Whenitinvolvescontinuouslycontrollingthespeedofhigh-ratinginductionandsynchronousmotorswithahightorqueandlowstatorfrequencies,thenSINAMICSSL150cycloconverterswiththyristorstacksaretheoptimumchoice.Theyareimplementedasthree-phasethyristorbridgesina6-or12-pulsecon-nection.Theysetthemselvesapartasaresultofthesimpledesignutilizingarel-ativelylownumberofsemiconductors.Asaconsequence,theSINAMICSSL150hasahighefficiencyandahighdegreeofreliability.

Withoutanyadditionalcosts,theinher-entcircuitprincipleofthecycloconvertermakesitsuitableforfour-quadrantoper-ation–i.e.drivingandbrakinginbothdirections.Theoutputfrequencyistypi-callybetween40and44%ofthelinefrequency.Open-loopandclosed-loopcontrolandthyristormonitoringforthecompletedriveareimplementedusingcomponentsfromtheSINAMICSsystem.Thethyristorsarecontrolledandmoni-toredoptoelectronicallyviafiber-opticcables.Theheatfromthepowercircuitisdissipatedusingthecabinetfans.
