On Jan. 7, Yacolt Town Council members appointed Patrick Knowles, an area resi- dent and three-time-award- winning poet, as their Poet Laureate. The new Poet Laure- ate plans to promote the appre- ciation and creation of new po- etry by holding monthly poetry readings and conducting work- shops in the Town of Yacolt. Christopher Luna, Vancou- ver poet, editor, publisher and teacher and founder of the pop- ular Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic, has agreed to be Yacolt’s liaison and adviser in matters relating to questions about promoting the art of poetry. In 2011, Luna and his partner Toni Partington founded Printed Matter Vancouver, a small press and editing service that has published two books – Ghost Town Poetry, an anthology of poems from the Vancouver open mic reading he founded in 2004, and Serenity in the Brutal Garden, the debut volume from Vancouver poet Jenney Pauer. Knowles will begin hold- ing poetry readings and events soon. Lois Christensen was born in Chehalis Feb. 14, 1913, where she lived until 1920. This Feb. 14, Lois will celebrate her 100th birthday. Lois and her mother moved around a lot and settled in Vancouver when she was 14. After her marriage to Clyde Christensen, they purchased a dairy farm in the Battle Ground Cherry Grove district and sold milk to the Battle Ground Co- op. Later, they bottled and sold milk at Christensen’s Cherry Grove Dairy in retail stores. Lois also worked at Tiger Bowl- ing Alley in Battle Ground for a few years and then at Padden’s Men Store in downtown Van- couver before retiring. After retiring, Lois has trav- eled and enjoyed family, grange activities, her bunco and ladies clubs. She says she may have white hair and some wrinkles, but she is still here and can’t believe she is 100. Lois’ family and friends wish her a happy 100th birth- day.
