The local postal boat for central Solund forms a link between the islands in the archipelago in Solund and Askvoll during the summer. The postal boat travels between Hardbakke in Solund and Bulandet in Askvoll, stopping for a half hour on Gåsvær in Solund.

This is a return trip and you can join the boat both from the south via Krakhella and from the north via Askvoll. The round trip corresponds with the express boat service from Bergen to Nordfjord and from Bergen to Sogn. There is no guide onboard. The crew on the postal boat will explain sights as you travel, and pages 4–7 of this brochure provide tips if you plan to spend time in Bulandet and Værlandet.

During the stop on Gåsvær, you can go ashore to buy refreshments. We also recommend lunch/dinner in Nikøy Kafé in Bulandet, or ordering fish soup from Bulandsferie (tel. +47 916 47 196). If you choose an island hopping trip by cycle, you can also buy food at Tante Gry’s Pub in Værlandet.

REGISTRATION: Due to a limited number of spaces on the postal boat, you need to book this trip in advance.

4 SUGGESTED ROUTE BULANDET VED ØYHOPPING

Follow the main road from the shop (9) and up to the right. After approximately 500 metres you will cross a small bridge and on your left you will see an old peoples’ home (8), followed by a nursery school on your right. Keep following the road and you will come to a crossroads with lots of signposts.

If you turn left, you will come to Bulandet community centre (6), housing the community museum with exhibitions from the past and present. Season: 22. June–17. August. Guided tours Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, 13–16. Prices: A: NOK 50, C: NOK 25. In order to get a good overview of the whole of Bulandet, follow the road on past the community centre and take the path up to Halsøy­hågen (14). Here you will find a table and benches, a beautiful view and a map of the islands.

If you take a right turn at the junction, you will find Galleri Havblink (13) where you can purchase unique souvenirs of your trip in Bulandet, and Pernillestø (5) where you can buy fish soup (call and book in advance, tel.: +47 91 64 71 96). You can also go ashore at Pernillestø when you arrive in Bulandet and from here it is only a short walk (approx. 5 minutes) to the Gallery.

At «Hillersøyhaugen» (15) you can watch a sculpture of Berte Hillersøy and Hansine Tistel, that together with the teacher Rogne rescued seven of the crew from the schooner «Gugner» of Tønsberg, februray 1885. The schooner went down at «Sengskjeret» south of Bulandet, after having struggled against a violent storm for several days. For this heroic rescue, Berte (25 years old) and Hansine (21 years old) both got a rescuemedal for noble deed of 2. grade. The sculpture is made by the ceramist Ingun Dahlin and stands on a base of Black Beauty from Værlandet.

Use the day for nature adventures at Værlandet, visit Norsk Sjøfuglsenter and cycle over the bridges to Bulandet. Deliver the bike at the Nikøy shop, before you continue the island hopping with the boat to Solund.

6 BULANDET AND VÆRLANDET

BULANDET IS NORWAYS MOST WESTERLY COMMUNITYand with its multitude of islands it is often called «Venice of the North». Fifteen of the largest islands are populated nowadays, and with the exception of Sandøy, bridges and dams connect them all. The livelihood of the 250 inhabitants is based primarily on a modern fishing industry with fishing vessels and fish factory.

Bulandet’s luxuriant vegetation is a distinguishing feature, its rich flora including the protected Schilla Verna. The landscape in itself is quite unique and different from the rest of Askvoll municipality. Bulandet is flat, characterized by its exposure to severe weather and wind conditions. The geology of Bulandet includes many different types of rock, the most special of which being conglomerate.

At the end of year 2003 the new road Nordsjøporten opened, and then connected Bulandet and Værlandet by 6 new bridges and 5.240 m new road. The road Nordsjøporten is not only important for traffic and communication in the area, but also allows for a fantastic journey through the island kingdom. You can either walk or bicycle over the bridges to Bulandet. Bicycles for rent at Værlandet Handel, Værlandet Gjestehamn or Joker Bulandet. Advanced booking is recommended in the high season.

VÆRLANDETVærlandet has a population of approximately 200. Fishing and fish farming are the most important industries, but both tourism and the export of high quality stone (greenstone breccia) are expanding.

Værøyhamna is the most built­up part of Værlandet. The small bay is lined with picturesque wharfside huts that are still in use for a variety of purposes. At Værlandet Guest harbour (d) there is now a cafè, marina and Norwegian Sea Bird Centre. The centre offers rental equipment and organized tours and activities. Next door you can find equipment for your boat at Værlandet Garnmontering (e). In the harbour you can also see the old woodenboat “Markrelen”, built in 1920. This can be hired for shorter excursions, like to the mountain Alden.

FACTS ABOUT THE GEOLOGY OF VÆRLANDET AND BULANDETNature tells its own story of creation in Bulandet and Værlandet, with unique mountain formations and geology. The movement of the conti­nental plates 400 million years ago resulted in West Norway colliding with Greenland. The crust of the ocean floor was pushed up into moun­tain areas with dimensions similar to the Himalayas today. After this the mountains started to erode and deposits of materials such as scree and sand settled in the river systems in the valleys. In the course of time and as a result of tremendous pressure the chain of mountains was transfor­med into what we know today as greenstone breccia and conglomerate. The former ocean bed crust is now greenstone and provides for 7–8 jobs in connection with the export and processing of natural stone. (b)

7SØRVÆRET NATURE RESERVE AND ALDEN

Several distinctive characteristics have given Sørværet Nature Reserve its status as a protected marshland area. One of these characteristics is its nesting area for sea birds. There is a marked footpath into the area and thorough information is provided about the flora and fauna. Norsk Sjøfuglsenter in Værøyhamna provides detailed information. At Værlandet Gjestehamn you can see sea eagles nest live on a big screen. Close by Værlandet rises the pro n ounced landmark Alden, also known as the ’’Norwegian Horse’’, almost vertically out of the sea level, and visible from more than 100 km out at sea. THE NAVE NORTRAIL AND KLETTANEThe NAVE Nortrail (g) at Værlandet crosses the island from the ferryquay to the Loran C­station at the Westside. The trail mainly follows the old schoolroad between Myrvågen and Sørgarden. The trail brings you in to a ferrytail landscape, as it bends forward through steap mountains and quiet fresh­waters surrounded by the salt Atlantic Sea. The trail is well marked. Detailed description available. The trip takes app. 1,5 hours.

Klettane is the most special landmark at Værlandet. To the top of Høgkletten. There is a chain that secure you a safe trip to this special viewpoint 163 metres above the sea. The trail is connected to the NAVE Nortrail and is marked.

The Norwegian Seabird Centre is a fully modern, interactive science centre for seabirds and can be found next door to Tante Gry’s Pub in Værlandet guest harbour. Pay the centre a visit and get a fascinating insight into the family life of the local eagle couple, Frida and Nils, through liv big screen broadcasts.

It is truly a memorable experience to get so close to the sea eagle with its wings­pan of up to 2.5 metres. Do not forget to bring your camera as you are almost guaranteed some fantastic photographs of both the sea eagle and other animals, on a memorable excursion!

The island of Sørværet has a nature reserve covering unique wetlands and is home to a wide range of different birds and sea animals.

The excursion starts in Værøy harbour and is available all year round.

12 LIGHTHOUSE SAFARI TO UTVÆR

Utvær, located 8 km west of Ytre Sula, is the name of the group of islands furthest west in Norway, with the westernmost lighthouse in the country. It boasts both historical significance and captivating natural surroundings. Every Sunday this summer you can join a lighthouse safari from Hardbakke to Utvær. The trip takes 4 hours with a 2 hour stop on Utvær, including a guided walk round the island and the opportunity to go up to the top of the beautiful lighthouse.

Utvær is an old fishing community. No­one lives there on a permanent basis any more, but a lot of tourists come to visit during the summer. The view from the lighthouse is magnificent. Join us for a walk on the island where you can stroll in the Garden of Eden, visit the ruins of a chapel that was moved in 1718 and see the marks in the mountainside by Vikings sharpening their swords. The most fascinating aspect of the trip, however, is the nature and the ocean – furthest west in Norway.

Utvær is famous in history right back to the Viking Age. In 1066 Harald Hardråde sailed out from Solund when he left to conquer England. 200 vessels plus supply boats and other small craft were gathered together, and the saga says that some of the vessels departed from Utvær. The battle ended with defeat at Stamford Bridge. On the east side of the bay near the Likberget Mountain you can see some marks in the mountainside. The story is that these are marks made by Vikings sharpening their swords before leaving on a raid.

Fishing has always been the main source of income on Utvær. Proximity to the fishing fields made it a centre for seasonal fishing.

The imposing lighthouse was built in 1900, its cast­iron structure towering 31 metres above the top of the moun­tain. The beam of light is projected 45 metres above sea level across the surface of the ocean, blinking every 30 seconds and visible up to 35 km out in the North Sea.

13LIGHTHOUSE SAFARI TO UTVÆR

SAFARI SUMMARYThe trip starts by boat from Hardbakke, the municipal centre of Solund. Depending on the weather conditions, you will go either north or south to Ytre Sula and through the islands of Solund. No stop is planned on the way out to Utvær. On reaching Utvær the boatman will guide you on a walk round the island along the North Sea Trail (Nordsjøløypa). Those who want to will also have the opportunity to go up to the top of the lighthouse. The return route to Hardbakke goes via Notøy, Husøy and Indrevær to Kolgrov, and then on to Hardbakke. No food or beverages are available on the trip, so take something with you if you need it, and remember your camera!

14 THE MILL STONE PARK IN HYLLESTAD

AN AUTHENTIC PRODUCTION LANDSCAPEthat reveals traces of over 1,300 years of quernstone and millstone production. Archaeologists have dated quarrying activities to the 8th century. The last pair of stones were extracted as late as the beginning of the 20th century. In Sweden and Denmark stones from Hyllestad were found in such large numbers that there may well have been organised trade that goes back to the Viking Age.

NORWEGIAN CANDIDATE FOR INSCRIPTION ONUNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LISTThe stone quarries were situated in both arable land and the outlying areas, all the way from the edge of the fjord to the mountain reaches. In this unique production landscape, traces were found of the stones that had been extracted as well as stones that had never been loosened from the bedrock. In some places they appear as circular buttonlike shapes on the sheer rock walls while elsewhere they still remain in place on the quarry floor. Other striking traces are the numerous spoil heaps of waste from production. The Hyllestad Quernstone Quarries have been nominated for inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, together with the Vestfold Viking Ship Burials.

15THE MILL STONE PARK IN HYLLESTAD

MILLSTONE PARKis a delimited area of approximately one and a half hectares centrally located in Hyllestad. It has been adapted to present the quarries and the bedrock where extraction took place. An arena has been created adjacent to the protected quarry area to make room for activities related to the production. Here you will find buildings with public facilities, a smithy, an exhibition area for two shipwreck cargoes, and other information. Millstone Park is open to the public, and strategically­placed information boards relate the history of quernstones and millstones in Hyllestad.

During the period from 21th June to 17th August, guided tours of Millstone Park are offered. Historical trails, souvenir shop and snack foods. You can try your skills as a stone-carver and participate in other activities.

The popular poet Jakob Sande (1906–67) was born and bred at Klokkargarden in Dale. Klokkargarden comprises the house the poet was born in (Bestefarsstaua), the main farm-house and barn (and was the home and farm for the sexton/verger.) Jakob Sande-tunet (literally ‘farmyard’) is an open green area in Dale in the Fjaler Kommune Milleneum park.

A sculpture park has been created at Flolid in Gulen to commemorate the fact that the Gulatinget assembly met by the Gulafjord for five hundred years. Gulatinget was an annual parliamentary assembly that took place in Gulen from approx. 900–1300 AD. It was the oldest and largest regional assembly in medieval Norway, and Gulatinget Millennium Site is a symbol of the history of this Norwegian representative form of parliament, with traditions reaching over a thousand years back in time.

Gulatinget was the starting point for Norway becoming a democratic state governed by law with a system of government based on repre­sentative assemblies. Farmers from all along the coast gathered in Gulen to formulate laws and pass judgment on matters in direct nego­tiation with the king.

Initially farmers from Western Norway met at Gulen to discuss political matters, things like taxation, the building of roads and churches, military service and a number of other issues. They also used the assembly to pass judgments in civil disputes and criminal cases. Special legislation, Gulatingslova, was drafted to aid the discussions. The legislation exists today in a handwritten manuscript from around 1250 but the text represents all the laws adopted and amended by the farmers at Gulatinget over the course of a few centuries.

The assembly site was established early in the tenth century, and the original legislative area covered the regions of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane. Initially Gulatinget was an allting or common assembly, where all free farmers had the right to participate. Snorre’s Chronicle of the Kings of Norway tells that Håkon the Good (935–61) took an active part in the parliamentary assemblies at Gulen, and under his rule the regions of Rogaland, Agder and Sunnmøre were brought into the area covered by Gulatinget, with Setesdal, Hallingdal and Valdres later being incorporated too.

The legacy of Gulatinget is very much evident in our own Storting (the modernday Norwegian parliament in Oslo), where representatives from all parts of the country still sit according to the county they represent. As an institu­tion Gulatinget was both a legislative and judicial body. Nowadays, power is distributed between the Storting or parliament, the Government and the courts of justice, according to the principle of division of powers.

Pay a visit to the saga island of Kinn and immerse yourself in the history and delightful landscapes of this picturesque island with its medieval church.

Kinn is a fertile, verdant green island located off the coast of Florø. The seas surrounding Kinn provi­ded an important source of herring in fishing for most of the 19th century. During peak herring fish­ing season, Kinn and the surrounding islands had a total population of appro­ximately 15,000. The fabled Kinn church was built in the Romanesque style and has been in use since the 12th century. It has been rebuilt and restored and is now as close to its original style as possible. The church is the

oldest in the region of Sunnfjord. Its history is closely linked to the legend of St. Sunniva and her escorts, the men of Selju. However, it is now believed that the church was built by Celts, hiding from religious persecutors.

THE TRIP INCLUDES You sail out of the coastal town of Florø on a local boat, passing the islands and skerries on the sailing out to Kinn. You will be met by your guide on the quay and taken on a fascinating tour of the medieval church. Few Norwegian churches can boast such a breathtaking location as the stone church on Kinn island. The walk to the church takes about 30 minutes at a comfortable pace, following a gravel track of about 1 km length. During the walk, the guide explains some local history, including the heydays of herring fishing on Kinn. The atmosphere inside the church, which is one of the oldest in Norway, is quite unique. The guided tour is like a trip back in time where you can learn all about the history of this fascinating building, from the 12th century until modern day.

After the guided tour, you are free to explore the rest of the island on your own. We can highly recommend a walk up the characteristic hill, Kinnaklova, which is also a c landmark for sailors. You can spend the night on the island.

SVANØYhas a diverse history dating back centuries. In the 20th century, the island was the most important centre of this region with major exports and shipping. More than 100 men worked in the copper mines, there was extensive production of salt and shipbuilding and the island had several large farms. The island is also home to Svanøy Estate, once the seat of nobility and an Episcopal residence. Today, around 70 people live on the island and Svanøy is renowned for its production of high quality salmon and venison. DAGSTUR FRÅ FLORØPay a visit to the island of Svanøy on a wonderful daytrip from Florø. A cycling trip around the island is a great way to spend the day. With very little traffic and flat ground, this is perfect for adults and children. Visit the local shop when you arrive at the quay, where you can also hire cycles. VINGENOn the innermost banks of the narrow Vingenpollen fjord arm, surrounded by precipitous mountainsides, you will find Vingen, one of the largest and most unique rock carving sites in Northern Europe. More than 2,200 rock carvings have been discovered in this area and are thought to have been created by huntergatherers from the Neolithic age (ca. 6,000 years old).

The most common carving is of deer but you can also see human figures and abstract symbols. The rock carvings are a protected site and only organised visits are allowed. Join us on an exciting excursion to experience the rock carvings in Vingen!

24 HORNELEN – THE HIGHEST SEA CLIFF IN EUROPE

At 860 precipitous metres above sea level, Hornelen in Bremanger is the highest sea cliff in Europe. An excursion to its top is a memorable experience!

This is an excursion for those looking for spectacular adventure. The walk up Hornelen can be quite difficult and steep, but the views on the way up and from the top are definitely worth the effort. The top affords breathtaking panorama views of the coast to the south, of Sunnmøre to the north and of the entire region inland. From here, you can really see how varied the FjordKysten landscape is – from narrow valleys to high mountains and the tiny islands stretching out to the ocean. If you are feeling brave, you can lie on your stomach and peak over the edge of the cliff, which drops almost perpendicularly down 860 metres to the water below you. This is guaran­teed to be a memorable excursion!

Few peaks in Norway are so fabled and mystical as Hornelen – or Smalsarhorn to give the peak its Norse name. There is a crevice in the top of Hornelen. Legend has it that seamen were forbidden from sounding the ship’s horn as they passed under Hornelen. The fear was that vibrations from the horn could make the outermost section of rock come loose, fall down and create a flood wave. Hornelen is also the most famous “witch mountain” in the region of Sogn og Fjordane. Superstition had it that witches would gather here on both Christmas and Midsummer’s nights to dance and celebrate with the Devil.

THE EXCURSIONNorway Adventures provides transport to/from Hornelen, a map and written guide to the walk. You can also book an experienced local guide to accompany you up the peak. The best way to experience Hornelen is to start walking up from Hunskår then descend to Berleneset. The walk takes around 6–9 hours both ways.

You can spend the night at Knutholmen in Kalvåg. Kalvåg is one of the best preserved fishing villages in West Norway and is a charming location with its delightful boat houses nestled snugly around the bay.

STORE BATALDEN, FLORAStore Batalden (495 metres above sea level) is the highest hilltop on the islands surrounding Florø. From the top, you get wonderful views of the archipelago, islands and sea. The walk takes around 2.5 hours both ways. You can also spend the night on the island. Grade: Medium.

ALDEN, ASKVOLLAlden is often referred to as ”the Norwegian horse” due to its characteristic appearance. The hill rises 481 metres above sea level, straight up from the coast, providing great views of both sea and land. The walk takes around 2.5 hours both ways. The best way to reach Alden is from Værlandet. Grade: Medium.

BLEGJA, ASKVOLLAt 1,305 metres above sea level, Blegja is the highest top along the Fjord Coast. This is a difficult walk but you are amply rewarded by the views from the top, which encompass the Jostedal glacier in the far distance and the 7 hilltops surrounding Bergen, at a distance of 100 km! The walk takes around 8 hours both ways. Grade: Very difficult.

HEILEBERGET, FJALERHike to the top of Heileberget (761 metres above sea level) on the northern banks of the Dalsfjord, starting from Ottersteinen near the Dalsfjord bridge. The hike is difficult with steep sections but no climbing is required. Magnificent views of both the Dalsfjord and the archipelago in the west. 8 km both ways. The walk takes around 4–5 hours both ways. Grade: Difficult.

LIHESTEN, HYLLESTADLihesten in Hyllestad is a majestic and fabled hilltop. It rises to 777 metres above sea level and is one of the most characteristic hills along the coast. The walk takes around 7 hours both way and provides marvellous views! Grade: Difficult.

POLLATINDEN, SOLUNDAt 541 metres above sea level, Pollatinden is the second highest peak in Solund and a popular hike. From the top, you gain fantastic views of the ocean and Utvær lighthouse, the westernmost point of Norway, Gåsvær further north, Bulandet, Værlandet and Alden in the north­west. You can also see the Askvoll archipelago and north to Kinn. South of the Sognefjord, you can see the Gulen archipe­lago and let your eye follow the fjord inland to Lifjellet and Stølsheimen. The walk takes around 2 hours both ways. Grade: Medium difficulty.

VISITING THE CAIRNS OF GULENUndertun – Ormekletten – Svabergfjellet – Flolidfjellet – UndertunThis trip follows the cairns along the coast and tells the story of ”Leidangsvesenet”, the first organised form of naval defence in Norway. You gain wonderful views directly down to the Gulatinget millennium site from heights of 400 metres. The highest point of the trip is Svabergfjellet, 546 metres above sea level. The hike takes minimum 6 hours. Grade: Difficult.

NORDSJØLØYPERIf you would prefer walks of an easier nature, the North Sea Trails are perfect for you. These are waymarked trails over easy ground where you will discover fascinating history and beautiful coastal landscapes. The trails afford wonderful panorama views of the coast, islands and sea. The majority of trails are well­marked and you can find a folder of maps describing the trails and hillwalks at the Tourist Information Office and many hotels and guest­houses in the area.

28 EXPLORE THE BEAUTIFUL SOLUND ARCHIPELAGO BY KAYAK

The islands in the archipelago of Solund are absolutely perfect for kayaking. With more than 1,700 islands, islets and skerries, you will always find plenty of shelter from waves and winds – and can make it out quickly to the open sea when the waters are calm.

Solund is located at the outermost reaches of the Sognefjord, where the fjord meets the ocean. This area has a unique geology that has created a vast diversity of island landscapes. From the water’s edge, the rocky hillsides climb steeply upwards and are intersected by fertile valleys surrounded by fantastic

stone formations. The islands are divided by narrow fjords and sounds, creating the perfect destination for kayaking holidays. By kayak, you can also experience the wonderful flora and fauna up close. The islands are home to more than 1,000 wild sheep and you are almost guaranteed to see otter and sea eagles.

THE EXCURSIONThe excursion starts from Sandvik in the Austrefjord. Up to the 1960s, the area along the banks of this fjord had farms and its own school. Few inhabitants remain today but the small, idyllic farms can still be seen along the fjord banks as charming monuments. We keep close to land, kayaking along small fjord arms, through sounds and finding small, beautiful bays. The fjord opens up to the north­west, and Alden is an easily recognisable landmark in the north. This is the perfect excursion if you are new to kayaking and would like to try out a shorter trip to experience the Solund landscape from the water.

The farm in Sandvik is now open again after having been abandoned for 25 years. The grazing sheep have once again recrea­ted the cultural landscape in this area and the farm has just under 100 wild sheep. These are tame, pleasant animals and are not afraid of humans.

29HIKE & SAIL

A combination of sailing and hiking on the coast will provide lifelong memories!

The trip organiser, Butesail, is located in Askvoll and arranges RYA courses in sailing, sailing expeditions and guided hikes to peaks along the coast of Sogn og Fjordane. On their Hike & Sail excursion, you will experience some of the most beautiful coastal landscapes of Askvoll. During the trip, you will learn the basic techniques of sailing, navigation, crew tasks and safety onboard. This excursion is perfect for novices who are looking for an introduction to sailing. All participants will receive an RYA Start Yachting certificate at the end of the trip.

The excursion makes a stop on the island of Alden, also known as the ”Norwegian horse”. Alden is an easily recognisable sailing landmark along the coast, with its characteristic formation towering 481 metres above sea level. The views in every direction from the top are delightful.

The archipelago of Værlandet and Bulandet is close by Alden. These beautiful islands are like pearls scattered over the coastal waters and are beautifully interlinked by the Nordsjøporten road. They are a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts, cycling, kayaking and hiking. The excursion also includes a visit to the idyllic harbour on the island of Værøy with the Norwegian Sea Bird Centre, guest harbour, café and pub.

The whole experience starts on Friday evening in Askvoll when you will receive an introduction to sailing and navigation. We study the sea charts to plan our itinerary.

After breakfast on Saturday, we set sail and head for Alden. While sailing to Alden, the participants have plenty of time to practice sailing and navigation. We arrive in Alden at lunch time. After lunch onboard, we go ashore to hike up the ”Norwegian horse”. The walk takes around 3 hours both ways.

Back onboard, we set our course for Værlandet. Once ashore on the island, you can have a shower before dinner at Værlandet Kro and pay a visit to the Norwegian Sea Bird Centre. On Sunday, we set sail back to Askvoll and have time to practice more sailing and navigation. The excursion ends in Askvoll on Sunday afternoon.

The trip provides an introduction to sailing, navigation, how to handle a boat and safety onboard, and you have a qualified skipper with you onboard at all times.
