 The Higher Learning Student Photo Exhibition and Silent Auction featuresphotographs taken by Higher Learning students documenting their summerlearning experiences.

Students’ pictures will be displayed and judged by professional photographers, with awards given to the students of winning photos.

Professional artwork will be displayed and presented for auction. Some of theitems include a heart shield by Linda Van Hart, a photograph of BB King byVictor McTeer, and art by Jessica Watson, Lyndi McNulty, Pam Zappardino,Gordon Wickes, and others!

All proceeds go toward Higher Learning programs and to sponsor a student forinternational travel.

Higher Learning's experiential education program is holistic in design. Theprogram's active, hands-on approach moves youth of color beyond the familiarboth locally and globally in order to nurture a desire for life long learning.

In addition to sharpening academic skills beyond the standard schoolcurriculum, Higher Learning's programming integrates important 21st centuryskills like team work, creativity, ingenuity, and global awareness (along withreading, writing and speaking) in the context of real life situations. Theseexperiences equip students with knowledge that will serve them well in both

the classroom and the real world.

Youth who complete the Higher Learning Program will develop:

A habit of thinking, inquiring, and challenging default assumptions

A respect for and better understanding of their responsibility to themselves,family, and community

An understanding of the relationship between personal experiences andcollective social issues

A better understanding of their relationship to and interconnectedness with theUnited States and the world

Confidence, motivation, and a sense of empowerment; they will take steps toensure positive, productive, and civic minded life choices, including thoserelated to health and wellness, financial security and independence,community building, and self-presentation

Literacy, communication, foreign language, team building, and thinking andreasoning skills

Creativity, motivation, and greater success in school

Improved occupational and educational choices and opportunities

 Target Population

Higher Learning currently serves youth of color ages 11-17 in the Marylandarea, particularly those in Carroll County where the program is located. OurBaltimore program will launch Fall 2010.

“Atlanta Clouds” is from mypersonal collection It is one of myearlier photographs – and I thoughtcollectors might be interested in oneof my oldest framed photographs.

I’m honored to donate it to HigherLearning to support young adultslearning leadership skills and making a difference in ourcommunity by way of their creativity.
