Build a home that’s wired for technology

Anyone considering building a new house will have heard someone mention

structured cabling or smart wiring, and how important it is to be able to use

the technologies available to us, and be prepared for those that are just around

the corner.

So what are they actually talking about?

The Hills Home Hub delivers and distributes data, phone, video, audio and TV

signals using the latest in data and TV cables from a centrally located enclosure

to specially configured wall outlets in any room of your choice. Structured

cabling using the Hills Home Hub is preferably planned at the same time as

your electrical wiring. The central enclosure is home to the devices that enable

the delivery and distribution of these signals. It also houses

the security system central controller.** An ideal location for the central enclosure

is a garage or utility room.

It is important to plan in which rooms you would like to access data, phone,

video, audio and TV. This planning is important to you now and to future

owners of your home because it adds flexibility and value. The use of a room

could change over time. A nursery now will become a teenager's bedroom,

and possibly a study or home office in the future. In order to access or share

these signals, cables along with wall outlets, containing standard data and TV

entertainment points need to be installed.

Supervise your children as they play in the back yard while you're

preparing lunch. The video picture is sent from the outdoor security

camera via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central enclosure

to a selected television in any room of your home, so your children

can continue playing safely, even when you are not physically there

to watch them.

Video Distribution

With the Hills Home Hub, you don't have to leave what you're doing

to answer the security gate or front door when the buzzer is pressed.

Simply pick up the remote to select the television channel

programmed for the front gate camera and see who's there. A phone

system with intercom and gate release features can then be used

to send a signal via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central

enclosure, to release the electric latch on the gate and invite your

guests in. Using the phone system as an intercom, speak to a family

member in another room to tell them their friends have arrived.

Anyone can access the internet via a centralised server modem to

surf the net from any computer in the home. A web page like

www.hillshomehub.com.au can be selected to print. The signal

travels via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central enclosure,

and the page you have selected will be waiting for you at the

printer in your home office.

Keep all your video equipment in the one location with the Hills smart

entertainment system and enjoy multi-room viewing and

controlling of your DVD, pay TV and VCR on any television in your

home. Once you have selected the pre-programmed channel for your

DVD player, use your remote control to activate the PLAY function.

The infrared signal travels via the Hills Home Hub cables, through

the central enclosure, through the Hills modulator, to the DVD player

in your entertainment area. The DVD will then send the movie back

to the TV that you're watching. The Hills smart entertainment system

allows you to control the functions of your VCR, DVD, or pay TV

remotely, in any room where there's a TV.

Enjoy superior stereo sound in any room of your home with the Hills

Home Music wall or ceiling mounted speakers. A CD player in your

home entertainment area sends music signals via the Hills Home

Hub cables, through the central enclosure to the rooms in which the

speakers are located. Set the volume level independently in each

room using the volume control.

Techical Information

Technical Information 13

Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) is transmitted using digital modulation in the channels available in Bands III, IV and V, sharing the spectrum with the current analogue transmissions. Unlike analogue transmissions there will be no Band I or II transmissions for DTTB.

The existing transmitter sites are used for DTTB transmissions. The fi ve major capitals cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth broadcast the commercial stations and the ABC service on Band III VHF while the SBS DTTB service use Band IV. Whereas other regional areas of Australia will mainly use UHF Bands IV and V. Analogue TV service is scheduled to commence turning off from 2010.

Although successful reception via current antennas will normally be experienced, optimum and robust reception of DTTB may require some modifi cations. The use of the guidelines contained herein and other like documents will help to ensure the domestic antenna installations provide reliable reception supporting the success of DTTB.

Digital vs. AnalogueDTTB can:

• Offer better reception of TV services than the analogue system;

• Deliver higher quality picture and sound than analogue, it has no effects of ghosting or distorted pictures;

• Offer enhanced features such as closed captions, electronic program guides, and data services and even selected radio services.

Benefi ts of DTTBWidescreen Television PictureWidescreen is a television picture format that allows television networks to broadcast television programs that offer a more natural, panorama view compared to the earlier formats. Widescreen sometimes known as “16:9”, this refers to the aspect ratio (the ratio of width to height) of a widescreen picture. Most new Australian program, especially sport events and overseas sourced programs are now produced for widescreen formats.

SDTVStandard defi nition is the current television display resolution as analogue television and DVDs; it supports both 4:3 and 16:9 widescreen. To receive digital signals, most TVs require installing a separate digital Set-top-box. However, some TV with build-in digital tuners, so do not require an external Set-top-box.

HDTVHigh defi nition is the enhanced of SDTV; at the moment each broadcaster is broadcasting 20 hours of HDTV per week. All HD programs are produced and shown in widescreen formats.

It has the highest TV picture quality available; the resolution can be up to 3 times of SDTV. It is particularly suited to large screen TV displays. It can offer a 5.1 surround sound where this sound track is available.

Display Resolutions

Type Resolution Total Pixels

High Defi nition 1080i: 1920 x 1080 x 3 = 6,220,800

High Defi nition 720p: 1280 x 720 x 3 = 2,764,800

High Defi nition 576p: 720 x 576 x 3 = 1,244,160

Standard Defi nition 576i: 720 x 576 x 3 = 1,244,160

The resolution type SD 576i is the almost the same as traditional CRT TV. (575i) while it is the same as DVD resolution. There are three different HDTV standards in Australia. The lowest is 576p; the next is 720p Quasi. The highest resolution standard is 1080i, which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and is in ‘interlaced’ mode.To watch HD pictures, not only HD Set-top-box is needed, but also a HD resolution display is also required.

The Digital SignalThe ‘digital’ signal used for DTTB is very different to the familiar PAL analogue signal, hence some understanding of the differences by the installer and technician will aid in a quality installation and the explanation to others, including the consumer.

DTTB utilises a form of modulation called COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) and is defi ned by DVB – T standards. The purpose of COFDM is to provide a vehicle for the carriage of the digital signal that is highly robust to the effects of echoes or ghosts that are created from multiple paths from the transmitter to the receive antenna.

The ‘magic’ of the COFDM has its origin from spreading the data between many carriers. Either of two modes of COFDM maybe employed, with the ‘2K mode’ having 1705 carriers and the ‘8K mode’ having 6817 carriers. Australia uses the 8K mode, hence the power is spread evenly over the 6.7MHz portion of the 7MHz channel, in contrast to an analogue service with its concentration of power in the vision carrier at the lower end of the spectrum.

The difference in power distribution has important consequences of the measurement of signal level, as covered later in measurements.

Fig. 1: Analogue and Digital Signal Spectrum

Product Catalogue 2007 Page 121

Technical Information 13

The Digital Cliff EdgeUnlike analogue TV signals, which can be viewed down to weak signal strengths or in corrupted conditions, DTTB TV signal’s pictures and sound will either be perfect, or in the process of breaking up or non-existent. The penalty for the potential of obtaining perfect pictures and sound all the time is that DTTB reception exhibits a very rapid change from being excellent to disappearing. This phenomenon in general is referred to as digital cliff edge or threshold.

Fig. 2: Picture and Sound Quality Versus Signal Strength

The recommended minimum level margin is 9dB (typically ≥ 15dB with preferred >20dB) for the fi rst level of caution to cater for short and long-term variations.

The cliff edge characteristic of digital reception invites the defi nition of a margin the signal has to achieve before this failure level or cliff edge is reached. By the insertion of an attenuator in the input of the receiver or the system’s amplifi er, the level margin may be found.

Importantly all the channels expected to be received must be received reliably. Hence the level margin must be checked on all channels. Further quality checking must be assessed also on all channels.

Page 122: Hills 2007 Antenna Catalogue

Page 122 Product Catalogue 2007

Technical Information 13

Signal Measurements for DTTB

Signal LevelThe measurement of the signal level sometimes referred to as channel power, delivered to the input of the receiver will be the initial easy check on the suitability of the installation. The levels recommended below have allowances to cater for the requirements of reception in Band III, IV and V in most environments experienced in city and rural locations.

With the experience in analogue reception of 66dBµV and C/N >45dB as an aim for a successful analogue installation the equivalent for digital TV reception is 66dBµV and SNR >32dB as a rule of thumb for a successful digital installation. For satellite installation the parameters are 63dBµV and MER>12B.

The signal level required at the input of any active headend equipment or amplifi er shall be no less than 75dBµV and the recommended output level or launch level should be no higher then 105dBµV.

DTTB is not a solution to very low-level poor analogue reception. Since the Digital service is transmitted 6dB below the analogue, low analogue levels would result in lower digital level and unacceptable levels for amplifi cation. Digital reception is ideal for improving poor analogue reception such as ghosting and general interferences. To achieve this however, the Digital signal level needs to be maintaining at a reasonable level at all times.

Modulation Error Ratio (MER)MER is a parameter that measures the phase shift error of the RF signal in the modulation and demodulation of the digital content.

Fig. 3 Basic MER Vector Diagram

It is the sum of the squares of the magnitudes of the ideal symbols vectors and divided by the sum of the squares of the symbol error vectors. The result is expressed as a power ratio in dB.

( )dBe

AMER

i

i2

2

log10∑∑=

When measuring digital signals the MER should be one of the main parameters to be measured. Terrestrial MER >32dB

The reason for this measurement rather than measuring BER, is that BER can be infl uenced by the forward error correction method incorporated in the digital demodulator. While MER has the advantage that this measurement is before forward error correction, so it gives us a better idea of how the signal and hence how the installation is performing.

Poor MER affects the picture quality right from the beginning to complete failure.

MER = 10 log (dB)

Page 123: Hills 2007 Antenna Catalogue

Product Catalogue 2007 Page 123

Technical Information 13

Bit Error Ratio (BER)BER is a measurement of signal quality after conversion of the ‘RF’ to data. This data determines whether converted pictures and sound can be received uncorrupted. Errors in the data, or bit errors, can be tolerated up to a particular level without an effect on pictures or sound due to the techniques employed which are simply called error correction.

The DTTB transmission and reception path employs built-in error correction techniques collectively called forward error correction (FEC). In the receiver, error correction takes place in two distinct stages called inner (or Viterbi) and outer (or Reed – Solomon) decoding. There maybe a choice in the measuring instrument at what position to measure the BER. The measurement of BER before Viterbi or ‘Pre – Viterbi’ error correction is used on high quality signals, for example, on Cable and Satellite TV reception. For the more complex and corrupted Terrestrial reception, BER measurement after Viterbi or ‘Post – Viterbi’ should be monitored.

A Post – Viterbi BER of worse than ‘2E-4’ will exceed the ability of the Reed – Solomon error correction and may result in picture and sound corruption. To provide for a suffi ciently robust reception, a Post – Viterbi BER of better than ‘2E-6’ is required at the input and output of the amplifi ers.

Operating MarginsAlong with the level margins a further equally important quality margin is required to provided a reliable digital services. By the measurement of Post – Viterbi BER, the quality margin can be judged. To provide the level of this margin in relation with BER, knowledge of a parameter called MER is helpful. MER or Modulation Error Ratio is a single fi gure of merit for the in band quality that includes the noise, inter-modulation and other corruptions of the signal. MER is a very near equivalent of in band S/N. At the cliff edge or at the threshold C/N point, the MER equals this threshold value, being approximately 20dB for modulation of 64QAM with a FEC of 2/3 or 3/4. The Post – Viterbi BER at this level will be approximately 2E-4, with a consequential margin at the threshold of 0dB. With, for example, a BER of 2E-6, the MER maybe around 22dB, results in a 2dB quality margin. The relationship between BER and MER changes with the complexity of the signal, hence Fig. 3 can only be taken as a guide.

Fig. 4: signal Quality

Carrier to Noise Ratio (C/N)The C/N ratio is defi ned as the ratio between the vision carrier signal level and the RMS noise level.

The carrier to noise ratio for any analogue channel shall not be less than 45dB at any point in the system.

The carrier to noise ratio or SNR (signal to noise) for any digital channel shall not be less than 32dB at any point in the system.

Amplifi ersMasthead Amplifi erThe best possible signal quality is straight off the antenna, once the signal leaves this point the signal gets degraded by system losses. Hence, after obtaining the best possible signal from the best possible antenna we need to work out the system loss and determine if an amplifi er is required to overcome this system loss. The maximum gain of an amplifi er should not be more than 10dB greater than the system loss.

If the signal level measured from the antenna is less than 60dBµV, a masthead amplifi er such as the Hills LNDA or Q – Amp is recommended. Masthead amplifi ers usually have a gain of 20 - 34dB, have a low noise fi gure and are capable of accepting a minimum level of not be less than 45dBµV.

Distribution Amplifi erDistribution amplifi ers are used to increase the signal level from an antenna and extend it to a multiple outlet network. Hence the main difference between a masthead and a distribution amplifi er is the location of the amplifi er in the system, the input working levels, noise fi gures and output launch levels.

If signal level is above 70dBµV before requiring splitting the signal then a distribution amplifi er is recommended. However, if the signal level drops below 70dBµV before the splitter it would be advisable to use a masthead amplifi er. The gain of the distribution amplifi er is chosen depending upon the system loss of the network from amplifi er to outlet plate.

Reduction of maximum output level of amplifi ers (derating)All amplifi ers are rated with a maximum output level in relation to the number of allowable channels the amplifi er was tested with. This is referred to as the amplifi ers’ channel loading ability. An earlier specifi cation for amplifi ers was known as DIN45004B.

This specifi cation will show the maximum output level with a loading of two channels only. However, many commercial grade amplifi ers will show the output level specifi cation using the Cenelec 50083 standard with a 42 channel loading capacity in line with European and new Australian standards. If an amplifi er specifi cation only shows a 2-channel loading in its load chart then we can use a de-rating graph to work out the calculation for derating an amplifi er for 42 channels.

This fi gure will allow you to determine out the maximum output level the amplifi er can be set to. Most well designed systems can have more channels added without any adjustments to the amplifi ers. This is because the system was designed with amplifi ers already de-rated to more than the current number of channels been distributed in the network. Most amplifi er output levels are now rated at “42 Channel” operation. As we increase the number of distributed channels we must decrease the output in dB according to the fi gure below to maintain distortion products at minus 60dB.

Fig. 5 Derating of amplifi ers

Example:The Polytron amplifi er HA40125N has a rated output of 125dBµV @ 2 channels.

Therefore the new output level when loaded with 32 channels will be 113dBµV. De-rating factor is 12dB.
