O Evidence-based …

Definition

O Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a problem

solving approach to clinical practice that

integrates the conscientious use of best

evidence in combination with a clinician’s

expertise as well as patient preferences and

values to make decisions about the type of

care that is provided. Resources must also

be considered in the decision making

process.

Melynk & Fineout-Overholt

Literature Search Strategy for Beginners

O Give students an article

O Use different search strategies

and databases to locate article

Are We Teaching Research the Traditional Way?

A) The study of how research findings are

translated into clinical practice to improve care

and outcomes

OR

B) The scientific investigation of how methods,

interventions and variables influence adoption

of EBPs by individuals and organizations

Match our Nursing Programs

A) Emphasis on research for practice

OR

B) Emphasis on practice of research

Reliability & Validity… the EBP Way

O Reliability

O Are the findings important

O Validity

O What is the impact of the intervention (effect

size)

O Are findings clinically relevant/applicable to

my patient?

Effect Size

O Calculated as the mean of the experimental

group minus the mean of the control group,

divided by the pooled or average standard

deviation

O Effect sizes for interventions

O .2 small effect

O .5 medium effect

O .8 large effect

Acting on the Evidence

Strength of the evidence + Quality of the

evidence = Confidence to Act
