Let me introduce you to the Higher Education prospectus for Wakefield College. We have over 40 university level courses, across a range of subjects, which are accredited in conjunction with the University of Huddersfield and Teesside University and we also have a long history of working with Pearson Edexcel.

Here at College we think of ourselves as an alternative Higher Education provider, one that puts you, the learner, at the heart of everything we do. This prospectus gives you all the information you need in order to make one of the most significant decisions of your life.

Embarking on undergraduate study locally, instead of travelling further afield, is a choice which an increasing number of students are recognising as both attractive and practical.

We ensure that delivery meets our core values of Employability, Affordability and Excellence and we offer outstanding resources, such as our new-build projects and industry-standard facilities, which will enhance your real world learning experience.

You will find that many of our courses are designed in conjunction with employers, reaffirming our commitment to place current industry skills at the forefront of delivery. At the same time, we are keen to support students in achieving their academic potential by ensuring that contact time with tutors is maximised. As a result of this combination, we have a proud history of achievement, with results improving year-on-year and alumni progressing to a broad range of destinations from postgraduate study to work within blue chip companies.

Come and visit us to find out about Higher Education choices, talk to staff and students and get a feel for what we have on offer - we are sure you will be impressed.

Employability, Excellence and Affordability – the three core values of the University Centre Wakefield

Wakefield College works in partnership with universities. Choosing to study a university level course at a college is a cost effective option that will provide you with an equally valid qualification.

7Course Information 01924 789111 / wakefield.ac.uk/he

Our overall satisfaction results in the ‘National Student Survey’ are consistently some of the highest for any university or college in the region - we scored 87% in the 2013 survey.

91% of our students said they wanted to study locally

87% of our students said Wakefield College was their first choice

95% of HE students say College feels welcoming

So you’re nearly ready to leave school or college, and your A Levels, Advanced Level Diplomas or BTECs are just about done and dusted.

If you’re considering university, the £9,000 fees and living costs might have made you think again, but you may still want to continue your education – perhaps because you know that people with degrees or similar higher-level qualifications have the advantage in the labour market. But what to study, and where? These are pretty big decisions, and not easy to make. All those subjects to choose from, and all those universities and colleges jumping up and down shouting “pick me!” An option you could consider would be to study a college-based undergraduate degree course at Wakefield College.

If tuition fees are not a concern then you might be considering going away to university. You may be ready to spread your wings, fly the nest and embark on the adventures of university life in a new place. But there’s always a flipside, isn’t there? What about the homemade Sunday dinners, freshly laundered clothes and clean bedding. And then, there’s that little thing called “money” …

The alternative is to stay local and continue your studies at the University Centre Wakefield. You’ll get the same quality education, with smaller class sizes than most universities, but keep the home cooking and the free laundry service!

I have been at Wakefield College for nearly four years and I am very happy with the courses I have studied. The teaching on my course is exceptional and I feel that I have the support and facilities within College to help me through my course.

Decisions, decisions … life after Level 3Why study with us?

The part-time option

We’re not all fresh-faced eighteen-year-olds, are we? You may already have launched your career, and whether you’re just at the start of an exciting journey or well on the way to your destination, qualifications gained at the University Centre Wakefield by the part-time route can boost your prospects. We offer a huge range of courses leading to professional qualifications in marketing, procurement and supply, business and management, and accounting, and classes are in many cases offered in the evenings. These qualifications are awards of bodies which are industry-leaders, such as CIM, CIPS, CMI, ILM and AAT. We also offer part-time options for many of our HNC/HND, foundation degree and degree courses, typically involving study at College on one day per week. You’ll get a qualification accredited by Edexcel or by respected universities like Huddersfield or Teesside, but delivered flexibly so that you won’t have to interrupt your career.

Being a mature student I was worried about returning to study but the tutors have been very helpful and I am really enjoying my course and would recommend it to any older students.

Bachelor’s degrees can be gained in many different areas, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Bachelor of Law (LLB). It can be difficult trying to understand what all these educational abbreviations and terms stand for and the differences between the many qualifications that are available to you. Therefore, we thought it might be useful if we included a ‘Jargon Buster’ to help you understand what all these things mean.

Foundation Degrees … the factsYour guide to qualifications

• Foundation degrees or Fds are university- level qualifications which combine academic study with work-based learning. They are designed in partnership with employers, but validated and awarded by universities.

• A full-time Fd is usually two years long, and designed to be slightly different in character from a traditional three-year honours degree, with an emphasis on subjects which are directly relevant to specific sectors. Fd students often spend some time in the workplace and some time in university, which is intended to make it easier to find work in that sector at the end of the course.

• As well as meeting skills shortages, Fds are designed to make Higher Education more accessible to people from lower-income backgrounds and mature students who are already in work.

• Higher National Diplomas or HNDs differ from Fds in that they are awarded by Edexcel rather than a university. Both HNDs and Fds offer the option to progress on to a ‘top-up’ course, which will usually be a year of full-time study (or part- time equivalent) leading to a first degree such as BSc (Hons).

BTEC Higher Apprenticeships offer UK learners better access to stronger career progression routes to higher-level employment. They combine respected BTEC Higher Nationals, BTEC Professionals or Edexcel Diplomas, on-the-job training and industry endorsement from employers, leaders and professional bodies. Delivered at Levels 4 and above, they offer a clear path to employment and a practical route to Higher Education qualifications.

• Delivered at Levels 4 and above, BTEC Higher Apprenticeships represent the highest level available in the Apprenticeship framework

• They are developed in consultation with leading industry employers to meet their future skills needs

• BTEC Higher Apprenticeships are endorsed by professional industry bodies such as the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (ImechE), Society of Biology, Royal Society of Chemistry, PRCA and the Royal Aeronautical Society

• They're a practical alternative to gaining a degree-level education, and can also be used as a route into a full honours degree

• They combine on and off-the-job training.

To succeed on any course, you’ve got to put the hours in. Any qualification worth having requires time and effort and we can’t do it for you, but there are ways we can help. Wakefield College has a long history of providing first-rate support for its students to ensure they get the most out of their studies. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) gave us the highest rating for our management of both standards and quality and at our latest Ofsted inspection in March 2014 they praised us for our “Excellent levels of support”. Putting our students at the heart of everything we do is our priority.

Counselling and Welfare ServiceSometimes it’s good to talk, and our Counselling Service, staffed by professionals, is on hand when problems arise. The Service offers one-to-one support to students, a safe place to talk in private and get things in perspective. It isn’t advice, and you won’t be judged but helped to find your own solutions. The counsellors can also point you in the right direction for advice on practical welfare matters such as accommodation and benefits. If you would like to make an appointment, leave a message on our 24 hour answering machine: 01924 789226, phone or text: 07713 391716, 07713 391717 or email counselling@wakefieldacuk

Your Personal TutorThe key figure in guiding you through your studies is your Personal Tutor. You’ll get to know your Personal Tutor pretty well during your time at Wakefield University Centre, with regular meetings to plan and review your personal, professional and academic progress. These discussions will ensure you’re getting the support you need to succeed.

Safeguarding Our Policy for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults ensures that everyone attending activities in the College does so in a safe and secure environment. It sets out the steps we take to protect vulnerable adults and young people and the procedures we would use to deal with any issues. The Policy is published on the College website and the staff and student Intranet.

Additional Learning Support ServiceThe Additional Learning Support Service has helped many students to achieve their potential by ensuring they have received the right kind of support to meet their specific needs. Ofsted inspectors commented on the College’s ‘excellent levels of support’ in March 2014.We would recommend that you discuss any disability or additional support need as soon as possible, so that we can make any reasonable adjustments necessary and give you advice and guidance. For example, if you need help in exams, such as extra time, a reader or a scribe, it’s important that you tell your tutor in good time so they can make the necessary arrangements for you. All HE students with disabilities need to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance as it funds the support we are able to give you during your time at College. DSA is a non-means tested grant and we will support you with the application process. We will also help you to plan the extra support you need and advise your tutors on how to make the right adjustments for you. Please telephone 01924 789585 or email Zoe at [email protected] or Andrew at [email protected] before you enrol to ensure that support is in place at the start of your course.

Additional Support

Disabled Students’ Allowances provide help towards the additional costs that a student may face as result of their disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty.Childcare Grant: this grant helps with childcare costs for children under 15, or under 17 if they have special educational needs.Parents’ Learning Allowance: this is for full-time students with children to help with their learning costs.Adult Dependants’ Grant: this is for full-time students in Higher Education with an adult who depends on them financially.

Student finance can consist of grants, loans, bursaries and/or allowances, and is intended to help you with the two main types of costs you will have while you are studying in Higher Education: tuition fees and living costs (maintenance).

You should note that if you are studying on a part-time basis you are only entitled to loans for tuition fees, not for living costs.

What are Student Loans?

You’re entitled to loans for tuition fees, and also for living costs if you are a full-time student. This is money you will have to pay back but don’t worry as these are not like bank loans and you only start paying back once you have finished your course and are earning over £21,000.

What are Student Grants? (full-time students only)

A student grant is money for living costs that is given to you if you meet the eligibility criteria, for example, if your household income falls under or between certain thresholds. Unlike the loans, this does not have to be paid back if you complete your course. Special Support Grant: if you are a full-time student you may get a Special Support Grant instead of a Maintenance Grant if you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit. The amount you get is the same as the Maintenance Grant. Please note: Higher Education student support is limited to a first undergraduate degree or other first HE qualification, with just a few exceptions. Go to www.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information and to complete the application form.

Some of the courses in this prospectus are eligible for the Government’s 24+ Advanced Learning Loans scheme. The advantage of taking out an Advanced Learning Loan is that you won’t have to start repaying the loan until April 2016 and then only if you are earning over £21,000 a year.

Equality & Diversity

Higher Education Prospectus 201524

How we demonstrate our commitment

The Single Equality Scheme sets out the College’s approach to ensuring that all College users are treated fairly and that all students have maximum opportunities to succeed. The scheme addresses all nine protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010: sex, race, disability, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment and age.It also sets out the College’s Equality Objectives, in the form of a detailed plan setting out real actions the College will undertake to address the needs of specific groups and improve outcomes for all. The Single Equality Scheme is available on the College’s website www.wakefield.ac.uk

Measuring our progress

The effectiveness of the Scheme is monitored through a comprehensive framework of measures which involves regular collection, reporting and analysis of staff and learner data on the basis of a range of demographic factors. A summary of this is available on the College website. An annual report on equality and diversity, including monitoring data, is considered by the College’s Board of Governors.“As a result of close monitoring, managers have taken successful action to reduce gaps in achievement between different groups of students.” Ofsted 2014

Students’ responsibilities

Students also have a responsibility to promote and embed equality and diversity. The College Charter sets out what students can expect from the College, and the Student Agreement, which everyone must sign, details minimum expectations of students in relation to equality and diversity. Students can get actively involved in promoting equality by becoming one of the representatives on the Students’ Union responsible for promoting Equality and Diversity.

Care Leavers

Wakefield College has been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark for supporting Care Leavers who wish to enter Higher Education. The commitment seeks to facilitate an increase in the number of Care Leavers entering Higher Education, help institutions to identify how best to support Care Leavers, raise awareness of the needs of this group of students, and enable Care Leavers to make the most of their time in Higher Education and complete their courses successfully. For more information go to www.buttleuk.org

Wakefield College aims to become a fully inclusive organisation, eliminating discrimination, promoting equality and embracing diversity in all that we do.

We celebrate the rich variety of people who make up the College community, from different cultures and different ethnic backgrounds. We have put in place policies, training and procedures to make equality and diversity a reality for the whole College community.

The college promotes equality and diversity very well and enables students of all abilities and backgrounds to engage in college life and flourish.

I’m 23 and have been a professional dancer for over five years now. I’ve started two small companies: Creative Creatures which provides dance-based classes, workshops and events around the region; and The Riot Sessions which is a breakdance and extreme events company. I ran my first event last year in August at Upton skate park which was a great success.

Dance has enabled me to travel the world and meet some fantastic people, but I’m aware that performing isn’t a career that lasts forever. That’s why I chose to study management and business enterprise at Wakefield College because it gives me skills I can use both now and in the future.”

Undertaking the Foundation Degree in Young Children’s Learning and Development has bolstered both my knowledge and understanding of the early years sector and the breadth of my childcare work experience. The blended learning programme of work-based learning and part-time attendance has enabled me to balance my family life and manage a childcare organisation while gaining a university accredited qualification. I’d been out of education for over five years when I discovered this course, but wanting a change of career, I decided to go for it. I’d always had an interest in Art and Design, and was a bit of a geek when it came to computers, so I thought the course content would suit me perfectly.

Not only have I learnt how to code from scratch, I’m also constantly learning and improving on my design techniques. The best thing is, the course doesn’t stop at web design - I’ve also learnt how to design for a variety of other mediums.

The course has prepared me for employment and given me an amazing network of professionals to draw on. Considering the fact that when I started the course I had almost no experience in the field, it says a lot for the programme that even before I’ve finished I’ve gained employment.”

I progressed from a BTEC Level 3 course to the HND in Dance. It was nice to stay local and in a familiar environment, and where I could continue to build relationships with my tutors. This year we’ve moved to the new Performing Arts Centre at the Waterton Building. It’s great to have our own city centre building, and the facilities are easily as good as those at Thornes Park.

The HND course doesn’t ignore theory, which is important, but it’s a very practical course with an emphasis on taking part in a diverse range of performances. I’ve learned something new in every unit I’ve completed, and also had the chance to reflect on what I’ve learned. The tutors are really helpful and absolutely passionate about their art forms, and the visits from external professional artists have broadened our horizons. The course sets you up for a range of careers in dance, and I’m already planning to top it up to a BA.”

I originally joined the course as a guitarist so I could hide in the background, but when the tutors found out I could sing, they pushed me to the front of the stage. I have always loved singing, but was never confident enough to develop my skills in this direction. Now I can confidently write songs, sing in front of crowds and put myself forward for projects I would have run a mile from before.

My tutors are brilliant – really friendly and approachable. They all have their own styles of teaching, which keeps lessons varied and interesting, and they’re all practising musicians too. We have plenty of opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, and this helps us to get used to working in different venues and environments.

Since joining the course, I’ve become part of a heavy rock band, Temples Fall, and have also developed my own home recording studio using techniques and recommendations from tutors and other students. I’d been out of education for 13 years when I decided the time was right for me to pursue my ambition of a career as a police officer. I enrolled at Wakefield College because the fees are affordable and the quality of teaching is high. The support is excellent - you have regular contact with your tutors and smaller group sizes than in most universities. The course hasn’t just enhanced my understanding of the theory behind law and criminology, it has also provided me with the opportunity to further my career. I am very proud of my achievements so far and joining the Police Community Volunteer team at West Yorkshire Police is the first step to getting into the Police Service.”

EngineeringPart-time Courses

I decided to do the HNC Mechanical Engineering to increase my knowledge of the industry I work in. I work for Craven Fawcett, part of Group Rhodes, one of Europe’s largest Original Equipment Manufacturers in its field. I am a Business Development Executive and recognised that the HNC Mechanical Engineering would be beneficial to my role and give me a better understanding of the industry, which would in turn help me to provide a better service to our clients and increase potential business opportunities.

My employer has been extremely supportive and flexible whilst I have been studying; I have also been training for the Commonwealth Games for the Ladies Double Trap in Clay pigeon shooting and I’ve just been ranked 18th in the World in the World English Sporting competition Ladies category and my employer has been very supportive about that too. So, working, studying and competing has kept me very busy and the support I have had from my tutors and the College has been very important and really helped me.”

My self-esteem was not good before I joined Wakefield College; I was conscious that I had not achieved much in the way of academic qualifications at school or anywhere else for that matter. Now, thanks to the amazing support from my Wakefield College tutors, my confidence, sense of achievement and pride in my own accomplishments have all greatly increased, and I also hold a teaching qualification which enables me to help young students to make the same sort of progress themselves.

I would recommend this course to anyone who is undecided as to whether to enter Higher Education or not. Wakefield College helped me to help myself."

Professional Courses

I started studying at Wakefield College with the ILM Level 3 Course which helped me to get a promotion a few years ago. Since then I have done the Foundation Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and a BA Honours degree in Business and Management which have both helped me progress in my career and become a manager.

Now I’m doing the CMI Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership which is providing me with a view on the strategic side of management. The assignments are linked to work so the course is valuable for my career development and performance in the workplace. The class sizes at Wakefield College are relatively small which is an advantage because they allow for more one-to-one interaction with the tutors.”

Work-Based Learning

I work as a Quality and Training Officer for Barnsley Council. To safeguard my career prospects I decided to gain a Level 4 qualification in Learning and Development and looked around at various providers. I chose Wakefield College on the recommendation of colleagues and because the course at Wakefield seemed the best fit with my job role.

I can’t speak too highly of my Assessor. She was friendly and approachable, gave invaluable feedback and had a gift for making difficult concepts easy to understand. I didn’t have to attend College - she came to my workplace for meetings and based a lot of my work around assignments. I hadn’t studied for a number of years, but my Assessor made the task much less daunting than it might have been."
