporations in Pakistan including Shell,P&G, Reckitt and Benckiser. All the three appointees i.e. 3Managing Directors and the country heads are IBA gradu-ates, they are not foreign graduates. So if you look aroundthe country, most of the MNCs and large national corpora-tions are headed by IBA graduates and alumni. So I don'tthink this proposition is substantiated by evidence.

Career counseling is an avenue that has not beenexplored to its full potential by most business schoolsof the country. What kind of career counseling frame-work would you recommend to ensure job placementfor students?

IBA always had a very strong counseling service. Webring in interviewers from February onwards every year.We have mock interview sessions by our alumni, we haveresume writing sessions. We publish graduate directories, circulate it to the employers and we are constantly in touchwith the employers, exploring the possibilities for intern-ships and placement in the companies. Our counselingservice disseminates information about job appointmentsavailable, guides them and our students get benefited fromit. Also we get a lot of mentoring from our alumni, they pro-vide free of cost mentoring service and advice to the stu-dents. So this also becomes a plus point for IBA graduates.

The brain drain continues to pose a serious threat toPakistan with most quality graduates taking off forgreener pastures. What is the long-term solution tothis dilemma?

It depends on what the national economic situation lookslike. I remember when I was the Governor of the CentralBank, a lot of Pakistanis who were working in the MiddleEast, United States and U.K in the financial services indus-try returned to Pakistan because they saw career opportu-nities for themselves in the privatized banking industry. And even today you can find that they are occupying verysenior positions and one of the reasons why the bankingsector is strong is that we have very high quality of humanresources. So if the conditions do improve, our people willcome back. But if the economic conditions deteriorate thenyou are right the brain drain will take place. So this is verymuch dependent on the general economic conditions.

How will you differentiate between an IBA graduateand graduate of any other business school ofPakistan?

We consider ourselves to be the pioneer in business

education because we were set up in 1957 and have ademonstrated and proven track record. There are very fewinstitutions in Pakistan; you can count on fingertips, whohave maintained a record of excellence for over 50 years. So that speaks for itself as to what IBA is all about. Thereason I accepted this position is because of the reputationand standing of the IBA and my mission is to transform itinto a global business school rather than just confined toPakistan.

Is Pakistani media playing a vital role in promotingeducation in Pakistan? What forces are necessary foryouth to increase their motivation level?

I am sorry to say, there's too much of negativism andcynicism that's not good for the youth. The youth of thiscountry needs something good to look forward to. If all theyhear on these talk shows is despondency and despair, what will happen to their mindset? And I see this everyday, because my students reproduce the views which they

have heard on the talk shows. This is not a good sign forany country. When I visit India I find there is real and gen-uine self confidence, an attitude that we can do it, we canbecome an economic super power - even the youthbelieves in that because the media is playing that role. Here anything which we do is just because of America orIMF or some outsiders and anything wrong that happens isdue to us.

Given your role as the Dean of IBA, what is your long-term vision for the Institute and what will you outlineas your key areas of focus in your roadmap for theIBA?

In 2009 I outlined a strategy for IBA which can be seenon our website. Our vision is to be ranked among top 100global business schools and in top 10 regional businessschools in Asia. That's our vision! Now translating thatvision into action, we have formulated the strategy and werevisit it annually to fine tune and adjust it in light of theevolving circumstances. The salient features of this strat-egy are:

•Improve the academic quality of our programs bybringing in the latest knowledge tools for our students. So what we teach at IBA should be consistent withwhat is being taught in other top business schools.

•Improve and upgrade the quality of faculty becauseour students are very bright so we owe it to them thatwe should have very high caliber faculty. We areinvesting a lot in faculty development. Since last 3years we have added almost 12 PhDs mostly foreigndegree holders on our faculty and now we have 27

PhDs as full time faculty. We have top industry lead-ers teaching as visiting faculty.

•Physical Infrastructure: we have buildings which wereconstructed for 200 students and 20 faculty members.Today we have 200 faculty members and 2000 stu-dents so the space is inadequate. So we are investing3.4 billion rupees in renovation, modernization, upgradation, and construction of new facilities. We willhave new academic blocks, new student centre, sports ground, faculty lounges, faculty offices, semi-nar rooms, breakout rooms etc. all kinds of thingswhich will make a good university.

•Technology: ICT facilities that enable e-learning, dis-tance education, video-conferencing, networking arebeing provided to our students and faculty.

So these are some of the pillars of our strategy. Themost important in my view is that we give 350 scholarshipsto the poor students. Our motto is that any student whogets admitted to IBA on merit is assured financial assis-tance.

We have a National and Sindh talent hunt programswhereby we go to backward districts of Pakistan and bringin talented students, train them at our own expense for 2months in English, Mathematics, just grooming them, tak-ing them around Karachi, presentational skills so that theyare well prepared to appear at our entry exams. If they areselected and we are proud that 11 students last year wereselected from one such group, we provide all expense paidscholarship to them for four years. We are very much con-scious of the fact that higher education can be a source ofmobility for the poor families. So this is something we arereally proud of.

The youth is getting increasingly disillusioned with thepresent state of lawlessness, unemployment and lackof opportunity within the country. What do you thinkthe role of educationists should be during this difficulttime and how would you guide them as a mentor?

You're right, but I think there is a mismatch as far asunemployment is concerned. We are producing people forwhom there is no demand in the country but at the sametime there are acute shortages of nurses, paramedics, air-conditioner mechanics, plumbers, and technicians of allsorts.

There are companies and people who are looking forthese technicians and expert skills. Our engineering grad-uates are only a few thousands; we should produce 100sof thousands of graduates in engineering science, technol-ogy and computer sciences.

Our students are more and more opting for commerce, business administration as these are soft subjects andthey want to have shortcuts and rise to the top positions. That's not how things should work.

They should work hard and they should go in the fieldsfor which there is a huge demand. I.T companies arecomplaining that they can't find qualified and talentedyoung people. I had a meeting with all Chief Executivesof I.T companies 3 days ago and one of the biggest prob-lems they are facing is that they can't find highly quali-fied I.T experts.

Students think that I.T has no demand however it isjust that they have to be creative. Only having bookishknowledge would not be enough for that field. In shortthere's very odd situation; unemployment and skills inheavy demand - a big mismatch.
