TYPES OF HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES

FOUNDATION DEGREES (FdA/ FdSc) and BSc (Hons) TOP-UP YEARS:Foundation Degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a full Honours Degree. For example, an FdA is equivalent to the first two years of a BA and an FdSc is equivalent to the first two years of a BSc.

Students can now also progress from some FdSc courses to a third BSc Top-Up year here at the College.

• Combine academic study with practical and technical training for specific careers

• Designed and delivered in partnership with employers

• Equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree (Level 5)

• Allow progression to the final year of an Honours Degree (on passing the course)

• Assessed through exams, practical work and on-the-job training

• Awarded by our partner universities, City University London or London Metropolitan University

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES/ HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMAS (HNCS/ HNDS):

• Combine theory and practice to develop practical and technical skills for a particular field of work

• Designed in collaboration with industry experts• Hands-on approach that is highly valued by

employers• HNCs (Level 4) are equivalent to the first year

STUDENT FINANCEFinancial support is available through:• Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of your

course (full and part-time students)• Maintenance Loan to help with living costs

(full-time students only)• Maintenance Grant to help with living costs

(full-time students only)• Special Support Grant instead of a Maintenance

Grant if you qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit (full-time students only)

• Extra help may also be available if you are on a low income, have children or dependent adults, or are disabled

You pay back Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans, including interest. You only make repayments when your income is over £21,000 a year. You do not have to pay back grants.

OUR CENTRESWe’ve launched Higher Education learning hubs especially for our HE students. Located at our Camden Road and Angel sites, the spaces have been designed for you, creating an environment where you can socialise as well as access support, the library and quiet study areas.

WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?This unique crime scene investigation course (CSI) prepares you for a range of careers in law enforcement, the criminal justice system and laboratory-based professions, including as a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) or a Police Officer.

Delivered in collaboration with the British Transport Police Forensic Science Unit and Complete Forensic Consultancy, this course provides the skills employers demand.

Providing training in the most up-to-date methods of crime scene forensic theory and practice, this course includes practical laboratory sessions as well as the opportunity to participate in field exercises, role-play scenarios with police staff and forensic projects, including obtaining forensic evidence and presenting in a court of law.

Our replica crime scenes enable you to gain practical experience obtaining forensic evidence from a range of scenarios, including household and fire settings.

WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?This Engineering Foundation Year is the first year of a four-year BEng Degree course or a five-year MEng Degree course and is ideal for individuals who intend to study for an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic, Biomedical, Telecommunications or Computer Systems Engineering.

This course is suitable if you do not quite meet the standard A Level requirements for direct entry to university, or if you are returning to education and need to bring your technical knowledge and study skills up to date before embarking on a degree course.

WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?This course leads to a rewarding career as a Dispensing Optician, a specialist trained to dispense and fit ophthalmic lenses and spectacle frames and to recognise basic ocular disorders.
