HIGHLIGHTS
November 24 2019
In a culture where profit often gets the last word,
or popularity, or self-interest, what gets the last
word in your life.
As we come to the end of our “Ridiculous
Journey” series, we celebrate the way love
gets the last word.

Volunteers play such
an important role in
the life of Highlands.
Whether it is
helping out
occasionally,
or on a regular
basis, your
help is
invaluable.

The Seniors Lunch is an
example of a program
that could not survive
without teams of
volunteers. There are
those who set up, those
who cook, those who
serve and those who
clean up. When many
people pitch in, it makes
the job that much easier.
The connections
and relationships
built over time are
just one of the
rewards of this gift
of time.

Last Monday of the Month Highlands Book Circle:
HUC Book Circle is a drop-in, small group activity
that gives members of our congregation a
chance to get to know each other while sharing a
wide variety of literature. All are welcome.
We will meet in the HUC library at 7:15pm on Monday, November
25th. This month's book is:
The Vegetarian by Han Kang
Han Kang is a South Korean writer who won the Man Booker
International Prize for fiction in 2016 for "The Vegetarian".
This short, intense novel, set in modern Seoul, deals with the
consequences resulting from a woman’s decision to stop eating meat.
A Message from our Shelter to Home Team
The Shelter to Home team would appreciate your
help in spreading the word about our immediate
needs. After very few clients in October and a slow
start to November, there has been a sudden deluge
of people needing help. Our storage is quite full at the
moment, but still we are lacking the following items for
our clients, before the end of November:
3 queen beds and 2 twin beds
3 dining tables with 4 chairs
1 dining table with 2 chairs
3 small to medium-size coffee tables
6 end tables, 3 bookcases and 2 desks
5 flat screen TVs and 3 sets of pots
Thanks again for your support of our church's Outreach Program.
As we approach the end of the year, Finance Committee has
challenged us with a collective goal of $20,000 to fully fund 2019.
We need to raise $20,000 additional dollars. See previous
Highlights for charts and details.
Specifically, if each of our 200 giving households contributed a
“Top Up” of $100, we would be there.
“Top Up” contributions so far:
Total Contributors: 33
Total Contributions: $4,740.00
A huge thank you to these contributors. This is a great start
Please consider making a “Top Up” contribution today!
Please mark your envelope or cheque with “Top Up.”

COMMUNITY EVENTS
Concerts at Highlands United Church
Each year, the Family Services of the North Shore helps hundreds of
needy families with gift hampers coordinated by the North Shore
Christmas Bureau. Anyone may donate towards the Christmas
hampers by contacting their office at 604-984-9627 or you can visit
their website at:
https://www.familyservices.bc.ca/find-support/christmas-bureau/
This year, Highlands United Church was approached by the
coordinators of the Christmas Bureau to see if Highlands would be
able to host the event this year. After discussions with our renters,
our own program leaders and staff, we unanimously agreed to host
this vital community event. Highlands is delighted to welcome all
those who prepare hampers and all those who receive them. Our
Lower floor will be home to the Christmas Bureau from noon
Wednesday, December 11th to noon Saturday, December 14th.
If you are visiting the church during this time, please be mindful of any
areas that may be blocked off for the Christmas Bureau. The main
parking lot will be the main pick-up and drop off area for visitors
during these days so, please park in the other lots or use the 2 hour
free parking under Thrifty’s.
Highlands will definitely be a “hub” of activity this December and we
are so very grateful for the opportunity to serve our community.
Capilano University Music invites you to its festive performances
of Handel's Messiah. Lars Kaario leads the 110-voice choir, professional
orchestra led by Nancy DiNovo, and inspiring soloists Rachel Buttress
(soprano), Mark Donnelly (countertenor), Mark De Silva (tenor),
George Roberts (bass).
Sat Nov 30 at 8pm, and Sun Dec 1 at 3pm.
BlueShore Theatre at Capilano University, 2055 Purcell Way,
North Vancouver. Tickets: www.capilanou.ca/centre or 604-990-7810.
