THE IMPORTANCE OF COOPERATION I want to start out this month with one of my favorite jokes: A company has a job opening and has narrowed the potential candidates down to three. e first finalist, a mathe- matician, comes in for the final interview and the interviewer explains that there is only one question: what is two plus two. e mathematician, just a little stunned, pauses for a moment and responds, “Four.” e interviewer then calls in the second finalist, an engineer. Same routine, one question, “What’s two plus two?” The engineer replies, “at’s easy: four.” e interviewer then calls in the third finalist, an accountant. e interviewer again asks the one interview question, “What is two plus two?” e accountant sits thought- fully for just a moment, walks over to the window and pulls the shades, walks over and closes the door and returns to his seat. He then looks at the interviewer and asks, “What do you want it to be?” We’ve probably all heard the adage “We laugh because it’s funny, we laugh because it’s true.” I think this particular joke strikes a chord with me because it resonates on a couple of levels. e first of those is how we view the world. I think we all have a tendency to see most of the problems that are in front of us in black and white, and somehow ignore the endless shades of gray that are in between. THE IMPORTANCEOF COOPERATION

I want to start out this month with one of my favorite jokes:

A company has a job opening and has narrowed the potential candidates down to three. The first finalist, a mathe-matician, comes in for the final interview and the interviewer explains that there is only one question: what is two plus two. The mathematician, just a little stunned, pauses for a moment and responds, “Four.” The interviewer then calls in the second finalist, an engineer. Same routine, one question, “What’s two plus two?” The engineer replies, “That’s easy: four.” The interviewer then calls in the third finalist, an accountant. The interviewer again asks the one interview question, “What is two plus two?” The accountant sits thought-fully for just a moment, walks over to the window and pulls the shades, walks over and closes the door and returns to his seat. He then looks at the interviewer and asks, “What do you want it to be?”

We’ve probably all heard the adage “We laugh because it’s funny, we laugh because it’s true.” I think this particular joke strikes a chord with me because it resonates on a couple of levels. The first of those is how we view the world. I think we all have a tendency to see most of the problems that are in front of us in black and white, and somehow ignore the endless shades of gray that are in between. We live in a time of absolutes.

While we don’t know who ultimately got the job in the joke, we can guess that it may have been the accountant. That’s because the accountant appeals to our desire to be correct, to get external confirmation of what we believe, to have someone tell us what we want to hear. To me this is evident every

time there’s a hot button issue in the national press. It doesn’t matter if it’s impeachment or COVID-19, I can flip between the major national cable news channels and I will hear diametrically opposed analysis of the same issue. I can literally choose to hear what I want to hear. This phenomenon is amplified in the world of social media. Social media presents an outlet where we can present a position — which may or may not have a factual basis — to the entire world.

In my opinion, the combination of these phenomenons — our desire to see things in black and white, right and wrong, good and evil; and our ability to find sources that reinforce our beliefs, regardless of what they are — have stifled civil discourse. I would argue that some of the greatest accomplishments in the history of our nation, and humanity for that matter, have come when we can sit down with those who have different perspectives and beliefs than we do and work together to arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. We cooperate, we are a cooperative.

Camp and Tour Update

W e’re sad to announce that this year’s Washington D.C. Youth Tour was canceled.  Cole

Sigmon and Nathan Brekel will be attending the 2021 Youth Tour instead.

The Youth Leadership Camp scheduled in July was also canceled. We extended the offer to attend camp next summer to our two attendees; one is able to attend next year and the other is not, so we will be accepting one more application for the 2021 year.

For the 2021 Tour and Camp trips, we will be accepting applications this fall for two additional students to attend the Washington D.C. Youth Tour and one addi-tional student to attend Youth Leadership Camp near Steamboat Springs.

AnniversariesCongratulations to the following HEA employees who observe an employment anniversary in August:

Jerry Banaka .................... 37 yearsJim Jackson ............................1 year

Pesticide SafetyPlease protect our employeesOur employees face serious health risks when they unknowingly enter a field that was sprayed or chemigated with any chemical. Just as you would not subject your family or employees to risk, we do not want to subject our employees to risk. Please consider the following:• If you used any chemicals on a field, please notify Highline.

You may call the office or you can place a flag at the entrance to the field. Please note the day when it is safe to enter the field and what chemical was used.

• Notification signs or flags are available free of charge at any Highline office.• If calling in during an outage, please notify Highline if the field was sprayed.• The initial and long-term effects of absorbing chemicals in the body are extremely

hazardous to one’s health. Please don’t subject our employees to these dangers.
