All district and school policies apply to my classroom.

What are those even?

Page 7: Hillcrest high school policies

“A student is responsible to contribute positively to the learning in the classroom.” – Hillcrest High School Planner p. 11

If you do anything to stop learning, I will do something.

Page 8: Hillcrest high school policies

Responsibilities, p. 17

Students Show respect for teachers and

classmates by attending class regularly and on time.

Monitor attendance and grades regularly using Skyward.

Page 9: Hillcrest high school policies

Cont. Responsibilities, p. 17

Parents Monitor student attendance and grades

regularly using Skyward. Plan medical appointments and

vacations at times which do not interfere with the academic year when possible.

Page 10: Hillcrest high school policies

Hall passes

“Hall passes are for emergency use only. Students are encouraged to take care of personal issues before or after school, during class breaks or during lunch.” Hillcrest High School Planner p. 22

Don’t go to the bathroom in my class. What is something that cannot wait? Come prepared with materials, water, and

needed snacks.

Page 11: Hillcrest high school policies

Phone usage

“Students should not be making or accepting calls or text messages during class time. Student cell phone usage should not interfere with the educational process in any way. If a phone or other electronic device should disrupt a class (ringing, beeping, etc.), the device will be confiscated by the teacher and given to an assistant principle. After the first offense a parent will have to come to the office to meet with the student’s assistant principal to pick up a student’s cell phone.”—Hillcrest High School Planner p. 24-25

Phone usage

No warning (just this PowerPoint)

I see it, I take it.1. I will walk over to your desk and hold

my hand out (even if it’s away by then).

2. If student refuses, class will continue and referral will be submitted to the administrator after class.

Headphones

No warning (just this PowerPoint)

I see them, I take them.

1. I will walk over to your desk and hold my hand out (even if they’re away by then).

2. If student refuses, class will continue and referral will be submitted to the administrator after class.

Be safe, don’t leave them hanging visible.

Dress Code

“Hats of any kind are not allowed within the building except as part of an approved activity, or for religious or medical purposes.” –Hillcrest High School Planner p. 15

HOODS INCLUDED! I will say your name and gesture for you to

remove the hat/hood. If student refuses, class will continue and

referral will be submitted to the administrator after class.

Page 15: Hillcrest high school policies

Why all the referrals?

I’m not going to power struggle with students if they refuse to follow rules/instructions. It wastes class time and stops learning.

If it’s happening in my class, it’s happening in other classes. It helps other teachers and students out.

I’d rather spend prep time planning fun lessons than calling parents and meeting with students after school.

Page 16: Hillcrest high school policies

What is a referral?

When you choose NOT to follow rules and instructions, a referral may be filed without me telling you.

Usually I’ll say your name and ask you to stop, and if you don’t I’ll just shrug, go on with class, and file the referral after.

When I fill out a referral for you, an administrator calls you into their office during that day or the next.

I might be present for that meeting and your parent might also be called.

Page 17: Hillcrest high school policies

Bottom line?

“Follow instructions without argument” –Hillcrest High School Standards and Expectations>Classroom>Respectful

Participation

I don’t give you participation points like Mrs. Freeman because the Attendance policy should motivate you enough to get to class. We also do a lot of classwork that counts towards your grade so that’s the real reason you don’t want to miss.

Let’s take a look!

Page 23: Hillcrest high school policies

1st missing assignment

I call home on the first missing assignment.

I do this not to punish you, but because I care about you and want you to do well in my class.

I call your parents up front and you don’t fall behind.

Procedures Continued

Pay attention from today’s lesson and avoid failure trying to figure things out.

Getting help from me

Emails from parents

Page 30: Hillcrest high school policies

Going to the lab, cont.

AGREE TO USE LAB TIME WISELY We will not do lab projects if you are

not working. For example, the “Latino World Trip Project.” Students were given 3.5 hours in the lab and some had “nothing” to present.

If you’re not working on the project, we won’t ever work in the lab and those projects will be 100% homework.

Page 31: Hillcrest high school policies

Making comments

Raise your hand and patiently wait until you are called on to speak.

Page 32: Hillcrest high school policies

Checking homework

Get out a pen (just something different than what you wrote in which was hopefully pencil)

Correct your own Write in the right answers Ask questions on the problems you

didn’t understand why

Page 33: Hillcrest high school policies

Working with peers

Once you and a peer from your foursome completes a block of problems independently you may compare answers.

1. Raise your hand2. Ask for permission, “¿Podemos

colaborar?”3. Compare and discuss different answers4. Go back to working on next section

independently (alone)

Page 34: Hillcrest high school policies

Using your resources

If you need help outside of class here are some suggestions.

1. Call a classmate2. Use the internet (search youtube or

studyspanish.com by topic)3. spanishdict.com / wordreference.com4. Email me with homework questions5. Go to NHS tutoring (Tues. and Thurs.)6. Visit me after school (M-F) or before

during “late-start” (MWF)

Page 35: Hillcrest high school policies

Classroom Roles1. Birthday person – get the list, tell me during

diario if somebody has (or had) a birthday.2. Break person – if an hour has passed and we

haven’t taken a brain/body break, tell me.3. Fall guy – you’re the person we blame for

everything. (Stretcher?)4. Mensajero – you go to the office, lab, library,

or ask other teachers things when I need you5. Timer – If I tell you an activity is only going to

be so long, you time me and let me know when time’s up.

6. Entregador (3) – you turn in papers for your section and return extras from your section.

Page 36: Hillcrest high school policies

Policies you signed and agreed to when you registered at the beginning of the year—found in your planner

Page 37: Hillcrest high school policies

“A student is responsible to contribute positively to the learning in the classroom.” – Hillcrest High School Planner p. 11

If you do anything to stop learning, I will do something.

Page 38: Hillcrest high school policies

Classroom Behavior

“If a student’s behavior becomes disruptive to the class…the teacher will try to resolve any concerns with individual students using any or all of the following [consequences].” – p. 11

Define disruptive actions Out of seat, excessive talking, off-task

behavior

Page 39: Hillcrest high school policies

Getting out of seat

Los entregadores should be the only ones leaving their seats.

When done with seatwork you may leave to grab extra credit work, but you may not visit with classmates.

If you have trash at your desk, hold on to it and throw it away on your way out of class.

I’ll try to have interactive activities everyday, when I don’t, that’s why we have our “brain/body break” to stretch.

(descanso)

Page 40: Hillcrest high school policies

Define disrespectful actions

Arguing with instructions Not following instructions

› Including individual, e.g. “John, siéntate.”› Refusing to follow instructions just because

they’re in Spanish (despite obvious gestures)

Disrespectful tone language› Sassing me to speak English› Whining

Page 41: Hillcrest high school policies

Consequences Recap

1. I will say your name, and you can correct the problem yourself.

2. I will tell you to correct the problem specifically.

3. Referral – PTSA conference
