Lee Bell officially opened the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists by welcoming attendees, and reading letters of welcome from the Governor of the State of Texas and the Mayor of the City of Houston. David Monk updated the audience on SEG activities and compared the growth in membership with the rise of new technology in the geophysical industry. Barry Smitherman delivered a talk on significant regulatory changes that are likely to be proposed for the future.

International Focus Region
Africa was the focus region for Houston. A special session in the technical program allowed attendees to learn about challenges and opportunities in the region. A reception was held to celebrate SEG relationships and activities in Africa.
Applied Science Education Program
“The Deepsea Challenge Expedition: Reaching for the Stars from the Bottom of the Ocean”, featuring Dr. Christina Massell Symons
Dr. Symons shared her experiences exploring the Pacific Ocean Basin and investigating the tectonic processes in the deepest ocean trenches.
High Performance Computing Focus Group and Theater
The HPC Theater was a dedicated area for exhibiting companies that are focused on the latest HPC technology available to the industry. By concentrating these companies in a centralized area, this assisted attendees in minimizing the time needed to find and evaluate HPC technology. The theater allowed attendees to attend presentations that provided a concise overview and unique contributions that HPC is making to the energy industry.
