“The Best Family TraditionsStart in the Kitchen.”Start in the Kitchen.”

When Gary and Kim Nave opened their new restaurant The Dam Grill, at 15490 E TX 29 in Buchanan Dam, they said they wanted to provide locals with a comfortable place to enjoy some delicious food.

“After moving to the Kingsland area in March 2011 from San Antonio, my wife and I came across the perfect location for a little country style grill,” Gary said.

The restaurant opened last month with a full menu complete with fresh, mouth-watering dishes such as cheese-burgers, chicken and meatball sand-wiches, chicken strips and more.

And the owners work to make the meals affordable for all customers.

“Our prices are what you would ex-pect to see in a small community type grill. Most items are under $6 with our highest item at only $8.95,” Gary said.

“We have custom burgers, hot sandwiches, a homemade chili that I must say is perfect on cool or rainy days, and we also do fresh cut fries and we offer sweet potato fries,” he said.

For the main event, hunker down with an always-fresh hamburger or cheeseburger in third-pound, half-pound

or pound burgers. Third-pound burgers start at $4.95 and pound-burgers go to $8.95.

They also serve a patty melt with your choice of Ameri-can, Swiss, cheddar or pepper jack cheese on a third-pound patty topped with grilled onions and squished between sour-dough bread for $4.95.

They also serve chicken, meatball and brisket sandwich-es, and a bacon-loaded grilled cheese all under $6. Fish-n-chips are served Fridays.

Adventurous customers can par-take in “The Dam Grill Challenge.”

“I would like to mention that we do have a little surprise for our guests,” Gary said. “It is a pepper loaded half-pound burger that will light your mouth on fire. It is truly not for beginners. Eat the whole thing and your picture goes on the ‘Wall of Flame.’”

Those who succeed will also re-ceive a “dam” koozie and a free ice cream sandwich. “The Dam Grill Challenge” goes for $7.95.

For dessert, they offer a hot brownie sundae complete with a

warm brownie for $2.50, ice cream sandwiches, scoops of Blue Bell ice cream and cookies and brownies, all under $1.50.

The restaurant is located half a mile east of RR 1431 in Buchanan Dam. Breakfast hours will be added soon.

COURTESY PHOTOAmong the tasty items at The Dam Grill is this cheeseburger with jalapeños.

The Dam Grill Meatball SandwichKey to this recipe is using the proper type of meats. This

recipe will produce enough meatballs to make 5 or 6 subs.

1 pound 90/10 hamburger1 pound Italian sausage (without skin)1/4 medium onion finely chopped2 Tbsp minced garlic1/2 cup fine bread crumbs1 egg1 Tbsp Italian seasoning (McCormick’s works fine)Italian Cheese blend

Sauté onions and garlic with small amount of unsalted but-ter until tender, transfer into a large mixing bowl once done. Add hamburger, Italian sausage, bread crumbs, egg, and Italian seasoning to the mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly.

Form mixture by hand into golf ball size portions.Melt small amount of unsalted butter in large pan.Add the meatballs to the pan and cook on medium heat until

meat is done. (about 15 min)Once the meatballs are done, place in large enough con-

tainer to hold meatballs and sauce. The sauce can be one that you make by scratch, or a store bought marinara should work as well.

To build the sandwich, take a 6 - or 8- inch sub roll, toast lightly. Place warmed meatballs in sub, top with Italian cheese, melt under broiler.

MC O V E RAll aboard for the Hill Country

By Steve Snyder HigHland lakeS newSpaperS

This time of year, the traditional conductor’s cry of “all aboard” can be heard Saturday morn-ings in Cedar Park, as the Hill Country Flyer prepares to head west at the start of an old-fash-ioned round-trip excursion to Burnet.

The trip is one of several different offerings by the Austin Steam Train Association.

At a leisurely pace, the train heads from Cedar Park through Leander, Lib-erty Hill and Bertram, taking a little under two hours. In Burnet, besides dining and shopping in the area of the depot, a mock gunfight is staged.

With more than a dozen cars, it can take a few hundred pas-sengers, and often is at or near capacity.

Young Aylyn Wade was taking her first train ride Feb. 25, along with mother Ken-dra, father Adam and Kendra’s aunt, Nan Barr, all from Georgetown.

“The website attracted us,” Kendra said. They all were looking forward to exploring the scenery along the way.

Alice Black of Franklin, who was riding the train with her husband, Bob, explained how they heard about it.

“We saw it in the Navasota Co-Op Power magazine,” she said. “We just wanted to do this trip, and to look at antique stores, but mostly, we wanted to ride the train.”

Michael Bybel, who moved to Cedar Park from New York with his wife, Elizabeth, a year ago, said he wanted to take his family on a trip like this.

“I brought my family down from New York to take a train through the Hill Country,” he said.

Daughter and son-in-law Ed and Jennifer Lown, and their 3-year-old son Eddie, were appreciative of the ride and the ability to share family time together in a different way.

Eddie, unlike Aylyn, had been on a train be-fore. But, his youthful enthusiasm was still clear.

Not counting out-of-state visitors, passen-gers on the

train were from as far away as the Houston area.

T h e love for the Hill Country Flyer is reflected in the vol-u n t e e r s

who run the trains, too.

Brian Smith, the engineer on the Feb. 25 excursion, like most people with ASTA, is a volunteer. A business analyst, he does not have a professional background in railroads. But, he’s had plenty of training for the position before he started in 1998.

“We do all our on training in house,” he said. “It takes about a year.”

He and other volunteers, many of whom have been with the train for several years, showed their enthusiasm.

“I love working with the people here,” volunteer Clarence Tjossen said after making

boarding announcements. “And the passengers make my day.”

Robert Schoen, officially a brakeman on the trip, has been involved with ASTA for decades.

“I’ve always been interested in trains. I col-lect train memorabilia. I was in Austin the first time we rebuilt No. 767,” he said.

And, he is indeed a jack of all trades.“I’m a licensed engineer. I’m also the chief

operating officer and president,” he said.Schoen lives in Austin,

but also has a summer home in Kingsland, so he said he knows well the value of the train as a tourism venue.

The train takes a leisurely pace on its route, allowing people to enjoy the scenery that Michael Bybel wanted to show his family. Railroad bridges ride high above area creeks, along hill lines and through pastures.

The train is popular in-deed with families.

Jenny Clopton of Ber-tram had a coach car at the front of the train reserved for a very special birthday party for her 4-year-old daughter, Mallorye. Mallorye and young friends were enjoying a Justin Bieber-themed day on the rails. The Austin Steam Train Association charters individual cars or even the entire train.

At the other end, Darren Gulin had his 7-year-old daughter Rachel and 3-year-old son Matthew on the rear platform of the last car, talking with Schoen and taking in the scenery of the route. Rachel said she was looking forward to “a little bit of everything” on the trip.

For adults, besides general relaxation, the excursion is great for train buffs.

The train has cars from historic railroads from around the country, ranging from Santa Fe’s legendary Super Chief through the Denver and Rio Grande Western to the Pennsylvania Railroad and beyond. The final car on the train Feb. 25 was originally a New York Central car, built in the 1920s.

“We’re restoring cars all the time from rail-roads around the coun-try,” Schoen said.

And the cars aren’t the only thing with a slice of history. The de-pot in Bertram, original-ly built in south Texas, is a century old itself, Schoen said.

The relatively slow speed of the train makes it easy to walk from car to car, including to a concession car that has a variety of beverages, snacks and souvenirs.

When the train gets to Burnet, there’s shop-ping and dining in the

area around the square. And, at 1:30 p.m., there’s a mock gunfight with re-enactors using actual pe-

riod revolvers. “Sheriff” Tex Copsetta of Burnet Gunfighters boards the train at Bertram to ex-plain details of the big showdown.

That gunfight is a bit of a melodrama, star-ring the sheriff, saloon girls, a card-sharp lawyer, a bounty hunter and Jake the town drunk. The layover allows about an hour and a half for lunch and shopping time before the gunfight. After that, the train boards for the trip back to Cedar Park.

The Hill Country Flyer offers a variety of seating levels. Cars in the back of the train are “natural,” meaning no climate control, and are priced at $28 for adults. Cars near the front of the train are climate controlled, for a higher price; some front cars have private lounge rooms, at $43 per person.

It runs from January-April and September-November, but the Austin Steam Train Asso-ciation has other excursions.

The Bertram Flyer runs a shorter route, as the name indicated, from Cedar Park to Ber-tram and back, during warmer months.

And, there’s special excursions, too. “Who Shot J.R.?” runs March 17, for example, and the “Holy Ghost Revival Meeting Murder” is later in the year; these two both have a meal on train as part of the offering. The Hill Country Flyer Bluebonnet Festival runs April 14-15 to coincide with Burnet’s Bluebonnet Festival. Twilight Flyers run in summer months and leave Cedar Park at 6 p.m. with a shorter lay-over in Burnet. Yet other special trains go to Bertram’s Oatmeal Festival and Main Street Bethlehem in Burnet.

Artist Maxine Price carves her way into spotlight using a special tool; instead of a brush, she paints with a palette knife and describes her intent as a way to create textures otherwise unattainable by using a brush. No longer satisfied with what she calls “flat painting,” the knife allows her to attain an element of experimentation with each stroke.

“Inspiration comes from many sourc-es including old walls, signs, rocks, di-lapidated buildings and rustic items. I am fascinated with the accidental beauty found in debris,” Price said.

If she has to put a label to define her work, she describes it as “abstract expressionism.”

“I paint in oils with a palette knife on gallery wrapped canvas. I am a layerist and a colorist. I apply thin, under layers of paint, and the paint gets progressively heavier and more textured as more paint is applied. I paint wet into wet so that some of the under layers are left to show through as well as mix with the wet paint applied on top,” she says.

Price admits it requires a delicate touch and knowledge of what one color will do

when mixed with the colors underneath.“I liken the way I paint to putting white

icing on top of a chocolate cake. I often do some mark-making by scratching into the wet surface,” Price said.

Price was born into a military family, which had them on the move quite a bit, and the majority of the time her father

was deployed overseas was spent with her family close to her grandparent’s in Devine, just outside San Antonio.

Some of her earliest memories of drawing are from a kindergarten class-room when her teacher highlighted her work on the class bulletin board. Draw-ing and writing letters helped her close the distance while away from family and friends as she moved through numerous schools.

Painting portraits was a particular spe-cialty, and with her drawing experience, combined with four years of life drawing in college, she became knowledgeable about anatomy and was adept at getting a good likeness in a portrait.

About 20 years ago, her work took a new turn.

“In 1992, I decided to go on a journey and paint more from my imagination. I took many workshops and experimented with a lot of different mediums with the goal of developing a style and method of painting that was not like anyone else’s. When I began experimenting with oils and the palette knife, I knew I had found what I had been searching for,” she said.

Locally, you can find her work on dis-play in Johnson City at Taste, Wine and Art at the Kirchman Gallery.

pHoTo By MarTHa giBsonA friend and fellow artist from Wimberley produced this photo of Maxine Price inside one of Prices’ own paintings from a series titled “Artists and Their Works.”

The award-winning Marksmen Quartet will bring its unique style of bluegrass gospel music to the Highland Lakes Baptist Church on RR 2900 in Kingsland for three revival services on Saturday and Sunday.

The shows will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Marksmen Quartet are based in Mur-rayville, Ga. and originated in 1967 as a south-ern gospel quartet under the direction of Dr. Earle Wheeler.

Through the years, the group’s styles moved to bluegrass gospel and country gospel.

The group has been nominated this year as contemporary Bluegrass Gospel Group by the Society for Preservation of Bluegrass Music, an award they have been awarded four times previously.

The four-time Country Gospel Quartet of the Year winners from the Country Gospel Mu-sic Guild are expected to perform many of their hits songs including He Is I Am, Meet Me In Heaven, Potter’s Wheel, Preach the Cross and Grandpa Was a Farmer.

“We are honored to know that folks draw a blessing out of the talents God gave us to share,” said Wheeler, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest of gospel and bluegrass en-

tertainers. “Each week we share God’s message in song and word wherever He allows us to go and that is what it is all about.”

After more than 40 albums, winning four times as Gospel Bluegrass Band of the Year, the group continues its legendary mu-sical legacy with Earle Wheeler, his son Mark Wheeler, Darrin Chambers, Dav-ey Waller and Mark Autry.

Earle Wheel-er has been with the group since the start in 1961.

He is the son of Marvin Wheel-er, who pastored in and around Gainesville, Fla. for many years, so he knows both the music and the church sides of the music. He sings lead, tenor and baritone and occasionally plays the acoustic bass.

Darrin Chambers can sing any of the four parts and plays bass, guitar and dobro.

Chambers is the son of Keith Chambers,

who played mandolin and sang tenor for the Marksmen for many years.

Darrin Chambers recently recorded a CD project in which he played all of the instruments and sang all four parts on several songs.

Mark Wheeler sings baritone, lead and tenor and plays the acoustic lead and rhythm guitar, and banjo.

Mark Autry is the newest member of the Marksmen Quartet, having started in the spring of 2007. Raised in White County, Ga., he plays bass, some

rhythm guitar and sings lead, baritone and bass on occasion.

Davey Waller hails from Houston, where he played for several years with his family group. He can sing any of the

three top parts and plays mandolin and guitar.Earle Wheeler first began singing in his fa-

ther’s church in Murrayville, Ga. when he was 14, although he remembers making his debut at the age of 4 for his grandfather J.O. Gilstrap in the Methodist Church.
